The 2017 Buick Regal occupies a unique space in the midsize sedan segment. It's a small notch above run-of-the-mill sedans but doesn't quite make the leap to entry-level luxury, as the Cadillac ATS does. The Regal will appeal to buyers who prioritize value, with its solid foundation of standard features and approachable cost of entry.

The 2017 model year marks the end of the current Regal generation, so few changes beyond a couple paint colors and new wheel designs separate the 2017s from last year's models. The base front-drive model comes with a 2.4-liter engine that returns slightly underwhelming acceleration and fuel economy. All models above the base 1SV trim receive a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a much livelier output of 259 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, and that's the engine we recommend getting. Buick's ambitions to present the Regal as a more premium model aren't as effective as when it first came out, though, mostly due to the rising quality of its competition. Also, its lack of rear passenger space, namely in the head- and legroom departments, is something to consider if you plan to carry a full load of taller adults regularly.

Some other models that you should compare to the Regal include the Acura TLX, which starts a bit higher in price but provides better rear seat accommodations, excellent cargo space and a generous list of standard features. And while you're checking out the TLX, its close cousin, the 2017 Honda Accord, is definitely worth a look as well. Straddling a similar line between standard and luxury cars is the Toyota Avalon. It sports a clean, comfortable cabin design with generous rear passenger accommodations and is powered by a strong yet fuel-efficient V6 engine. And finally, there's the 2017 Lincoln MKZ, another feature-rich entry-level luxury sedan that makes a bold styling statement.

The 2017 Buick Regal comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability control, front seat side-impact airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Rear-seat side airbags are standard on the Premium II and GS. The standard OnStar system includes automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, an emergency button, a stolen vehicle locator and remote door unlock.

The optional Driver Confidence 1 package includes blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert and a frontal collision warning system. The Driver Confidence 2  package adds adaptive cruise control and a more sophisticated frontal collision mitigation system that initiates automatic braking in potential crash situations.

In brake testing, a turbocharged Regal came to a stop from 60 mph in 118 feet, which is shorter than average for a car in this class. A GS with the optional 20-inch summer tires managed to stop in an even shorter 113 feet, although most other sport sedans with summer tires fare even better.

In government crash tests, the Regal received the top five-star rating overall, including four stars for total frontal-impact safety and five stars for total side-impact safety. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Regal its highest score of "Good" in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof-strength crash tests. The Regal's seat and head restraint design was also rated "Good" for whiplash protection in rear impacts.

The 2017 Buick Regal is a midsize sedan that comes in 1SV, Sport Touring, Premium II and GS trim levels.

The base 1SV Regal starts with 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic xenon headlights, foglights, remote keyless entry, heated power mirrors, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, heated front seats, an eight-way power driver seat (with two-way power lumbar), a power, height-adjustable passenger seat (with manual adjustments), split-folding rear seats, a tilt-and-telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Also standard are Buick's IntelliLink infotainment system (with an 8-inch touchscreen), a rearview camera, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, Siri Eyes Free (giving iPhone users voice control over a range of functions via the Bluetooth microphone), Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for enhanced smartphone functionality, a Wi-Fi hot spot with 4G LTE data, OnStar emergency communications, and a seven-speaker audio system with a CD player, satellite radio and two USB ports.

The Sport Touring trim adds a more powerful turbocharged engine and dual exhaust outlets as well as unique 18-inch wheels with black-painted pockets and a rear spoiler.

The Premium II adds front LED signature lighting, rear parking sensors, rear-seat side airbags, keyless entry and push-button ignition, remote start, a heated steering wheel, an eight-way power passenger seat (with two-way power lumbar), a 110-volt power outlet, a navigation system and a nine-speaker Bose audio system.

The range topping Regal GS comes with 19-inch wheels (20-inch wheels with summer tires are optional), unique front and rear fascias, front and rear parking sensors, a sport-tuned suspension with adaptive dampers, two selectable drive modes (influencing suspension, steering and shift calibration), Brembo front brakes, body-color sport rocker panels, an enlarged and configurable gauge-cluster information display, unique pedals, sport front seats and a three-spoke sport steering wheel.

Most of these GS features are exclusive, but the sport-tuned suspension (minus the adaptive dampers) is also specified on non-GS Regals with AWD. Optional on the Premium II and GS are two Driver Confidence packages. The first adds numerous safety technologies (including a blind-spot monitor, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert and forward collision alert) as well as driver memory settings, while the second — which requires the first — adds adaptive cruise control and a forward collision mitigation system with automatic emergency braking.

Stand-alone options, depending on trim, include some of the higher trims' standard features plus a sunroof and 18-inch chrome-clad wheels.

The base 2017 Buick Regal 1SV employs a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 182 horsepower and 172 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. EPA fuel economy ratings, 23 mpg combined (19 city/30 highway), are disappointingly low given the modest output and comparison to the competition.

In testing of a Regal with the 2.4-liter powertrain, we recorded a substandard 0-60-mph time of 9.8 seconds. That's by far the slowest time we've recorded for a midsize sedan, let alone a sedan like the Regal with premium pretensions.

The remaining Regal trims rely on a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 259 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel drive optional. A six-speed automatic transmission is also standard across the board.

The EPA rates the turbocharged Regal at 24 mpg combined (21 city/29 highway) with front-wheel drive and the automatic, and 22 mpg combined (19 city/27 highway) with AWD.

In testing, an all-wheel-drive Regal with the 2.0-liter turbo accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds, which is slower than many choices in this price range. It's also one of the slowest among midsize sedans with an upgraded engine.

When equipped with the optional turbocharged engine, the 2017 Buick Regal provides enough dynamic motivation that you'll likely be satisfied. It might not be the most refined or efficient four-cylinder in this price range, but real-world acceleration is more than ample in most situations. The base model engine doesn't provide any advantages other than small cost savings, so making the upgrade is a good idea.

Engines aside, the Regal delivers with a smooth ride and a remarkably quiet cabin. Models that are equipped with the sport suspension conduct themselves surprisingly well in the corners without much sacrifice in ride comfort — we'd actually call it borderline fun. What perhaps is holding the Regal back most from being engaging is a lack of steering feel. However, it's light and reasonably precise, so most will find it agreeable in casual driving.

With an image portrayed as "sporty luxury," the Regal doesn't excel in either area. But it has a little of both, if you get the right trim.

Inside, the 2017 Buick Regal features a sleek dashboard with minimal button clutter. Although the quality of the materials is satisfactory, the appearance is upscale, if not fully luxury-grade. The standard 8-inch touchscreen powers the IntelliLink infotainment system, which features large icons and Pandora radio compatibility as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. The IntelliLink interface graphics are colorful and sharp, and it uses smartphone-style swipe commands and voice recognition functionality. Buick includes the same screen on every model, as opposed to making you pay more for a premium display as many competitors do.

The Regal's front seats sport firm cushioning but lack a little lateral support. Rear seat passengers might find the back seat relatively cramped, which is surprising given the exterior dimensions. The Regal's elegant sloping roof line is partially to blame, as it cuts into available rear headroom.

Out back, the Regal offers a decent 14.2 cubic feet of trunk space, which is marginally better than some competitors.

The 2017 Buick Regal luxury sedan offers a variety of trims and powertrain options with front- or all-wheel drive (FWD, AWD). Enthusiasts will want the high-performance turbocharged option, although the Regal no longer offers a manual transmission. While the base model’s 2.4-liter engine with 184 horsepower is adequate for everyday driving, its fuel economy is rather dismal. If you want to keep up with traffic, it’s the turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder producing 259 horsepower that gets our nod of approval. Standard on all but the base front-drive trim, this engine develops excellent power throughout the rev band while returning decent fuel-economy figures. While the base Regal’s suspension clearly favors comfort over curves, the GS delivers an agile and responsive performance, especially when combining Buick’s Drive Control system with the available AWD. Despite a stiffer ride, we found the GS’s quiet cabin and comfortable seats make it a good long-distance cruiser.

2.0-LITER TURBOCHARGED 4-CYLINDER ENGINEBuick’s midsize 2017 Regal offers a smooth and efficient 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine big on torque and horsepower. While some may prefer a V6 or V8, we think this engine will win them over with its smooth operation, excellent power delivery and respectable fuel economy.ALL-WHEEL DRIVEAll-wheel drive isn’t just about conquering snow-covered roads; it offers improved handling and cornering in all weather conditions. On the Regal, Buick’s AWD setup not only routes power from front to back, it can also distribute it from side-to-side when needed.

It's important for a premium sedan to coddle its driver and passengers, and here the 2017 Regal family sedan scores very well. The design and materials are all first-rate, and we especially like the easily readable instruments, the available user-friendly navigation system, and the steering-wheel-mounted thumb wheel for scrolling through function menus. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integrate cell phones with IntelliLink, while Siri Eyes Free provides better integration of Apple's voice-recognition technology. The downside is the Regal's rear-seat headroom, with the sleek roofline meaning passengers taller than six feet will likely rub against the headliner.

Buick’s Regal for 2017 remains a classy-looking sedan, thanks in no small part to its European roots, where the same car is called an Opel Insignia. On this side of the pond it wears Buick's signature waterfall grille, flanked by LED-enhanced headlights. The proportions are tidy, but sleek, and the low roofline helps keep the smallish Buick from looking too stubby compared to its competitors. The wheels are pushed out to the corners of the car, giving it a sporty stance, especially with the sporty GS and its standard 19-inch wheels.

Buick’s midsize 2017 Regal sedan comes nicely equipped, from the base model up. There's leather upholstery, and both the 10-way-power driver's seat and 2-way power vertical passenger's seat are heated. Also included are Dual-zone climate control, an 8-inch color touch screen with Buick's IntelliLink infotainment system, a rearview camera, Bluetooth, and a 7-speaker audio system with USB port. On the remaining trims, a 259-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged engine sends power to the wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission (with tap-up/tap-down shifting). Active safety features include GM's StabiliTrak stability control, traction control and anti-lock brakes with brake assist.

The most noteworthy stand-alone option available across the 2017 Buick Regal lineup is all-wheel drive. Otherwise, options are grouped into packages. The Sport Touring adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, a rear spoiler and dual exhaust outlets, while the Premium II package nets keyless entry and push-button start, Bose audio, HID headlights, navigation and a heated steering wheel. Other options include a power sunroof, 18- and 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels (20-inchers on the GS) and a 120-volt outlet. GS and Premium II offer adaptive cruise control and collision-mitigation braking, along with blind-spot, lane-departure and rear cross-traffic alerts.

Standard power for Buick’s midsize 2017 Regal sedan comes from a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine available only on the base front-wheel-drive trim. All other Regal trims get a smooth and refined 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard for all Regal models, regardless of engine, while AWD is optional on the Regal, Premium II and GS. 2.4-liter inline-4 (Regal, FWD) 182 horsepower @ 6,700 rpm 172 lb-ft of torque @ 4,900 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 19/30 mpg 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 (Sport Touring, Regal AWD Premium II) 259 horsepower @ 5,300 rpm 295 lb-ft of torque @ 3,000-4,000 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 21/29 mpg (FWD), 19/27 mpg (AWD) 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 (GS) 259 horsepower @ 5,300 rpm 295 lb-ft of torque @ 2,500-4,000 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 21/29 mpg (FWD), 19/27 mpg (AWD) Note: Due to changes in EPA testing to more effectively reflect real-world conditions, some 2017 models show slightly lower fuel-economy scores than their 2016 versions.

The 2017 Buick Regal Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starts at about $ 28,000 for a base front-drive sedan. The Sport Touring bumps the price up to $ 29,500, while the Premium II starts at $ 32,500. The Regal GS starts at a little over $ 35,000 and all-wheel drive adds roughly $ 2,000 to the bottom line. We think the Premium II offers the best balance between features and price for most buyers, costing thousands less than the Audi A4, on par with the Acura TLX but still more than the Ford Fusion Titanium. To make your best deal, see what others in your area have paid for their Regal by checking the Fair Purchase Price. As for resale, we expect the 2017 Buick Regal to retain its value nearly as well as its Asian and European rivals, and better than some domestic rivals like the Chrysler 200.

2017 Buick Regal Previous Generations

2017 Buick Regal Future Generations

Buick Regal Overview and History

The Buick Regal got totally overhauled in 2017 this including the performance GS variant. The year has started with the brand new Buick Encore micro-crossover being show, and now the GM brand is slightly revising another one of their popular models. Buick Regal was brought back to life in November 2008 in China, with GM officials confirming that an US-bound version was in the works.
Before becoming a trademark of automobile luxury and innovative engineering, Buick was rather fond of plumbing inventions. Born in Arbroath, Scotland, David Dunbar Buick experienced a second-coming to life in his mid 30's when he became particularly interested in gasoline engines. He soon discarded his plumbing-related activities and, by the 1900's, he had already built an impressive number of engines for farming and boating usage. Buick's passion for motors led him to establishing his own company, called Auto-Vim and Power Co.

However, this choice of name lacked the powerful resonance of its founder's name, which was quick to replace it by 1903 - when the company pinned a brand new name tag to its chest: the Buick Manufacturing Co. During the same year, the company's heads went for further simplifying the name by dropping the 'Manufacturing' from the label.

Once corporate identity and appearance issues were satisfactory solved, Buick started focusing on car-engine development. The emphasis Buick put on his work would soon pay back, the genesis of the overhead valve engine having brought the company a generous amount of acclaim.

This was mostly thanks to the positioning of the valves, which allowed Buick engines to be fitted into tighter spaces while granting drivers easy access to maintenance - unlike the majority of the car engines at the time (which sported angle-mounted valves). Although Buick and his top engineering duo, Eugene Richard and Walter L. Marr, were successful in avoiding some major engine-building related intricacies, the brand entered a stage of slow-sales paradox.

Such were the financial difficulties encountered that, by September 1903, David Buick and his financial backer Benjamin Briscoe Jr. sold the firm to a wagon-making group in Flint, Michigan, 60 miles from Detroit (the former headquarters of the Buick factory). Luckily, the Buick plant was moved entirely to Flint, which allowed David Buick, who had been kept as manager, to further focus on his work.

Despite the 1904 construction of the first Flint Buick, the Model B, the by now one-year old Flint-Buick merger was inches away from hitting against the bulk of a metaphorical harassing Mr. Financial Trouble. And it did. The impact left the company with no other alternative than to seek help.

James H. Whiting, manager of the Flint Wagon Works, approached William C. “Billy” Durant, Flint-carriage king and future GM boss, on the company's status. Durant's nose for business as well as his uncanny intuition and promotional skills would later drag Buick from the pits of tar it had fallen into, straight to flashy auto-show glamour, inked front page wows and racing domination.

Although Durant was not a big automobile fan, he immediately recognized the sales-potential of the Buicks. It was the torque and rugged suspension of the cars Buick had built so far that convinced Durant that he had struck gold.

Thanks to the easiness and sturdiness Buicks proved in hill climbing and muddy terrain, Durant ordered a staggering 1000 units before the company had reached the 40 threshold. Though a series of production increase oriented moves, such as the construction of a new Flint-based plant and a partnership with Charles Stewart Mott (axle supplier and future GM head), Durant saved Buick from near extinction.

Durant didn't settle for just ensuring the success of the Buick brand and went farther to conquer racing grounds as well. His team, formed of Louis Chevrolet and Wild Bob Burman (among others), snatched a total of 500 trophies only between 1908 and 1910. The reason to why Buick had so much success was that by 1908 it had become the country's leading automobile producer with 8,820 cars produced. As if this wasn't enough, the new model 10 had topped all the other company's sales, with 4,002 units produced. The success registered by the Buick name grew enough to provide Durant with the grounds for spawning a large holding company. Thus, General Motors was born.

When the 20's came, Buick was numbly bathing in refreshing popularity as it had become the top choice car brand for world leaders. In breaks between garnering acclaim, Buick was busy crossing finish lines and popping champagnes from the height of first-place racing podiums across the world.

In fact, Buick had virtually conquered the world, with automobiles having taken part in major expeditions and crossings, such as the Lowel Thomas-led first motorized trip into Afghanistan, 1923.

However, the end of the 20's brought along not-so-great news, as the Great Depression swept the country, destroying lots of companies in the process. Buick was able to withstand the fund-consuming Depression, having displayed a range of fully rejuvenated models sporting performance Dynaflow automatic transmissions, aircraft inspired portholes, or Ventiports, and renewed style elements such as flashy vertical grilles and meticulously executed finishing touches.

With its growth uninterrupted, Buick continued to hold its position as the all-leading American car producer throughout the 90's with an emphasis on sedans. The Y2K year inoculated a fresh take on the car with Buick extending its activity in developing new convertible and crossover concepts. The reshaping process undergone by Buick has left the company focusing on a new range of automobiles, currently flaunting the three premium LaCrosse, Lucerne and Enclave models.

2017 Buick Regal Consumer Reviews

Sport Touring 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 6A)
Fantastic car for the money
I had to give my wife the Cadillac so I wanted a nice car that was near luxury that was quiet, sporty and comfortable with good gas mileage. The Regal is a great car and I am getting an average of 27 mpg. If you want to get up and go it has the power yet is very comfortable. I had bought a used 2013 Regal and was in a 3 car wrecked. The weight and safety helped me to avoid injury. I bought the 2017 and never looked at anything else.

Premium II 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 6A)
My wife's car now.
Like any vehicle it has feature's that you love and some you like. The Sport is nice looking with no Turbo for better gas mileage. The GS model is fast but doesn't have any eye appeal. I purchased the Sport Touring with the premium II package with a Turbo the best of both world's. However my wife wont let me drive it anymore, Once she realized how many feature's it has and how fast it is. Then she claimed it to be her car. And I hear her spinning the tires when she takes off from a stop light.

Sport Touring 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 6A)
Top-reliability rating &affordable. I'd invest now
Buick's engineering is on the rise. Much more frequent advertising since being listed among the top-reliable cars in 2016-2017 Consumer Reports ratings. Mid-luxury, highly-reliabile quality vehicles at a reasonable cost. Recommend investing now before word gets out and their prices soar.

Sport Touring 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 6A)
Downsized the SUV to a Regal
This car at first I started to say no to. Then once I drove it was so quiet and nice and the acceleration for a 4 cylinder was amazing compared to the Equinox that I was driving before. My only complaint is the storage between the seats. When someone is with me there is no where to put my purse, or my dog who likes to sit on the console. Getting in and out at first was a change for me from a SUV. But if you put the seat in the highest upward position it helps a lot. The trunk is amazing, more room than my suv by far. I would of liked to have the beeping on back up along with the camera, which I had before letting me know I am getting too close. But it gets great gas mileage compared to my 4 cylinder SUV. I average around 26 MPG, with the Equinox I got 21. The leather is nice on the seats, it has a clothed material around the edge to keep the seats from cracking from ware like transitional leather seats. And the inside trim is accented with a nice chrome color. The Touch screen is wonderful also. I have about 7,800 miles on mine so far, acceleration still wonderful on it. Also the AC is nice and cold. I have a White Regal with Black Interior, the AC cools it pretty quickly as July has been a hot month. Also, this car is not for Middle Class and Retirees only. The Regal 11 Sport has power. My teenage daughter Bought a Jeep Cherokee and loves to drive my Regal due to the acceleration and Sun Roof in mine.

"Strong, and reliable."
5 years, zero issues, and still going strong! Very quiet, and comfortable ride. Smooth shifting transmission, top notch AWD system. Definitely worth a test drive if you ever have the chance.
