It has the size, the features and the looks necessary to become the dominant truck in the compact class -- just don't mistake it for a midsize.
This replacement for the aged S-10 compact pickup will have a larger overall size and a new range of four- and five-cylinder engines derived from the 4.2-liter in-line six-cylinder currently sold in the TrailBlazer SUV. Expect standard, extended, and crew cab bodystyles and an interior that draws heavily from the General Motors corporate parts bin.

Chevrolet is the auto equivalent of a gene-boosted steroid-pumped feline. The ferocious cat was groomed by Swiss born racing driver Louis Chevrolet and business whiz Buick resurrector and former GM head William Durant, as a joint venture that started in 1910. Shortly after Durant was forced out of GM, he partnered with Chevrolet, whom he had previously employed at his Buick racing team, to regain the popularity he had lost.
The Chevy headquarters was set in Detroit and the newly formed brand was baptized, receiving its famous “bowtie” logo in 1913. There are several hypotheses as to how the logo design came to be, two of them being the closest to unanimous acceptance. One of the theories hints at the logo having been designed after a poster Durant had seen in a French hotel while the second claims the “bowtie” is actually a stylized representation of the Swiss flag cross.
No matter how it originated, the golden Chevy logo persisted. In fact, the brand grew at such a fast pace that it allowed Durant to regain ownership of GM in 1916. After having become wealthy enough, Durant bought a smashing 54.5 percent of GM's shares, reinstating himself as head of the auto empire.
Soon after the takeover, Chevrolet was absorbed into GM, becoming a separate division. Having gained even more strength after the merger, the newly formed entity was quick in starting off production and launched the model D in 1918. The V8 35 hp engines fitted on these cars were replaced by smaller 6 cylinder ones, that proved particularly successful on commercial vehicles. The engine gained reputation due to its high durability and earned the “cast iron wonder” nickname.
Only a few years later, Chevy revealed the SUV in its archaic form: the Suburban Carryall. Sporting rough terrain riding capabilities, seating for 8 and weighing around 1½ tons, it marked the beginning of Chevy's future SUV line-up.
The American producer continued its successful innovations streak by introducing the Powerglide transmission in 1950, becoming the first low-price competitor to equip its vehicles with automatic shifting. Shortly after the introduction of the fully automatic transmission, the legendary Corvette was born.
The Vette had such a good reception that it remained the longest running Chevy model in the brand's history, having also been the first American sports car to enter mass production. The Vette also premiered the usage of lightweight construction materials for the car's body, like plastic, at that time.
Following the acclaim garnered by the Vette's release, Chevy launched several other models, including the flashy Impala and the short lived air-cooled Corvair. During the 60's, Chevy reached its sales peak with 3 cars out of any 10 sold in the US. However, before such a performance was achieved, Chevy designed a new small-block V8 engine used to equip its '55 truck range.
This particular engine made it till today, going through plenty of modifications in the process ranging from lightweight, durable aluminum construction to ECU managed control and modern fuel injection for better dosage and increased power.
Although Chevy has been registering lower sales in the past few years due to uncontrolled brand extension, some of the “bowtie” emblazoned automobiles have become either cult classics or vintage collectibles, four wheeled icons as reminders of a past age of glory.

376,000 miles and still running perfect
My '04 Colorado Z71 crew cab has 376,000 as of yesterday and looks like it did when I got it except for the cracks in the windshield. The rear end wore out and had all the stuff inside it replaced at 360,000 for $ 1800.00. Engine does not use any oil I use Amsoil in the engine transmission and rear end. I am going to replace the tires soon this will be the 3rd set this set of tires has almost 160,000 miles on them. If you want to stop cupping on the inside of your front tires have them align the front tires straight up and down and keep air pressure about 40-42 pounds.

You get what you pay for.
Besides the archaic styling, I really love the truck (113k miles). For those that complain about the power/interior space; buy a full size. Plenty of pep for a compact truck. I've hauled a lot of weight in this girl and she doesn't mind it much. I bought the CO because the Dakota had a hungry V8, the Ranger is tiny and the Taco and Frontier were about 2k more, plain and simple. It drives like a small SUV; smooth and easy on the blacktop. With a decent pair of shoes it takes the KS mud and CO snow with ease. The mpgs are great for most pre gas hike vehicles, not just trucks, about 18 city at 6500 ft. If you need a layman's truck for the occasional moving day or trash haul, the Colorado is it

Great Truck
I bought my Chevy Colorado in 2004 with 3 miles on it and now 7 years later have 116XXX and climbing, I have driven my truck like I stole it since the day I bought it. I have added a few performance things to the engine but have never done any major overhauls yet. Main thing with these trucks is to do the maintenance as scheduled, and they do have problems with the blower motors but that is an easy fix.

great truck
I recomend the 3.5L. The 4 cylinder not
enough power.I'm getting 20 miles per
gallon local driving.Great handling,
tight suspension. In my opinion, after
looking at fords and Chevys, this is
the best truck in its class for the
money.

"Good, but consistently had problems"
I loved my truck. It went through three crazy drivers in my family before coming to me, went through a major accident and who knows how many fender benders. I always felt safe. This puppy kept me alive in a thirty foot drop into a cement wall and nothing broke on it! I am forever grateful for the quality of this vehicle keeping me safe. Also my truck has helped me move about 6 times in four years which is a huge plus as far as reasons to get this vehicle. My only complaint is that I had issues with the air conditioning going out twice in seven years, the fuel gauge and fuel pump broke and the nail in the coffin for my friend was when the engine began leaking into the intake valves. I am sad to say good bye, but it was a good vehicle. The only reason I gave a three on reliability is because when the fuel pump was having issues it caused the vehicle to have trouble starting consistently, but that was just my truck, I don;t know if that's a common problem for this vehicle or not. We had it for 12yrs and put 107,000 miles on it.

2008 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab
"Best truck"
It is the best truck I have ever owned. No problem with anything. Towed a bass boat without any problem at all. Good vehicle for all road conditions. Only had to replace 2 tires and I changed oil regularly.

2004 Chevrolet Colorado Regular Cab
"Excellent compact truck"
I am a big fan of this vehicle. I drive about 500 miles per week in all sorts of weather and this truck has never let me down. I bought a bumper off a guy who had a 4 cylinder Colorado like mine and his had 332,000 miles on it. My engine still purrs at 174,000. I have done maintenance as needed but have not needed any big repairs. Truck is very reliable and a tank in the snow. My street was not plowed during a snowstorm and my neighbor could not get up the street. I got behind him, put it in four-wheel-drive low, and I pushed him easily to the top of the street. The regular cab is surprisingly spacious. I gave 3 stars for comfort because I don’t have a lot of adjustability options on the seat, and I do have the base model so it’s very spartan. Less electronic parts to worry about though! I gave 3 stars for performance because it’ll never be mistaken for a sports car, but as far as performance based on being able to do what’s asked of it, as far as lug stuff around and blast through snow it is closer to a 5.
I highly recommend this vehicle, and don’t let the miles discourage you.Read less
Have 2000 s10 4wd 3 door stepside, bought for $ 1000, been driving for 4 years, engine still feels new, no issues with the transmission. Have traveled completely cross country in it. It never let me down. I keep easing along I can see it easily reaching 300,000. *****
