The 2009 Chevrolet Colorado is an attractively styled light-duty pickup that appears competitive on paper. But out in the real world where passenger comfort and overall build quality really count, it doesn't quite measure up.

Higher fuel prices have changed many people's perceptions about what's truly needed from a pickup. Suddenly, small pickups are an acceptable alternative to full-size pickups for many people. You might think this trend would bode well for the 2009 Chevrolet Colorado. However, you'll want to think twice before buying Chevy's pint-sized pickup.

Things would appear to be looking up for the Colorado. For 2009, Chevrolet has effectively addressed our previous concerns about a lack of power by making a V8 engine available for the first time. It's a 5.3-liter V8 capable of 300 horsepower, and it should make the Colorado one of the quickest small pickups you can buy. Meanwhile, the previously available four- and five-cylinder engines are still available, promising enhanced fuel economy.

Unfortunately, that extra power or fuel economy will likely be largely forgotten as soon as you sit inside the Colorado. The interior is still bland, the seats are uncomfortable and the plastic trim looks and feels cheap. It's the same with the driving experience -- the ride is bouncy and there's plenty of road noise.

The 2009 Chevrolet Colorado compensates for its faults somewhat via relative affordability and a variety of powertrain choices. But overall, we still believe the Dodge Dakota, Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma are better trucks in almost every regard. If you're a budget-minded shopper with light-duty usage in mind -- and you have completely ruled out used pickups -- the Colorado may be worth checking out. But if you've set your sights on a refined and thoroughly capable small pickup, you'll want to skip the Chevrolet Colorado.

The 2009 Chevrolet Colorado is a compact pickup available with two- or four-wheel drive in three body-style configurations: regular cab, extended cab (with short reverse-opening doors) or crew cab (with four regular forward-swinging doors). Crew cabs come with a 5-foot cargo box, while other Colorados feature a 6-foot bed.

There are three primary trim levels to choose from on regular- and extended-cab models -- the base Work Truck, midlevel LS and top-of-the-line LT. The crew cab is offered in LT trim only. Inside, base vehicles are pretty spartan aside from air-conditioning and an AM/FM stereo. The LS is a better choice for most folks, with upgraded seating and trim and the opportunity to add more optional features. The LT trim is offered in three increasingly well-equipped flavors (extended cab and crew cab only): 1LT, 2LT and 3LT. Depending on your selection, you'll end up with features like an in-dash CD changer, satellite radio, a larger five-cylinder engine, full power accessories and remote keyless entry. A new value package (VL) combines popular options like the five-cylinder engine, full power accessories and an automatic transmission on the crew cab.

Three suspension packages are offered to tailor ride and handling to specific needs. They include the standard Z85, a Z71 off-road package and the new ZQ8 sport suspension with standard 18-inch wheels. Depending on trim level and body style, other major Colorado options include heated power leather seats and a sunroof.

Both the four- and five-cylinder engines carry over for the 2009 Colorado, although a 5.3-liter V8 is now available in extended-cab and crew-cab models. The standard 2.9-liter four-cylinder makes 185 hp and 190 pound-feet of torque, and an optional 3.7-liter inline-5 produces 242 hp and 242 lb-ft of torque. The 5.3-liter V8 (only offered on extended-cab and crew cab models) makes 300 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on most four-cylinder Colorados, with a four-speed automatic optional. The five-cylinder and V8 come with the automatic. Four-wheel-drive models feature a two-speed InstaTrac transfer case with push-button controls and an optional locking rear differential.

EPA fuel estimates stand at 18 mpg city/24 mpg highway for a four-cylinder regular cab, down to 16 mpg city/22 mpg highway on a 4WD crew cab with the inline-5 engine. The V8's fuel economy wasn't available at the time of this writing. Properly equipped, a V8-powered Colorado can tow up to 6,000 pounds.

The 2009 Chevrolet Colorado features a new braking system with standard antilock brakes. Traction control is also standard, as is the OnStar emergency communications system. Head-protecting side curtain airbags are optional.

In government frontal-impact crash tests, the Chevrolet Colorado crew cab earned a perfect five stars for the protection of the driver and front passenger. Other Colorados earned four stars in those tests. Side-impact testing resulted in four stars out of five for front-occupant protection, and five stars (without side curtain airbags) for rear passengers in crew-cab models. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety frontal-offset crash testing, the Colorado earns either a highest-possible "Good" rating (extended cab) or a second-best "Acceptable" (crew cab). Without the side curtain airbags, the Colorado earns a "Poor" rating for side-impact protection, the IIHS's lowest score.

The 2009 Chevrolet Colorado's inline four- and five-cylinder engines are reasonably smooth, though acceleration and hauling performance are lackluster compared to those offered by the larger V6s of competitors. A newly available V8 should fix this, but there's an obvious penalty in fuel economy. The four-speed automatic transmission doesn't offer as many gears as its rivals, but its shifts are smooth and well-timed. Chevy's small truck is relatively quiet around town, though wind and road noise increase at highway speeds. Either the Z71 or the ZQ8 suspension upgrade packages are worthy additions, depending on your trucking priorities.

While its competitors have gotten more luxurious and refined in recent years, the Chevy Colorado remains saddled with subpar materials, an abundance of hard plastic and mediocre seat comfort. The layout of controls and gauges gets high marks, however, for a simple and straightforward design. There's lots of room up front, though rear legroom is tight in both extended-cab and crew-cab models; rear entry/exit can also be awkward due to small rear door openings. A nice feature is a dual-position tailgate that can be secured when partially open to better support building materials resting on top of the wheelwells.

The Colorado's greatest strengths can be found in its chassis and powertrains. The body-on-frame chassis provides a rigid platform helping eliminate rattles and shake. You can feel it in the way the Colorado handles off-road and in the corners. Even over washboard roads, the Colorado exhibited no sign of dash-rattling or squeaks. Chevrolet has also created a number of performance and off-road packages that enhance the Colorado's rugged image. Surprisingly, for such a small truck, the Colorado has a rather wide turning circle. The standard in-line four-cylinder is fairly potent for such a small engine. When ordered with the manual transmission, it also offers exceptionally good fuel economy.

Tailgate The Colorado's rear tailgate can be set at a 55-degree angle so that items can rest flat on the tops of the wheel wells and align with the tailgate. Side-Curtain AirbagsOptional side-curtain airbags are a first for this segment.

The 2009 Chevrolet Colorado's interior layout is highly functional, with all the gauges and controls in clear sight and easy reach of the driver. The seats offer firm bottoms and good lumbar support, and the cloth fabric is both durable and comfortable. Crew Cab models are a bit tight when it comes to rear-seat legroom, but front seat occupants should be more than satisfied. The one drawback may be the over-abundance of gray throughout the cab. Chevrolet has revamped the interior color scheme to lessen this mass of gray plastic, but the most vivid improvements show up only in the pricier trim levels.

The Colorado definitely has the look that says "Chevy." Bulging fender flares and bright alloy wheels punctuate tall slab sides. Regular Cab models ride on a 111.3-inch wheelbase while Extended and Crew Cab models are on a 126.0-inch wheelbase. The bed length for the Regular and Extended Cab models is roughly six feet, while that for the Crew Cab model is about five feet. Both beds feature tall sidewalls, for deeper storage, which give the Colorado best-in-class cargo volume. The Colorado has a clever tailgate that can be opened flat or set at a 55-degree angle, effectively placing the top of the gate in line with the tops of the rear wheel wells, which makes it easy to load and carry, for example, large, flat panels.

The Colorado LS features a five-speed manual transmission, 2.9-liter four-cylinder engine, air conditioning, cruise control, anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control, tilt steering wheel, dual outside mirrors, automatic headlamps, carpeting, AM/FM stereo, XM Satellite Radio,, tachometer and forward-facing jump seats in the Extended Cab. The LT trim adds chrome front and rear bumpers, Deluxe Cloth upholstery, CD player and leather-wrapped steering wheel. To that the Z71 adds the Z71 off-road suspension, auto-dimming mirror, rear sliding window and the 3.7-liter five-cylinder engine.

Options include four-wheel drive, four-speed automatic transmission, power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, heated leather seats, automatic locking rear differential, tow package, 16, 17 and 18-inch wheel options, six-disc CD changer, side-curtain airbags, traction control, Z71 off-road package, the ZQ8 performance package (18-inch wheels, sport suspension and 5.3-liter V8 engine) and a Sun and Sound package that adds a six-disc CD changer and power sunroof.

Engine choices for the Colorado include four- and five-cylinder powerplants, as well as a V8 engine on the LT trims. The standard 2.9-liter four and the optional 3.7-liter five are both derivatives of the in-line six found in the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and GMC Envoy. Though the sizes of these engines might seem small, they are both big on power. The 2.9-liter four-cylinder produces an impressive 185 horsepower and offers up most of its 190 pound-feet of torque between the ranges of 1200 and 5600 rpm. That's enough power to muscle any lightly-equipped four-wheel-drive vehicle through the toughest terrain. The optional 3.7-liter engine makes 242 horsepower. Both of these engines produce class-leading horsepower while returning good fuel economy. The big 5.3-liter V8 is powerful but not easy on gas and is best ordered only when towing is a priority.2.9-liter in-line 4185 horsepower @ 5600 rpm190 lb.-ft. of torque @ 2800 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 18/24 (2WD, manual), 18/24 (2WD, automatic), 17/23 (4WD, manual), 17/23 (4WD, automatic)3.7-liter in-line 5242 horsepower @ 5600 rpm242 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4600 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/23 (2WD), 16/22 (4WD), 17/24 (2WD, Crew Cab), 16/21 (4WD, Crew Cab)5.3-liter V8300 horsepower @ 5200 rpm320 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4000 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 15/21 (2WD), 14/19 (4WD)

The Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the 2009 Chevrolet Colorado ranges from just over $ 17,000 for a LS Regular Cab to about $ 24,000 for a Crew Cab LT. A fully-loaded LT Crew Cab with four-wheel drive tops out at over $ 32,000, while the base Regular cab model can be loaded with options and still remain below $ 21,000. To help make your best deal, be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price. It shows the typical transaction price the Colorado is selling for in your area, a valuable piece of information when negotiating. As for resale potential, the Colorado falls far short of the values held by the Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier. Kelley Blue Book expects the Colorado to retain less-than-average residual values. However, the Colorado matches, and in some cases exceeds, the projected residual values of the Ford Ranger.

Chevrolet Colorado Overview and History

Chevrolet is the auto equivalent of a gene-boosted steroid-pumped feline. The ferocious cat was groomed by Swiss born racing driver Louis Chevrolet and business whiz Buick resurrector and former GM head William Durant, as a joint venture that started in 1910. Shortly after Durant was forced out of GM, he partnered with Chevrolet, whom he had previously employed at his Buick racing team, to regain the popularity he had lost.

The Chevy headquarters was set in Detroit and the newly formed brand was baptized, receiving its famous “bowtie” logo in 1913. There are several hypotheses as to how the logo design came to be, two of them being the closest to unanimous acceptance. One of the theories hints at the logo having been designed after a poster Durant had seen in a French hotel while the second claims the “bowtie” is actually a stylized representation of the Swiss flag cross.

No matter how it originated, the golden Chevy logo persisted. In fact, the brand grew at such a fast pace that it allowed Durant to regain ownership of GM in 1916. After having become wealthy enough, Durant bought a smashing 54.5 percent of GM's shares, reinstating himself as head of the auto empire.

Soon after the takeover, Chevrolet was absorbed into GM, becoming a separate division. Having gained even more strength after the merger, the newly formed entity was quick in starting off production and launched the model D in 1918. The V8 35 hp engines fitted on these cars were replaced by smaller 6 cylinder ones, that proved particularly successful on commercial vehicles. The engine gained reputation due to its high durability and earned the “cast iron wonder” nickname.

Only a few years later, Chevy revealed the SUV in its archaic form: the Suburban Carryall. Sporting rough terrain riding capabilities, seating for 8 and weighing around 1½ tons, it marked the beginning of Chevy's future SUV line-up.

The American producer continued its successful innovations streak by introducing the Powerglide transmission in 1950, becoming the first low-price competitor to equip its vehicles with automatic shifting. Shortly after the introduction of the fully automatic transmission, the legendary Corvette was born.

The Vette had such a good reception that it remained the longest running Chevy model in the brand's history, having also been the first American sports car to enter mass production. The Vette also premiered the usage of lightweight construction materials for the car's body, like plastic, at that time.

Following the acclaim garnered by the Vette's release, Chevy launched several other models, including the flashy Impala and the short lived air-cooled Corvair. During the 60's, Chevy reached its sales peak with 3 cars out of any 10 sold in the US. However, before such a performance was achieved, Chevy designed a new small-block V8 engine used to equip its '55 truck range.

This particular engine made it till today, going through plenty of modifications in the process ranging from lightweight, durable aluminum construction to ECU managed control and modern fuel injection for better dosage and increased power.

Although Chevy has been registering lower sales in the past few years due to uncontrolled brand extension, some of the “bowtie” emblazoned automobiles have become either cult classics or vintage collectibles, four wheeled icons as reminders of a past age of glory.

2009 Chevrolet Colorado Consumer Reviews

OK Truck
I missed not having a 4wd truck but I didn't miss the 14 mpg. So I got this Colorado. The mileage is OK, I have gotten 22 to 23 mpg on the highway. Around town in drops right off to 16- 17 mpg. I like the looks. It does ride a little rough , but it's a small 4wd with the off-road package, so that's expected.

What's Not To Like?
Sometimes the professional reviewers from Edmunds, Consumer Reports, etc are just too picky because my Colorado Z-71 has been a great truck! It has 24,XXX miles now. I have had ZERO problems with it! It gets about 24.5 mpg on highway and a combined 23 mpg recently with in town and highway driving. This little truck has been very reliable and the build quality that Edmunds pans is not seen on my truck. It is still rattle & squeek free and overall impression is that of a real solid truck. The only complaint, although it is not the truck's fault, is that the OEM M+S tires are noisier than I like. I will replace them for quieter ones when these wear out but they are wearing like iron!

Great Truck - 2WD, 4 cyl, crew cab
I test drove this truck with hesitation after reading the editors review. I tested the Colorado vs the Tacoma. The Chevy won in all categories, in my opinion, except interior design. Contrary to the editor review, this truck is quiet, comfortable and has plenty of power to get you moving and do light truck duty. The truck is not at all bouncy and rides like a car. Chevy added some nice touches to the package I bought like chrome door handles and really sharp looking chrome wheels. A similar Tacoma would cost much more. It braked much better than the Tacomas squishy brake petal and had more power. I never realized how much fun to drive a small 4 cyl truck could be, but it is.

09 Colorado with 5.3 V8
I have to disagree with the Edmund's reviewer on my vehicle. With the 5.3 liter V8, this truck is more like a sports car with lots of power. The ride is better than I expected from a truck and the interior, although not fancy, is nice. I passed up on a much more expensive "quality" truck with fewer features and less power due to GM incentives and great pricing. I'm very happy with my decision.

2007 Chevrolet Colorado Regular Cab
"Good, but consistently had problems"
I loved my truck. It went through three crazy drivers in my family before coming to me, went through a major accident and who knows how many fender benders. I always felt safe. This puppy kept me alive in a thirty foot drop into a cement wall and nothing broke on it! I am forever grateful for the quality of this vehicle keeping me safe. Also my truck has helped me move about 6 times in four years which is a huge plus as far as reasons to get this vehicle. My only complaint is that I had issues with the air conditioning going out twice in seven years, the fuel gauge and fuel pump broke and the nail in the coffin for my friend was when the engine began leaking into the intake valves. I am sad to say good bye, but it was a good vehicle. The only reason I gave a three on reliability is because when the fuel pump was having issues it caused the vehicle to have trouble starting consistently, but that was just my truck, I don;t know if that's a common problem for this vehicle or not. We had it for 12yrs and put 107,000 miles on it.

"Best truck"
It is the best truck I have ever owned. No problem with anything. Towed a bass boat without any problem at all. Good vehicle for all road conditions. Only had to replace 2 tires and I changed oil regularly.

2004 Chevrolet Colorado Regular Cab
"Excellent compact truck"
I am a big fan of this vehicle. I drive about 500 miles per week in all sorts of weather and this truck has never let me down. I bought a bumper off a guy who had a 4 cylinder Colorado like mine and his had 332,000 miles on it. My engine still purrs at 174,000. I have done maintenance as needed but have not needed any big repairs. Truck is very reliable and a tank in the snow. My street was not plowed during a snowstorm and my neighbor could not get up the street. I got behind him, put it in four-wheel-drive low, and I pushed him easily to the top of the street. The regular cab is surprisingly spacious. I gave 3 stars for comfort because I don’t have a lot of adjustability options on the seat, and I do have the base model so it’s very spartan. Less electronic parts to worry about though! I gave 3 stars for performance because it’ll never be mistaken for a sports car, but as far as performance based on being able to do what’s asked of it, as far as lug stuff around and blast through snow it is closer to a 5. I highly recommend this vehicle, and don’t let the miles discourage you.Read less
