Kia K5 Overview and History

Kia sounds surprisingly playful for a car manufacturer's name and as the brand's tag line reads, they really are all about the power to surprise. In fact, the Korean car builder has done so from its very inception in 1944 when it began as a steel tubing and bicycle parts producer. Six years later, Kia would reveal Korea's first bike.

Once the first step was made, Kia rushed through the process of developing light means of transport, such as scooters and fast forwarded through motorcycle building upon the point of reaching the necessary resources and experience to start building cars. The whole conversion process took Kia about two and a half decades to complete.

Bigger, richer and propelled by the enthrallment of having their own car brand, Kia poured a considerable amount of cash into a plant to accommodate its assembly lines.  By 1973, the new facility at Sohari saw completion, becoming Korea's first of its kind. Fully integrated and equipped with the latest cutting, bolting and welding machinery, the plant ulteriorly became the womb in which Kore's first internal-combustion gasoline engine would develop. The first Kia built car was unveiled one year later, a medium passenger car named Brisa.

Kia's sounding debut and modern technology caught the eye of different foreign producers(e.g. Peugeot and Fiat) with whom it partnered to house production of some of their models such as Peugeot's 604 and Fiat's 132.

By the 80's Kia had expanded to almost the size of its main competitor, Hyundai who was still the no. 1 Korean producer. Some of Kia's newer models at the time were rebadged and marketed abroad such as the Pride which sold overseas as the Ford Festiva. Only a few years later, Ford would manifest interest in the Avella, a subcompact car available in a 5-door hatchback version and a 4-dour sedan powered by either a 1.3 or a 1.5 liter engine. The Avella was rebadged as the Ford Aspire on the North American market.

The Korean manufacturer had not yet reached US shores on its own but it was only a few strokes away. In 1992, the brand was incorporated into the US and timidly started business through a tiny four-dealership network that sold its first vehicles in 1994. Ever since, Kia has been methodically expanding, reaching every state except north Dakota.

The main selling point of Kia cars was its affordability which was later supplemented by Kia's expansion into other market segments through the introduction of their first sport utility vehicle in 1995, the Sportage. From that point on, Kia suffered a fate very similar to that of Hyundai, company it would  later blend into due to unsuccessful management of financial difficulties.

Trouble began in the late '90 when the company became stagnant and thus unable to rollout new models. That's when Hyundai came into play. The major Korean car-builder got rid of  competition by means of merger. Both companies have experienced trouble and low sales due to reliability complaints over their vehicles.

The somewhat bland styling was not exactly what buyers were looking for in a car either so both had to undergo costly restructuring stages. Kia found itself rejuvenated by 2001 when, following its owner's example, it started working on a new vehicle line-up with an emphasis on quality and long-warranty offerings. Ever since, Kia has been steadily conquering segments of the European market, especially through the Cee'd, Sorento and Rio models. The development of newer, bolder designs is also among Kia's priorities, predating a future line-up with the announcement of concepts such as the Soul, unveiled at the Montreal auto show in 2006 and the Kee, a fresh coupe boasting strongly appealing style elements.

2021 Kia K5 Consumer Reviews

Engine Failure with Less Than 300 Miles
Bough brand new 2021 Kia K5 GT (not the GT Line). With LESS THAN 300 MILES and after owning for only 3 weeks the engine light came on and the car started shaking violently. Car has been at dealer for 5 WEEKS and they still do not know issue. Kia stonewalling on replacement or refund. Apparently engine issues are still a problem for Kia.
foderntider,
K5 GT line so far so good
Quite pleased with the 2021 K5. New owner and never purchased a KIA before. The looks styling and even the overall performance not to mention price point all came together to have us purchase this car. I am surprised that it’s as long as it is (8 inches longer than my Tesla Model 3) but it doesn’t feel “big”. Happy with performance and ride. I do not expect Stinger performance and as long as you have realistic expectations the vehicle will drive amazingly well and perform. We have the GT line with the 18” rims and it corners as good as a BMW 3 or 4 series.
servicesdicing,
This car is a kick in the pants!!
This is the first Kia I've owned and so far I'm not disappointed! It has all the bells and whistles plus some things I never knew I needed!
thankchase,
Smoothest car I’ve owned
The car met all my needs, it’s smooth, has all the features that I need, big trunk, comfortable and has really surprisingly big leg room
silverhelpless,
Really awesome car!!
Awesome car!! Extremely smooth handling, comfortable ride. I really do like everything about this car. Also great gas mileage, about 35 mpg on the highway. I had owned Pontiacs before I bought this car about 1 month ago, & I am so glad that I decided to buy this brand new Kia K5 LXS that had only 4 miles when I first test drove it. I now have a little over 1000 miles on it. Overall, as I rated it all 5 stars for the 6 features above, and it is definitely very well worth it, & I would highly recommend it to anyone who is considering buying a brand new Kia.
effectivetelling,
Love this car
I am very happy with everything about this car, except the USB port inability to play my iPod classic. Still trying to figure out a work around. Other than that I think the car is great.
flyablepursuable,
This Car is everything that I expected and more!
The Kia K5 is everything I wanted in a car it meets all of my needs and is so comfortable,it has so may options that have exceeded my expectations.
uncheckedseasoned,
Best bang for the buck!
The only draw back for me, no lumbar control. I'm 6'-2" and rented a car, they gave me the K5. 42 mpg on my road trip. Hit wet slippery roads over Soldier Summit...not one issue. What a wonderful car!
lyricsdata,
Crappiest car I’ve owned
It has weird smells, ac whistles, has transmission issues and slipping. Apple CarPlay and android auto both never work, the gas mileage it gets is not as advertised.
onlookerbolham,
this is my 3rd Kia
the overall ride and how quiet it is has plenty of power and the interior is stylish and comfortable and it has plenty of cool tech
sunnycomma,
Car is what I wanted in every way
It’s been exactly what I expected it to be. Reliable, comfortable and very sporty for the GT line. I traded off my optima for the K5, both vehicles were and are xxxx good
appraisersquash,
This car is everything I expected
I am very glad that I decided to get the K5. It is a sporty car that gets good gas mileage and is big enough for my family. Love this car.

My favorite car I’ve ever owned
My favorite car I’ve ever owned, this is my fourth vehicle but my first Kia, decided on this when I saw their new K5 (formerly known as optima) when I test drove it I fell in love and this car has more features and more comfort as well as better looking over all than the competition
sconnynepalese,

This car is so fun to drive!
I love my K5! I have been enjoying the sunroof and beautiful interior! If you are looking for a new car that has all of the features, look no further than the K5! This thing is packed with technology and the latest in Bluetooth and wireless charging!

Great Performance Stylish Car
Sporty look with good pickup, rides smooth. Comfortable with nice amenities inside. Large trunk room, also back seats fold down. Panoramic sunroof, GT line has no heated seats which is a down fall.
shrinksurgeon,
Pleasantly surprised at the quality.
I love this car. I’ve been a Honda person my whole life. How things change! I’ve owned 4 Accords, a Ridgeline, and a Prelude. By far, I am more pleased with Kia
subduedicecream,
SO Far its Aweome
This car has really surprised me, its spacious and luxurious. It has lots of features, and I am sure there are some that I haven't figured out yet. It has amazing acceleration in sport mode and its just an all around great buy. I love the body style and the sleekness of it

acutenesspace,
Eye catching and amazing to drive
I love this vehicle, color combo I picked is amazing and I get tons of people asking to look! This car is so fun to drive and I love all the features! Trunk opens a little hard but that is my only slight complaint about this vehicle!
uprightlength,
Just a good look!
I purchased this car brand new in Sept it has been in the dealership 3 times not worth the money I feel I should’ve got a Honda Accord or something the outside is very nice but the car dosent ride as smooth you can feel every bump and lump apple car play always messing up I’ve had to have an alignment and wheel balance they still can’t figure out what’s wrong with it definitely not worth it to me the dealership convinces you to bring it in more money and they never tell you the real problem a rock hit the windshield and the whole window busted only having it 3 months I’ve had no good luck with this purchase it’s always something wrong with this car
robbriefcase,
More than expected
Comfortable, easy to read dashboard, excellent acceleration, driver assist is great, back-in parking so easy with screen guidance, cross traffic notification great for parking lots. Interior seems huge. Very quiet ride even with roof open. Automatic volume control for radio is helpful. Gas mileage for local street driving is OK but not terrific. But I miss my CD player.
hammerlogger,
Stylish and safe
This car has nice features but it could use a couple of features charge port for the backseat a/c could have been a little more thought through I love the safety features on this car
vocalistheels,
Problems started in two weeks of owning car.
This car is not air tight. The engine sounds like rocker arms are loose. The engine constantly cuts out no matter what drive mode its in. When in sport mode the Rpm's reaches the red zone and stays between 5 and 6 and takes forever to change gears. This can't be good for trans. The sewing on the seats coming apart. The dealership can't hear me. They want to charge me. $ 145.00 if they say nothing is wrong. Water gets inside car and trunk when I wash it. I noticed that my car doesn't seem to be in line the trunk has a bigger space on one side where it meets body . Drivers doors are flush and passenger doors are not, I want to say its like the frame is twisted. These are all problems that QC at the factory should have caught before release. Now I see I'm not the only one with problems how do we go about getting some issues resolved. The dealers are only doing what they do. Brand new cars shouldn't have this many issues. Am I the only one that's feels this way?
springsrock,
Kia has stepped there game UP
This car is VERY classy. From the exterior all the way to the interior. Detail is everything in this vehicle, I LOVE IT. I was doing research on this car for 5-6 months before purchasing. Comparing to others such as the camry xse and honda accords. Im very happy with my purchase and that I got the car that I wanted! (Wolf grey with red interior). Drives AMAZING, the features in the car are AWESOME, and the look of the car gives a very sexy sporty feel.
addiebecome,
Love my K5
I fell in love originally with the Optima but absolutely adore the K5. I love the color and the interior is fabulous. It’s black with the sand interior.

Just a Beautiful Automobile
Exceeded my expectations of Kia vehicles and the financing process was a breeze ! The KIA 5, 2021 is for my daughters commuting and she loves it from day one !
raddedollhouse,
Very problematic vehicle!!!
This is the fourth Kia that I have owned, and for me the most problematic vehicle I have ever owned. The first week I had my K5 every light on the dashboard came on and stayed on for almost an entire day. When I took it back to Kia they said nothing was wrong. Now my driver side rear signal light has stopped working. I took it back to Kia and they said the wires were loose and needed tightening. That was last week, this week the signal light has again stopped working. Went back to Kia they said the turn signal needs to be replaced. How does anything needs to be replaced on a brand new car with only 8,000 miles on it?????

I had never drove a Kia before and was very impressed with the convenient of the controls. This car gave me what I was looking for plus additional things I had hoped for but didn’t expect to have. This car is perfect.

My 1st KIA - K5 GT-Line
I owned a 2013 Dodge Charger SXT but needed a new car. When deciding what to buy I test drove an Accord Sport, Camry SE, and was still interested in a Charger GT. I eliminated the Camry because of the interior layout. I eliminated the Accord and Charger because of the higher price with fewer upgrades. I bought a red K5 GT-Line with the panoramic sunroof. You get so many gadgets, a great look, a smooth responsive ride, lots of storage (golf bag with a push cart fit easily), and a quick enough acceleration with 30+ MPG. I love it so far. Even though I put 5 stars on the Reliability, its still too early to judge that.

My third Kia
This K5 was for my son I have an optima This has all the safty features we could ask for and more He had a Kia soul that was handed down from us (paerents)
primppicalo,
Very stylish.
Almost like rocket science at first. The car can drive itself. I Love all my up grades. Heated sets the most!. Back up cam is a nice touch.
courtequivalent,
Nice machine.!
Beautiful car inside and out! Wished they would have put fog lights on?? But that is not a deal breaker. Gets up and goes pretty good! Turbo helps. Love This car...she is a keeper!! The sapphire blue is awesome!!!
stressvanquish,
Best looking, Most reliable car I've owned!
I wanted to get a car that looked good inside and out, was reliable and wasn't expensive. I loved the yellow daylight running headlights when I first saw them. I think they are really unique and give the K5 a really beautiful look. I'm a big fan of the turbo that Kia has put into all of the engines. It gives the K5 a nice boost in the lower end of the powerband but in highway speeds its okay. The 10 year 100,000 mile warranty was another big reason why I got the K5. After 3 months of driving the K5 I still love the car.
guapocolumn,
In love!!!!
This car is top notch! My favorite is the panoramic sun roof😀 total power seats heated seats and steering wheel . All leather. Bose sound system!. Uuuuugh I love everything about it!!!!.

Love my new Kia
Love everything about my K5. Safety and warranty were HUGE selling points for us. It almost literally drives itself. The capabilities are endless. Mu personal favorite is the sound system and ease of use are a plus.

I’ve only put 300 miles on my car but so far I REALLY love it! I’ve gotten lots of compliments, it is loaded with comfort and convenience features, and drives like a dream!

Practically a luxury car without paying for it
After 3 years with a Kia Optima, I had no doubt about going to see the new Kia K5. Simply superior to what I thought. I was totally impressed with the new line, both in its exterior structure and in the interior details. Exquisitely comfortable with its wide and versatile leather seats. The navigation system with its 10.5-inch screen provides all the necessary information. The interior details make it a practically luxurious car with a high level of technology that gives the driver confidence when traveling. Definitely a big leap in quality from the Kia family.

First car i owned
Its very spacy and very gas economic. The new look on it looks amazing the heart beat led lights give it a mean look. I love this car
synthesisgem,
Do not buy if you have an iPhone.
I was most excited about the features this car offered, specifically apple car play. What a joke. It is messed up now and disconnects. It is all over the internet about the error messages that constantly pop up forcing you to hit ok and then the car play button again every two minutes to get back to maps or Waze. Obviously very dangerous. Apparently Kia just blames apple. This is unacceptable especially since usb is not useable with the iPhone in the car. Never would have bought this car. When I tell you it’s annoying and embarrassing it is!
potsubway,
K5 GT-Line Premium Package is just astonishing.
Priced around $ 28K, it give you the features of the luxury cars. Not just the awesome color and the sporty look, it is filled with abundant safety features, smart cruise control, wireless phone charger, and my favorite feature wireless Apple CarPlay. It even has dual Bluetooth connectivity so your friend’s playlist can be played while you use Google map on the infotainment system. The car is so smart it tell you that you left your phone in the wireless charger dock and something is left in the back seat -like grocery bags (or your child). I am enjoying every part of this car.
dwellerstaking,
Great car!
This car exceeded my expectations. Looking forward to driving it over the next several years! Happy with our decision. Its stylish and affordable! Great car!
compeltindows,
Great car. Where is the XM radio? Not in the car
I really like the car and am glad I leased it. Fun to drive. Sporty enough after several Mustangs. Not big time like Mustang but cheaper and very good in its own right. Only problem is the car is not equipped and not optional for XM radio. May not be a big thing to most people, but huge to me. I never thought to ask assuming all cars had capability to connect. XM says alot of brands cut out adding the XM. Sounds like saving a few dollars because as I was told "most people use their own playlist or whatever but there is no substitution for having the XM installed. Can't even add it on. Stupid mistake. Still love the car.

Best Vehicle I've Owned Yet...
I had a 2017 Optima LX which I bought in November 2017, and I loved it. Then the 2021 K5 came out, and I was loving the pictures and reviews being put out. I went to the local dealership and test drove the K5 EX, and fell in love. I traded the '17 Optima for the K5 EX in early August. Two months later and I'm still impressed. It's a comfortable, quiet ride. I haven't experienced any of the nuances that others have pointed out, such as rattling and/or squeaking sounds. The K5 is the fourth Kia I've owned.
subhelicopter,
Unbelievably Smart Car
Amazing how many features are packed into the EX version at a very competitive price, my favs: electric panoramic sunroof , WIRELESS CarPlay, wireless cell charging with an ingenious phone holder, etc. Small 1.6 liter engine, but with turbo charging and 8 speed transmission it feels fast, smooth and powerful. The only trouble I’m encountering is crashing of the CarPlay which is likely related to the IOS 14 update.
hangoverneedles,
My 3rd Kia
I’ve had a 2015 and 2018 Optima. I decided on K5 Gt line. It’s a very pretty car inside and out. More sporty than the Optima but better engine and gas mileage. I’ve had it a month and it’s going into the dealer for a 2nd time for couple annoying issues. There’s a squeak/rattle in the console /dash. The first attempt was told there was a recall and Kia knew of this issue. The other issue is the WiFi and apple car play. The WiFi goes out and screen goes black. Car play has no sound for phone calls. Even though I’ve done all the fixes I read about online, it doesn’t resolve the problem. Bit impressed at this point because I didn’t have these issues with CarPlay on my 2 previous Optimas.
romenike,
Excitement reigns in my 2021 K-5! WOW!
Roomy, smooth, quiet ride and 42 miles per gallon on my first trip driving home from dealership. Classy style, comfort beyond belief, safety features make me feel secure, and controls easy to read, operate and reach. Wide view of prairies, skies and deer moving toward the road is enhanced by the way the windows are configured from front to side. Plenty of leg room and the sun roof rocks! Great value for the money. Turbo engine is awesome when you need power to get around big trucks on short stretches, and taking corners on winding roads is like dreaming. Bought new after I sold my 2016 Optima for a great price (I loved that vehicle too, but the K-5 is the BEST!). Gorgeous sporty design in a sedan that is first class, and every trip in this car reminds me that whatever moves you is worth giving everything for. True to their advertising, boring doesn't fly here!
bordermatcher,
Unimpressed
I drove the K5 recently. It was all rattle and the engine made a lot of noise even when revving at 1500 rpm. Ride was uncomfortable an plastics are worse than a chevrolet. No thanks
leaderscab,
I prefer the Korean version
Test drive went well , comfortable interior quiet ride and handling a very good medium and very good steering.Wish there was a 360 camera which my 2017 optima has, a great feature. Also no automatic folding side view mirrors, an standard for years. the Korean version has A k5 that has features that the new Sonata has which I prefer.

Kia stepped up Big Time on the K5
This car has features my BMW didn't have and it drives great. Looks like an expensive sports car for less money. More bang for your bucks
keystonehubble,
K5 is a beast!
I'm totally and utterly in love with my K5. I have the 1.6L LXS. If I had to pick my top 3 things that made the K5 a worthy purchase, it is the following: 1) The huge, spacey touchscreen 2) The turbocharged engine that will safely and adroitly navigate you through the trickiest of traffic webs 3) The modern simplicity of the driver controls.

Kia K5 Well Done
Love the K5! The tech options are great. The car is great and drive smooth. Love the 4 different drive modes to try. Seats are incredibly comfortable and interior is sleek. Kia is now a true player in the aoto business. Quality product at a great price.

Excellent Car
I have only had my K5 for a week so I may still be in the honeymoon phase, but I am more impressed with this car the more I drive it. It looks killer and I have gotten a lot of stares and double takes. I am 6'2" and have plenty of room with some to spare. My only complaint so far is the upgraded EX package with 10" screen is missing wireless Android Auto and CarPlay. How is it that the standard stereo as this feature but not the upgraded version? I did quite a bit of research before the purchase and feel a little misguided, even from Kia's site and the dealer. It is not a deal breaker and the Bose system sounds amazing. However for the cost of the upgrade and all the other fancy tech in this car I don't get how this feature is missing!
pugsleyimprudent,
Prettiest car ever
Thought I wanted an SUV for hauling stuff. My mistake. The roomy trunk in the K5 serves all of my hauling needs. I love the gas mileage I'm getting and all of the safety features.

Very Reliable this is my third optima/k5
met all needs and is beautiful. many compliments and love the amber drl's engine is powerful for my needs and is very quiet. great car
spraychicago,
You won't be disappointed!
My new 2021 Kia K5 is the second Kia I've owned. I've owned it now for 3 weeks, and the honeymoon is far from over! :) Please note, the K5 NOT just a upgraded Optima. It's a re-invention of the Optima, in many positive ways. Kia's exterior styling of this car caught my eye big time. The performance is, in my opinion, exceptional. But it's the interior design that will make you fall in love! Kia has thought of pretty much everything as far as a driving experience. Kia has several trims available for the K5. I chose the EX. And the toughest decision for me was; which color?!?! hehehe I picked the Passion Red. In conclusion; It's stylish, and sporty; but not over the top gaudy. Expect stares from people.
retractunderwear,
Best Value
Third Kia I have owned. Best value for the money in price and warranty. Very dependable. Kia just keeps outdoing themselves in body style and options.
