It costs more than it should, but among midsize luxury sedans and wagons, the 2007 BMW 5 Series is by far the most satisfying to drive.

First introduced to the U.S. in 1975, the BMW 5 Series has never wavered in its mission as a midsize car that functions equally well as a luxury liner and a performance machine. As such, it has long been the benchmark by which other premium sport sedans and wagons are measured. The first 5 Series sedan was powered by an inline six-cylinder engine, a tradition that continues to the current day, as the 2007 BMW 5 Series offers a pair of refined and potent inline sixes as well. Of course you can also get a V8. Until 2005, all 5 Series sedans and wagons sold in the U.S. were rear-wheel drive; BMW added all-wheel-drive (AWD) versions to the lineup for 2006. In fact, the 5 Series wagon is now available only with AWD.

Last redesigned for the 2004 model year, the BMW 5 Series has more radical styling than any of the four preceding generations, along with an impressive arsenal of technology. BMW's Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system is standard as always. Like other stability control systems, DSC uses steering angle and yaw rate sensors to help you avoid skids, but what you might not realize is how many other subtle functions it incorporates, including a brake fade compensation feature (hydraulic pressure is automatically increased as brake temperature rises), a brake standby feature (which automatically snugs the brake pads against the rotors when the driver lifts off the throttle abruptly) and a brake drying feature (which periodically touches the pads to the rotors to remove any moisture when the windshield wipers are in use). On models with AWD, DSC teams up with the xDrive system to improve traction and balance on slippery surfaces. Whenever DSC takes corrective braking action on a single wheel, xDrive automatically redirects torque to the wheel opposite it. This means the car can keep moving even if only one wheel has traction.

Besides all that, 5 Series buyers can opt for Active Roll Stabilization (part of the Sport package), which uses adaptive shocks to reduce body roll when rounding a corner, and Active Front Steering, which adjusts both the steering ratio and the amount of power assist for optimum feel and control under varying driving conditions. Inside the cockpit of every 5 Series, the iDrive vehicle management system links all the climate, audio and navigation functions through a central screen operated by a console-mounted dial that works much like a computer's mouse. Although simple climate and audio adjustments can be made without using iDrive, more complex operations are often buried under layers of on-screen menus. Don't expect to master iDrive unless you're willing to sit down with the owner's manual.

The almost endless array of technology and polarizing sheet metal may distinguish the current-generation BMW 5 Series in the minds of consumers, but in the end, it's the Bimmer's continued status as a true driver's car that will make the sale. Many competitors rival it for luxury and technological sophistication, but none can match the BMW's level of driver involvement. High pricing is the only thing that prevents us from giving the 2007 BMW 5 Series a hands-down recommendation.

The 2007 BMW 5 Series sedan comes in 525i, 525xi, 530i, 530xi and 550i models. The wagon is available in 530xi trim only. Standard equipment includes automatic climate control, a CD player, one-touch power windows, rain-sensing windshield wipers and heated mirrors. Ten-way power front seats are also standard, with 20-way power seats available as a package option. Leatherette upholstery is standard on all models except the 550i, which gets standard leather. The iDrive vehicle management system is integrated into all 5 Series models, while a DVD-based navigation system with voice command and adaptive cruise control are optional. On the audio side, buyers can get a glovebox-mounted CD/DVD changer as well as a premium-grade Harman Kardon Logic 7 sound system. Other options to consider include adaptive bi-xenon headlights, a night-vision system, Active Front Steering (AFS), and a sport package with various wheel/run-flat tire upgrades (up to 18 inches in diameter), Active Roll Stabilization and firmer suspension tuning.

Entry-level 525 models come with a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder that generates 215 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. Midlevel 530 models get an upgraded version of this engine that develops 255 hp and 220 lb-ft of torque. The top-of-the-line 550i sedan features a 4.8-liter V8 rated at 360 hp and 360 lb-ft of torque. All models get a six-speed manual standard, with a six-speed Steptronic automatic as an option. The rear-drive 530i and 550i can also be had with BMW's sequential manual gearbox (SMG), a sophisticated transmission that combines the control of a manual with the ease of an automatic. BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system is available on 525 and 530 sedans, and standard on the wagon. Note that the wagon also comes with a self-leveling rear suspension to help balance the heavier cargo loads it's apt to carry.

Standard safety equipment includes Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and four-wheel disc brakes with electronic brake proportioning, cornering and stability enhancements. The airbag array incorporates a head protection system and torso-protecting side-impact airbags for the front seats. Rear-seat side airbags are optional and, due to safety concerns, you must specifically request that your dealer activate the bags if you order this option. Active front head restraints and Advanced Safety Electronics (ASE) that govern the deployment of safety systems are also optional. Both Hill-Start Assist and Hill Descent Control are standard on AWD models, in case your extra-steep driveway ever gets slippery. A flat-tire monitor is standard on all 5 Series cars and run-flat tires are available. The 5 Series was named a "Best Pick" in IIHS frontal offset crash testing.

The 2007 BMW 5 Series is an extremely balanced machine that can handle aggressive driving maneuvers on winding back roads as well as it does weekday commutes on crumbling expressways. The optional active steering system hasn't dulled BMW's trademark steering feel, though driving purists will prefer the standard setup. Likewise, the standard suspension tuning gives the 5 Series plenty of capability in the corners. The base inline six offers adequate power, while the 255-hp version offers the best compromise between performance and economy. Equipping the 5 Series with the V8 turns it into a seriously fast sedan that will outpace many sports cars.

The driver-oriented 5 Series cockpit greets passengers with a classy if austere show of luxury. Build and materials quality is outstanding, but some competitors' interiors are warmer and more inviting. The multifunction iDrive interface integrates the audio, climate and navigation systems. Basic functions can be accomplished without going through iDrive, but more complex tasks require drivers to wade through too many menus. Supportive seating is provided in both the front and rear, and even adults won't mind sitting in the backseat. The sedan has 14 cubic feet of trunk capacity, while the wagon has a 34-cubic-foot cargo bay behind its rear seats along with standard roof rails.

Even in base form, the 550i is a driver's delight, thanks in great measure to its potent V8 and the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) that integrates its computer-controlled stability enhancement with traction control and anti-lock brakes (ABS). Our test car also had two key options: Active Steering and the Sport Package. The former varies the steering ratio in a way that makes the vehicle easier to maneuver in close confines while helping it feel more stable when cruising at higher speeds. The latter - which includes BMW's Active Suspension, Active Roll Stabilization and 18-inch run-flat tires - imparts an overtly sporty feel to the 550i - although some owners may find the more supple feel of the base suspension more to their liking.

Xenon Adaptive Headlamps Optional on lesser 5 Series models but standard on the 550i, these ultrabright illuminators shine with an intense blue-white beam, that closely approximates natural daylight, and also turn with the steering wheel to help you see further ahead into a corner. Optional Multi-Contour SeatsWhile the standard 10-way power front buckets deserve kudos for comfort and support, the optional 20-way multi-contour units with articulated backrests, variable side and thigh bolsters and four-way lumbar support raise the long-distance travel experience to an entirely new level.

Elegantly understated, the 550i's cabin is trimmed in Dakota premium leather and poplar or maple wood keyed to black, grey, auburn or tan color motifs. Front-seat occupants enjoy comfortable and supportive 10-way power front buckets while the spacious rear quarters offer a split-folding rear bench with sufficient room to accommodate two full-size adults or a trio of kids. Highly-legible analog gauges provide basic information on vehicle speed, engine revs and fuel level, but the centerpiece of the dash is a color LCD screen connected to the love-it-or-hate-it iDrive integrated input system that uses a central rotator knob to control everything from the audio and air conditioning to the optional navigation and adjustable suspension systems.

Visually, the latest 5 Series stands in stark contrast to BMWs of the past, with subtle corners and simple lines giving way to sharp-creased edges and cat's-eye headlight lenses that, with the 550i, house corner-following active bi-xenon lamps. Several heritage details remain, such as the twin-kidney grille and dogleg kink in the C-pillar. But with its bustle-back trunk and sculpted side panels, the 550i has definitely moved to new design territory.

Heading the 550i's long list of standard equipment is premium leather upholstery and wood interior trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, 10-way power seats with power lumbar support, a power tilt/telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel with touch controls, iDrive multifunction integrated controller, 10-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system, keyless remote entry and a power moonroof. Functional touches include the comprehensive Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system that also integrates the 550i's traction control and advanced anti-lock brakes (ABS), bi-xenon adaptive headlamps, dual heated power mirrors with a "look-down" feature that helps in parallel parking, Park Distance Control and fog lamps. Front and front-side airbags are complemented by BMW's front and rear side-curtain head protection airbag system.

Extras for the 550i include either BMW's six-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) or the STEPTRONIC automatic transmission at no additional charge, a voice-activated navigation system, distance-maintaining "active" cruise control, Head-up Display, speed-sensitive Active Steering, rear side-impact airbags, keyless entry and start, 20-way power multi-contour seats and SIRIUS Satellite Radio. Key group upgrades include the Sport Package (sport suspension, Active Roll Stabilization, 20-way multi-contour seats and 18-inch run-flat performance tires), Premium Sound Package (LOGIC7 Surround Sound audio with glovebox-mounted six-disc CD changer) and the Cold Weather Package (heated front seats and steering wheel and a high-pressure headlight cleaning system.

The 550i shares its 4.8-liter DOHC V8 with the larger 7 Series sedan. Making a smooth 360 horsepower and 360 pound-feet of torque, this free-revving engine is fortified with BMW's Valvetronic variable intake valve lift and Double VANOS variable intake/exhaust valve timing, advanced technologies that help to quicken its throttle response and enhance overall fuel efficiency. BMW claims zero to 60-mph times of around 5.5 seconds, either with the standard six-speed manual transmission, the six-speed Tiptronic automatic or the racing-style, six-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG). 4.8-liter V8360 horsepower @ 6300 rpm360 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3400 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/24 (manual), 16/22 (SMG), 17/25 (automatic)

The BMW 550i has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 60,485. Currently, the 550i is selling for that full amount, but prices that represent prices consumers are actually paying at any given time can differ substantially, so click on the prices to compare. Though some competitors, such as the Acura RL, Audi A6, Cadillac STS and Infiniti M45, cost less, the BMW 5 Series is generally regarded as the best value in its segment. As a long-term investment, the BMW 550i is the acknowledged leader, clearly outstripping its historic rival, the Mercedes-Benz E550, and earning the Kelley Blue Book 2007 "Best Resale Value Award" in the Luxury category.

BMW 5 Series Overview and History

Contrary to some opinions, BMW does not stand for Best Motors in the World company. Sure, BMW-branded automobiles are regarded as being some of the few engineering forms close to perfection, but the letters stand for something less boisterous and more good-natured: Bayerische Motoren Werke or Bavarian Motor Works.

The secret to their success does not lie in precise astrological predictions or mischievous and blatant employ of corporate espionage, but rather in a dedication to quality and constant pursuit of excellence. Unlike most of the auto manufacturers out there, BMW hasn't focused on a vehicle as a whole but started from its primary source of power, the engine, which has been perfected by generations of engineers over a close-to-a-century time span. The 'cardio-approach' BMW took resulted into obscenely efficient performance-happy engines that literally rocketed the company formed by Karl Friedrich Rapp in October 1913 straight to the sky.

Rapp's company, 'Rapp-Motorenwerke' - that would later become BMW - focused mainly on aircraft engines due to the large demand at the time, fueled by the imminence of Wold War I. Despite the need for aircraft engines, Rapp failed to sale his powerplants due to a reliability flaw caused by unwanted engine vibrations. However, his neighbor Gustav Otto, who was also the owner of an aircraft engine plant, enjoyed a great deal of success.

Struggles to keep 'Rapp-Motorwerke' afloat failed and, by 1916, Karl Rapp resigned under the weight of the financial difficulties that had been pressing against the factory's lungs for a few years. As in the case of other car brands, such as Bentley or Aston Martin, expected and highly predicable 'Hollywoodian' rescuers came along and fended off the threats. Austrian triumvirate formed by new company owners Franz-Josef Popp and financier Camillo Castiglioni relaunched the Motoren Werke by persuading Gustav Otto into a merger that would prove mutually beneficial. Thus, the 'Bayerische Flugzeug-Werke' or BFW was formed.

Shortly after the new entity was born, its name turned into the murmur of what would later become a shout-out for quality automobiles: BMW. By the time the 20's came with the Charleston and its afferent bizarre fashion sense, BMW had already developed a range of highly-appreciated airplane engines that had garnered tons of acclaim - especially after the 1918-improved Type IIIA engine successfully powered a biplane to the impressive height of 16,404 feet in a mere 29 minutes.

The beginning of the 20's also happily slapped BMW with its still unchanged to this day logo, mimicking the motion of a white propeller on a sky-blue background. While enjoying the heights of an appreciated and sought for brand, BMW was brutally pulled back to earthy existence once the World War was over. The Treaty of Versailles prohibited BMW from continuing its activity and the company switched to manufacturing air brakes for railway cars.

Forced by the Versailles-imposed conditions, the company found itself searching for other alternatives and soon enough came to focus on developing motorcycle engines. Over a two-year period of time (from 1920 to 1922), BMW built two motorcycle models, the Victoria and the Flink. Their success was consequently marked by the building of the first BMW factory, that would further kick the brand to new heights.

Although BMW motorcycles encountered sales problems due to defective suspension, the company still managed to hold a constant leading position in aeronautical engineering. By 1927 the company was the proud  holder of just over one third of the aviation records of those time, with an astonishing 29 out of an overall 87. Two-wheeled vehicles quickly turned into four-wheeled ones in 1928, when the Austin license-built Dixi 3/15 rolled out the factory doors.

Only one year later, BMW made the headlines once again, this time by setting a new motorcycle-speed record through their Ernst Henne ridden 750 cc bike, that reached the speed of 134.65 mph (216.75 km/h).

Swinging from breaking world records to engineering innovations, BMW hit the bull's eye once more in 1932, with the launch of their new car model, the 3/20 PS. The 782 cc 4 cylinder powered car was the first one independently produced by BMW. Shortly after the waves of acclaim generated by the new machine, the company announces its next model, the 303 saloon, that would bring a persistent trait in all future BMW engine configurations: the 6 cylinder one.

Only years after the launch of the 303 in 1933, BMW continued its world record breaking streak, at the same time with the beginning of a new chapter in its cylinder-powered existence: the development of the company's first roadster, the 328 model (1936), and a row of motor sport wins over the following two years.

As time passed by, BMW got bigger and bigger and, shortly before the Wold War II outbreak, took over some more factories in the vicinity of Berlin. More motor sport wins were to follow, with Baron Fritz Huschke von Kanstein winning the Mille Miglia race in 1940s.

Needless to mention, war necessities threw the company into military equipment production policies once more. Despite the lengthy world conflict, BMW developed some of its greatest pieces of machinery, such as the R57 Wehrmacht military motorcycle, as well as the 109-300 jet engine which was one of the first jet engines in the world to enter mass production.

After recovering from the 1944 bombings that heavily damaged their plant in Munich, BMW received permission to repair Allied army motorized equipment at their plant in Allach. Due to BMW's versatility and need for mechanized faming implements and spare parts, the first BMW bicycle was born. Soon after the genesis of the leg-powered two-wheeled vehicle, BMW received a hard blow from the US army, that had ordered the dismantling of the Munich and Allach plants.

After a 5-year absence from the Germany industry, BMW returned in style. Crossing the ocean all the way to New York, BMW debuted their first motorcycle in almost 2 decades - following their last one at the beginning of the 40's. More success awaited in the line for BMW, as their R68 motorcycle model developed in the 50's quickly became a standard-setter among international motorcycle manufacturers. Meanwhile a previous model, the  R67/2, reached the 100,000 threshold in 1953.

BMW receives further acclaims in the years to come, as it establishes itself as an engineering force to be reckoned with. The 1955 Isetta, powered by a 12/13 hp motorcycle engine, becomes a favorite among customers. The result? Over 160,000 units are sold, transforming the Isetta into a symbol of the post-war decade.

Besides coming up with newer models and bending technological improvements on their cars, BMW also held a privileged position among race winners around the world. After the development of the 507 and 600 models, BMW unleashed a shout of childish joy, grabbing an impressive win in the 1958 Austrian GP, through Ernst Hiller.

With the help of Herbert Quandt, BMW, still a share-owned company, is brought one step closer to independence. Exterior offers of selling or fusion were turned down despite the enormous profits such a transaction would have led to. The 700 model entered the production lines, together with the R69, BMW's top motorcycle line-up model.

The 60's brought a multitude of achievements with the 1500 and 1600 series, as well as a range of new sedans, the 2500, 2800, American Bavaria and the 2.5 CS and 2800 CS coupe models. BMW proved once more that it hasn't left its king-of-the-hill-of-racing spot, as Austrian racing driver Dieter Quester scored several victories in the Formula Two series (as well as a triple European touring car champion title in 1968, 1969 and 1977).

However, BMW did not stop there. After having bestowed a great deal of mechanics magic upon the world, the company resumed its entertainment through development and unveiled the 2002 Turbo model in 1973. Following the success of its earlier aircraft engine, the 2002 Turbo is one of the first ever turbos to enter mass-production.

Production lines that would become worldwide pieces of success soon came out, such as the 6 and 7 series and the recently reconstructed BMW M1 model. By the end of the 70's, BMW had dug deep into other car-improvement related fields as well, and electronics proved to be the perfect ground for growing BMW's next generation of computerized car devices. Economic fuel research then became top priority. Not only the company was quick in adapting to the fast-moving tendencies of those times, but it also became a steady and reliable supplier of armored cars for different private and public clients.

Racing never lost its fans, consequently BMW never lost enthusiasm in racing. The 80's marked (finally) BMW's involvement in Formula One racing. It was in 1983 that BMW was handed its first title in the series, with Brazilian driver Nelson Piquet becoming king of the Formula One World Racing Championship. At the same time, the 5 series entered a new enhancement stage and was gifted the 518i engine and the powerful M535i. 'M' set a new standard in power and stamina. The M5 and M3 models launched in 1985 and 1986 consequently joined the pinnacle of engineering accuracy and true power and beauty among sports cars enthusiasts.

Research started to be heavily reinforced and reached new uncharted areas through the employment of over 6,000 people. Once the Z1 one came along, the profits kept pile-up trend. Caring for the customer and staying ahead of competition was proof enough that BMW had turned into a true, mature brand. Expansion was inevitable and much like a Big Bang, BMW spreads across the world and inaugurated a new car plant in the US, namely in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The models that were in production at the time slowly received touring versions, which helped BMW cover an even larger slice of the market.

BMW would later reveal the Z8, a successor of the 507, who later made it to the movies. The world wasn't enough and so were BMW's achievements in their own vision. Since 1999, they have been constantly delivering performance vehicles or 'motorized attire' for their wealthy customers out there. Racing has remained a pleasurable and profitable hobby for the German marque, which emerged victorious in three consecutive FIA WTCC seasons from 2005 to 2007. Only recently, BMW engineers and designers paid homage to the M1 through a modern day replica of the sharp-angled 70's original. Sadly enough, the M1 will not be revived through mass production.

2007 BMW 525xi
This car is unique and I cannot describe how you feel when you drive it. You must own one and drive it on a regular basis to understand.

Sublime
Great car bought it from a friend who upgraded to the M5 with the SmG. Has all options except heads up display. She now misses her 550i and I love it. Acceleration is smooth but stupidly fast. Can do 120 and not even break a sweat. Fuel economy is around 17 for city, but 27 for highway doing 80. Impressive. Love the interior, 20 way comfort are great. Idrive is useful I think older people just get confused with new technology (I'm 24). Can be finicky at times however. The styling works for the car depending on the color. Mines black with tan interior so it looks understated and all business. Keep making excuses to go drive somewhere. Car is so much fun.

New to BMW
After much research I made the plunge and bought a low mileage 530i. My observations: Ride: the car has a great tight ride. Either you like it or you don't - I love it. iDrive: reviews of idrive nearly caused me to buy another car. If you expect to get in and drive off and immediately operate idrive, you will likely be frustrated. If you will read the manual while sitting in your driveway for 20 minutes, it is not much different than Windows and a mouse. I'm 57 and computer literate. Climate control was the only part of idrive I did not master (without needing to look) in 24 hours. Fuel economy from FL to GA was an amazing 31 mpg @ 75-80 mph. I love the car.

No help from BMW
About 18 months ago we bought two Certified Pre-owned 2007 BMW 530i, automatic, from Vista BMW in south Florida. One gray and the other one (mine) in black. The gray one still have an excellent paint but as you see in the pix below my black car paint is fading. I've seen another 5 series black car with the same problem and another 7 series as well. One friend who works for BMW dealer told me that BMW knows about the problem but they don't want to admit it so they don't loose money on a recall. BMW North America and Vista refused to fix the paint on it. I've been looking around for paint shops and got some quotations ranging from $ 800 to $ 4000 for fixing it.

2004 BMW 5 Series
"Deserves 5 stars except........."
Owned 2004 325 and 530. AC takes several minutes to get cold air flowing. Apparently other owners have same issue. Halogen angel eye lights get so hot the insulation on the connecting wiring gets brittle and crumbles when installing a new bulb. Headlights must be removed for repair. Otherwise this is a 5 star BMW.

2009 BMW 5 Series
"A car for comfort, fun, reliability, & road power"
I am only the second, local owner. It has been serviced regularly. It has been garaged by its owners. It had 59 000 miles on it when I bought it. Clean Carfax with small scratches on the car. No major mechanical or electrical problems. It drives just like a BMW - the ultimate driving machine. Gray with light, leather interior, the interior and exterior are in very good condition. Let me tell you I am a car enthusiast. This car is awesome. It has 50-50 front and rear weight balance. Don't compare this car with 3 series. 5 series is real premium. It has great turns. to be honest not perfect like a Quattro but still very very good. Unfortunately mine does not have rear cam or parking sensor which is a shame. It has been 8 months. Everything is so smooth. Like most of the high performance German cars, it has oil consumption issue. That is okay since I only added 1 quart in 8 months. Be careful before buying this car about oil consumption because it is pricy to change the gasket. I had only one minor issue with leaking windshield pump. I replaced it myself, cost around 10 dollars. Mine has 3.O liter patrol engine which is known to be more reliable than V8 or M5. As far as I know, e60 M5 is the least reliable M5 till now. So be careful if you are willing to buy e60 M5 or V8. They will most probably have more mechanical issues like water pump, oil leakage, fuel pump... One more thing. I am living in south but I am pretty sure its winter performance is horrible even if you have winter tires.

"PERFORMANCE GREAT!"
FOR MY CAR BEING 14 YEARS OLD I STILL GET A LOT OF COMPLIMENTS ON IT'S STYLING , ITS STILL FAST FOR IT'S TECH FROM THAT ERA. JUST HAVE TO KEEP IT SERVICE AND DON'T SLACK WHEN THAT SERVICE LIGHT COMES ON.
