Can a hatchback have swagger? The 2017 Audi S7 emphatically suggests yes. In addition to breaking with the traditional notion that luxury cars must be sedans, the S7's hatchback body style is also surprisingly stylish. It's also got plenty of substance to go with the style.

Based on the A7, the S7 trades that car's 333-hp six-cylinder engine for a downright potent 450-hp twin-turbo V8, bigger brakes and a tauter suspension. The result is that the S7 has swiftness that's on par with dedicated sports cars.

Despite its level of performance, the S7 demands little sacrifice for its thrills. Sedans can't match its cargo volume. It rides gracefully and has a striking, well-trimmed cabin that's hushed and peaceful. If you somehow manage to exercise restraint with the throttle, it even delivers respectable fuel economy. As a result, it's equally at home on long trips as it is when you want to make an entrance... or a hasty exit.

Germany has no shortage of other V8-powered four-doors to consider. There's the imposing 2017 BMW 650i Gran Coupe, the quietly muscular 2017 Mercedes Benz CLS550. If you absolutely must have a hatchback body style with all-wheel drive like the S7, the only choice is the pricier 2017 Porsche Panamera 4S. The Porsche is the only all-new offering in the bunch, and those that can make the leap will find that it's in a league of its own.

Standard safety equipment on the 2017 Audi S7 includes antilock disc brakes, stability control, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and front knee airbags. Front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, lane keeping assist and a blind-spot warning system are also standard. Rear side airbags and a corner-view camera system are optional.

The standard Audi Pre Sense Basic system warns the driver, pre-tensions the seatbelts and closes the windows if a potential collision is detected, while Pre Sense Rear (also standard) uses the brake light to warn traffic behind the vehicle in the event of a potential rear collision. The optional Audi Pre Sense Plus system (via the Driver Assistance package) can do all that, plus fully tighten the seatbelts and automatically apply the brakes full force to mitigate the severity of an imminent crash.

In brake testing, the S7 stopped from 60 mph in 110 feet, an average stopping distance for a vehicle in this class with summer tires.

The 2017 Audi S7 is a midsize high-performance four-door with a hatchback. Audi has added a second trim level called Prestige to the S7 lineup for 2017. Unlike the A7, which comes in a five-passenger configuration, the S7 comes standard with two individual rear seats, making it a dedicated four-passenger vehicle. Every S7 is equipped with all- wheel drive.

Standard features on the base Premium Plus trim level include 19-inch wheels, full LED exterior lighting (headlights, running lights and taillights), an adaptive air suspension, a sunroof, a power liftgate, heated and auto-dimming mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, a blind-spot warning system and keyless entry and ignition.

Inside, you'll find a driver information center with a 7-inch display between the gauges, Audi Drive Select (providing adjustable settings for steering, suspension and transmission calibrations), diamond-stitched leather upholstery, eight-way power heated front sport seats (with four-way power lumbar adjustment), a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel with wheel-mounted paddle shifters, driver memory settings, four-zone automatic climate control, Audi's Multi Media Interface (MMI) system with console-mounted controls and a central 8-inch display, a rearview camera, a navigation system with voice controls, Siri Eyes Free, Bluetooth, Audi Connect (including enhanced Web-based navigation and information services plus 4G LTE connectivity with mobile Wi-Fi) and a 14-speaker Bose audio system with a CD/DVD player, HD radio and a USB port.

The Prestige trim level adds 20-inch wheels with high- performance summer tires, a head-up display, LED cabin lighting and soft-closing doors.

There are several options packages available for the S7. The Cold Weather package adds heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel that omits the standard flat-bottom design. The Driver Assistance package adds automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control (with stop-and-go functionality), lane keeping assist, a corner-view (front and rear) parking camera system and the Audi Pre Sense Plus collision mitigation system. The Comfort Seating package features "contour" front seats with ventilation and massaging functions, passenger memory settings, comfort rear seats and leather upholstery without diamond stitching.

A Sport package is available on the base trim level that adds variable-ratio steering ("Audi dynamic steering" in Audi-speak), a sport rear differential, red brake calipers and a sport exhaust with black tailpipes. The Black Optic package tacks on special 20-inch wheels (or optional 21-inchers for Prestige), body-color exterior mirrors (instead of the standard silver ones), a blacked-out grille and gloss-black window surrounds.

Individual option highlights include 21-inch wheels for Prestige trim level (20-inch for Premium Plus), a synthetic suede headliner, night vision assist, rear side airbags and a 15-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system.

Also available by special order through the Audi Exclusive program is a large array of custom exterior colors and finishes as well as interior colors and materials. Note that these special orders can add two months or more to the normal post-ordering delivery time.

Under the hood of the 2017 S7 is a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that sends 450 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels. Shifting duties are handled by a seven-speed automated manual transmission (S tronic).

In testing, an identically powered 2016 Audi S7 made the sprint from zero to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds, considerably quicker than most competitors in the segment.

The EPA hasn't released fuel economy numbers for the 2017 Audi S7, but since it is identical to last year's model, we expect it will return the same 21 mpg combined (17 mpg city/27 mpg highway). This is remarkably frugal for such a rapid car.

With 450 hp just itching to be unleashed by your right foot, the 2017 Audi S7 is a thrilling car to drive. Throw in Audi's crisp-shifting automated manual transmission and all-wheel drive, and you've got a terrifically responsive and satisfying powertrain. Its right-now character makes passing maneuvers a breeze.

The S7's standard adaptive air suspension delivers a smooth ride along with capable handling, a deft balancing act that once again sets this Audi apart. Around turns, the S7 can feel like the heavy and sizable sedan it is, but nonetheless it inspires driver confidence in both enthusiastic cornering and evasive maneuvers. In short, few four-door cars can match the S7's broad range of dynamic abilities.

The interior of the S7 is characterized by sleek, handsome design and excellent materials quality, with some S-specific flourishes thrown in for good measure. The standard MMI infotainment system features a dash-mounted pop-up screen and a control dial surrounded by buttons on the center console. The system boasts logical menus, crisp graphics and a touchpad to enhance functionality. Certain rival systems are easier to use, but most shoppers will find Audi's system intuitive after a short time.

The S7 is also equipped with the Audi Connect telematics suite, which includes 4G LTE connectivity, mobile Wi-Fi capability, Google Earth data for the navigation system and simplified Google search functionality for points of interest. The Wi-Fi is a boon for passengers on a long road trip, or if you'd simply like to turn the S7 into a 450-hp mobile workstation. On the other hand, the Google Earth navigation maps can be difficult to read at a glance from behind the wheel.

Whether you stick with the standard sport seats or opt for the massaging contour seats, you'll enjoy excellent support during long trips and spirited back-road runs alike. But due to the S7's aggressively raked roof line, backseat headroom is tight for average-to-tall folks. Legroom is adequate, however, and there's something to be said for the intimate comfort of the twin rear bucket seats versus a traditional three-across bench seat.

The S7's handy hatchback design permits easier loading of larger items that just won't fit in the trunk of a conventional sedan. Official luggage capacity is 24.5 cubic feet, while lowering the rear seatbacks opens up considerably more room.

Even in the "base" A7 with the 333-horsepower supercharged V6, the A7 never lacks for power, proven with its 0-60-mph time of 5.2 seconds. It's a great drivetrain, with the engine providing smooth power at almost any speed, and we do mean any, as this car will easily find you at extra-legal speeds in no time. If you want more, there's the S7, with its 450-horsepower V8, but for the truly power hungry, there's the RS 7, now available in either 560-horsepower or 605-horsepower models. Yet there's so much more to the A7 family than just raw speed. There's the refined steering, the comfortable ride that turns into razor-sharp handling at the flick of the Audi Drive Select button, and the stellar brakes. Yet it's also pure luxury. The interior is a rolling work of art, with soft leathers, a sculpted dash and comfortable seating for everyone.

INTERIOR REFINEMENTAudi's well-earned reputation for interior quality is on display in the A7. Everything you touch feels good to your hands, from the knurled dials for the audio and climate controls, to the leather steering wheel. The 8-inch display that rises from the center dash when you start the car? Pure sci-fi cool.GOOGLE NAVIGATIONBuilt-in navigation is great, but a lot of people prefer the accuracy of their smartphones. However, the A7 actually comes with Google Earth and traffic, making it every bit as up-to-date and accurate as your smartphone. It can even do Google Street View thanks to 4G TLE connectivity.

There's so much to like inside the Audi A7 it's hard to know where to start. There are high-quality materials, like standard leather seating, with an upgrade to diamond-stitched higher-quality hides in S7 and RS 7 models. The A7 seats five, but the S7 and RS 7 seat four because of the pair of contoured rear seats instead of a 3-person bench. Thanks to the standard 8-way-power/4-way-lumbar adjustment and power-operated steering-wheel adjustment, it's easy for drivers of various shapes and sizes to be comfortable. And, in a nod to practicality, the A7 is a hatchback, with plenty of cargo space.

Ever since its debut in 2012, the A7's fastback shape has been a defining element. Sure, beauty is subjective, but most agree this is a fine-looking car from virtually any angle. Audi calls it a "sedan," but a rear power-operated hatch makes it a hatchback. It offers easy access to the cargo area with its 24.5 cubic feet of space. Models are visually distinguished through exterior styling, with the higher-performing S7 boasting its own front and rear bumper design, and the almighty RS 7 featuring a carbon-fiber splitter and diffusor. All models include a sunroof and electric rear spoiler.

With a base price of about $ 70,000, and an Audi badge on the nose, you'd expect even the base A7 to come nicely equipped. With standard features like a supercharged V6 engine, 4-zone climate control, an interior awash in leather and wood, and heated 8-way-power front seats, you'd be right. Also standard on the 2017 A7 is navigation, a rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring (Audi calls it "side assist”), and a 10-speaker AM/FM/CD player with satellite and HD Radio with two USB ports. Newly standard this year is Audi connect and Audi smartphone interface, both of which enhance your smartphone ownership experience.

There's a long list of options for the Audi A7 lineup, not the least of which is choosing among A7, S7 and RS 7. Beyond that there are massaging front seats with ventilation, and an available fighter-jet-style head-up display that projects pertinent driver information onto the windshield. The new Driver Assistance package adds active lane assist, adaptive cruise control, corner-view cameras and a host of other technology, including Audi pre sense plus, which applies the brakes to avoid or lessen the impact of a frontal collision. A new A7 Competition model adds more power and better handling.

There are five different versions of three engines available for the 2017 A7 family. The A7 itself comes with a 333-horsepower supercharged 3.0-liter V6; the A7 Competition offers 340 horsepower. Audi S7 models come with a turbocharged 4.0-liter 450-horsepower V8 engine. As an RS 7, that twin-turbo V8 delivers 560 horsepower, and 605 horsepower in the RS 7 Performance model. Every Audi A7 and RS 7 comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and quattro AWD is also standard; the S7 comes with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. But don't worry, none of these cars is a slouch, with even the "base" A7 scooting to 60 mph from a standstill in just over five seconds.3.0-liter supercharged V6 (A7) 333 horsepower @ 5,300-6,500 rpm 325 lb-ft of torque @ 2,900-5,300 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 21/29 mpg 3.0-liter supercharged V6 (A7 Competition) 340 horsepower @ 5,300-6,500 rpm 325 lb-ft of torque @ 2,900-5,300 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 21/29 mpg 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 (S7) 450 horsepower @ 5,500-6,400 rpm 406 lb-ft of torque @ 1,400-5,700 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/27 mpg 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 (RS 7) 560 horsepower @ 5,700-6,600 rpm 516 lb-ft of torque @ 1,750-5,500 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 15/25 mpg 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 (RS 7) 605 horsepower @ 6,100-6,800 rpm 516 lb-ft of torque @ 1,750-6,000 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 15/25 mpg  Note: Due to changes in EPA testing to more effectively reflect real-world conditions, some 2017 models show slightly lower fuel-economy scores than their 2016 versions.

The Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for a base 2017 Audi A7 starts just below $ 70,000; add $ 7,500 for the new Competition model. The higher-performance S7 starts at just over the $ 80,000 mark. If that's not enough, the Audi RS 7 starts at about $ 111,600, and the uber RS 7 Performance will run you $ 130,500. Note that's all before adding options; start checking those boxes and the price escalates quickly. The 2017 A7 splits the difference between the CLS-Class 4-door coupe on the low end and the BMW 640i Gran Coupe on the high end. Before buying, be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others are paying for their new A7. The A7's residual value has traditionally held up better than those of its Mercedes and BMW rivals.

Audi S7 Overview and History

Shower gels and generally beauty-product brands have a way of appealing to customers by thrusting desire through sensorial-related names and presentation of their offers. Olfactory sense-stroking balms and soothing cashmere-touch night cream-approaches are basically the most commonly used methods of conveying beauty and easy customer-access to deeply-rooted sensorial pampering, unless beauty is forged out of steel and thousands of accurately engineered parts.

Automobiles undoubtedly fall into the latter category, and what better way of striking at least one of the remaining three senses if not building an image of a mighty engine roar or purr of a loyal cylinder sextet cradled under the bonnet of an Audi car? Audi translates as 'listen' from latin and besides expressing an unanimously accepted passion of the motorist, that of listening to the engine as if it were a never before heard dissertation on mechanics blended with boisterous 'deux ex machina' comments and demonstrations, it also marks the birth of Audi following Horch's demise, the previous name of the company that can be traced back to 1899.

Its founder, August Horch was forced out of his own company in 1909 due to trademark infringements, 8 years after the first automobile had rolled out the gates of the plant in Zwickau, Germany. After having been dispensed of, Horch started his own company under the same name which led to a fair share of trouble that came to an end as soon as Horch called for a meeting at the apartment of Franz Fikentscher to discuss the matter and come up with a new name for the company. Franz's son who was studying latin at the time was the true deliverer of the name that would later became synonymous with luxury and quality. As 'Horch' means listen in Old German, the boy simply made a switched the name with its latin corespondent, 'audi', sparking enthusiasm into the 'audience' that quickly adopted the name.

Audi's start o the German market was high lighted by the appearance of 2.6 liter engine powered vehicles followed by a series of more powerful ones, such as 4.7 L and the gas-gulping 5.7 L. Having gotten to see his company grow wings, Horch left in in 1920, four years before Audi's first 6 cylinder model was built. In 19128, Audi was acquired By Jorgen Rasmussen, owner of rival company DKW.

A few years later, a merger between Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer occurred and thus, the Auto Union was formed in 1932. Those times called for a new badge and the four interlocked rings were born as a sign of unity and identity of the newly formed auto-conglomerate. Technological improvement became a top priority that first took shape during the Second World War when an armored car was produced for the German Army.

However, all the progress would soon be severely slowed down and even halted at times due to heavy bombings. Moreover, as as soon as the conflict had come to an end, Zwickau had been caught in the soviet occupation zone that would become The German Democratic Republic in 1949. Not only that the company's activity was in jeopardy but the Auto Union had also broken up and the Union had to be restarted n new grounds, in Ingolstadt, Bavaria.

Though sluggish at first, the newly Ingolstadt based factory would attract many of the former workers and the construction of two-stroke engines would be resumed in a way similar to that of Zwickau. By 1958, Daimler-Benz had already acquired a whopping 87% of the Auto Union but its investment quickly became property of Volkswagen, the company having bought the factory and  and the brands in 1964.

Soon after the change of ownership, two-stroke engines would be eliminated in favor of the more popular and more customer appealing four-stroke ones. DKW, the leading brand of the Union at the time failed as a brand despite of the changes  it had made and Volkswagen decided to resurrect Audi. The former DKW built model was rebranded as an Audi one and was the springboard for the make of later models such as the 60, 75 and 80.

After a second merger with the Stuttgart based car-producer NSU by 1970, Audi established itself as a reliable growing brand that would later break the German boundaries and expand to new markets, including the North American one where it encountered difficulties following the release of a biased report that portrayed the car as suffering form 'unintended acceleration'. This was caused by the close placement of the brake and acceleration pedals, right next to each other. Shortly after the report was released , an abrupt decline in sales was registered that was countered only years later with the 1996 release of the A4 model.

Joining a row of successful car-producers, Audi has also garnered acclaim on the racing track with several World Record holdings, including one for Top Speed Endurance. Audi is currently enjoying a privileged position and large market share and is predicted to reach the production threshold of 1 million units by the end of this year.

2017 Audi S7 Consumer Reviews

Premum Plus quattro 4dr Sedan AWD (4.0L 8cyl Turbo 7AM)
Stealth Performer
This is a beautiful looking and performing 4 door sedan. Acceleration is effortless especially with the twin clutch transmission. The S version is the way to go with every Audi model. S7 sport package option is a must to maximize performance and black optics package provides a more aggressive look.

Sleek, glamorous, sporty, fast and faster.
Buying a slightly used S7, or any luxury high-performance vehicle is the way to go. The Audi S7 is the perfect spot for me. What a head-turner sport-back/hatchback! It has the power to get me into or out of freeway fast moving traffic, It has the famed Audi gorgeous interior, it has comfort galore, and it has the looks that won’t grow old quickly and will keep me loving my car for a long time. Here are things I hope Audi will improve: The cruise control lever and the turn signal lever are on the same side, very near each other. Inevitably, you’ll hit the wrong one, too many times. Ugh! The auto-engine on/off gas-saver, when the car stops is slow to come on. You really shouldn’t have to think about it, but you do, or you might get honked at.

2016 Audi S7
"Stunning Performance with Style"
I’ve owed the car for 2 years. I live in NorthEast Ohio. We get all kinds of weather; hot summers, a wet fall and harsh winters. The Audi S7 never disappoints. The sport’s differential is a must. The dual clutch transmission coupled with the rearend makes you smile as the car seems to LITERALLY anticipate the turns. You will always be in a great position if you want to lay down power to the Quattro AWD system. The car is glued to the ground. I use summer performance and winter dedicated tries. 21” for summer and 20” for winter. I love the inferred camera and B&O speakers. The car is packed with tech. Oh, and then there’s just the raw power whenever you want! Car was ~$ 106,000 with all the options. I think all boxes were checked off :) The 2016 S7 should have been designed with acoustic rear windows! No Apple car play in 2016. The powered windows are a little slow. Too many steps to get into launch mode. Also the break dust is horrific but they sure are impressive breaks! Despite the negatives, the car will make you smile GUARANTEED! You also get better valet spots (no surprise) and lots of compliments and looks. Would move to a 2020 S7 but those are coming with the V6. The V8 is the only way!
