Spending time behind the wheel of a 2019 Chevrolet Express conjures up a nostalgic feeling reminiscent of driving an older pickup truck. The ride can be bouncy at times, although it settles down when the road does the same. The Express’ turning radius isn’t as tight as rival vans from Ford and Ram, and its cornering abilities are far from confidence-inspiring. Those who drive a van for a living won’t find any of these conclusions eye-opening. What matters most is the Express’ strong V8 and diesel-engine options, easily configurable cargo bay and standard-height roof that takes the worry out of accessing areas with low clearance. The Express Passenger van can hold up to 15 people, but its seats lack the safety-oriented head restraints and armrests commonly found on its newer, European-inspired rivals.

6.0-LITER V8It’s nice to see big V8 power in a van like the Express. While the standard V6 does a pretty good job with medium-hauling duties, when you have 15 people aboard or a cargo bay full of equipment or boxes, the horsepower and torque offered up by the 6.0-liter V8 is a must-have.DRIVER-ASSIST FEATURESDriving a van, especially one without windows, always presents challenges. Thankfully, the 2019 Express offers such necessary driver assists as blind-spot warning, lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert.

Basically a box on wheels, the 2019 Chevrolet Express is designed for one thing: hauling stuff. Whether that stuff is people, cargo or some combination of both, the Express can handle it. Seating configurations range from two to 15 persons with a rear-air-conditioning unit to keep everyone comfortable. One oversight on Chevy’s part is only providing head-curtain airbag protection for the first three rows. For those hauling inanimate objects, the Express can be upfitted to suit just about any occupation, be it built-in tool boxes or unique shelving for a catering service.

Chevy’s Express, in either Cargo or Passenger versions, has been around for years and its shape is a familiar one. It’s a box with rounded corners and is not unattractive; in fact, it looks about as good as might be reasonably expected. Even though the vast majority of Expresses on the road are white, it is actually available in several colors. Exterior differentiations are few, but include sliding or split swing-out side doors and rear doors with or without windows. Obviously, Passenger models have windows along both sides, and a passenger-side sliding door is available on both versions of the van.

The 2019 Chevy Express puts function far above frills, but at its most basic does include power windows and door locks and air conditioning. Workmen can finally enjoy some tunes thanks to a standard AM/FM stereo with auxiliary input. Like other GM vehicles, OnStar with 4G LTE and Wi-Fi connectivity are fitted standard, a boon for operators who need mobile Internet connectivity. Base Express Passenger models include seating for 12 (15 in extended length). All models have stability control, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and dual front airbags. Passenger vans feature side-curtain airbags covering the first three rows.

If you want anything beyond the 4-wheeled transportation-and-cargo module that is the basic 2019 Chevrolet Express Cargo Van, you'll have to hit the option list. Luckily, it's pretty long. You can get navigation, Bluetooth, and backup sensors, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning and blind-zone alert, plus the most recent version of OnStar Commercial Link. There are also choices of a larger gasoline V8 or 4-cylinder turbodiesel, standard- or extended-body lengths, and various option packages. Passenger versions start with a higher equipment level than Cargo models, but otherwise the option packages are largely the same.

Standard on the 2019 Express is a 4.3-liter V6 good for 276 horsepower. One step up is the mighty 6.0-liter V8 touting 341 ponies and an impressive 373 lb-ft of torque. There’s also a CNG version of the V8. Finally, there is the optional 4-cylinder turbodiesel that produces a very impressive 369 lb-ft of torque, but only 181 horsepower. Still, as most vans are moving heavy loads at low to moderate speeds, this engine might just be the perfect balance between capability and good fuel economy. All Express vans are powered by their rear wheels and have an automatic transmission, a tested 6-speed unit for the V8 and a newer 8-speed for the V6 and diesel engine. While the gas engines are not as efficient as some rivals, good luck trying to tow 10,000 pounds with anything but an Express.2.8-liter turbocharged diesel inline-4181 horsepower @ 3,400 rpm369 lb-ft of torque @2,000 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: N/A4.3-liter V6276 horsepower @ 5,200 rpm298 lb-ft of torque @ 3,900 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: N/A6.0-liter V8341 horsepower @ 5,400 rpm373 lb-ft of torque @ 4,400 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 11/16 mpg

The Chevy Express Cargo van has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting around $ 33,100, while a base Passenger model starts at just over $ 36,000. The 2.8-liter diesel adds a cool $ 4,000 to the bottom line. At these prices, Chevy's full-size van starts slightly higher than the new Mercedes-Benz Metris and is in line with the Ram ProMaster and Ford Transit. It is several thousand higher than the full-size Nissan NV and around $ 10,000 beyond the Chevy City Express, a smaller cargo van based on the Nissan NV200 that is better-suited for light-duty work. Not surprisingly, the Chevy Express' pricing nearly mirrors that of its GMC sibling, the Savana. Before buying, check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying for their new van.

Chevrolet Express Overview and History

The Chevrolet Express replaced the Chevrolet Van in 1996. This car was the Long wheelbase version of the Chevrolet Express.
Chevrolet is the auto equivalent of a gene-boosted steroid-pumped feline. The ferocious cat was groomed by Swiss born racing driver Louis Chevrolet and business whiz Buick resurrector and former GM head William Durant, as a joint venture that started in 1910. Shortly after Durant was forced out of GM, he partnered with Chevrolet, whom he had previously employed at his Buick racing team, to regain the popularity he had lost.

The Chevy headquarters was set in Detroit and the newly formed brand was baptized, receiving its famous “bowtie” logo in 1913. There are several hypotheses as to how the logo design came to be, two of them being the closest to unanimous acceptance. One of the theories hints at the logo having been designed after a poster Durant had seen in a French hotel while the second claims the “bowtie” is actually a stylized representation of the Swiss flag cross.

No matter how it originated, the golden Chevy logo persisted. In fact, the brand grew at such a fast pace that it allowed Durant to regain ownership of GM in 1916. After having become wealthy enough, Durant bought a smashing 54.5 percent of GM's shares, reinstating himself as head of the auto empire.

Soon after the takeover, Chevrolet was absorbed into GM, becoming a separate division. Having gained even more strength after the merger, the newly formed entity was quick in starting off production and launched the model D in 1918. The V8 35 hp engines fitted on these cars were replaced by smaller 6 cylinder ones, that proved particularly successful on commercial vehicles. The engine gained reputation due to its high durability and earned the “cast iron wonder” nickname.

Only a few years later, Chevy revealed the SUV in its archaic form: the Suburban Carryall. Sporting rough terrain riding capabilities, seating for 8 and weighing around 1½ tons, it marked the beginning of Chevy's future SUV line-up.

The American producer continued its successful innovations streak by introducing the Powerglide transmission in 1950, becoming the first low-price competitor to equip its vehicles with automatic shifting. Shortly after the introduction of the fully automatic transmission, the legendary Corvette was born.

The Vette had such a good reception that it remained the longest running Chevy model in the brand's history, having also been the first American sports car to enter mass production. The Vette also premiered the usage of lightweight construction materials for the car's body, like plastic, at that time.

Following the acclaim garnered by the Vette's release, Chevy launched several other models, including the flashy Impala and the short lived air-cooled Corvair. During the 60's, Chevy reached its sales peak with 3 cars out of any 10 sold in the US. However, before such a performance was achieved, Chevy designed a new small-block V8 engine used to equip its '55 truck range.

This particular engine made it till today, going through plenty of modifications in the process ranging from lightweight, durable aluminum construction to ECU managed control and modern fuel injection for better dosage and increased power.

Although Chevy has been registering lower sales in the past few years due to uncontrolled brand extension, some of the “bowtie” emblazoned automobiles have become either cult classics or vintage collectibles, four wheeled icons as reminders of a past age of glory.

Da perfect family van
We wanted to put some distance between the back of our seats and the kids shoes. We got that and then some. Have traveled 1000's of miles of highway with the fam and loved it. Could never do it in a minivan. Mechanical problems: AC compressor froze and got stuck in the winter, cooling system leaks, had radiator replaced at 85000. No other major repairs, current miles 112000.

Do Not Buy
We bought this van new with Conversion package. Put in 1st transmission at 51K, 2nd at 75K ( 96 has big time transmission problems ) Intake manifold gasket, new radiator and finally fuel pump. About $ 6000 in repairs since we owned it. Cant wait to get rid of it.

Outstanding multi-purpose vehicle!
I bought this van 2 years ago having 174k miles on it. I'm approaching 200k now and it runs like new. It does need brakes every 15k because it's fairly heavy. I average 19+ mpg highway with a 5.7 350 V8, 8000lb towing capacity conversion van that is exceptionally comfortable for 7 people. If it ever does wear out I'll buy another one, but from talking to other owners it likely never will. This is the original engine and transmission having no repairs other than a radiator and a fuel pump at 185k. I understand the 4.3 v6 model to be just as good except for towing capability.

great vehicle
This vehicle has been fantastic. Only problems I have had in 90,000 miles is that the computer went bad and intake manifold gasket. Still tuns like brand new
arguefoxpro,
best vehicle ever!
This van is so reliable! Even with a few big things wrong with it a couple times it still performed at the best possible performance.Comfort overall is amazing tv,dvd,cd,radio,ac,and even a table that would stand in the floor! The towing package is the best;hauling horses at times it pulled like a real truck! And still didn't sacrifice comfort, power,or reliability. Amazing vehicle! This particular van has a high topper that holds all kinds of extras as well as fiberglass running boards that serve as kind of a wide body kit best van ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Why did Chevrolet quit making this van in AWD?!"
I really like my All-Wheel Drive 2007 Chevy Express passenger van. It's been very handy when moving my kids around the country, take vacations, or towing. It's been very dependable, although after 12 years it's starting to show rust in the body and I've had one of the side doors replaced and painted after rust penetrated the exterior sheet metal. Headlight buckets and parking brake cable replaced due to rust/corrosion. This full sized AWD van is absolutely excellent in snow and blizzard conditions. I've had it in the rocky mountains going up/down mountain passes in terrible weather and it performs excellent. It's really a shame that Chevrolet quit making the Express in AWD after the 2014 model year. It gets around 15-16 mpg on the highway with the 5.3L V8 flex-fuel engine. (I would buy another one if I could)

"Well cared for - long distance miles - new tires"
well cared for with regular oil changes - maintenance - new tires - most miles are long distance - very little local driving.
