With its comfortable interior and large trunk, the 2013 Ford Taurus is an appealing rendition of the classic full-size American sedan.

Ford is churning out a whole line of appealing vehicles these days, including the 2013 Ford Taurus. It wasn't always this way. Though the darling of American sedan buyers during the 1980s, the Taurus of the 2000s was unceremoniously kicked to the curb (and rightly so) for its uninspiring design, lack of competitive features and mediocre performance. But that was then and this is now.

For 2013, the entire Chicago-built Taurus line gets a welcome face-lift, including a new grille, front fascia, wheels, front and rear lighting, rear fenders and deck lid (with available spoiler). To accompany the sportier design, Ford has retuned the suspension, switched over to electrically driven steering assist (now with a quicker ratio) and added a new mild torque-vectoring system to improve handling. Ford has also updated the brakes to improve brake pedal feel and shorten stopping distances.

Inside the cabin, the 2013 Taurus follows Ford's trend of incorporating the latest version(s) of the Microsoft-powered Sync and MyFord Touch systems, enhancing infotainment and connectivity. Ford has also added higher-quality materials and acoustic insulation to enhance interior comfort and refinement.

Finally, the standard V6 gains both power and efficiency, while the six-speed transmission gains true manual-shifting capability. All-wheel drive is still available for those of us who are weather-challenged. The optional high-output turbocharged V6 for the SHO model remains unchanged, but on the opposite side of the spectrum is a newly available turbocharged four-cylinder. With an estimated 26 mpg in combined city/highway driving, it should be a smart choice for buyers who want a big sedan with a small appetite for fuel.

Of course, the 2013 Ford Taurus isn't the only full-size sedan vying for your attention. The Chrysler 300 is also worth serious consideration given its style, performance and features. Checking out the new Hyundai Azera and Hyundai Genesis is also a good idea. But the dramatically improved 2013 Taurus is a solid choice, particularly if technology and efficiency are high on your list.

The 2013 Ford Taurus is a full-size five-passenger sedan offered in SE, SEL, Limited and SHO trim levels.

Standard equipment on the entry-level SE includes 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, integrated blind spot mirrors, LED taillights, an exterior access keypad, cruise control, air-conditioning, a six-way power driver seat (manual recline), a 60/40-split-folding rear seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and a six-speaker sound system with CD player and an auxiliary audio jack.

The SEL adds 18-inch wheels, heated mirrors, remote ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, upgraded cloth upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, satellite radio and the Sync system, which allows you to control Bluetooth phones, iPods and other media players through voice commands and the car's controls.

Options on the SEL are extensive: Group 201A includes rear parking sensors, an additional center speaker, MyFord Touch (includes a large center touchscreen plus two additional displays in the gauge cluster), two USB ports and expanded Sync functionality. Group 202A further adds 19-inch wheels, a rearview camera, keyless ignition/entry, ambient interior lighting and power-adjustable pedals. Free-standing SEL options include leather upholstery (packaged with heated front seats and a six-way power passenger seat), a power sunroof, a rear spoiler and a voice-activated navigation system.

Most of the features in the SEL's optional packages are standard on the Taurus Limited, along with perforated leather upholstery, eight-way power front seats with power lumbar, driver-seat memory functions and a wood-trimmed steering wheel. The Limited's optional 301A package adds an auto-dimming driver-side mirror, a blind-spot warning system with cross traffic alert, HD radio, heated/ventilated front seats, a power-adjustable steering wheel and a 12-speaker Sony sound system. The top-tier 302A package further adds an automated parking system, automatic high beams, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats and a rear sunshade. Additional stand-alone options for the Limited are 20-inch wheels, the sunroof, adaptive cruise control and collision warning with brake support, the navigation system and multicontour front seats with active bolsters and a massage feature.

The Taurus SHO includes all of the Limited major equipment and supplements it with a more powerful V6 engine, all-wheel drive, a sport-tuned suspension, paddle shifters on the steering wheel, uniquely tuned steering, xenon headlamps and unique leather upholstery with faux-suede inserts. The optional SHO Performance package adds performance brake pads, recalibrated steering and suspension, a different final-drive ratio, stability control defeat, 20-inch wheels, summer tires and a faux-suede steering wheel.

The 2013 Taurus is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 290 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission (now with a manual shift button on the console shifter) and front-wheel drive are standard, while all-wheel drive is available as an option on SEL and Limited models. EPA fuel economy stands at 19 mpg city/29 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined with front-drive. Opting for AWD drops those numbers to 18/26/21.

New for 2013 is an optional turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Rated at 240 hp and a stout 270 lb-ft of torque, this engine is the fuel economy leader of the line. The highway estimate stands at 32 mpg while the more telling combined figure rates an impressive 26 mpg.

The Taurus SHO gets a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 that makes 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic with shift paddles are standard. In performance testing, the Taurus SHO went from zero to 60 mph in a quick 5.8 seconds. Fuel economy for the SHO is 17/25/20.

Every 2013 Ford Taurus comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front-seat side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags and integrated blind spot mirrors. A rearview camera and rear parking sensors are standard on Limited and SHO models and optional on the SEL. Optional on the Limited and SHO are a pre-collision warning system (included with adaptive cruise control) and a blind-spot warning system bundled with a cross-traffic warning system, which warns you of approaching cars or pedestrians when backing up.

In government crash tests, the Taurus earned an overall rating of four stars out of a possible five, with four stars for overall frontal crash protection and five stars for overall side crash protection. The Taurus also received the best rating of "Good" in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's frontal-offset, side and roof strength tests.

On the road, the 2013 Ford Taurus offers a comfortable ride. All Taurus models now use a version of electric-assist power steering to further aid in fuel economy. The SHO's is the sportiest with its unique tuning, but all are reasonably weighted and allow for easy maneuverability in parking situations. The firmer sport-tuned suspension underpinning the SHO model sharpens up the handling noticeably.

That said, there's no hiding the Taurus' hefty weight and grand dimensions. Where other large sedans drive and feel like smaller cars, the Taurus still exhibits some lumbering characteristics around corners. Not helping matters is the car's challenging rear visibility.

The SHO's twin-turbo V6 offers acceleration that falls just short of its V8-powered competitors from Chrysler and Dodge, but it returns fuel economy that puts them to shame. Even so, we think most folks will be just as happy with the standard V6, while pocketing the substantial price difference. Meanwhile, those looking for maximum fuel efficiency needn't settle for lackluster performance, as the available turbocharged four smoothly provides more than sufficient all-around thrust while earning high fuel economy numbers.

The 2013 Ford Taurus offers a classy-looking passenger cabin, particularly with the MyFord Touch system installed. The seating is quite comfortable, especially with the optional high-tech "multicontour" front seats with built-in massage. The backseat offers generous head- and legroom even for good-sized adults. At 20.1 cubic feet, the trunk is one of the largest you'll find on any sedan. Fold down the rear seats and the Taurus offers up even more space.

On the downside, the car's rising beltline, thick roof pillars and tall center console can make the interior feel confining despite its voluminous scale. To Ford's credit, some of the previous-year's Taurus drawbacks have been addressed. Some of the hard plastics that gave the cabin a decidedly low-rent appearance and feel have been replaced by soft-touch materials, and the latest-generation MyFord Touch system is a definite improvement.

The standard MyFord Touch interface consists of three display screens and the ability to input commands for various audio, phone and navigation functions via voice, touch controls or buttons on the steering wheel. It's a smart idea in theory, and it does provide some nice customization possibilities. Unfortunately, there's a learning curve involved, and even with this year's update, we've found the system can be slow to respond and the touchscreen's icons are difficult to locate and press on the move.

The 2013 Taurus takes the full-size sedan to new levels, delivering a smooth, quiet and comfortable ride, with the adept handling and driver feedback usually found in a more enthusiast-oriented car. Credit for the Taurus' excellent driving dynamics goes in part to "torque vectoring" and "curve control" modules. These systems use very slight brake force applied at specific wheels to improve the car's steering when moving rapidly around tight corners. From the driver's seat, we found the sightlines to be better than expected, but the wide B-pillar located just over the driver's shoulder and thick front and rear pillars somewhat hindered our view to the side. Fortunately, the Taurus' exterior mirrors are a vast help, as is the optional "BLIS" system that warns of objects too close to the vehicle's side when changing lanes. Ford's new 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine has no problem delivering power with no perceptible turbo lag.

2.0-LITER ECOBOOST ENGINEFord's turbocharged 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine cranks out 240 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque (that's more torque than Ford's standard 3.5-liter V6), yet attains an impressive 32-mpg highway figure.FORD'S MYKEYThis system can be used to restrict vehicle speed, limit audio system volume and control other functions when a specific key is used to start the vehicle. In effect, MyKey lets parents better control the driving habits of their children, even when they aren't along for the ride.

The Ford Taurus' interior can easily carry five passengers, although we think four would be more comfortable. Up front, available massaging seats help negate leg and back fatigue on long drives and can also be climate controlled to provide both heating and cooling. Most of the Taurus audio and navigation controls can be operated via buttons on the steering wheel or by voice command. Further separating itself from the pedestrian family sedan, the 2013 Taurus offers such upscale options as automatic high-beam dimmers, Adaptive Cruise Control, BLIS (Blind Spot Information System), and a power sunshade for the rear window.

Compared to most sedans, the Ford Taurus is far from being in the norm. It's a tall sedan, with wide doors and a low roof, and a steeply raked windshield and rear window. The Taurus' large rear deck creates a vast 20-cubic-foot trunk capable of carrying a week's worth of luggage or two golf bags, and the low liftover makes it easy to get things in and out.

Included on the 2013 Taurus' list of standard equipment are a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, power driver's seat, steering-wheel controls for audio and cruise control, power windows with one-touch up/down functions for the driver, and Ford's programmable MyKey system. The standard audio system is a 6-speaker CD player with an auxiliary audio input jack. Standard safety features include antilock disc brakes, electronic traction and stability control, dual front airbags, front-seat-mounted side airbags and side-curtain airbags protecting both the front and rear passengers.

Many of the high-tech features offered on the Taurus are typically reserved for more expensive luxury cars. Among the more interesting options are seats with massage function, automatic high beams, a heated steering wheel, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and adaptive cruise control with collision warning. Other options include heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, Intelligent Access with push-button start, a power rear sunshade, power adjustable pedals, the SYNC voice-activated communications and entertainment system (standard on Limited and SHO), and a 12-speaker premium Sony audio system. On the safety front, the optional Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) alerts the driver when other vehicles are in his blind spots, while Cross-Traffic Alert warns of approaching traffic when you're backing up.

All 2013 Ford Taurus trims start with a 288-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Optional on front-wheel-drive (FWD) models is the new 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged 4-cylinder. The Taurus SHO offers 77 more horsepower than the standard Taurus V6, thanks to the use of direct-injection technology and twin turbochargers. With the exception of the SE trim, all Taurus models also feature steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, providing manual control of the transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is optional on both SEL and Limited trims and standard on the Taurus SHO.3.5-liter V6288 horsepower @ 6,500 rpm254 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 19/29 mpg (FWD), 18/26 mpg (AWD)2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4240 horsepower @ 5,500 rpm270 lb-ft of torque @ 3,000 rpmEPC city/highway fuel economy: 22/32 mpg3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 (SHO)365 horsepower @ 5,550 rpm350 lb-ft of torque @ 1,500-5,250 rpmEPA estimated city/highway fuel economy: 17/25 mpg

The 2013 Taurus has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting just over $ 27,000 for the SE trim, around $ 29,500 for the mid-level SEL, close to $ 34,000 for the Limited trim, and right at $ 40,000 for the high-performance Taurus SHO. All-wheel drive adds about $ 1,850 to the price tag, while the 2.0-liter EcoBoost is another $ 1,000. A nicely equipped Limited runs about the same price as a V6 Hyundai Genesis. To get the best deal, be sure to take a look at the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to see what consumers in your area are currently paying for their Ford Taurus'. We expect the 2013 Ford Taurus to hold its value better than previous versions, easily outpacing residual values for the Chevrolet Impala, falling slightly behind the Chrysler 300, and landing well below the Toyota Avalon and Hyundai Azera.

Ford Taurus Overview and History

The Ford Taurus received a refresh for the 2013 model year. Ford presented the new sixth generation Taurus at the Detroit International Auto Show in 2009.
Henry Ford started the company in 1902 with $ 28,000 in cash from twelve investors, among which were John and Horace Dodge, who would later found the Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle Company. He was 40 years when he first established the company's first factory on Bagley Street, Detroit.

He would later incorporate the firm on June 16, 1903. Ford Motor Company would go on and label their models chronologically in alfabetical order, starting with the Model A to the Model K and Model S, which was Ford's last right-hand steering vehicle. Then, in 1908 Ford introduced the Model T, which was designed by Childe Harold Wills and two Hungarian immigrants, Joseph A. Galamb and Eugene Farkas. This model proved to be of quintessential Ford vehicle, placing the company among the most influential automotive brands in history.

The Ford Model T was reliable, practical and affordable, which made it a big hit in the US, where it was advertised as the middle-class man's vehicle. The car's success compelled Ford to expand his business and layout the basics of mass production principles in 1913 with the introduction of the world's first vehicle assembly line. By 1912, production figures for the Model T alone reached nearly 200,000 units.

This organizational innovation brought in the vehicle construction field allowed Ford to reduce chassis assembly time by as much as 10 hours, dropping from 12 ½ h to 2h 40 min.

Besides ensuring the efficiency of the production process, Ford turned his company into an interactive entity by announcing a new profit-sharing policy. This would grant buyers a cut of profits if sales reached 300,000. As expected, sales effortlessly reached the 300k threshold and went even further to hit a record 501,000 in 1915.

As part of a new set of financial tactics, Ford provided working places for the disabled who otherwise had a hard time finding a job, reduced work shifts and doubled all employee's salaries. Changes like these sparked a tremendous sales increase while also setting the base of modern working conditions.

Still, the US and Canadian market would prove to be too small to fit Ford's plans. By the mid 20's, the Ford label had crossed the ocean and reached England, France, Germany, Denmark, Austria as well as distant Australia. The company's activity on European grounds further helped the brand's revenue growth.

War would not shake the Ford company as bad as other car makers. Post WWI improvements include the introduction of four-wheel brakes and a series of new vehicle releases to match new consumer demands. In 1922 Ford entered the luxury car segment with the acquisition of the Lincoln Motor Company, named after Abraham Lincoln whom Henry Ford admired.

Ford Motor Co. was one of the few big American corporations to survive the Great Depression, although the plummeting automotive sales led the company to scale down its operations and lay off many workers. In May 1929, Ford Motor Co. signed an agreement with the Soviet Union to provide technical assistance until 1938 to construct an integrated automobile-manufacturing plant at Nizhny Novgorod, in exchange for the Soviets purchasing $ 13 million worth of automobiles and parts. Under this agreement many American engineers and skilled auto workers went in 1932 to work on the Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod (GAZ), or Gorki Automotive Plant. The few who remained in the Soviet Union after the completion of the plant fell victims to Stalin's Great Terror, ending either shot or exiled to Soviet gulags.

With the arrival of WWII Ford increased its influence on the global stage becoming an active player in the war effort, a thing underlined by US President Franklin Roosevelt referring to Detroit as the "Arsenal of Democracy." When the US War Department handed production of B-24 Liberator airplanes to Ford, the output rose to 20 airplanes per day instead of only one per day managed by the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation.

After WWII Ford continued its passenger vehicle operations and in 1955 introduced the iconic Thunderbird model. Then it introduced the Edsel brand in 1958, which proved to be a failure and was dissolved in 1960. Part Edsel's failure as an automotive brand resided in the onset of the 1957 recession in the States and the vehicle's high price tag.

Ford Motor Co. managed to get back up from its Edsel failure with the introduction of the Falcon model in 1960 and the Mustang in 1964. The company's next major step was represented by the formation of Ford Europe division in 1967.

Ford plunged into a state of brand-fatigue that would bring the company to the point of near bankruptcy. Following major sales losses in the 2000's, Ford was pinned against the wall by debts and the imminence of closing down.

Preferring to make it back on its own, Ford mortgaged all of its assets in 2006. As of then, the company has releases a variety of new models both under the Ford brand name and the rest of the sub-brands it owns such as fresher and edgier Mercuries and flashier Lincolns, Ford's luxury division. Business in Europe has also been good for Ford, especially after the introduction of the Focus model in 1997 and although it hasn't fully recovered, it's definitely on the way to regaining popularity.

2013 Ford Taurus Consumer Reviews

Elegant Full Sized Vehicle with Luxury and Spunk
We discovered the new Taurus through renting it first. We did not even realize the car was a Taurus because it was nothing like previous versions. We ended up renting it again for another trip and decided this was the car we would purchase after doing some research with other comparable cars. The 2013 Taurus really just feels like a complete luxury vehicle. This is the first American car we purchased in over twenty years. Every detail speaks to quality and design. For example the dashboard is not only very functional but extremely appealing aesthetically.

Cruiser for the 21st Century
The 2013 Taurus improves on an already excellent fullsized sedan from Ford. When I drove the Focus, Fusion, and Taurus back to back, several key points became clearly evident: 1) The Taurus is the quietest and most refined of the three; 2) the Taurus has the most interior space and sits the highest, providing an excellent view of the road ahead; 3) the Taurus has the highest build quality and feels exceptionally premium; 4) the Taurus is the heaviest and least fun to drive of the three; 5) the Taurus has the most limited visibility of the three. With this in mind, I recommend the Taurus only if the driver finds the visibility acceptable in parking and driving maneuvers, as I did.

Outstanding Vehicle
I've owned my 2013 Ford Taurus Limited for over a year. I am totally satisfied owning and driving this outstanding vehicle. I love the wide track stance (3 inches wider front and back than the Buick Lacrosse and Impala). The car is so quiet yet Motor Trend has a 0-60MPH in 6.6 seconds! It's fast and its not a SHO! Ford has a winner in the Taurus . My daughter has a 2010 Taurus and loves it. My neighbor also bought a 2012 and raves about it. I am keeping this beauty for a long time. The ride, comfort and reliability from Ford on this car is outstanding. Made in Chicago by an AMERICAN COMPANY!

A Great Value after Discounts
The Taurus wasn't on my list, but I gave it a test drive while shopping for a quiet, smooth car. At the time, I was considering the new Fusion. I'd driven the Taurus in 2010, and I was quite surprised by how much nicer it has gotten. Ford refreshed the design in 2013, and paid close attention to NVH concerns. Because the front seats are a little confining for a car this size, they even added softer surfaces around the driver. I would never pay sticker for any car, but the Taurus is a value with $ 7000 in manufacturer and dealer discounts. Be careful which tires you get. I found that the optional 20" tires really hurt ride quality. The 18s and 19s produce a posh ride, though.

2016 Ford Taurus
"Love this Taurus!"
Helped my mom locate it and pick it out, as this is her last new car purchase; bought it in July 2016, and this SEL was literally just one month old. Ruby Red shines so beautifully, still looks brand new. 50,000 miles===flawless miles! The only issue was the need to replace the battery after two years, in 2018. Warranty covered that in full. Taurus is perfect, comfortable, roomy and drives amazingly. She and I banter about who gets to drive next (that way she can enjoy the car as a passenger sometimes). Does have heated seats as an extra option. Beautiful, perfect car... can't wait to get my own next year (2019 if I can find one)

"Lifetime Ford customer"
Well appointed, interior, great sound system. Runs well, quiet ride. This Taurus limited has all the bells and whistles, and is a very comfortable car. My first trip was to Fl. Approx 1200 miles one way. I was impressed with the comfort and control.

2019 Ford Taurus
"Our favorite car"
Our 2019 Taurus is our third Taurus. It is a big, powerful, comfortable car that is a great cruiser and handles and rides well. Reminds us of the large cars we owned in the 1960's but with much greater safety and reliability. It is reassuring to have a heavy car in which you feel safe.
