The Audi A4 is comfortable, sporty, and surefooted on slippery roads. With a price tag a few grand less than a comparably equipped BMW 3 Series, it's a smart choice.

Introduced in the mid-1990s, the Audi A4 was the vehicle responsible for kicking the company out of its late '80s and early '90s funk. With its classy styling, comfortable ride, well-weighted steering and buttoned-down suspension, that first A4 attracted a whole new fan base for Audi. More than a decade later, the latest A4 (now in its third generation) is still taking up the point position. The 2007 Audi A4 may be the company's entry-level luxury car, but it doesn't give much away except space to its larger siblings. A stylish cabin boasting fine fit and finish is one evident Audi trait, and the A4 upholds this tradition. But there's more to the A4 than just a nice interior. Thanks to its available quattro all-wheel-drive system, the A4 is capable of providing both enhanced traction on slippery roads and better road-holding on dry pavement. Additionally, Audi has fitted the car with two impressive direct-injection engines: a powerful yet relatively frugal turbocharged 2.0-liter engine called the 2.0T, and a sweet-sounding 3.2-liter V6.The major news for the 2007 A4 is a full update for the Cabriolet body style. For the past couple of years, it was a bit behind in terms of receiving the latest mechanical A4 hardware. This year, the 1.8-liter turbo four and 3.0-liter V6 are gone and replaced with the 2.0T and 3.2. Other updates for the Cab include new exterior styling, a revised suspension design and a new, quieter convertible top.Aimed chiefly at BMW's 3 Series, the 2007 Audi A4 isn't quite as involving a drive as that benchmark sport sedan from Bavaria. The Audi also faces solid competition from the Lexus IS and the Volvo S40. But with a price tag thousands less than the Bimmer, a richer cabin than any of them, a wider choice of body styles and a well-rounded personality, the Audi A4 is a mandatory consideration for those shopping in the sport-oriented entry-level luxury car market.

The 2007 Audi A4 is available in a full spectrum of body styles including sedan, convertible (Cabriolet) and wagon (Avant). The names of the two trim levels indicate which engine is employed: 2.0T and 3.2. The 2.0T's standard features include 16-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power driver seat, an in-dash six-CD changer and, for convertibles, an automatic top. The 3.2 adds 17-inch wheels, leather seating (with a power front-passenger seat) and real wood cabin accents.

For those wanting more, Audi offers three main option packages. The S line Package includes sport suspension tuning, 18-inch wheels with 235/40 performance tires, unique front and rear fascias and aluminum cabin accents. The Premium Package (available for the 2.0T) includes a glass sunroof, leather seating and 17-inch wheels. The Convenience Package includes a HomeLink transmitter, rain-sensing wipers, a power passenger seat, adaptive bi-xenon headlights, a trip computer and auto-dimming mirrors. Stand-alone options include Sirius satellite radio (which includes a Bose premium sound upgrade), a navigation system, power rear and manual side sunshades, rear parking sensors, and various wood and metallic cabin accents.

A pair of feisty engines sees duty in the Audi A4. The A4 2.0T comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four, good for 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque, while the A4 3.2 has a 3.2-liter V6 with 255 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque. Direct-injection technology for both engines means crisp, linear response. The 2.0T is a little light on torque down low, but once the tach sees 2,500 rpm, there's plenty of pull on tap. It's also pretty frugal, with an EPA highway mileage estimate that's more than 30 mpg. All wagons come with Audi's quattro all-wheel drive as standard, while the sedans and Cabriolets can be had in either front-wheel-drive or quattro guise. Buyers who choose an A4 quattro can have either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, while front-drive A4s (except for the 2.0T sedan) come only with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) that functions like a regular automatic but has no fixed gear ratios.

Virtually every modern safety feature, including stability control, antilock brakes (with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist), front seat-mounted side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags (except on Cabriolets) comes standard on the A4. Rear seat-mounted side airbags and a tire-pressure monitor are optional. In NHTSA crash tests, the A4 scored four stars out of five in frontal crashes, while side impact testing garnered five stars for front occupants and four stars for rear occupants. In IIHS crash testing, the A4 received the highest score possible of "Good" in both the frontal-offset and side-impact categories.

The 2007 Audi A4 is one of the most balanced cars in the entry-luxury segment in terms of ride and handling. It's comfortable in day-to-day driving, as the suspension soaks up most bumps and potholes. A4s equipped with the "S line" sport package provide expanded handling capabilities with less body roll and more outright grip. While the A4 still isn't as razor-sharp as the BMW 3 Series, the extra foul-weather traction afforded by the quattro all-wheel-drive system could justify the trade-off for many drivers.

Artfully designed and furnished with high-quality materials, the A4's cabin impresses immediately and continues to do so even after one has had the car for awhile. The seats may seem too firm for some folks, but they prove supportive and comfortable on long trips. Most controls are fairly intuitive, though the navigation system, like that of most German cars, takes some acclimatization. The new Cabriolet features an optional "Acoustic Top" that has more sound insulation than the prior soft top and thus promises a quieter ride, especially at freeway speeds. Maximum cargo capacity stands at 13.4 cubic feet for the sedan, while for the wagon, it's 27.8 cubes with the rear seats up and 60.6 cubes with those seats folded down.

We drove the six-speed automatic and six-speed manual versions of the A4, each with the four-cylinder turbo engine and quattro all-wheel drive. While the automatic model was a joy on the highway - delivering a quiet, comfortable ride - inspiring stability and plenty of power to pass, the transmission magnified the engine's turbo lag in the stop-and-go of city driving. The manual car, on the other hand, was equally impressive on the highway while also providing more of the kick we expect from a sports sedan. When sunny skies turn to rainy weather the all-weather traction advantages of the renowned quattro all-wheel-drive system are much appreciated and, even in dry weather, we could feel its calming influence while negotiating curving on-ramps and the like.

One-Touch WindowsEven when we expect a vehicle to have four one-touch up/down windows, we're still delighted with their ease and convenience. They make life a little easier.Wonderful InteriorWith clean designs, high-quality materials and top-notch construction, the A4's interior is a nice place to explore.

The A4's rear seat can be tight on legroom for some, and the front armrest can interfere with the parking brake lever. Beyond these, we find the A4's comfortable, stylish and well-crafted cabin nearly without fault. The textured aluminum is one of the finest examples of interior metal trim we've ever seen, and every surface and seam is pleasing to both the eye and the touch. If you're looking for a nice place to spend a commute, you won't have to look beyond the A4.

From the side, it wouldn't be hard to mistake the new A4 for the last-generation car (model year 2002 to 2005). And if your vision isn't what it used to be, you might be excused for confusing the two from the rear. But only from a mile away, on a moonless night in the middle of the Black Forest could you mistake the two models from the front. At first, we thought the Audi family's new trapezoidal big-mouth grille looked even less graceful on the A4 than when we first saw it on the more substantial A6 and A8. But, like its big brothers, the new A4 seems to embrace its new identity a little more warmly every time we see it.

The base A4 powertrain includes a four-cylinder turbo engine, six-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive. In addition, the well-equipped entry A4 features an AM/FM stereo with in-dash six-disc CD changer, one-touch up/down windows, keyless entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, cloth seats, leather-wrapped wheel/shifter/handbrake, power driver's seat, four-way adjustable/multifunction steering wheel, cruise control, fog lights and 16-inch cast alloy wheels. Standard safety equipment includes a sophisticated anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic stability control, active front head restraints and front, front-side and two-row head-curtain airbags.

In addition to an impressive list of standard features, the A4 also features a long list of options, including a choice between leather and premium leather seating, DVD-based navigation, premium sound system, heated front and rear seats, driver position memory, power passenger seat, glass moon roof, rear-window sunshades, SIRIUS Satellite Radio, wood trim, Homelink, auto-dimming/power-folding outside mirrors, bi-xenon adaptive self-leveling headlamps, retractable high-pressure headlamp washers, 17-inch wheels, a sport suspension and rear side-impact airbags.

The A4's available four- or six-cylinder engines come with sophisticated new FSI Direct Injection technology designed to deliver increased power and better mileage. The V6 is the smoother and more powerful engine of the two, but the four-cylinder turbo is lighter (promoting better handling), less expensive and delivers better fuel mileage. Also available in varying combinations are front-drive and quattro all-wheel-drive systems, plus six-speed manual, six-speed Tiptronic automatic and continuously variable transmissions. If you opt for the V6, however, you'll have to take it with quattro all-wheel drive and the six-speed automatic.2.0-liter in-line 4 Turbocharged200 horsepower @ 5100-6000 rpm207 lb.-ft. of torque @ 1800-5000 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 23/34 (FWD manual), 24/32 (FWD automatic), 22/31 (AWD manual), 22/30 (AWD automatic)3.2-liter V6255 horsepower @ 6500 rpm243 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3250 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 21/29 (FWD automatic), 17/27 (AWD manual) 19/27 (AWD automatic)

The stylish A4 is made even more attractive by its window sticker. The entry-level 2.0T has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 29,015; quattro all-wheel drive bumps the price to $ 31,115. The A4 3.2 starts at $ 36,315 for the front-drive and $ 37,215 with quattro. prices, which reflect what buyers are actually paying at dealers, shows prices hovering about midway between MSRP and Dealer Invoice. As always, be sure to shop and compare using current prices. In terms of resale value (an important factor to consider when comparing vehicles), Kelley Blue Book expects the Audi A4 to hold its value better than the Volvo S40 and Saab 9-3, but to fall just short of the BMW 3 Series and Infiniti G35.

2007 Audi A4 Future Generations

Audi A4 Overview and History

Audi introduced their newest (4th) generation A4 model at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show. Featuring the same Volkswagen B6 (PL46) platform as its previous generation model, the 2004 Audi A4 underwent some massive changes in terms of suspension geometry and technological components.
Shower gels and generally beauty-product brands have a way of appealing to customers by thrusting desire through sensorial-related names and presentation of their offers. Olfactory sense-stroking balms and soothing cashmere-touch night cream-approaches are basically the most commonly used methods of conveying beauty and easy customer-access to deeply-rooted sensorial pampering, unless beauty is forged out of steel and thousands of accurately engineered parts.

Automobiles undoubtedly fall into the latter category, and what better way of striking at least one of the remaining three senses if not building an image of a mighty engine roar or purr of a loyal cylinder sextet cradled under the bonnet of an Audi car? Audi translates as 'listen' from latin and besides expressing an unanimously accepted passion of the motorist, that of listening to the engine as if it were a never before heard dissertation on mechanics blended with boisterous 'deux ex machina' comments and demonstrations, it also marks the birth of Audi following Horch's demise, the previous name of the company that can be traced back to 1899.

Its founder, August Horch was forced out of his own company in 1909 due to trademark infringements, 8 years after the first automobile had rolled out the gates of the plant in Zwickau, Germany. After having been dispensed of, Horch started his own company under the same name which led to a fair share of trouble that came to an end as soon as Horch called for a meeting at the apartment of Franz Fikentscher to discuss the matter and come up with a new name for the company. Franz's son who was studying latin at the time was the true deliverer of the name that would later became synonymous with luxury and quality. As 'Horch' means listen in Old German, the boy simply made a switched the name with its latin corespondent, 'audi', sparking enthusiasm into the 'audience' that quickly adopted the name.

Audi's start o the German market was high lighted by the appearance of 2.6 liter engine powered vehicles followed by a series of more powerful ones, such as 4.7 L and the gas-gulping 5.7 L. Having gotten to see his company grow wings, Horch left in in 1920, four years before Audi's first 6 cylinder model was built. In 19128, Audi was acquired By Jorgen Rasmussen, owner of rival company DKW.

A few years later, a merger between Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer occurred and thus, the Auto Union was formed in 1932. Those times called for a new badge and the four interlocked rings were born as a sign of unity and identity of the newly formed auto-conglomerate. Technological improvement became a top priority that first took shape during the Second World War when an armored car was produced for the German Army.

However, all the progress would soon be severely slowed down and even halted at times due to heavy bombings. Moreover, as as soon as the conflict had come to an end, Zwickau had been caught in the soviet occupation zone that would become The German Democratic Republic in 1949. Not only that the company's activity was in jeopardy but the Auto Union had also broken up and the Union had to be restarted n new grounds, in Ingolstadt, Bavaria.

Though sluggish at first, the newly Ingolstadt based factory would attract many of the former workers and the construction of two-stroke engines would be resumed in a way similar to that of Zwickau. By 1958, Daimler-Benz had already acquired a whopping 87% of the Auto Union but its investment quickly became property of Volkswagen, the company having bought the factory and  and the brands in 1964.

Soon after the change of ownership, two-stroke engines would be eliminated in favor of the more popular and more customer appealing four-stroke ones. DKW, the leading brand of the Union at the time failed as a brand despite of the changes  it had made and Volkswagen decided to resurrect Audi. The former DKW built model was rebranded as an Audi one and was the springboard for the make of later models such as the 60, 75 and 80.

After a second merger with the Stuttgart based car-producer NSU by 1970, Audi established itself as a reliable growing brand that would later break the German boundaries and expand to new markets, including the North American one where it encountered difficulties following the release of a biased report that portrayed the car as suffering form 'unintended acceleration'. This was caused by the close placement of the brake and acceleration pedals, right next to each other. Shortly after the report was released , an abrupt decline in sales was registered that was countered only years later with the 1996 release of the A4 model.

Joining a row of successful car-producers, Audi has also garnered acclaim on the racing track with several World Record holdings, including one for Top Speed Endurance. Audi is currently enjoying a privileged position and large market share and is predicted to reach the production threshold of 1 million units by the end of this year.

2007 Audi A4 Consumer Reviews

Oil Consumption issues resolved
This is for all consumers having Oil Consumption issues. I purchased my 07 A4 used with 54,500 miles on it. Right away I noticed the oil consumption problem. I tracked the consumption for about 10,000 miles and made sure the dealership knew the mileage everytime I had to put another qt in. The light was coming on down to just less than a 1000 miles to add a qt. I paid the out of pocket expense and the test came back that there was an issue. Audi Corp covered 85% of the repair and the dealership I purchased from, Elk Grove Audi, covered the remaining balance. Audi replaced the Piston rings. I now have close to 8000 miles since replacement and holding strong. Added 1 qt at 5000 mi.

3.2 quattro 4dr Sedan AWD (3.1L 6cyl 6A)
10 years of ownership
*10 years of ownership* after owning this car for almost 10 years I had decided to write a detailed review on my experience with this 2007 Audi A4 Quattro with the 3.2 engine. 0-80,000 miles absolutely problem free. During that one frame all that was done to the vehicle was routine oil changes (5,000 intervals as I do not personally think going 10,000 is a good idea), tires around 45,000 miles, I always use premium gasoline. 80,000-115,000: around 85,000 miles during service it was discovered that my valve cover gaskets were leaking oil that was around $ 250 with parts and labor. 95,000 miles I had all brakes replaced (pads, rotors on all four wheels) I ordered parts from Advance Auto Parts for $ 210 and still currently have them on the vehicle at 170,000 smooth as the Audi brand no need to pay for brand name very little brake dust as well. 112,000 miles I noticed that I could smell a burning oil. So I took it in to see what was wrong, the valve cover gasket appeared to be leaking again. So I had hen replace it once again. 115,000-145,000: no problems at all until 138,000 I noticed little drops of oil on my garage floor. I decided to take it in and was informed that my valve cover gasket looked like it was leaking again and that my rear main seal had a leak. At that point we figured that the actual valve cover itself may be warped. I decided to deal with the small drops of oil as I did not see it necessary to pay almost $ 3,000 to repair everything. I now have 170,000 miles on the car and it has never left me stranded. The key to keeping this car serviced it to find an independent mechanic that will treat you fairly. I see no need to replace this car anytime soon in the future.

Massive and frequent transmission failures
A more detailed report of my experience has been posted on NHTSA.GOV. The first transmission failed and was replaced under OEM warranty by an authorized Audi dealer at 36,120 miles. It continued to have mechanical issues such as shuttering, vibration, hesitation, leaks, etc. The 2nd transmission failed at 55,600 miles (less than 20,000 miles on the "new" transmission) while on the freeway traveling at 70 MPH. It occurred without warning. The car shifted into park, bucked and refused to accelerate. The 3rd transmission was installed under the Audi Pure Platinum Protection service, and after only 1,000 miles on the "new" transmission. it is showing signs of failing again.

Fantastic after 112k miles
I bought my A4 new in July 2007 and I have NEVER had an issue with it after 112k miles. Sure it burns oil a bit, but keep a quart in the trunk and your good to go. This is a car that is fun to drive and built solid. The only complaint I have is the glove box hing broke and they wanted hundreds to replace the whole thing...not me...I went and bought a 2 dollar hinge at Ace Hardware and screwed it in and it works great. I hope to keep my A4 for many years to come.

2007 Audi A4
"Fun little car"
This has been the best surprise I never expected. My first Audi (I am a BMW guy). Got it because it was half price used compared to a similar BMW. I am having a blast driving this car. Ages extremely well. Personal opinion is the quality of materials used in the A4 series Audi is far better than BMW 3 series, and comparable to the 5. German cars need proper maintenance. So you need to educate yourself and do most of the minor maintenance tasks. NEVER go the the dealer! Hugely overpriced and very subpar quality of work. They do not even use proper oils for these vehicles! Have not had any of the problems reported by some of the other reviewers, but I do not think it is luck. I had BMWs, MBs and also had very few real issues with them. Just do not ignore any signs when something feels wrong. Fix right away and do not over maintain. Also I was surprised by how large the vehicle feels inside. Extremely well distributed cabin and trunk spaces. Feels very safe to drive too. Car is 11 years old, driven in Chicago and does not have a speck of rust or anything broken in and out. Absolutely amazing!

2006 Audi A4
"Not another boring car"
First I own 2001 Audi A4 FWD 1.8T, for a four years, and I be honest I tied to fix it, nothing major but a lot of small things regularly has to be maintained. From 110k-150k it got me a lot of fun, but also a lot of headache. And at the end 150k miles it become extra expansive to maintenance, even if I already spent a lot for it. So what about A4 2006 2.0T AWD MT, when I bought it at 105k I already know, how long I can keep it, how much do I need to maintenance. Yes some staff it even extra complicated when you fix it yourself, but a lot of cars like cayenne and some v6 also double expansive, so I cant say what it very much, just need to see particularity condition of the car before you buy it. Suspension, leaks, transmission, turbo. And everybody who upgrade audi can appreciate the work what company did with it. 200hp feels like real, not a number in description. Full wheel drive make it save and comfortable. Design - yes its not another toytstyle car, even 11 years old car looks not to old. And at the end - every TFSI owners has to know the biggest minus in this engine - cam follower, what has to be changed very often, and possible can destroy your engine if you forgot about it. I really recommend to buy with 6 speed transmission, for people who want to feel sportiest in this car, and with some upgrades, you can reach EVO level for cheap and also a luxuriest in one car Its hard to find in good condition, but its not another boring car. It fast, nice look and safe.Read less

"Fun to drive expensive to keep"
I was so excited to buy my first car a 2008 audi a4 s-line package for 19000k that had 50000k miles on it. I should've did my research on how exspensive it is to maintain. The engine light came on as soon as i got it, the brakes are already bad, oil pan leaks, and as for interior The passenger seat is manual, the cup holders are in a dumb spot because of middle compartment. No aux cord and no automatic head lightseven tho a 08 and back seat panels fell off on both seats... I love the inside how it looks tho and I think its comfy and big back seat for a small car. Maybe if it wasn't so expensive to keep up I wouldn't mind it but gas, oil change, tires... To much..Read less
