Incredibly lavish and powerful, the 2015 Rolls-Royce Phantom is blessed with solid BMW engineering and hand-crafted design elements that cover every inch of its vast interior and exterior, making it nearly as enjoyable from the driver seat as it is from the backseat.

The 2015 Rolls-Royce Phantom is a stately, prestigious, ultra-luxury sedan and it's also one of the most customizable vehicles on the planet. Built and assembled largely by hand, this massive four-door combines relentlessly impressive workmanship and high-end materials even before you start your journey down the options list. And whether you consider lambs-wool floor mats or a cigar humidor in the glove box to be gloriously opulent or gratuitously ostentatious, there's no denying the posh excellence the Phantom can provide.

Riding in a Rolls-Royce is an experience all its own. The V12 engine isn't all that powerful in comparison to some other flagship sedans, but it still moves the nearly-three-ton sedan down the road with ease. The ride-quality and the whisper-quiet interior make for a peaceful journey regardless of the road surface while custom veneers and soft leather line nearly every inch of the interior. You'd be hard-pressed to find a nicer place to sit while you're stuck in rush-hour traffic, and the extended-wheelbase version of the Phantom has legroom to spare, even for the tallest of millionaires.

By nature of the Phantom's status it's difficult to compare it with any other car on the road, but if you feel the need to cross-shop, there are a few potential rivals worth considering. The 2015 Bentley Mulsanne feels somewhat sportier and commands a similar kind of attention, but it doesn't feel quite as chic. The 2015 Mercedes Benz S-Class is also appealing and it may seem like a bargain at around half the Phantom's price, but discerning eyes will see a significant difference in materials quality.  Unquestionably, the 2015 Rolls Royce Phantom is one of the most exclusive cars currently available. For those that can afford it, it will feel pretty special.

The 2015 Rolls-Royce Phantom is an ultra-luxury sedan available in base and extended-wheelbase (EWB) body styles. There is seating for five passengers, or four when equipped with the individual rear seat configuration. The Phantom comes in one very complete trim level.

Standard features include 21-inch alloy wheels, an electronically adjustable air suspension, automatic and adaptive LED headlights, front and rear parking sensors, multiple parking and maneuvering cameras (rearview, top-view, front-side), power-closing rear coach doors, a power-closing trunk lid, soft-close front doors, automatic wipers, a sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, 10-way power front seats, heated front and rear seats, driver memory functions, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a wool and cashmere headliner, and two umbrellas, hidden in the front doors.

Standard electronics includes Bluetooth phone connectivity, a navigation system, a multifunction electronics interface with an 8.8-inch display and pop-out controller, voice controls and Rolls-Royce Assist emergency telematics. Audio is provided by a Harman Kardon Lexicon Logic 7 surround-sound audio system with 15 speakers (including two floor-mounted subwoofers), a glovebox-mounted six-DVD changer, an auxiliary audio jack, a USB/iPod interface and satellite radio.

The Phantom EWB adds 10 inches of rear legroom, four-zone climate control and reversible foot rests.

As you'd expect with a vehicle like the Phantom, the options list is vast and includes things more likely to be found in a luxury home than in a car, including power-adjustable rear seats (with a choice of a fixed center seat or center console), a "rear theatre" (an entertainment system with two 12-inch DVD screens built into the standard drop-down picnic tables), a rear bar, power rear-window curtains, a glovebox cigar humidor, veneer 'picnic' tables, trunk-mounted parasols, a partition separating the driver from the rear-seat passengers, mother of pearl inlays and a "Starlight" roof liner with embedded LED lights emulating nighttime stars (precise celestial maps can be applied at an extra cost). Really, though, Rolls-Royce's Bespoke program will allow for any and all customization you can come up with. At the very least, the paint and trim combinations are nearly endless, since, like many top-tier carmakers, Rolls-Royce will mix paint and dye leather to match any color sample a customer brings into the dealership.

Another notable option is the Dynamic package, which adds stiffer antiroll bars (to sharpen up the big sedan's handling); sportier suspension, transmission and brake calibrations; a thicker-rimmed steering wheel and visible exhaust tips.

The 2015 Rolls-Royce Phantom is powered by a 6.7-liter V12 that produces 453 horsepower and 531 pound-feet of torque that sends power to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rolls-Royce claims that the standard Phantom will go from zero to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds, while the larger EWB version is a tenth of a second slower.

Whether you opt for the standard- or extended-wheelbase Phantom, the EPA gives it a fuel economy estimate of 14 mpg combined (11 city/19 highway).

Standard safety features include antilock brakes, traction control and stability control, active front head restraints, side airbags for front occupants and full-length side curtain airbags. In addition, front and rear parking sensors are standard, as is a camera system that shows rear, side and overhead views to assist you in parking and pulling into traffic in this very large sedan.

For a vehicle that weighs as much as a Chevy Suburban, the 2015 Rolls-Royce Phantom's handling composure is rather remarkable. We have yet to sample a Phantom with the Dynamic package, but we've been pleasantly surprised by the ultra-luxury sedan's athleticism in previous tests. The steering is light and communicative, and the Roller feels confident around turns thanks to its well-sorted air suspension. There's no getting around its enormous dimensions, however; in close quarters or on tight roads, the Phantom can be a bear to maneuver.

The V12 is strong and nearly silent, making full acceleration a somewhat eerie experience from the driver's lofty perch. It's ultimately not that powerful, but it's incredibly smooth. Ride quality, meanwhile, is truly regal. The Phantom's suspension is supple yet controlled, dispatching bumps, potholes and even speed humps as if they weren't even there.

The interior of the Phantom is decidedly formal and unlike any car you've ever driven. Its bolt-upright dashboard, clocklike instruments, thin-rimmed steering wheel and throne-like seats give you an elevated, almost SUV view of the road ahead. The cabin is full of beautiful details, too, including up to 43 pieces of multilayer wood veneers cut from the same log to ensure uniformity. Every square foot of leather inside the Phantom comes from cows raised in high-altitude Alpine meadows free of thorns and barbed wire, so as to minimize the chance of markings on the hides. Certain color and wood treatments can liven the space up considerably, and the hand craftsmanship lends a palpable sense of warmth.

Located behind a panel containing the Phantom's center-mounted clock is an 8.8-inch information screen that enhances usability of the car's many controls, including a split-screen interface that lets the driver control things like the radio while displaying the navigation map as well. The entire setup is essentially a disguised version of BMW's iDrive interface (right down to the multifunction controller that pops out of the Phantom's center console) and generally speaking, it works quite well. You'll initially want to take some time to familiarize yourself with the menus before you hit the road but the system responds quickly to commands and the crisp display makes it easy to decipher with a quick glance. Other controls, particularly those for the front seats and climate adjustment, are unusual and may take some time to figure out.

The driver's seat though, is probably not where most Phantom owners (especially those with the EWB) will be spending most of their time. In their more-likely position of the back seat, the standard wide bench seats three in comfort, or two in even more comfort with the optional power-adjustable individual seats. With the rear seats set back deep into the car's body, it can get a little dark, especially with the available curtains drawn, but we expect that's exactly how many Phantom owners would like it. Perhaps the best thing about the Phantom's rear quarters is getting in and out through its rear-hinged doors, which have integrated umbrellas in the event that your arrival occurs during a downpour.

All variants of the 2015 Rolls-Royce Phantom are about pampering and prestige, but their driving characteristics differ by model. In sedans, whether standard or the even-larger long-wheelbase model, the standout trait is its quiet and serenity. There is good power on tap – 453 horsepower that can shuffle this behemoth to 60 mph in under six seconds, if you must ask – but the Phantom sedan is neither engaging nor much fun. It's the VIP in back who benefits most from this massive 4-door Rolls-Royce. Should you decide to drive yourself, be careful which hat you wear lest some think you're the chauffeur. While no backwoods burner, the smaller and sportier-tuned Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe is the model to have for drivers who favor prestige over passenger roominess. For top-down motoring, think of the Phantom Drophead Coupe as the finest land yacht.

REAR-HINGED DOORS Much like the classic suicide-door Lincoln of the 1960s, the Phantom’s rear-hinged coach doors add an air of class and timelessness to this massive luxury car. They also aid in the ease of entry. Once inside, a touch of a button is all that is required to automatically close the doors. RETRACTING HOOD ORNAMENT There are a number of elegant features both inside and outside the Rolls-Royce Phantom, but one of the most impressive is the iconic Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament. Updated for the realities of today’s modern world, the Spirit safely retracts into the grille when the car is not in use.

The interior of the Rolls-Royce Phantom luxury car is elegant yet surprisingly simple, with an emphasis on leather and wood. Instead of myriad buttons, knobs and switches, Rolls takes a minimalist approach, even with the iDrive-derived system sourced from its BMW parent that allows the driver to control navigation, radio and other functions with a rotary dial and planetary buttons. Sedans can be had with a 3-across bench in back or individual seating for two. The Phantom coupe and convertible models have two rear seats. A captivating Starlight Headliner looks like a galaxy implanted in the ceiling.

The 2015 Rolls-Royce Phantom is, in a word, enormous. Even the “smallest” versions, the coupe and convertible, are more than 18 feet long. The Phantom sedan is even larger at over 19 feet, while the Extended Wheelbase version takes the cake at just under 20 feet in length. Phantom models boast plenty of wooden parts mixed with metal, and the Drophead Coupe convertible is inspired by J-class yachts of the 1930s and stands out with a massive rear teak deck. All feature rear-hinged doors, which look especially extravagant on coupe and convertible models as the driver and front-seat passenger enter and exit.

As with other Rolls-Royces, the 2015 Phantom is typically bespoke, meaning it's customized to suit a buyer’s taste. What all owners can expect are an 8.8-inch color display, a LOGIC7 Surround Sound system and a central control module for infotainment features. LED headlights are standard, while a multi-camera system gives drivers a bird’s-eye view of the car when in reverse. Lambs-wool carpet and fine leather coddle passengers. But technology such as blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning and adaptive cruise control – all of which can be found in the less expensive Rolls-Royce Ghost or a nice Kia – are absent in this $ 400,000 ultra-luxury car.

With a bespoke Rolls-Royce Phantom, what you want is limited to your imagination. From the charming trunk-mounted umbrellas to the elegant mother-of-pearl inlays, Rolls has a long list of ways to make each Phantom unique to its owner. Popular options include a rear-seat entertainment system with twin screens, picnic tables mounted to the backs of the front seats, and a Dynamic Package for the sedan that grants sportier performance. However, you won't find sophisticated technology such as a satellite-aided transmission and night-vision system offered on its Ghost and Wraith siblings, never mind the semi-autonomous driving features that dazzle in a Mercedes S-Class.

All 2015 Rolls-Royce Phantoms are rear-wheel drive and powered by a big, naturally aspirated V12 engine. Not long ago, Rolls-Royce would merely say that power was “adequate.” Nowadays the British automaker doesn’t mind backing up that assertion with data: The Phantom sedan can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds, while the coupe and convertible can do it in 5.6 seconds. These aren't the fastest figures, but are certainly swift for such a prodigious vehicle. A “power reserve” gauge shows the car using just 10 percent of available power while cruising at 70 mph. Sedan and convertible Phantoms are electronically limited to a top speed of 150 mph, and coupes go up to 155 mph. All models use a newer, 8-speed ZF automatic transmission. 6.75-liter V12 453 horsepower @ 5,350 rpm 531 lb-ft of torque @ 3,500 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 11/19 mpg

For the record, the 2015 Rolls-Royce Phantom begins with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price over $ 412,500 for a standard-wheelbase sedan. The Phantom Coupe starts over $ 443,000. The most expensive Rolls-Royce Phantom models are the Drophead Coupe and extended-wheelbase (EWB) sedan, which begin around $ 485,000. Adding options – and who wouldn’t? – can easily lift these figures by tens of thousands. At these prices, the Phantom takes the crown as the most expensive new sedan you can buy, easily outpacing the Bentley Mulsanne by over $ 100,000. At this point we'd usually direct you to the Fair Purchase Price to see what others are paying for their new car. But we don't foresee much haggling for a Rolls-Royce. We also don't see owners fretting much over depreciation, and that's probably good. Given the Phantom's astronomical price, its resale value can easily drop by $ 150,000 in a few years' time.

Rolls-Royce Phantom Overview and History

The Rolls-Royce Phantom Series VII here has been updated for 2012 coming with visual and mechanical tweaks. A new Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe was released in 2012 coming with updated technology, revised powertrain and a slightly changed design. The 2006 Drophead Coupe is the newest convertible model launched by the British car manufacturer which is entirely based on the Phantom model unveiled in 2003.
What's more luxurious and opulent than a Rolls Royce? Well, nothing else really, except maybe gold-plated Porsche, but since they don't have a whole line of those yet, people tend to stick to Rolls Royces. Born out of the partnership between Charles Stewart Rolls and Frederick Henry Royce, the company started out in 1906 in Britain.

Right from the start, they set out to build “the best car in the world” as the Silver Ghost was named. Attention to detail and outstanding performance meant that the Silver Ghost enjoyed success right from its launch in 1906.

As with many other car manufacturers, during the First World War, Rolls Royce was turned to war production, but instead of building cars, they build airplane engines like the Eagle which was used by half of of the Allied fighters.

After the war, the company continued research in the engine department and came up with the “R” engine which was used in planes and cars to set new world records. Post war developed cars include the Phantom I and the Phantom II increasing production. Because the demand increased, Rolls Royce had to open up a second plant in America, in Massachusetts.

Another successful move was the acquisition of Bentley in 1931 which would later prove beneficial for both brands. For a long time Rolls Royces and Bentleys would be mechanically identical.

The R engine was eventually developed into the praised Merlin engine. It was during the Second World War that the Merlin really proved itself, as all Hurricanes, Lancasters and Spitfires involved in the Battle for Britain would be fitted with such engines. Royce would not live to see the success of his engine as he died in 1933, aged 70.

Car production resumed at Rolls Royce after the conflagration and, as sales were increasing steadily, the company opened up new plants in Crewe, Chesire along the one in Derby. The former would become the company's formal home starting with 1946. Models from this period include the Silver Wraith, the last car to have its body built by an independent coachbuilder. After this, all Rolls royce cars would be built completely in-house.

The 40s and 50s were prosperous times for the Rolls Royce company and that is why, in 1966, the manufacturer decided to further expand its influence and buy out Bristol Siddeley, the other great aero engine manufacturer in Britain. In 1950 the Phantom IV, the most exclusive Rolls Royce ever was introduced. Only 18 cars were produced and all were delivered to royalty and heads of state. The Silver Cloud I and II also hail from this period, followed in the 60s by the Silver Cloud III and Phantom VI.

Starting with the 70s, Rolls Royce comes to a period of financial decline, owned in part to a failed contract to complete a new jet engine, the RB211. The government had to step in and in 1971 the company was nationalized but that didn't solve the problem. In 1973 the air and car industries were split by the government and the latter sold in order to keep the airplane industry rolling.

Rolls Royce Motors was bought in 1980 by Vickers PLC. The Silver Spirit Rolls Royce was developed in 1981, the first car under the new brand. It followed a whole new line, aimed at a younger market and it was much safer and met the emissions regulations.

The Vickers takeover would end in the 90s, as the company was put up for sale again. The omst likely buyer seemed to be the Germans over at BMW, as they already had some ties with Rolls Royce, providing parts for Bentley cars. But at the last minute they were outbid by Volkswagen, which brought things into an awkward situation. VW had rights to the Spirit of ecstasy mascot and the shape of the radiator grille, but BMW held the rights to the double R logo and the name of the brand.

The two companies arrived at an understanding since VW really wanted Bentley and decided to sell the right for the mascot to BMW for 40 million pounds. Staring with January 2003, the two brands, Rolls Royce and Bentley, which went a long way back would be now separated, Bentleys being produced by volkswagen and Rolls Royces by BMW.

That was also the year Rolls Royce launched the new Phantom, a car which has managed to draw out the new direction of the company for the coming century.

I have owned and still have a 2009 Kia amanti it is now 2024 I have 51000 miles on this car excellent handling in all weather except ice and deep snow very fast in traffic I think the handling is tight and responsive. My spouse has driven this on the interstate frequently and the first thing he did was get it up to 220 mph at this speed is floaty but under 80 mph just a pleasure to drive *****
