Just as the market grows for ever-roomier sedans and crossovers, so does the demand for smartly packaged small cars that can perform tricks like their larger counterparts. The 2017 Hyundai Accent is a top choice in this category thanks to a satisfying combination of performance, utility, comfort and style. Choose a sedan if you want a trunk or a hatchback if you want maximum utility.

Though there's nothing flashy about the Accent, it's a handsome car in either sedan or hatchback style that will endure the daily grind with minimal fuss. It's one of the quicker cars in its class, which you'll appreciate with every merge into freeway traffic. It offers both manual and automatic six-speed transmissions with solid feel and tuning.

What's more, the Accent is surprisingly quiet and soft on the road, so even those with longer commutes won't regret choosing this Hyundai over a larger, more expensive car. Passenger space is also generous, with plenty of backseat room for two adults. (Technically it's a five-passenger car, so we can't recommend placing three friends in the backseat if you wish to remain friends.)

There are compromises. Not only are the Accent's fuel economy estimates lower than many of its subcompact rivals, we found it difficult to match those numbers in real-world driving. The hatchback's rearward visibility is also challenging, and there's no optional rearview camera.

The 2017 Hyundai Accent is available as a small four-door sedan or a four-door hatchback. Both seat five passengers. The sedan is available in base SE and Value Edition trims, while the hatchback comes in SE and Sport variations. Each uses a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine (137 horsepower, 123 pound-feet torque) and either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The Accent is front-wheel-drive.

The SE sedan comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission, 14-inch steel wheels, keyless entry, air-conditioning, full power accessories, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-adjustable steering wheel, a driver-seat armrest, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, a trip computer, and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player, satellite radio and USB/auxiliary inputs.

The Value Edition sedan adds a six-speed automatic transmission, 16-inch machine-finish alloy wheels, rear disc brakes, hill start assist, steering-wheel audio controls, cruise control, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and a center console storage box with a sliding armrest console.

The SE hatchback shares the same features as the sedan but adds a rear window wiper. The Sport trim combines SE and Value Edition features and adds heated side mirrors (with driver's blind-spot viewer and integrated turn-signal indicators), a body-color spoiler, projector-beam headlights with LED accents, foglights, sport-tuned steering, a leather-trimmed tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, upgraded cloth upholstery and piano black interior accents.

Each vehicle typically comes in multiple versions that are fundamentally similar. The ratings in this review are based on our full test of the 2014 Hyundai Accent SE 4-door hatchback (1.6L 4-cyl.; 6-speed automatic). Some observations regarding visibility and cargo space will differ from the sedan. We've noted this where possible.

NOTE: Since this test was conducted, the current Accent has received minor revisions to trim and feature content. Our findings remain broadly applicable to this year's Accent. (Our SE test car car, for example, is roughly equivalent to today's Sport trim hatchback.)

If your last recollection of driving an economy car involved a jittery ride, incessant wind noise and the need to put the pedal to the floor to outpace the semi truck in your rearview mirror, we have good news: The 2017 Accent is none of those things. Its 4-cylinder engine is efficient and capable, and its ride quality is more refined than this car's size may lead you to believe. As much as some of our editors love a manual transmission, there's not much reward beyond cost savings for the one here; opt for the automatic if you can. The Accent's seats are comfortable, and even our taller editors found good head- and legroom up front. The Accent isn't all that dynamic or a barn-burner, but for running errands and moderate highway hops, this Hyundai more than serves its purpose.

GENEROUS WARRANTY Although you hope you’ll never have to use it, the peace of mind provided by the 2017 Hyundai Accent’s warranty is priceless -- and a further testament to Hyundai's belief in the quality of its products. The warranty includes 5-year/60,000-mile basic coverage and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty covering the engine and transmission. HATCHBACK MODEL You never know when you'll need extra room for gear. That's just one of the reasons we like hatchbacks. Beyond offering more cargo space behind the rear seats than a sedan's trunk, with seats folded the Accent hatchback opens up 47.5 cubic feet of volume.

The 2017 Hyundai Accent subcompact's 5-passenger interior layout isn't all that exciting, but it is functional. Controls for audio, climate and phone connectivity are easy to locate and use. The blue-hued backlit buttons and knobs are a nice touch and especially useful at night. Sedan versions of the Accent have a 13.7-cubic-foot trunk and 60/40-split-folding rear seats to accommodate larger items. But the real cargo-carrying hero in this lineup is the Accent hatchback, which offers 47.5 cubic feet of capacity with the seats folded -- nearly as much as a small SUV.

The 2017 Hyundai Accent isn't flashy, but it's polite and functional. Now one of the older models in the Hyundai lineup, the Accent lacks the gaping, hexagonal grille that distinguishes most of its kin. In addition to its more practical nature and added cargo capacity, we think the hatchback makes a bigger statement than the sedan. At 162 inches in length, the hatchback is a significant 10 inches shorter than the Accent sedan, which makes it even easier to park in small garages or tight places.

With the addition of the new Value Edition, the 2017 Accent sedan and hatchback are available in two trims each. Base SE sedans and hatchbacks have air conditioning, power windows/door locks, a 6-way-adjustable driver's seat and 6-speaker AM/FM/CD audio system with USB and auxiliary inputs, but no Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control or steering-wheel-mounted audio controls. If you go with the sedan, we recommend spending the extra $ 705 for the Value Edition, which brings those MIA amenities and more. All 2017 Accents include Hyundai's excellent warranty that backs the powertrain for 10 years/100,000 miles. You'll also get five years/unlimited miles of roadside assistance.

Accent SE sedan and hatchback trims can be had with a 6-speed automatic transmission instead of the standard 6-speed manual. Most buyers will prefer an automatic, which adds an extra $ 1,000 (sedan) or $ 1,200 (hatchback) to the bottom line. The Accent Sport Hatchback is the best equipped of the models, and the only one to offer a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel for an optimal driving position, heated side mirrors, projector headlights with automatic on/off, fog lights and driver's window with auto-up feature. That top model also has premium cloth seating, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob and piano-black interior accents.

All 2017 Hyundai Accent models use a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine with gasoline direct injection (GDI) that translates to satisfying throttle response. Offering 137 horsepower and up to 37 mpg, this little engine puts out a good blend of power and efficiency, though it still can't quite match the fuel-economy figures of the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa Note or Toyota Yaris iA. All Accent models are front-wheel drive and use a standard 6-speed manual transmission or the more recommendable and popular 6-speed automatic transmission with Hyundai's Shiftronic manual control. 1.6-liter inline-4 137 horsepower @ 6,300 rpm 123 lb-ft of torque @ 4,850 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 27/37 mpg (manual), 26/36 mpg (automatic) Note: Due to changes in EPA testing to more effectively reflect real-world conditions, some 2017 models show slightly lower fuel-economy scores than their 2016 versions.

The 2017 Hyundai Accent SE sedan with manual transmission has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 15,580. An automatic transmission costs an extra $ 1,000, and we recommend the new Value Edition trim, beginning at a still-reasonable $ 17,285. Accent hatchbacks begin at $ 15,830 and rise to $ 18,330 for a top-line model. These prices aren't the lowest -- a Ford Fiesta undercuts the Accent, as does a basic Nissan Versa -- but they still fall on the value end of this segment. The Accent's cousin, the Kia Rio, begins slightly lower with crank windows and, on the top end, ends higher with its better feature set. The Honda Fit starts slightly higher, as do the Chevrolet Sonic and Toyota Yaris. Before buying, check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others are paying. The Hyundai Accent's resale value isn't expected to be particularly strong, and is far outdistanced by the Honda Fit.

Hyundai Accent Overview and History

Hyundai is a self-grown South Korean brand of automobiles established in the 1960's. Presently part of the Hyundai Kia Automotive Group, the motor company has registered a steady growth over the past few decades, having successfully entered European and American markets. The assembly lines operated by the company were built to match its size, the manufacturing facility in Ulsan being able to produce 1.6 million units per year.

Founded by Chung Ju Yung, born into a poor family of farmers, the Hyundai Motor Company became the first Korean car producer. The grounds for founding a car company could not have been more welcoming since post-war years in Korea brought forth a series of  odd politics one of which stated that automobile imports were better than having a Korean car brand.

Yung was quick to fill the void, having raised enough capital for the investment from his  very profitable construction business, opened  in 1947. One year after its birth, the Hyundai Motor Company signed a technology-share agreement with Ford in 1968. Soon after Hyundai's access to Ford's resources, the first Hyundai car was developed: the Cortina. This model was quickly followed by the release of the Pony, Hyundai's first entirely Korean designed and built model. Its blueprints however, were not all-Korean, the company having used Japanese technology from Mitsubishi to develop the car.

Japanese constructors at the time had already developed wide range of models, many of which were  exported worldwide, mainly to the US and South America. The Pony model was the first Hyundai to be shipped overseas in 1975.

However, Hyundai would only cross US borders later, in 1986, with the release of the Excel. The subcompact car was an instant hit with its fairly small price tag accounting for most of its popularity. The Excel was such a hit that it sold in over 100,00 units in the first seven months.

This was the last automobile that Hyundai produced before resorting to their own technology in 1988. The Sonata was their first born, a mid-seize car that marked the beginning of a new era. Despite the steps the company had taken into building a strong brand image, the reputation Hyundai  had previously collected was lost because of  poor quality and reliability complaints.

As soon as the 90's came, Hyundai was short of air on American territory, struggling for one last gasp. Instead of  retreating, the company made massive investments in new design and technology. By the time the new millennium came, the company had already reinstated as one quality car manufacturer.

Sales increased once more and with them so did the buyer's confidence in Hyundai. The sudden shift in consumer behavior was made possible by eliminating all worries regarding the vehicle's reliability through the introduction of a 10 year warranty to US sold vehicles only. Since few companies could top that, Hyundai quickly earned a spot in the world's top -10 car manufacturers.

Hyundai is currently operating in 193 countries, selling vehicles through approximately 5,000 showrooms and dealerships. Sales have also aided image growth, the brand having entered the first 100 most valuable brands of the world. Its recent history is strongly connected to investments in technology and ample advertising campaigns. Indeed, communication is one of Hyundai's inherent elements, best described by their logo: the stylized H is in fact a representation of two men (brand-buyer) shaking hands.

2017 Hyundai Accent Consumer Reviews

Sport 4dr Hatchback (1.6L 4cyl 6A)
I love my Hyundai Accent
This is my first new car and I love it! I have had absolutely zero buyer's remorse. Previously I was driving a 1995 Nissan Altima, so this car is a huge improvement in every way possible. I live in a rural area and commute to work so I wanted something with good fuel economy, great night time visibility, and something I feel safe driving. The Accent exceeded all of my expectations. I am averaging 40 mpg! I've driven over the mountain pass recently and averaged 41 mpg! The steering is fantastic and I love driving through traffic circles and winding roads. The interior feels huge when you're inside the car and I can haul so much that I'm still shocked by the cargo space! The headlights are amazing, I feel like I have a really clear view of what's happening on and off the road around me. I love the Bluetooth capabilities, I am constantly playing music from my phone and love that I can safely answer phone calls. Even the color and appearance of the car is enjoyable. I opted for red because I wanted a bright color so my car wouldn't blend in with the background of rural driving. The dealership has contacted me multiple times to ask how I'm enjoying the car and I have no complaints. This is by no means a luxury vehicle and I've seen plenty of reviews complaining about the lack of features. This is a very basic vehicle by today's standards but if you've been driving an old rust bucket this car is a dream.

Value Edition 4dr Sedan (1.6L 4cyl 6A)
Great engine and transmission--well built!
The 1.6 engine and 6 speed auto makes this car a great value! It is solid and gets you from point A to B easily! The seats are comfortable and supportive. The stereo really sounds decent for a small car. The warranty is the best and can be expanded to a 10 year 120,000 bumper to bumper! You won't find that with any other small car! 13,000 miles and still no issues! Great little car!

Sport 4dr Hatchback (1.6L 4cyl 6A)
Awesome Bang for the Buck...
Apparently October 2017 is a great time to cut a deal on a brand new Hyundai Accent Sport Hatchback. I leased a 2014 Sonata Limited for 3 years and have a foundation with Hyundai automobiles. I wanted a fuel efficient run around town car and the Accent Sport has exceeded my expectations. The car is literally loaded with every imaginable Sub Compact Options, Safety Features, Entertainment, and Electronics. I test drove the car twice and it was the 2nd test drive that sold me. Comfortable Seat, Sure Footed Ride, Acceptable Road Noise, Adequate Stereo, Fuel Burn Computer, Plenty of Room in the Cockpit for 4 plus Cargo. Alloy Wheels? 4 Wheel Disc Brakes? Steering Wheel Mounted Controls? Bluetooth Hands Free? 30mpg around town? 37mpg HWY? Best Warranty in America today. I paid $ 13,000 Cash. What's not to like? The ONLY gripe I would pass on is without a Turbo the 1.6L DGI engine requires a healthy amount of pedal to get moving. 3 Driving Modes...Eco, Sport, Normal... Take a Test Drive and decide for yourself. After all, this is a bottom of the line model for Hyundai...

SE 4dr Hatchback (1.6L 4cyl 6M)
Hyundai Accent for the win!
I love this vehicle! We just drove it for over 300 miles and it only took $ 25 to fill it back up. It drives amazingly and it's so quiet you sometimes can't even tell if the engine is running. One thing I like is that it has anchor holds for a car seat that our previous car did not. I felt so paranoid because the only thing holding down our 2 year olds carseat was a seatbelt. The anchor holds are so much more secure.
