Though the 2007 Saturn Relay features a slick interior and distinctive styling, it doesn't have the on-road finesse, in-cabin conveniences or top-notch safety ratings of its minivan competitors.

One of GM's minivans that attempts to look more like a rugged SUV than a bland family shuttle, the 2007 Saturn Relay shares the ups and downs of its brethren. Marketed as a crossover sport van, the Relay has a longish nose, aggressive front fascia and a roof rack to give the impression of an SUV, while the basic body architecture remains that of a minivan, meaning a space-efficient box. To our eyes, it still looks more like a minivan with a big snout, but there's no arguing that it has a more distinct style than the average snub-nosed people mover.

More upscale than the typical Saturn, the Relay has a number of attractive family-friendly features, such as a split-fold third-row seat and a 40-gigabyte "PhatNoise" digital media system that allows owners to store and play thousands of MP3s and/or several dozen movies. Notably missing on the spec sheet, however, are three-row side curtain airbags and a rear backup camera. Saturn did decide to make stability control standard equipment this year, however. It has also dropped the smaller V6 engine and made last year's optional 3.9-liter, 240-horsepower V6 standard across the board, meaning that the Relay now packs as much standard horsepower as segment leaders such as the Honda Odyssey and Nissan Quest.

We give Saturn credit for making improvements to its minivan, but the reality is that it still doesn't match the top dogs when it comes to overall driving dynamics, luxury and safety features. True, the 2007 Saturn Relay is a decent choice for family transportation, and if price is an issue (as it typically is in this class), one could probably get the minivan for at least a few thousand dollars less than the comparably equipped class leaders. More demanding buyers who don't mind spending the extra bucks, however, will likely be happier with the aforementioned rivals or the Hyundai Entourage/Kia Sedona twins.

The 2007 Saturn Relay minivan comes in three trim levels, named simply 1, 2 and 3. The Relay 1 has air-conditioning, full power accessories, an eight-speaker sound system with an MP3-capable CD player and the OnStar communications system. Upgrading to the Relay 2 adds cruise control, keyless entry, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, deep-tinted side and rear glass, an interchangeable overhead console (that allows one to arrange storage compartments as needed), heated mirrors and a rear wiper. The top-of-the-line Relay 3 adds dual-zone climate control, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, rear air-conditioning, a power driver seat, alloy wheels, a 115-volt AC outlet, power rear vent windows, power-sliding passenger side door, second-row captain's chairs, alloy wheels and upgraded storage.

Major options include the PhatNoise 40GB digital media system, a remote vehicle startup system, dual power-sliding side doors, rear park assist, satellite radio, a navigation system, leather seating and a sport-tuned suspension. Depending on the trim level, most of these options are available either à la carte or bundled with other features as part of various packages.

All Saturn Relays are front-wheel drive, as the all-wheel-drive version has been dropped, and all come with a 3.9-liter V6 with 240 hp and 240 pound-feet of torque matched to a four-speed automatic transmission.

Antilock disc brakes, stability control and traction control are all standard. Side-impact airbags for first- and second-row occupants are optional, but there's no protection for passengers seated in the third row. In NHTSA frontal crash testing, the 2007 Saturn Relay scored five stars (the highest possible rating) for the driver and front passenger. In side-impact tests, the Relay earned four stars for protection of front occupants and five stars for the rear occupants. During IIHS crash testing, the Relay scored a rating of "Good" (the highest of four) in frontal-offset testing. In that agency's side-impact test, however, the van received a "Marginal" (the second lowest of four) rating even with the side airbag option and a "Poor" (the lowest) when tested without them. (Most of the newer minivans on the market are rated "Good" in the IIHS side-impact test.)

The stout V6 offers brisk performance around town and when merging and passing on freeways. The Relay's suspension is on the soft side, yielding a plush ride and average handling for this class. Upgrading to the optional sport suspension does provide tighter handling, though maneuverability in tight spaces is still compromised by the van's large turning radius. Braking capability is average for the class.

The Saturn Relay seats seven, and the fold-flat third-row seat offers a 50/50 split. A pleasing two-tone color scheme with faux wood accents dramatically brightens the cabin and lends an upscale ambience. Folding center trays (with cupholders) between the first- and second-row seats are available. An overhead rail system provides rear-seat access to climate and entertainment functions, and can be outfitted with various storage containers. Springing for the PhatNoise digital media system saves you the hassle of juggling DVDs on road trips, while an optional remote vehicle start system makes it easy to warm up the van on cold mornings.

The Relay's 240-horsepower 3.9-liter V6 pulls strongly off the line and provides the low-end torque needed for passing and merging. The engine is smooth and silent, even at full throttle. The front-wheel-drive layout works well for this type of vehicle, providing good traction in rain and snow. Steering and braking have been greatly improved over the old Venture, Silhouette and Montana minivans on which the Relay is based. The smaller size and narrow footprint make the Relay feel easier to maneuver than the larger competitors from Nissan, Chrysler and Honda.

Classy InteriorThe elegant dash and door panel designs truly make the Relay feel special inside.Optional Remote StartThe optional remote start lets you start the vehicle from as far away as 500 feet.

If all GM vehicles took their interior styling cues from the Relay team, the company would never hear another complaint about interior design and quality. French-stitched seams on the door panels and seats, a handsome dash and instrument cluster design and a hefty dose of sound-deadening insulation make life with the Relay anything but mundane.

The Relay's long hood and added C-pillar are intended to make it look like an SUV. The sliding side doors betray the Relay's minivan origins, but overall the look is quite appealing. Saturn's grille, headlamp and wheel treatment are simple yet somewhat elegant and, in our opinion, work best with this shared GM platform.

The Relay 1 includes front air conditioning, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes (ABS), StabiliTrak stability control, traction control, power locks, power windows, dual sliding side doors, automatic headlamp control, AM/FM stereo with CD and MP3, tilt wheel and full wheel covers. The Relay 2 adds a rear defroster, rear air conditioning, overhead rail system, DVD entertainment, keyless entry, dual heated power mirrors, cruise control, rear wiper/washer and 17-inch wheels. The Relay 3 adds rear air conditioning, alarm system, garage door opener, second row captain's chair seating, six-way power driver's seat, front side-impact airbags and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with touch controls.

Options include remote start, automatic level control, sport suspension, PhatNoise entertainment system, power sliding side doors, second-row side-impact airbags (Relay 3), heated leather seats and a Trailering Package.

The standard 3.9-liter engine features variable valve timing, which helps improve torque at low speeds and fuel economy when cruising at higher speeds. Compared to the previous 3.5-liter engine, the new V6 is quieter, more refined and helps the Relay achieve horsepower and torque figures near the segment's class leaders.3.9-liter V6240 horsepower @ 5600 rpm240 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4400 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 18/25

The Relay 1 has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 22,210, while the Relay 2 is $ 24,415 and the Relay 3 is $ 28,500. A look at the Fair Purchase Price shows the typical transaction price being paid for the Relay in your area, so be sure to check it out before you begin negotiations. The Relay is projected to retain average residual values, better than the Kia Sedona, on par with the Ford Freestar and Dodge Grand Caravan, but well below the Honda Odyssey, Nissan Quest and Toyota Sienna.

Saturn Relay Overview and History

Introduced in 2004 and assembled in Doraville, Georgia, Saturn Relay was the predecessor of Saturn Outlook rolled out by the parent company in 2007.
During the 70s, GM, the quintessential American car brand, began having troubles with sales as the oil crisis gained in intensity. Their big gas-guzzling engines were no match for European and Asian imports and as a result the company's image suffered. To fight this, GM launched a new brand of cars, Saturn Motors, on January 7, 1985. The name was taken from the Saturn rocket, the one that carried the astronauts to the moon in the 60s.

An interesting fact is represented by the number who started out this company: 99 people from all backgrounds: design, production, marketing etc. known from that day on as “the 99”. OK, they started out as 100, but one of them dropped early on hence the 99.

Production of Saturn cars began in the early 90s and the purpose from the get-go was to emulate foreign marketing strategies such as the Japanese ones in order to put up a fight on the American market. Such strategies included better quality control which translated into better reliability of the finished product and more control for the workers in the plant.

Soon after the first cars hit the streets of America, favorable reviews start pouring in. Sales go well as Saturn cars start earning one award after another. In 1993, Saturn reported it's first profitable year and everything seemed to be going well for the small GM-owned brand. By 1995 they had made their first million cars. A unique feature on Saturn cars in the beginning were dent-proof body panels (Z-Body) but after 2000, they were slowly put out of production.

Also after 2000 GM starting taking a more active interest in Saturn as a company and interfered with its line-up and general policies. Today, most models in the Saturn line-up are copied after Opel cars, just like Vauxhalls are in the UK.

Starting with 2003, sales for Saturns began to dwindle which forced GM to retire several models like the L- series and the Ion. Latest reports say that GM is now looking to sell or even shut down Saturn in order to alleviate the financial pressure it's under at the moment.

Saturn Relay
This is by far the roomiest and best handling minivan I have owned. I've owned a Toyota Sienna and Nissan Quest in the past. The price was much less than that of other makes but had more options and standard features. I would definitely recommend this minivan.

2005 Saturn Relay
"Best Saturn We've Ever Owned"
We told our Saturn dealer years ago that we'd try a Minivan when they built one. We knew it was in the GM pipeline because of the Chevy Venture in their Minivan line. Traded a '98 Plymouth Grand Voyager in on it. Saturn turned out to be better, even though GVW was higher and size of vehicle slightly larger, as I remember. Only performance downside is that cruise control downshifts to climb hill on way home with Relay and the Voyager didn't (3.0 liter vs 3.8 liter). Gas mileage (for me) much better. I get over 20+ around town, and had one leg of a road trip with High Average Speed where my MPG was 28.3 with an avg speed of 64.5 mph! (100% gasoline, though, not ethanol blend). As a whole, family has liked Saturns, and wish GM hadn't dropped the Badge. One absolute downside is the way that the wheel sensors go out, have replaced 2 lefts and 1 right, with 55,000 miles on it. Another fail was that about 7.5 years in, the rear seat DVD-Entertainment center has electronic dementia. Turns on by itself, randomly, and will not play CD's or DVD's now.
