The 2022 Genesis GV70 is the brand's all-new small luxury SUV. Smaller and less expensive than the similarly new GV80, the GV70 competes against such heavy hitters as the Acura RDX, BMW X3, Lexus NX, Mercedes-Benz GLC and Volvo XC60. After finally getting a chance to drive the GV70 for ourselves, we can state that Genesis is getting tantalizingly close to equaling the established German luxury brands.
While the GV70 shares some visual cues with its larger GV80 sibling, it definitely has its own distinctive style. The two SUVs have a similar-looking front grille and dual-stripe headlight clusters, but the GV70 stands out with a raked roofline and wagon-ish rear end that accentuates its length. These attributes lend the GV70 a sporty appearance not shared with the bigger, more conventional-looking GV80.
The GV70 comes with the same engines that are in the larger GV80, which is promising for performance since the GV70 weighs less. The 2.5T model comes with a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder making 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque, while the GV70 3.5T has a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 good for 375 hp and 391 lb-ft. Both engines have strong power outputs for the class. The GV70 also has an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive.
So far we've driven the top 3.5T Sport Prestige trim. Its turbo V6 is responsive and provides authoritative acceleration. You'd rarely ever feel the need to floor the pedal, but if you do, the GV70 also sounds good, with an enjoyable mechanical growl. On a winding road, this small SUV feels a bit larger than rivals in the class, but otherwise it's stable and secure. Selecting Sport mode stiffens up the ride quality for even more athleticism and should please drivers with a penchant for performance.
Not surprisingly, the GV70's sporty handling results in a rather stiff ride quality. Even in the Comfort drive mode, impacts from potholes are noticeably harsh. The large 21-inch wheels and narrow sidewall tires on our 3.5T test vehicle were likely contributors to the lack of initial compliance, but rivals with large wheels seem to absorb road imperfections better.
The GV70's front seats are noticeably firm compared to those in any other luxury SUVs, and we wouldn't be too surprised if that is a deal-breaker for some people. That said, after 90 minutes in the driver's seat, we didn't find them objectionable. Helping matters is a massage function that subtly shifts your contact points with the seat, temporarily alleviating hard spots. Wind noise is pleasantly muted at highway speeds, but road noise has a tendency to reach intrusive levels on coarser surfaces.
The GV70 has a long metal-trimmed oval that extends from the driver's side to the center of the cabin that contains controls and a digital climate control. It creates an interesting visual element but also sets the tone for the interior.
Most GV70s will come with a two-spoke steering wheel that is certainly different from the norm. The question is whether the wheel's quirky design is too outlandish for the standard luxury-crossover buyer. But what can't be questioned is the style and fit and finish in the vehicle we experienced. The quality of materials is better than in recent competitors from Lexus, Infiniti and Acura, and it's similar to what you'd find in a BMW X3 or Mercedes GLC. A few hard plastic surfaces on the center console pull you out of the premium luxury fantasy, however.
Getting in and out of the GV70 isn't the easiest. The door openings feel small, requiring 6-foot-tall passengers to both duck their heads and step up at the same time to get inside. This is especially pronounced in the rear. Once inside, there is plenty of space in the front, but rear passenger space is more restrictive than in other small SUVs. Legroom and foot space are at a premium, and even an average-size adult will likely wish for more space to stretch out, especially on a longer journey.
There's no shortage of interesting features inside the GV70. The new SUV comes with a 14.5-inch touchscreen atop the dash, and an available digital instrument display that has a cool 3D effect for its graphics.
The touchscreen is controlled by a knob that is much easier to use than the flush-mounted dial in the GV80. Unfortunately, the infotainment dial is situated too close to the gear selector dial and we found it far too easy to inadvertently spin the wrong one. To its credit, the system is smart enough to know not to shift into park or reverse while you're in motion.
As in other Genesis models, we've found the infotainment system menus in the GV70 confusing to navigate at times, though we do like the simple interface and impressive graphics. In testing the integrated navigation system, we found the voice prompts too quiet and seemingly not adjustable. Even with the radio off, it was difficult to hear the directions clearly. The top trim's head-up display helps clarify those directions slightly.
We're much more pleased with the GV70's suite of advanced driver aids. During our brief drive in congested city traffic, the lane keeping assist system worked well and the frontal collision warning system didn't fire off any false alarms. The GV70's Highway Driving Assist 2 system combines adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist to alleviate a lot of the driving burden yet still requires drivers to be alert and have their hands on the wheel. As traffic slows to a stop, the system automatically maintains a safe distance and keeps the vehicle centered in its lane, with no inelegant brake inputs or lurches. The smart adaptive cruise control also uses machine learning to mimic your particular driving style, using data from when the system is inactive.
Other convenience tech features include a fingerprint reader that can restore a driver's seat, climate and audio preferences with a simple touch on the dashboard. There's also a keyless option for qualified Android phones as well as a credit card-size secondary key. Remote self-parking furthers the GV70's convenience factor as the vehicle can maneuver itself into a tight spot without having a driver inside.
Front seat passengers enjoy a decent amount of space for their personal items, with a wireless phone charger, moderately sized cupholders and door pockets. The real enticement, however, is the GV70's cargo capacity. With 28.9 cubic feet of space, it's positively huge and almost 50% larger than the cargo space in the top-ranked Mercedes-Benz GLC.
Speaking of the Mercedes, the base Genesis GV70 enjoys a significant price advantage over a similarly equipped GLC to the tune of around $ 9,000. At the top of the lineup, the GV70 Sport Prestige model costs about $ 10,000 less than an equivalent Mercedes-AMG GLC 43.
In regard to fuel economy, the base GV70 with the 2.5-liter engine gets an EPA-estimated 24 mpg in combined city and highway driving. (Larger wheels can drop that figure by as much as 2 mpg.) Going with the more powerful 3.5-liter V6 results in a 21 mpg combined estimate. These estimates are comparable to those for other SUVs in this class.
Genesis has been steadily improving the quality, performance and refinement of its vehicles over the short time since the brand has been established. The 2022 GV70 is a clear example that it's capable of challenging the likes of Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The GV70's slightly too-stiff ride quality, overly firm seats and limited rear seat space keep it from full contender status, but the superb amount of features you get for the money is enough to make the GV70 worth checking out.
I think this car is worth a look if you’re shopping in the Q5/GLC/X3 space. I traded in a 2018 Q5 Premium Plus for it and so far it’s been superior to the Audi in most areas. My rating is 4 stars due to the dealership experience and option unavailability on the 2.5.
Pros
-The 2.5 puts out 300hp and over 300lb ft of torque. It seems noticeably faster than the Q5 I traded. (Not as fast as the X3 M40s I test drove)
- Good steering feel. The AWD is rear biased and the steering feels more communicative than the Audi
-Styling. Styling is subjective but I think the interior/exterior design is better than what the Germans are putting out
-Warranty. Genesis gives a longer bumper to bumper and powertrain warranty than the Germans. The complementary 3yr/36k maintenance is a nice add on.
-Features/Misc. The standard safety features are great and it just has a lot of “neat” tech features for the price. The highway driving assist and smart cruise are really good.
Cons
-Combined gas mileage is only in the 21-22 mpg range. I was getting 25 mpg in my Q5
-The Lexicon audio is good but not great. It has good clarity but the bass is noticeably weak.
-The dealership experience is lacking. This is expected since Genesis is colocated with Hyundai. For now I’m ok with it since my previous Audi/Lexus dealer experiences were just ok.
-The way Genesis only makes certain options only available on the 3.5 trim is annoying. There’s no good reason the full digital instrument cluster and ELSD aren’t available on the 2.5 Sport Prestige.

A Porsche Macan for $ 43k out-the-door!
Believe me when i say that “Made in Korea” screams QUALITY! Performance! Luxury! 2.5L Turbo 300 hp. Exhilarating adrenaline when you switch to sport and push on the pedal. Launch control, all time 4WD, Auto steer lane assist (even with hands-off ;-) stop & go cruise with machine learning -comes standard. Tesla like Genesis app gives you full remote access to your car from anywhere as long as your phone has network. Apple car play & Android auto is standard. Colors & trims are at par with the german makes -benz bmw. Far superior than audi, lexus, acura, infiniti, volvo -period! 3 year service valet, 3 yr maintenance, 3 year roadside assistance, 3 yr Genesis connect service -FREE!

AMAZING
I love love LOVE my GV70!!! The exterior design is sleek and an eye catcher from the front or rear. It's like a Bentley...until a Bentley pulls up. The GV70 '22 is brand new and looks amazing. Pluses - the console has a 14 inch-touch screen display, the gear shift is a dial, there is massage capability in the driver seat, there's heated AND ventilated seats, the ambient interior lighting is nice, panoramic moonroof, and there are unique Interior leather colors (i.e. red, blue, green). The red is H-O-T. The only minus I would say is the gas mileage. I keep mine on eco to save on gas. You get a lot for for an SUV at this price point. The drive is smooth. Thumbs up for 375 hp . I like that the packages are straight forward and easy to understand. There are not a ton of add ons that get confusing. I have the 3.5T Sport Standard. It feels luxurious!!!

Better than expected outcome!
Excellent service and advice throughout the purchase process. I honestly felt the team was working for my best interest when they recommend the GV70 2022. 4wheel drive fully equipped and safety features that were everything I desired!
schoolsunkindness,
Better than paying $ 92k for a Macan GTS
GV70 S/P is a great purchase and the warranty is un matched in this segment.

Melbourne Matte
Was looking hard at the Audi SQ5, but, thankfully, inventory was limited. Was driving a Lexus GS350, but with 2 young girls growing, I needed more space. Originally wanted the blue, but could only find one with the red interior, which I didn't want. Found one in silver at the dealership, then saw the Melbourne gray Matte, and truly fell for it. I am a V6 guy, so I had to get the Sport. Though I drove a Genesis years ago, and absolutely loved the Lexicon system, when the lease was over, I left my drive with a huge catalog of music in it, and don't have the energy to make another one so I mainly listen to sports talk radio, so I didn't need it. When I drove off the lot, literally every person there stopped and stared as I drove off. It was awesome and so is this car. Well done Genesis, well done!
primppicalo,
Big Disappointment!!!
I know there are others who seem to love their GV70, but to me its a huge disappointment. The fit and finish is terrible with parts that do not fit properly to scratches on the paint and rims. The seats are OK, but the car rides too firm. It's a wannabe Porsche, but make no mistake, this is NO luxury car. It's just a juiced-up Hyundai. The gas mileage you get with this car is horrendous. I average 18 mpg on premium fuel. This car showed so much promise, and it turned out to be a huge letdown. If you're looking for a great luxury car, go with the real name brands like Mercedes, BMW and Porsche. Don't bother with this dud.
halldomino,
Love it!
Got my 2022 GV70 in mid-August 2021….wow. Always been a sport sedan guy but needs an SUV and I am thrilled to say this is the sport sedan of suvs. Blast to drive….only missing wireless CarPlay, but just about every other bell and whistle i wanted.

Luxurious
This a beautiful and luxurious vehicle with all the sporty and up greated features, as any suv on the market. To include, Mercedes, BMW, Porche, or Lexus . I purchased the GV 70 Sport Prestige addition, love it.
mercifultuesday,
Love my gv70
Great looking car! Many people that see it think it’s a Porsche. Fun to drive! Love my 3.5 turbo sport prestige package.

Puts the German Luxury SUVs to Shame
I was hellbent on getting an Audi Q5. Test drove the car and while it was nice, something was picking at my brain saying "this really isn't worth $62K" so I left the dealer saying I would sleep on it. Everything happens for a reason because not much later I got a call from the Genesis Concierge service saying they had the GV70 in stock and if I wanted to check it out. Took it for a test drive and fell in love immediately. 3.5T Sport Advanced in the most gorgeous matte grey. I've been stopped multiple times to get compliments on how beautiful the car is.
Outside of looks, the performance is phenomenal! Buttery smooth acceleration & down shifts, superb cabin noise isolation, adaptive and smooth handling--it puts it's German rivals that are at and even above it's price range to complete shame. On top of all that it's exceptionally functional: all the safety features you can ask for, it can borderline drive itself, has remote and smart park features, and comes with Hyundai/Genesis' unbeatable warranty and maintenance.
It's a near perfect vehicle and only have a few minor gripes:
The infotainment control wheel and the gear shifter wheel are adjacent to each other so you'll naturally mistake one for the other. You get used to it over time and there are safety measures in place to ensure you don't shift into the wrong gear by accident, but it can be a bit if a nuisance.
I'd personally prefer a volume knob instead of the roller wheel, but again, very minor.
Lastly, the gas consumption & mileage isn't the best. The gas tank is pretty small, only a gallon larger than my previous Honda Accord, and with such a powerful engine, you can get under 300 miles on a full tank which isn't the best. Should they come out with a PHEV version of this car, it's as good as mine!
Otherwise, do not sleep on this vehicle, you won't regret it!
yieldpseudo,
Truly a well balanced engineering feat
I've been patiently waiting for two years for this car to arrive. It looks even better in person than on a monitor. The interior is luxurious, the performance stunning and the tech element is out of this world. Rear passenger comfort is excellent-I only wish US spec cars had cooled rear seats. Love the stereo, love the color. This is unlike any car on the road yet it has resemblances to a few key players. The SUV drives extremely well. Road noise could use some work in the next model year. Cargo volume is adequate. It does everything well!
rubbishlibrary,
LOVE IT !
Bought my GV70 3.5T sports prestige 1 week ago... Uyuni white + red/black interior. It's a work of art and a joy to drive! I understand Genesis is a relative newcomer to this market, but I absolutely love what they've done with this vehicle in particular. Bold new design, beautiful style, outstanding comfort, great performance, cutting-edge technology & class-leading warranty (+ extended lifetime drivetrain warranty at no additional charge through high-volume dealer). I bought this to replace my previous 2011 Audi S5 (last of the great S5 V8s... great vehicle), and so far I'm loving it :).
speechquill,
Traded a Mercedes
Car is outstanding in every aspect - Power, Looks,Performance, Technology, Fit & Finish. The only complaint I have is centered on the Controller: when using the controller to cancel a destination on the GPS you turn the wheel backward to move the curser to the right. I loce the Ergo seats and the side bolsters that automatically deploys when you go to sport mode.
vocalistheels,
Best vehicle I have ever own so far!
I went to test drive the GV80 when they did not have any, but had the new GV70.
I had no idea of its existence and was blown away.
The following week (when they received another order of inventory) I test drove the Himalayan Gray, with contrast red/black interior. 3.5l 375hp Sports Prestige package for $65k - I was sold.
I have been driving it for a week now and even my family and friends have been impressed with this inside and out. The tech package that is included is phenomenal compared to the other high end luxury brands. I considered the Benz AMG GLC 43 but the base model (for a 2021) was still 67k with no special tech package compared to the Genesis.
I don't regret my decision one bit - the Nappa Leather interior, suede headliner, 3D cluster and head-up display are great. To my surprise, this thing also has a lot of self driving capabilities on the interstate. I'm a little cautious with this though (as one should be) but it's amazing that it takes turns by itself. Crazy. I'm in love with this vehicle. 5 stars all the way.

Sport and/or Luxury on Demand
This is the best SUV I have ever driven. It has fantastic exterior and interior styling, smooth yet quick 3.5TT engine, and all the bells and whistles to keep you excited to drive it ever time you get in. Drive it in comfort mode and this thing is buttery smooth and dead silent. Throw it into sport or sport+ mode and this thing comes alive and will keep up or pass nearly any car on the market.
coffeediscover,
Incredible luxury for a stunning price
This car is amazing. The tech surpasses what’s currently available in a Tesla Model Y (which is what I was cross shopping it with) and the ride quality is as smooth as SUVs that cost 90k+. The fit and finish is fantastic, and it’s just an overall pleasure to drive it around town. Also, everyone thinks it’s either a Bentley or an Aston Martin, so expect some attention on the road.
packagerooted,
Everything I had hoped it would be..
I got lucky and stumbled into my local Hyundai/Genesis dealer one day after they got a few of the top trim Sport Prestige 3.5 TT in. I took a long test ride and put down a deposit. This vehicle was not supposed to be out for months.
I've only had it a week but I am very impressed. The styling inside and out is unique and beautiful. The 3D digital gauge cluster is awesome. Lexicon stereo is one of the best I've heard. Huge thin rectangular infotainment screen is laid out perfectly with both touch screen and a hand-dial that feels like a swiss watch and even accepts hand-writing. The whole layout is a 10. I just wish they switched the position of the infotainment dial and the transmission dial.
The power from the 3.5 twin turbo is smooth, sneaky fast and coupled with a good 8 speed transmission always on point. Especially in Sport and Sport plus mode. That's when this baby comes alive. It's not a sports car though and there is some body roll in tight corners and it's geared more towards a luxury ride than a stiff sports ride like the Alfa or jaguar F-pace. It's very quiet at speed even with 21' wheels. It is turning heads out on the street that is for sure..
Time will tell but I think Genesis is hitting home runs and this one is a walk off!
casuallythinning,
Fun to Drive and Fast
I had a chance to test drive a fully loaded GV70 twin turbine V6. Handling and acceleration were superb. The styling and fit and finish are outstanding. Only drawbacks are that the options that are available come in packages that escalate the price upwards in a hurry. For example if you want to get the 4 cylinder with a Sport appearance package only you have to add 2 other packages that you may not want. Oddly, the Korean version and website allows you to add only options that you may want. Watch out BMW and Audi!
