With its sporty handling, smooth ride and roomy, luxurious cabin, the 2007 Cadillac SRX is one of our top choices for a midsize luxury crossover SUV.

A member of that genre of SUVs known as "crossovers" (car-based as opposed to truck-based utes), the 2007 Cadillac SRX offers most of the features people want in an SUV, such as a roomy cabin, an elevated driving position and a sure-footed demeanor on slippery roads, but without the clumsy driving dynamics typically associated with traditional SUVs. Based on the platform used for the CTS luxury sport sedan, the SRX shares its sibling's sharp-edged styling and precise handling.

Previously praised for its athletic performance and accommodating cabin but derided for its subpar interior design and materials, the 2007 SRX sees a big improvement this year in the latter area. The whole cabin has been revamped, with a more cohesive and upscale look to the dash, center stack and door panels. Higher-quality materials are used and handsome wood accents (optional on the base trim) abound.

On the move, the SRX impresses with its outstanding handling and brisk acceleration. A choice of V6 or V8 power is available, both potent engines that are matched to smooth and quick-witted automatic transmissions. A Cadillac-worthy ride on the highway rounds out the SRX's impressive performance portfolio.

Offering more practicality than many competitors -- a third-row seat is available in the SRX, but not in the Mercedes-Benz ML-Class, Infiniti FX series or Lexus RX 350 -- along with polished performance and an interior befitting a luxury marque, the 2007 Cadillac SRX is a most compelling choice in the midsize luxury SUV segment. The only other vehicles you might want to consider before making a purchase are the redesigned Acura MDX and BMW X5 and the Volvo XC90, which are also highly regarded in this segment.

The 2007 Cadillac SRX is a midsize luxury SUV offered in two trim levels. Those trims are defined by what's under the hood: V6 or V8. The V6 includes 17-inch alloy wheels, leather seating, OnStar telematics, a Bose audio system with CD player and XM satellite radio, dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, full power features and rear park assist. Step up to the V8 and in addition to the bigger engine you'll get 18-inch alloys, xenon HID headlights, a tire-pressure monitor, heated front seats, power-adjustable pedals, real wood accents, a power front-passenger seat and a six-disc CD changer. Most of the V8's features are optional on the V6. Major options for both models include a Magnetic Ride Control suspension, a third-row seat, a separate rear air-conditioning system, an extra-large "UltraView" sunroof, a DVD rear entertainment system, surround-sound audio and a navigation system. A new addition this year is the Sport Package, which adds larger 18- or 20-inch wheels, unique fascias and a limited-slip differential.

Two engines see duty in the SRX. The 3.6-liter V6 makes 255 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque, while the 4.6-liter V8 generates 320 hp and 315 lb-ft. Either way, an automatic transmission that offers a sport mode and manual shifting is fitted: a five-speed unit in the V6 and a six-speed unit in the V8. There is also a choice of rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Even with the V6, performance is more than adequate, while the V8 furnishes a solid kick of power at any speed.

Antilock disc brakes (with a panic assist feature), stability control and a full complement of airbags (including front-seat side as well as side curtain for the first two rows) are all standard. In NHTSA crash tests, the SRX scored four out of five stars for driver and front-passenger protection in frontal impacts. Side-impact tests resulted in a perfect five-star rating for front and rear passengers. In IIHS frontal-offset crash tests, the Caddy scored "Good," the highest rating possible.

With the optional Magnetic Ride Control adaptive suspension, handling is outstanding, as the body feels tight and responsive around turns, giving the SRX a tossable feel on par with the BMW X5 and Infiniti's FX crossover. At the same time, the highway ride is smooth and comfortable, just the way most crossover SUV buyers want. The response and feel of both the steering and brakes are impressive as well. A very well-rounded package, the 2007 Cadillac SRX is a top choice for those wanting a bit of extra on-road excitement from their SUV.

Inside, the 2007 Cadillac SRX provides comfortable accommodations, with an attractive design theme that incorporates a "V" shape on the seats, center stack and even the bottom of the analog clock. The genuine wood trim that's standard on the V8 and optional on the V6 steps up the luxury factor considerably, with generous fillets adorning the doors and instrument panel. Materials quality is significantly improved over past years, though there are still a few surfaces that seem out of place in a $ 40K vehicle. The optional UltraView sunroof spans both front rows, allowing nearly all passengers to experience open-air driving. There's plenty of room in the second row, though occupants of the optional power third-row seat may feel somewhat cramped. That third seat folds flat into the floor, yielding 32 cubic feet of capacity behind the second-row seats. Fold down the second-row, too, and there are 70 cubes available.

On the open road, the SRX glides serenely without veer or vagueness. Some SUV suspensions tremble at the first sign of an S-curve, but not that of the SRX, which negotiates corners without giving the impression it has a high center of gravity, even when loaded down with people and cargo. The steering feel is light at first, but quickly firms up as the speed rises. The SRX's steering is precise, with dead-on straight-line tracking and confident predictability when turning into corners. On the whole, the SRX easily rivals the handling characteristics of the Volvo XC90 and may be just slightly short of matching the BMW X5. When fitted with the V6, the SRX's acceleration feels strong but without the same sense of urgency provided by the V8.

Huge MoonroofThe optional UltraView moon roof is composed of a huge glass panel that covers a five-foot section of the roof, effectively exposing the first and second rows to the sun.Unobtrusive DVD ScreenThe SRX's optional DVD entertainment screen is mounted on the back of the center console, not the roof, allowing the vehicle to be fitted with both the DVD system and the UltraView moonroof.

The SRX's interior is similar to that found in the Cadillac CTS. The seats are firm and supportive and the new dash is straightforward, with softer edges and simplified audio and ventilation controls. The center touch-screen operates the audio and climate controls, as well as the optional navigation system. The second-row seat offers the most legroom in its class, and the improved step-over makes entry and exit easier than in previous models. The optional power-folding third-row seat folds flush to create a level cargo hold.

The SRX is a sharp-looking vehicle. Since the SRX is not quite fully an SUV and not quite a station wagon, it might fit into the same category as the Chrysler Pacifica if it were not so loaded with luxury features and a big V8 engine. The SRX's short front and rear overhangs make it relatively easy to park and maneuver in tight spots, and a thoughtful standard feature is the power-operated rear liftgate.

Standard equipment for the two-wheel-drive models includes dual-zone air conditioning, front side-impact airbags, front and rear side-curtain airbags, leather seats, Ultrasonic Rear Park Assist, power rear liftgate, Bose audio, StabiliTrak, leather-covered tilt wheel with touch controls and cast aluminum wheels. The V8 model adds a six-disc in-dash CD changer, four-wheel disc brakes, 18-inch wheels, eight-way power passenger seat with power lumbar support, limited-slip rear differential and Magnetic Ride Control.

Popular options include a new 5.1 Bose Surround Sound audio package, a Sport Package that adds a body-colored grille with V-Series mesh insert, 20-inch wheels and tires, a limited-slip rear differential and all-wheel drive. Other options include the UltraView power moonroof, power adjustable foot pedals, DVD navigation, third-row power folding rear seat and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system.

The V6 engine has its pros and cons. While powerful enough to move a loaded SRX around town, it lags somewhat when you need a quick launch or speedy passing maneuver. On the other hand, its fuel economy is slightly better than the more potent V8, a point that may become more relevant as fuel costs continue to rise.3.6-liter V6 255 horsepower @ 6500 rpm254 lb.-ft. of torque @ 2800 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 16/23 (2WD), 15/22 (AWD)4.6-liter V8320 horsepower @ 6400 rpm315 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4400 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 15/21 (2WD), 15/20 (AWD)

The two-wheel-drive V6 SRX has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 37,665. Adding all-wheel drive bumps the price to around $ 39,500. The SRX V8 is $ 43,870, and with all-wheel drive it's about $ 45,500. A look at Fair Purchase Price will show the typical transaction price being paid for the SRX in your area, so be sure to check it out before you begin negotiations. As for resale, owners can expect the SRX to hold its value well. In projected 24-, 36-, 48- and 60-month resale values, the SRX bests the Mercedes-Benz ML-Class and is within a few percentage points of the Acura MDX, Lexus GX and BMW X5.

2007 Cadillac SRX Future Generations

Cadillac SRX Overview and History

Based on GM's acclaimed Sigma architecture and available in rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD), SRX is designed to deliver superior driving dynamics.
Cadillac's history can be traced back to the beginning of the 18th century. Although coaches, horse riding or walking were the favorite means of locomotion during those times and no cars had been yet made, it's important to trace the brand to its origins. The genesis of Cadillac as it is widely known today began in 1701, when a group of French explorers led by Le Sieur Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac traveled to the northern parts of the US and established Ville d'Etroit. The settling would ultimately come to be known as Detroit, a flourishing industrial city, teeming with car plants and foundries.

However, Sir Cadillac would not have any connection to the future of the Cadillac car workshops. Its actual beginnings can be traced to the mid 19th century, when a boy named Henry Martyn Leland was born. Leland grew up on a farm near Barton, Vermont, where he received a solid working-education that taught him the importance of doing a job properly, regardless of its importance.

The farm-training he received, combined with his penchant for improving working methods, led to his growth as an engineer. However, Cadillac would not yet emerge as an automobile brand. By 1890, Leland had founded his own company in partnership with Robert C. Faulconer and Norton, after having convinced the former of the city's need for machine shops. The company's area of expertise was gear grinding and the development of special tools.

Soon after the company received general credit for the quality of the products it marketed and Leland had asserted himself as a talented engineer, the shift from steam-powered vehicles to gasoline-powered ones was made. Following the work of the visionary Daimler and Benz in Europe, a man named Ransom Eli Olds from Michigan teamed up with a group of investors under a firm called Olds Gasoline Engine Works. Their main objective was to  build a gasoline-powered engine to be fitted on the chassis of a vehicle.

The project was a success but the resulting product was flawed: the gears in the transmission were too loud. Olds turned to Leland and Faulconer for help. The two entered a straight competition against the Dodge brothers who were also supplying engines for Olds. Although Leland's ultimately developed 10.25 Hp engine was better than that of Dodge, Olds turned it down due to the high car sales his company registered at the time. Basically, there was no need for a new engine.

Still, Leland's engine would soon come to use. Shortly after Olds' refusal of using the newly designed engine, Leland was looked up by two men concerning the liquidation of a company that had previously built cars. Its name was the Detroit Automobile Company and had been initially reorganized by Henry Ford, who left shortly after the company began crumbling again. Leland persuaded the investors to stay in business, convincing them of the utility and importance of the automobile industry in the near future.

With an engine already designed, Leland and Faulconer were brought in and the company adopted the name of Cadillac, that of the explorer that had founded the city over two centuries ago. The Cadillac coat of arms was adopted as the company's new logo and the baby-firm would still receive international recognition for its automobiles.

Leland's engines had already garnered appreciation and were some of the most accurately built units of the time. In fact, not only the engines were reliable and built with pinpoint precision, but they were also highly versatile, successfully catering for the need of interchangeability. This feature has earned Cadillac the Dewer Trophy, being the first time when such an award was handed to an American automobile manufacturer.

Later on, Cadillac would be part of a larger entity, the General Motors company, then run by William Crapo Durant - who paid $ 4.5M in cash for Leland's company to merge with GM. From that point on, several models would be developed and enter production by Leland's departure in 1917.

The Brougham, Fleetwood, Deville and the Eldorado are some of the most famous models build by the GM's prodigious branch. Its accomplishments vary from speed breaking records on American territory to engineering improvements that were a premiere for the automotive world. For example, Cadillac introduced the revolutionary electrical lighting and ignition Delco system as standard equipment on their cars, as well as boasting the world's first independent front suspension on its entire line of automobiles in 1934.

Closed cooling systems, electronic injection systems and catalytic converters are also among the long list of first-to-have-done things introduced by Cadillac in the US. Despite the low reception of the brand in Europe, Cadillac remains one of the great classics overseas, still boasting a privileged status among American car producers. After all, it's a brand deeply rooted in nobility grounds.

V6 4dr SUV (3.6L 6cyl 5A)
My first used car
Always bought new before but this 10 year old SRX looks and feels almost new. Nicest car I've ever owned: most comfortable and most features. The only disappointment is the ride - a little truck like on anything other than smooth pavement. Now I know why I never had a Cadillac before: I can't afford the repairs. Only about 115,000 miles on the car and the alternator had to be replaced. Also, the battery, because it ran down too low more than once as the alternator was failing. Then the transmission failed and had to be replaced. SO, now I'll have this car forever because it isn't worth how much I've put into it on repairs. At least it gets better MPG than the van it replaced, and it's not our primary vehicle. UPDATE; I've now had this car for 1 year and I'm really pleased with it. Such a nice, comfortsble car. And it easily tows my 3000 pound boat. I use the Tow/Haul feature because it might avoid transmission damage, but it doesn't seem necessary and it increases fuel consumption by staying in lower gears longer. MOst of my towing is less than 20 miles and mostly on flat terrain. UPDATE: I guess it's been about 18 months that I've owned this car. Still really like it for the comfort, convenience and better MPG. No more repairs.!

More than just transportation
I ordered the new V8 Sport SRX with 20-inch wheels and took delivery 11/15/06. This Cadillac has everything I wanted in a new vehicle: great looks; smooth, powerful acceleration; comfortable ride; and attractive, well appointed interior with many driver convenience features. Since my car is also my part-time office, I wanted a vehicle in which I could enjoy time spent in it. Now I prefer my moving office to my stationary one! The Cadillac SRX is much more than just transportation.

V6 4dr SUV (3.6L 6cyl 5A)
For a old car it runs pretty good me.
Not that great on gas, especially city, then again I brought a Cadillac, I've had this car about month now, it had 149,999 miles on it when I purchased it, my wife thought I was crazy, but I did my homework. I ran it through AutoCheck ( 25.00 ) came up clean, NO Accidents, Title check out, Odometer was true, vehicle used, and much more came back clean 91%. Ran it through Car Facts, which show the car was completely serviced 120,000 miles, which included brakes, plugs, filters all around, rear end, and all electric components, and sunroof by the dealership. As I explain to my wife we really starting off with a 30,000 miles vehicle just without the warranty, and only paid $ 7,000. I will still keep you posted as time goes on, and she still keep the crazy in reserve. As everybody else we started off with the tires curse. Front driver tire had to have a Sensor replaced, driver rear tire had two slow leaks, had to have that fixed, and really that it so far. Will keep you posted.

First time truck owner
I picked up my new '07 SRX on 10/28/06 and it is a very nice ride. I ordered one with the 5.1 surround sound and DVD player. The ride is controlled and very quiet with power to spare. The 6-speed automatic transmission seems to be better on gas than my '06 XLR with same 320 horses and the five speed automatic.

"Best year I ever owed was the 2008 and 2009 Srx"
This vehicle is special. It was the 3 year transformation to the 2010 and they made the first in 04. The o4-06 was ok at the time it was new. But the 07 08 09 is some of the best experiences I've had in maybe any car ever. Just a one of a kind interior. Everything was done better then these late models. Best srx I ever owned was my 08. Drove it to 140,000 miles in 4 years and regular maintenance it gave us no problems and all the extras work unlike the previous 04-06. My favorite car ever

"Not even worth it."
Bought my SRX at 128000 miles and had transmission issues from the start. 1k miles later had to drop 800 for a tune up and fix a miss fire issue. The automatic lift gate stopped working. Headlight assembly shorted out and had to be replaced. Finally at 175k miles it started to leak oil bad and i got rid of it. Although i did enjoy the interior space and features like the big leather seats and dvd player.

"Too expensive for junk"
Too many repairs. The last straw, for me, was when I was told the engines in these cars are junk and mine had a blown head gasket.
