Versatile and affordable, the 2007 Toyota Matrix is still one of the best compact wagons in its price class for hauling people and cargo.

Based on the Corolla platform, the 2007 Toyota Matrix aims to combine the interior functionality and flexibility of a small SUV with the driving characteristics of a sporty compact car. It's part of a growing list of sporty and affordable four-door hatchbacks/wagons like the Chevrolet HHR, Chrysler PT Cruiser, Dodge Caliber and Mazda 3 hatchback.

On the outside, the Toyota Matrix has a more angular front fascia, including its own grille, headlights and taillights. And while the Corolla has a traditional, smooth-bodied profile, the Matrix benefits from a little more style, with an S-shaped character line that breaks up what would otherwise be a rather boxy side.

The Matrix stands tall -- 5 inches taller than the Corolla -- which gives the cabin a spacious feel. This also allows it to accommodate adults comfortably in the backseat. For carrying cargo, the Matrix features a durable plastic cargo floor with built-in tracks and adjustable tie-down points. What's more, both the rear seats and the front passenger seat fold perfectly flat to allow owners to transport items up to 8 feet in length.

We're convinced that the 2007 Toyota Matrix would be a satisfying choice for many people. It rides comfortably, handles decently and has plenty of room in the rear for friends, children or cargo. True, it's not as sporty or as fun as the Mazda 3 (especially with this year's discontinuation of the sporty XRS trim), but it is one of the best small wagons in its class in terms of value, build quality and features. Alternately, if you like slightly more American styling, opt for the Pontiac Vibe, as it shares much of the Matrix's mechanicals but has a distinct Pontiac look.

The 2007 Toyota Matrix compact wagon is available in two trim levels: base and XR. Base-level cars have the necessities such as air-conditioning and a CD player, but most of the worthwhile features are optional. Go with the XR to get standard power locks and windows, keyless entry, a 115-volt power outlet and a rear wiper. Options depending on trim level include 16- or 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, an all-weather package, a moonroof and a JBL premium sound system with CD changer. There's also a special Matrix M-Theory package for the XR. Available with the Speedway Blue exterior paint only, it includes special 17-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, a front strut tower brace and four-wheel disc brakes.

The Toyota Matrix comes with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. The engine makes 126 horsepower and 122 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard and a four-speed automatic is optional. EPA estimates Matrix fuel economy at 30 city/36 highway for cars equipped with a manual and 29 city/34 highway for cars with an automatic transmission.

ABS is optional on all 2007 Toyota Matrix wagons. The M-Theory adds four-wheel disc brakes; otherwise, the Matrix comes with rear drums. Seat-mounted side airbags for front occupants and full-length side curtain airbags are optional across the line. Stability control is another worthwhile option, but it's offered only on the XR and only with an automatic transmission. In NHTSA crash testing, the Toyota Matrix earned five stars (the best score possible) for driver protection in frontal impacts and four stars for the front passenger. For side impacts, a Matrix without side airbags received three stars for front-passenger protection and four stars for rear-passenger protection.

Despite Toyota's claims, the Matrix isn't particularly sporty. Acceleration is only average, but the manual transmission cars do give a little extra snap. Handling, too, is modest but should be fine for most customers who are looking for a maneuverable suburban runabout as opposed to a serious sport wagon. The Matrix's ride quality is smooth and comfortable, making it a fine choice for commutes and road trips.

The 2007 Toyota Matrix offers an attractive interior design with a simple control layout. Most materials are of solid quality, and fit and finish is typically above average for this class. The driving position can be a bit awkward for taller drivers, but the rear seat is roomy and comfortable and even adults will be content to ride in back. In terms of cargo-carrying ability, the Matrix is similar to a small SUV. The rear hatch opens upward, and the rear glass can be raised independently. The main cargo area and rear seatbacks are unapologetically coated in hard plastic, the idea being that it's a lot easier to clean dirt and mud off one long expanse of plastic than out of matted carpet. A special cargo-floor track features eight adjustable tie-down hooks. Underneath the floor is a hidden storage compartment. The 60/40-split rear seats can be folded flat, thereby expanding cargo room to 53.2 cubic feet. The front passenger seat also folds forward, allowing items more than 8 feet long to be carried with the tailgate closed.

The competent 1.8-liter engine can move the Matrix with ease, though you will have to keep the revs high in the rpm band to get the most of the engine's power. The standard five-speed manual transmission is the most helpful for this task, though you can opt for the four-speed automatic if you're not enamored with rowing your own gears. The Matrix's precise steering feel makes it easy to get around curves with confidence, and the firm suspension displays good cornering ability without a punishing ride. Interior sound levels are higher than one might expect, but not annoyingly so. Besides, we suspect most younger drivers will never hear the din over the optional JBL Audio system.

115-Volt OutletThe 115-volt outlet on the XR's dash should be standard in every car.JBL Audio w/ Kicker Sub WooferIf you like your music loud and your bass thumping, this system is sure to please.

Look inside the Matrix and you'll find a detailed interior that blends black cloth, chrome trim rings and brushed aluminum into pure automotive art. Gauges are housed in four deeply-recessed binnacles that are constantly backlit in a deep red glow. You'll find the Matrix's seating to be firm and comfortable, with a height-adjustable driver's seat on the XR trim. The roomy rear seat sits up high, affording passengers more legroom as well as a good view forward. When not loaded with passengers, the Matrix's seats can be folded flat to create a rather roomy 53 cubic feet of cargo area. Laptop junkies will love the two-prong 115-volt outlet standard on the XR.

The Matrix is based on the Corolla platform and shares its chassis and powertrain with the Pontiac Vibe. The Matrix is a bit more futuristic in appearance than the Vibe, with flared ground effects panels, sweptback headlamps and a narrow rear window. The sweeping rear beltline makes for narrow rear side windows that can hinder a driver's ability to see small objects that may be close to the rear wheels. The large hatchback makes it easy to load the cargo hold and, on the XR trim level, includes a rear wiper/washer. A number of aftermarket parts, both from Toyota and external suppliers, make it easy to customize the Matrix without having to spend a small fortune.

The Matrix includes a 126-horsepower engine, five-speed manual transmission, air conditioning, rear defroster, front and rear cup holders, illuminated entry, dual remote control mirrors, AM/FM stereo with CD, tilt wheel, tachometer, cargo cover and full wheel covers. The XR adds power mirrors, 115-volt outlet, power windows, power locks, remote keyless entry and a rear wiper/washer.

Options include cruise control, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), front side-impact airbags, power glass moonroof, four-speed automatic transmission, auto-dimming rearview mirror, alarm, rear wiper/washer, anti-lock brakes (ABS), JBL audio and a number of dealer installed security and protection packages.

The high-reving four-cylinder is peppy and fuel-efficient - exactly what most buyers are looking for. Although not big on torque, the 1.8-liter can move the Matrix with ease, so long as the car is not loaded with passengers or climbing steep hills.1.8-liter in-line 4126 horsepower @ 6000 rpm 122 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4200 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 30/36 (manual), 29/34 (automatic)

The Matrix has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 15,880 with the five-speed manual and $ 16,680 with the four-speed automatic. The sporty XR model is $ 17,360 with the manual and $ 18,140 with the automatic. A look at the Fair Purchase Price shows the typical transaction price paid for the Matrix in your area, so be sure to check it out before you begin negotiations. The Matrix may not cost much, but it's worth its weight in gold when it comes to resale, holding better than 64 percent of its value at 24 months and close to 50 percent at 48 months.

Toyota Matrix Overview and History

Toyota Matrix is a 5-door hatchback manufactured by Toyota and especially addressed to the North American market.
Toyota Jidosha Kabushiki-gaisha or Toyota for short is actually the largest car maker in the entire world, bigger than Ford, GM and anyone else. Their history, like many other car producers, starts with some other product, in this case automatic looms. At some point, in 1933, Kiichiro Toyoda, son to Toyota's founder, decided he wanted to build cars and so he took a trip to Europe to get an idea about gas-powered engines.
The government encouraged such a bold decision mostly because making their own cars would be cheaper and they also needed vehicles for the war with China. Just a year after its foundation in 1933, the Toyota Motor Company created its first engine, the Type A, placed in the Model A1 passenger car and the G1 truck.

During WWII, Toyota was committed to making trucks for the army and only the premature ending of the conflict saved the company's factories in Aichi from a scheduled Allied bomb raid. After the war, Toyota resumed car making but found more success in building trucks and buses than with cars. Still, it didn't give up on cars for good and in 1947 it came up with the Model SA, also known as the Toyopet, a name which later was applied to other models as well.

A little more successful was the Model SF which also had a taxi version but the same 27 horsepower engine as its predecessor. A more powerful model, the RH, which had 48 HP came out shortly after. Production went up rather fast and by 1955, Toyota was turning out 8400 cars a year. That year, Toyota diversified their production, adding the Jeep-like Land Cruiser and the luxury sedan, the Crown.

With numbers growing and with several models under their belt, Toyota now had its eyes set on the international market. The first dealership outside Japan was in America in 1957 an the first plant in Brazil in 1959. An interesting strategy from Toyota ensured that all models were somehow unique to the region where they were produced (they were adapted to the respective market).

The big break for Toyota on the American market came with the 70s when rising gas prices forced local producers to make smaller cars. These were thought of as entry-level and as a consequence lacked in quality of finishings. In contrast, Toyota already had several fuel-efficient models that were also of better quality. The Corolla is the best example in this sense, soon becoming America's favorite compact car.

But as far as the luxury market went, Toyota still had trouble with selling the Crown and the Cressida. At the dawn of the 80s, the entire luxury market in America was entering a downwards slope, with all the other manufacturers finding it difficult to keep up sales, and that's when Toyota came up with Lexus, a new company that would make luxury cars.

By the beginning of the 90s, Toyota vehicles became synonymous with reliability and low-cost maintenance which made them very popular all over the world. A bid for winning over the younger audience was made with the launch of models like the MR2 and the Celica.

Presently, Toyota is at the forefront of the environmental battle, with its successful hybrid model, the Toyota Prius and now announcing a plug-in electric car that will be called Toyota Plug-in HV, which will run on standard electricity powered by a lithium-ion battery pack.

2007 Toyota Matrix Consumer Reviews

What a great car!
I have two kids, and this car fits my family perfectly. Cavernous? No, but plenty large for a family of four and everything that travels with it. I love the comfortable seats, the high seating position, the interior space (headroom in particular) and the incredible gas mileage. You won't find a better value in this price range, all things considered.

Love My Matrix
I have been driving my Matrix for over eight years. It is a fun little car to drive and is very comfortable and roomy for a small car. There have been very few problems with the car and is very economical to drive. I don't know why they stopped making the car. I would buy another one in a minute if available

6 years and going strong!
I needed a reliable car and definitely found one in the matrix. Have owned it for 6+ years and never spent much money on it, except for maintenance every 6 months or so (oil, tire rotation). It's not a sports car, kinda slow, but it takes you from A to B without worries and at a low cost. I get about 28mi/Gal overall. Love that I can flatten all the seats and fir big stuff in the car. Very satisfied with my purchase, and now that it's paid off, couldn't be happier!

5 speed Matrix
The Matrix is a Corolla wagon and is very similar to the Dodge Vibe. It has been a fun car to drive. What it lacks in power it makes up for in gas mileage. The interior of the hatch-back trunk is plastic so things can easily slide around. There are nets but we bought a mat that has helped to keep things from sliding around.

2003 Toyota Matrix
"fantastic value"
This car is outstanding--a pocket rocket. RPM limit is 8200, one of the highest in production cars. It comes "on the cams" at about 5500!! Six speed manual, top speed in the mid-120's. Excellent storage, front passenger seat folds flat. We've carried a full dining room set it in, and (separately) a 300 pound generator. Totally Toyota reliable. Too bad they stopped production of it.

2005 Toyota Matrix
"Over 200k miles and still going"
This is the second Toyota I've put over 200k miles on. The first was an '87 fx16 carolla, the second is an '05 matrix XR. Its been driven in all types of weather, including ice and snow, and temps above 100F. I've never had a garage, so the clear coat is gone on the roof, but the engine is as responsive as it was the day I bought it, still gets 30 mpg and the AC runs super cold. I've never needed anything more then regular maintenance on it and a new alternator when I hit 200k. I plan on keeping it until it costs more to keep it running then it's worth. Then, I will buy another toyota!
