With its appealing blend of style, space and available V6 power, the 2016 Chevrolet Impala is a smart choice for a large sedan.

Why are we fans of the 2016 Chevrolet Impala, a large sedan in its third year of production? Well, it certainly has the big-car basics down, what with its roomy interior, smooth ride and trunk large enough to relocate a small village. But we also appreciate the Impala's technology, particularly relative to what the previous, rental-grade Impala provided. Standard on all but the base LS trim is the 8-inch MyLink touchscreen infotainment system, which has crisp graphics and an intuitive interface, albeit one that can occasionally be slow to respond.

Clean, dignified styling gives the 2016 Chevrolet Impala a refined presence that plays well in this near-luxury segment.

The Impala is up to date on electronic driver aids, too, with lane-departure warning, forward collision alert and blind-spot monitoring all present and accounted for on the options list. The top-of-the-line LTZ further offers adaptive cruise control with automatic emergency braking. Other highlights include confident V6 power (in the 2LT and LTZ trims) and outstanding crash-test scores. Of course, big cars are meant to be mile-eaters on the highway, and the Impala delivers here as well, making for a restful, serene road tripper on long hauls.

There are a few other sedans you might want to check out before settling on the Impala. The perennial leader of this pack is the roomy Toyota Avalon, which offers a hybrid model in addition to its smooth V6. There are also the well-equipped Hyundai Azera and Kia Cadenza (which share many mechanical bits), as well as the stylish and powerful Chrysler 300. And don't forget to check out the Hyundai Genesis -- it's a class-up car, but with Hyundai's aggressive pricing, it may well fall into an Impala shopper's budget. Still, the 2016 Chevrolet Impala is right in the mix and should definitely be on your test-drive list.

The 2016 Chevrolet Impala is offered in LS, 1LT, 2LT and 2LTZ trim levels. The LS is four-cylinder-only, while the LT comes with either the four (1LT) or the V6 (2LT). The 2LTZ is V6-only.

Standard features on the entry-level LS include 18-inch steel wheels, automatic headlights, remote keyless entry, cruise control, air-conditioning, an eight-way power-adjustable driver seat (with power lumbar), a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a trip computer, OnStar (with a 4G connection and WiFi hotspot), Bluetooth phone connectivity and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player, satellite radio, a USB port, an auxiliary audio jack and a 4.2-inch color display. An optional Protection package adds rear parking sensors, foldable rear headrests and a cargo net. Stand-alone options include larger wheels, an engine block heater and all-weather floor mats.

The 1LT adds 18-inch alloy wheels, heated side mirrors, cloth-and-leatherette upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, power lumbar adjustment for the front passenger seat, folding rear head restraints and the MyLink infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen, voice controls, Bluetooth audio connectivity, two additional USB ports (for a total of three), an SD card slot, HD radio, Apple CarPlay, Internet radio smartphone-app compatibility and voice-to-text messaging capability for certain smartphones.

A number of options on the 1LT are grouped into packages. The Convenience package includes rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, remote ignition and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. There are also two Appearance packages, one adding a trunk-lid spoiler, a body-color grille surround and chrome mirror caps, and another (the "Midnight Edition") adding the spoiler, 19-inch black-and-silver wheels and blacked-out exterior trim.

The 2016 Chevrolet Impala's optional Midnight Appearance package gives it a menacing yet refined look on the street.

The 2LT is similarly equipped to the 1LT, but substitutes the V6 engine for the 1LT's four-cylinder. In addition to the 1LT's options packages, the 2LT offers a Driver Confidence package (forward collision warning, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert), a Leather package (leather upholstery, heated front seats, eight-way power passenger seat), a Technology package (19-inch wheels, rear spoiler, 120-volt power outlet, 11-speaker Bose audio system, wireless phone charger, ambient lighting) and a Navigation package (keyless entry and ignition plus integrated MyLink navigation).

The 2LTZ model (the number denotes its V6 engine; last year's four-cylinder version, the 1LTZ, has been dropped) includes the 2LT's Driver Confidence package and Leather package as standard, as well as the Convenience package (except the auto-dimming rearview mirror), and it adds 19-inch wheels, xenon headlights, dual exhaust outlets, chrome door handles and ambient interior lighting.

The 2LTZ's options list includes an Enhanced Convenience package (auto-dimming driver-side mirror and rearview mirror, ventilated front seats, heated power-adjustable steering wheel, driver memory settings) and an Advanced Technology package (wireless cell phone charging, 11-speaker Bose stereo, 120-volt power outlet). There's also a Midnight Appearance package like the one offered on the LT models. Adaptive cruise control with automatic emergency braking is exclusively available on the 2LTZ, as are 20-inch wheels.

Stand-alone options, depending on trim, include some of the above items within packages, plus a sunroof.

Note that a bi-fuel (gasoline or CNG) Impala is also slated for production in familiar LS and LT (technically "3LT") trims, though it has slightly different equipment, including standard single-zone automatic climate control for the LS and a mildly modified options structure.

All 2016 Impalas are equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The LS and 1LT employ a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 196 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy is EPA-rated at 25 mpg combined (22 city/31 highway). Included with the four-cylinder is an automatic stop-start system that automatically shuts off the engine when you come to a halt to save fuel.

The 2LT and 2LTZ step up to a 3.6-liter V6 rated at 305 hp and 264 lb-ft of torque. The EPA rates this engine at 22 mpg combined (18 city/28 highway). In performance testing, a 2015 Impala 2LT accelerated from zero to 60 mph in a quicker-than-average 6.4 seconds, putting it in a dead heat with the last Avalon we tested and comfortably ahead of the Azera and Cadenza.

Chevrolet also plans to offer a dual-fuel Impala V6 that can run on either compressed natural gas (CNG) or gasoline. The trunk-mounted CNG tank holds 7.8 GGE (gasoline gallon equivalent), enough to power the Impala for 150 miles. The bi-fuel Impala runs on CNG by default, switching over to gasoline when the CNG tank is depleted, but a dash-mounted switch allows you to change fuel sources on the fly. The engine produces 260 hp and 247 lb-ft on gasoline, dropping to 230 hp and 218 lb-ft on CNG. According to the EPA, fuel economy suffers somewhat -- the bi-fuel Impala is EPA-rated at 20 mpg combined (17 city/25 highway) on gasoline and 19 mpg combined (16/24) on CNG.

The 2016 Chevrolet Impala comes standard with antilock brakes, traction and stability control, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and front knee airbags. Also standard is GM's subscription-based OnStar service, which includes automatic crash notification, an emergency assistance button, remote door unlock and stolen vehicle assistance. The 1LT's Convenience package includes rear parking sensors and a rearview camera, while the 2LT's Driver Confidence package (standard on 2LTZ) adds forward collision warning, lane-departure warning and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The 2LTZ gets an exclusive forward collision mitigation system with automatic braking when adaptive cruise control is specified.

In brake testing, a 2015 Impala 2LT with 19-inch wheels came to a stop from 60 mph in 114 feet, an excellent result for the segment.

In government crash testing, the Impala received a perfect five stars for overall crash protection, including five stars for total frontal-impact and five stars for total side-impact collisions. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Impala its best rating of "Good" in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset and side-impact crash tests. Also in IIHS testing, the LTZ's optional frontal collision warning and automatic braking systems earned the top rating of "Superior."

Impala buyers might be tempted to stick with the four-cylinder engine on account of its lower price and higher fuel economy, but if you shell out for the V6, you won't regret it. The V6's relatively swift sprint to 60 mph only tells part of the story -- when you punch it at cruising speed, the engine responds with real authority. As for the base four, it's reasonably smooth and willing, but its 110-hp deficit is readily apparent from the driver seat.

As expected, the Impala takes road impacts in stride, soaking up the bumps and ruts like a big car should. The interior is also pleasingly quiet, with minimal amounts of wind and road noise at freeway speeds. For maximum ride comfort, however, we advise skipping the 2LTZ's optional 20-inch wheels, as they ride a little too harshly over sharp bumps. Taken around turns, the Impala demonstrates modest handling limits that don't quite jibe with the car's sleek styling. In the absence of sporting performance, though, the Impala still provides a secure feel on winding roads.

The Impala's dynamic, modern exterior writes checks that its interior is pleased to cash. The graceful dual-cowl dashboard flows organically into the door panels, creating a wraparound effect that has become a GM trademark as of late. The 8-inch MyLink touchscreen for audio, navigation and phone functions really ties the room together, providing crisp, high-resolution graphics (except for the oddly grainy rearview) and an intuitive interface that works much like a smartphone. We would ask only for quicker and more predictable responses to touch inputs, as well as upgraded materials to replace a few flimsy plastic elements in the center console.

The 2016 Chevrolet Impala's interior offers plenty of stretch-out space, but some of the bits and pieces show subpar quality.

A generous wheelbase gives the Impala serious passenger space front and rear. Four 6-footers could do a cross-country road trip in perfect comfort, which is precisely what we expect from a large sedan. The wide, plush seats offer a variety of upholstery options, including cloth, a cloth/leatherette combination and leather. The standard 60/40-split folding rear seatbacks add useful additional cargo space to the already ample 18.8-cubic-foot trunk.

When equipped with the available 3.6-liter V6, the 2016 Chevrolet Impala sedan delivers praiseworthy performance and fuel economy. Capable of sprinting to 60 mph in less than seven seconds, the Impala sedan is quicker than one might guess, and its ample torque and effectively programmed automatic transmission permit confident passing maneuvers. The base 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine is unique in this segment, but it is surprisingly capable, with a respectable 196 horsepower to pull around the Impala’s sizable body. Using start/stop technology, the 2.5-liter engine attains 31 mpg on the highway, not as impressive as some hybrid and diesel models, but also nowhere near as expensive. Regardless of which model you choose, you’ll find a comfortable sedan with a big-car ride, a luxurious interior and one of the most refined road experiences in the segment.

MYLINK VALET MODEHidden behind the Impala’s 8-inch color touch screen is a mini vault, accessible only via a 4-digit PIN code. Beyond providing a safe spot for keys, wallets or smartphones, the system also locks out any private information entered via the MyLink system, including your address book.NATURAL-GAS IMPALAThe 2016 Chevy Impala sedan is just one of two cars that can be factory equipped to run on CNG (the other is the considerably smaller Honda Civic). When so equipped, the Impala can run on gasoline or CNG, making it highly desirable should another oil crisis pop up.

The Chevy Impala for 2016 may be considered a mainstream vehicle, but inside it feels more like a premium or even luxury sedan. Cabin materials are attractive and upscale. The large dash is notable for its flowing, well-executed design. Upper-trim models boast leather seats, soft trim and an 8-inch touch-screen command system in the center dash. Unlike some rivals, Chevy's big sedan doesn't feel the need to make all controls touch-oriented. Settings for climate, volume, fan speed and the like are easily changed with buttons and dials. We found the front seats comfortable and attractive. Rear-seat legroom is excellent.

Chevrolet’s 2016 Impala is nothing like previous generations. This big 4-door now has serious presence thanks to its long hood, sculpted front end and long, sweptback roof. In front are low-profile projector-beam headlights. Top-line LTZ models have HID headlights and LED daytime running lights, taking a further step upscale. The overwhelming sense in the new Impala is one of contemporary luxury. That's enhanced by an array of 18-, 19- and 20-inch wheels. Though the trunklid is exceptionally short, trunk space is not compromised: a substantial 18.8 cubic feet of cargo space (or 10 cubic feet for CNG models).

Depending on trim, the 2016 Impala sedan from Chevrolet will be a comfortable and competent 5-passenger sedan with generous room, or a luxury-like cruiser filled with advanced safety and entertainment systems. But even a base Chevrolet Impala comes with a power driver's seat, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, and 60/40-split-folding rear seats. Standard audio is provided by a 6-speaker AM/FM/CD system with USB/auxiliary inputs and 4.2-inch color display. Stepping up trim levels gains features such as dual-zone climate control, an 8-inch color infotainment screen, Bluetooth audio streaming, a leather interior, push-button start and heated front seats.

A variety of options allows you to equip the Impala like a luxury sedan, as does stepping up trim levels. Notable options include navigation, a rearview camera, keyless entry, keyless start, a heated steering wheel, a power tilting/telescoping steering column, and heated and ventilated front seats. Bose surround-sound audio is available, and easy-to-use MyLink is standard on LT and LTZ models. The 4G LTE feature with built-in Wi-Fi turns the Impala into a mobile hotspot. In addition to its standard 10 airbags and traction-control systems, the 2016 Impala offers adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure alert.

Three engine choices are available in the 2016 Chevy Impala family sedan, all transferring power to the front wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission. The base engine is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder. This powerplant aims to be the fuel-saver with its start-stop to turn off the engine at idle. The more robust offering is a 3.6-liter V6 that makes over 300 horsepower. Last is a modified version of the V6 that runs on regular unleaded gasoline or compressed natural gas. The tank for the latter is in the trunk, cutting into cargo space. CNG range is expected to be 150 miles, after which the car switches to gasoline for an estimated total range of 500 miles. Drivers can also manually select fuel source.2.5-liter inline-4196 horsepower @ 6,300 rpm186 lb-ft of torque @ 4,400 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 22/31 mpg3.6-liter V6305 horsepower @ 6,800 rpm264 lb-ft of torque @ 5,300 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 19/29 mpg3.6-liter V6 (bi-fuel)260 horsepower @ 4,800 rpm (gasoline, estimated)230 horsepower @ 4,800 rpm (CNG, estimated)247 lb-ft of torque @ 4,800 rpm (gasoline, estimated)218 lb-ft of torque @ 4,800 rpm (CNG, estimated)EPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/25 mpg (gasoline), 16/24 mpg (CNG)

The 2016 Chevy Impala sedan has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of roughly $ 28,000 for an LS model with the 4-cylinder engine. Impala V6 models start around $ 31,200 and can reach the low-$ 40,000 mark. The new bi-fuel gasoline/CNG Impala starts just over $ 38,300. At its base price, the 2016 Impala undercuts the Toyota Avalon, Nissan Maxima, Hyundai Azera and Kia Cadenza, though all of those come standard with a V6 and their prices become more comparable with a V6 Impala. V6 models of the Dodge Charger and Ford Taurus, meanwhile, start near the base price of a 4-cylinder Impala. Be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying for their Chevy Impala. In the years ahead we expect the Impala's resale value to be good, outpacing its Ford and Dodge rivals, but still trailing that of the Toyota Avalon.

Chevrolet Impala Overview and History

The design work what impressed us the most.
Chevrolet is the auto equivalent of a gene-boosted steroid-pumped feline. The ferocious cat was groomed by Swiss born racing driver Louis Chevrolet and business whiz Buick resurrector and former GM head William Durant, as a joint venture that started in 1910. Shortly after Durant was forced out of GM, he partnered with Chevrolet, whom he had previously employed at his Buick racing team, to regain the popularity he had lost.

The Chevy headquarters was set in Detroit and the newly formed brand was baptized, receiving its famous “bowtie” logo in 1913. There are several hypotheses as to how the logo design came to be, two of them being the closest to unanimous acceptance. One of the theories hints at the logo having been designed after a poster Durant had seen in a French hotel while the second claims the “bowtie” is actually a stylized representation of the Swiss flag cross.

No matter how it originated, the golden Chevy logo persisted. In fact, the brand grew at such a fast pace that it allowed Durant to regain ownership of GM in 1916. After having become wealthy enough, Durant bought a smashing 54.5 percent of GM's shares, reinstating himself as head of the auto empire.

Soon after the takeover, Chevrolet was absorbed into GM, becoming a separate division. Having gained even more strength after the merger, the newly formed entity was quick in starting off production and launched the model D in 1918. The V8 35 hp engines fitted on these cars were replaced by smaller 6 cylinder ones, that proved particularly successful on commercial vehicles. The engine gained reputation due to its high durability and earned the “cast iron wonder” nickname.

Only a few years later, Chevy revealed the SUV in its archaic form: the Suburban Carryall. Sporting rough terrain riding capabilities, seating for 8 and weighing around 1½ tons, it marked the beginning of Chevy's future SUV line-up.

The American producer continued its successful innovations streak by introducing the Powerglide transmission in 1950, becoming the first low-price competitor to equip its vehicles with automatic shifting. Shortly after the introduction of the fully automatic transmission, the legendary Corvette was born.

The Vette had such a good reception that it remained the longest running Chevy model in the brand's history, having also been the first American sports car to enter mass production. The Vette also premiered the usage of lightweight construction materials for the car's body, like plastic, at that time.

Following the acclaim garnered by the Vette's release, Chevy launched several other models, including the flashy Impala and the short lived air-cooled Corvair. During the 60's, Chevy reached its sales peak with 3 cars out of any 10 sold in the US. However, before such a performance was achieved, Chevy designed a new small-block V8 engine used to equip its '55 truck range.

This particular engine made it till today, going through plenty of modifications in the process ranging from lightweight, durable aluminum construction to ECU managed control and modern fuel injection for better dosage and increased power.

Although Chevy has been registering lower sales in the past few years due to uncontrolled brand extension, some of the “bowtie” emblazoned automobiles have become either cult classics or vintage collectibles, four wheeled icons as reminders of a past age of glory.

2016 Chevrolet Impala Consumer Reviews

LTZ w/2LZ 4dr Sedan (3.6L 6cyl 6A)
Almost drives itself.
I got all options and it almost requires a co-pilot to learn and operate all functions. Technology is off the charts. Plug in a USB drive loaded with music and the sound is amazing. Say "play Sounds of Silence"... the song plays. Say " play Leon Bedbone" .... all Redbone songs que-up and begin playing. Say call Joe... car asks "cell or home?" Then dials your choice from your cell phone, no monthly charge. The 8 inch navigation also works without subscription. Set cruise control, car slows as you approach car in front of you and resumes as he speeds up, keeping you at a chosen distance without touching controls. Car in front slams on breaks.... Impala breaks automatically. Warning lights on side view mirror if someone in the blind spot. Lane departure warning. The list goes on and on. The only negative I found is: 1.) no aux input for radio anymore but I guess everything is Bluetooth now. 2.) No SD card slot. but for $ 10 you can but a USB drive with a SD card slot and there are at least 2 USB ports. I would also say the ride noise level is a touch higher than say a Lexus or Mercedes but with the radio on and an extra $ 10,000 in my pocket to absorb sound, I don't hear a thing. The fuel economy is better than EPA rating and the 305 HP v-6 gets to 60 mph in about 6 seconds!!!

LTZ w/2LZ 4dr Sedan (3.6L 6cyl 6A)
Best vehicle I found for the $ $ $
I did a ton of research online before making my decision. I considered every large sedan below $ 40,000 and found that the LTZ was the best car that I could buy. When I finally saw it in person it confirmed my choice. The car is filled with all of the latest technology if properly equipped and has more than enough room for 5 people with a huge trunk. Power is more than adequate though the transmission is a little busy hunting for the right gear. It just takes some getting used to as its trying to maximize fuel economy. The RemoteLink app is a brilliant piece of work. The ability to safely start your car then send it your next destination saves time and is just downright cool. Search for an in-stock top-of-the-line model to find the best value for the money. Looks like the other reviewers may have had a bad sales experience but no such complaints here

3 X Lucky
This is my 3rd Impala since 2004. I traded the 04 just a few yrs. ago for a pre-owned 2013. (All I had done to besides regular service , was brakes, and tires once, traded it with150,000 miles). Then bought a pre-owned 2013 LTZ. ( Besides regular service and a set of tires ) traded it with 65,000 miles on it for a 2016 model. I have had this one for a week and love it! Averaging 24 mpg in city! ( with a V6 ) Looks and drives great, with plenty of room (I am 6'2" ). Looking forward to my road trip next month. I have either been 3X lucky or these are just great cars.

First Car last car
My first car 51 years ago was a Chevy, Haven't bought one since until I test drove the new Impala LTZ. Very nice, I came out of a CTS which I liked a lot , I like this at lest as much for $ 20,000 less. Had the car now for 18 months and like it as much now as then have had not problems. Two year now and absolutely love it. Had no problems at all.

2014 Chevrolet Impala
"Looks great, runs good, but a couple irritations"
It looks great, runs fine (I have the V6), but a couple things irritate me quite often. One is storage in the car is pitiful. For example, the "Glove box" isn't even big enough to hold the owners manuals, let alone anything else; other storage compartments are just as bad; no pocket for sunglasses in headliner; even the door pockets are not good for much, although they can hold a beverage. Second thing that annoys (usually daily) is how the dash and infotainment center brightness auto-adjust to ambient light (dims as if it is night when it shouldn't) and there is no over-ride short of constantly readjusting how bright your nighttime brightness will be (several times on many days). This makes the back up camera useless in those situations unless you manually readjust the nighttime brightness. Also had to repair a few failures that were not expected.
