The 2015 Kia Rio is a solid pick for a small sedan or hatchback. It's not quite as refined as some class-leading rivals, but it might still win you over with its inviting cabin, strong engine performance and excellent value.

Just because a car is small and inexpensive doesn't mean you have to sacrifice features, style or the ability to cart about some friends. The proof of that can be seen everywhere you look in the subcompact car segment, with numerous desirable models working hard to erase the negative memories often associated with this historically crummy vehicle segment. With the 2015 Rio, Kia certainly is doing its part. The agreeable Rio stands out with its generous features list, surprisingly roomy interior and grown-up styling inside and out.

"Grown-up" really would be the optimum expression to describe the Rio. Its exterior is notably European in appearance, with the sedan in particular avoiding the awkward proportions of its competitors. And although the base LX trim is rather bare-bones, the EX and SX step things up considerably with higher-quality interior materials and near-luxury levels of equipment that are sure to make you forget that you're in such a small car. Plus, even when loaded up with things like heated leather seats, navigation and all of the entertainment features you could hope for, the Rio's MSRP just nudges above $ 21,000. That may seem like a lot for a small car, but if you prioritize getting the most equipment for your money (rather than size), the Rio is quite the bargain.

If it sounds as if we're fans of the Kia Rio, it's because we are. However, this little Kia's biggest drawback is that it lacks the sophisticated driving manners found in other top small cars, like the Chevrolet Sonic, 2015 Ford Fiesta and 2015 Honda Fit. They offer more composed rides and more engaging handling. The Rio's fuel economy also trails that of most competitors (although 31 mpg combined is still pretty thrifty), and no subcompact comes close to matching the Fit's interior space and versatility. Overall, the Rio is a solid offering for this class and worth a look, especially if getting a lot of features for the money is a priority.

The 2015 Kia Rio is a subcompact car available as a sedan or as a hatchback known as the Rio five-door. Both are available in LX, EX and SX trim levels.

The base LX comes standard with 15-inch steel wheels, heated power mirrors, air-conditioning, a tilt-only steering wheel, a height-adjustable driver seat, a 60/40-split-folding rear seat and a four-speaker sound system with a CD player, an auxiliary audio jack, a USB audio jack and satellite radio. The Power package (requires the optional automatic transmission) adds power windows and locks, and keyless entry.

The EX includes the Power package and also adds cruise control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, upgraded cloth upholstery, center console storage and armrest, Bluetooth phone connectivity and two additional speakers. The Convenience package adds 15-inch alloy wheels, a rearview camera, automatic headlights, foglights, power-folding mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, upgraded interior materials and the UVO electronics interface, which includes a small touchscreen control interface, voice controls, iPod control and Bluetooth audio connectivity. The Eco package adds a fuel-saving automatic stop-start system.

The Rio SX includes the Convenience package items plus 17-inch alloy wheels, LED taillights and running lights, dual exhaust tips, steering-wheel-mounted transmission paddle shifters and metal-trimmed pedals. The Premium package adds a sunroof, keyless ignition and entry, leather upholstery, heated front seats and a navigation system that brings with it a larger touchscreen interface and real-time traffic. It also deletes UVO.

Every 2015 Kia Rio comes with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine good for 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the LX. A six-speed automatic is optional on that trim and standard on the rest. In testing, a Rio SX sedan went from zero to 60 mph in 9.4 seconds, which is a full second quicker than average for the segment.

EPA-estimated fuel economy rings up at 31 mpg combined (27 city/37 highway) with both available transmissions. This is average fuel economy for the segment, but a few competitors are even thriftier.

The Eco package adds an auto stop-start system that shuts the engine down when the car comes to a stop and restarts it when the driver lifts off the brake. But having it increases fuel economy by only 1 mpg in the city -- the combined and highway EPA figures remain the same.

Every 2015 Kia Rio comes standard with four-wheel antilock disc brakes, stability control, hill start assist, front side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. A rearview camera is optional on the EX and standard on the SX. In brake testing, an SX came to a stop from 60 mph in 124 feet, which is average for the segment.

In government crash testing, the Rio received four out of five stars for overall crash protection with four stars for total frontal and rollover protection and five stars for total side protection. Testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety was a mixed bag. It received the top score of "Good" in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset impact and roof-strength tests, as well as a "Good" for its seat and head restraint design (for whiplash protection). However, the Rio received the second-best rating of "Acceptable" for side-impact protection and a "Marginal" rating (the third of four possible scores) in the IIHS' small-overlap frontal-offset test.

As we've tested only SX versions of the Kia Rio, these impressions pertain mostly to that trim, which provides larger wheels and tires and firmer suspension tuning than the LX and EX models. The Rio SX is competent around turns, but it's definitely not the best handling car in this class. In addition, the Kia's ride is choppy bordering on harsh, depending on the condition of the pavement. If a softer ride is important to you, the EX is likely a better bet. If you're looking for a small car that feels a little more sophisticated in the way it rides and handles, the Sonic and Fiesta are worth a test-drive.

The 2015 Kia Rio's 1.6-liter four-cylinder is one of the more powerful engines in this class, and overall, acceleration is impressive for a subcompact. The engine gets a bit noisy during hard acceleration, and that, along with considerable amounts of wind and tire noise (with the SX's 17-inch wheels and tires), keeps the cabin from feeling serene.

The 2015 Kia Rio's cabin has a restrained yet stylish look. The materials quality is nothing special in the base LX, but the added soft-touch surfaces, armrest cushioning and tasteful metallic accents found in the upper trims make the Rio's cabin one of the finest in the subcompact segment. We highly encourage you to go that extra mile to get an EX or SX, especially since they come with a truly impressive amount of additional equipment.

The Rio scores well in the areas of space and comfort. Even tall drivers should be comfortable behind the tilt-and-telescoping wheel (EX and SX models), while the backseat offers a competitive amount of space. It's the same story farther back, as the sedan has a generous 13.7-cubic-foot trunk. The hatchback is only a little bigger (14.9 cubic feet), but for maximum hauling potential the hatchback is still a good bet since folding the rear seats opens up 49.8 cubic feet of capacity, a good number for this class. Notably, the rear seats in all Rios are split 60/40 and fold completely flat.

Economy cars are a natural in the city but don't usually perform all that well on long highway expanses, but in testing the Kia Rio on such roads it surprised us with peppy acceleration, a stable ride and a quiet interior. Steering feel hasn't traditionally been a strong point in Kia vehicles, even the more expensive models with the adjustable Flex Steer system. But in the Rio, the steering is nicely weighted, making it easy to keep this subcompact car stable between the lines even as semi-trucks rolled by. We also must give kudos to the little 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine, which is eager to put its 138 horsepower to good use and plays exceedingly well when paired with the 6-speed automatic transmission. The Rio especially excels around town, where its small size makes it easy to park and maneuver. In spirited driving, the Rio is fairly agile, but not as fun as a Mazda2 or Fiesta.

LEATHER INTERIOR WITH HEATED FRONT SEATSRemember when leather was reserved for upscale cars? Now it can be had in entry-level vehicles like this least-expensive of Kias. In addition to being suppler than cloth, these optional seats can also warm your tush on those cold winter mornings with their heated functionality.ONBOARD NAVIGATIONGood luck finding a base-model, factory-installed navigation unit as good as this one, if you can find one at all. The Rio's nav system is just another positive aspect of Kia's impressive UVO infotainment system.

Not surprising for an entry-level sedan and hatchback whose price ranges from under $ 15,000 to over $ 20,000, the Rio's 5-passenger cabin varies from rather plain to rather impressive. The least-expensive models are that way because you'll still be cranking your own windows and foregoing a telescoping steering wheel. Higher-end models, though, look the part of a premium vehicle thanks to a slick 7-inch touch-screen command system, leather trim and a power sunroof. Rear legroom is tight, but every Rio has a 60/40-split folding rear seat for extra cargo. This really helps in the Rio 5-door hatchback, which boasts nearly 50 cubic feet of space with seats folded.

The 2015 Kia Rio comes in two forms: 4-door sedan or 5-door hatchback. Both are small cars, but the hatchback is the smaller of the pair at over a foot shorter (wheelbase remains the same at 101.2 inches). Both are pleasing to the eye, with the Kia Rio sedan looking like a smaller version of the stylish Optima and the Rio hatch more like a baby sibling to the Sportage crossoverSUV. Wheels range from 15 to 17 inches, and top-line SX models feature dual exhaust outlets and a surprise: power-folding side mirrors that tuck into the car when it's parked and locked.

The Kia Rio comes in three trims: LX, EX and SX. The LX has an appealing sub-$ 15,000 price, but part of the cost cutting means you're stuck with manual windows, a manual transmission (the optional automatic costs $ 1,240), and only a tilt-adjust steering wheel. It does include air conditioning, a 4-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo with USB input and 6-way adjustable driver's seat. If your budget allows, we recommend stepping up to the EX trim, which adds power windows/doorlocks, Bluetooth phone connectivity, a telescoping steering wheel and cruise control. Top-line SX models come with the 7-inch touch screen UVO infotainment system, a rearview camera, a sport-tuned suspension, paddle shifters, and LED positioning lights.

Major upgrades for this subcompact Kia sedan and hatchback come in the form of packages for the EX and SX models. The EX offers the Convenience Package with a rearview camera, the UVO infotainment system and power-folding exterior mirrors, as well as an Eco Package offering Idle Stop & Go, which idles the engine when the car is not moving to save fuel. Top-line SX models can be further upgraded with the Premium Package that bundles leather seating (heated in front), a power sunroof, and push-button start. Individual options for all trims include an auto-dimming rearview and, on sedans, a rear spoiler.

All versions of the 2015 Kia Rio are powered by a 138-horsepower 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine. Base models come with a 6-speed manual transmission, while the two higher trims are fitted with the more popular 6-speed automatic. All Kia Rio models are front-wheel drive and run on regular unleaded gasoline. At 27 mpg city/37 mpg highway, the Rio's fuel economy is good but not the best in this segment. EX models can be had with the Idle Stop & Go feature that cuts the engine at stoplights, but at a price of $ 1,200 and an improvement of only one mpg in city driving, it would take many miles to pencil out, if ever.1.6-liter inline-4138 horsepower @ 6,300 rpm123 lb-ft of torque @ 4,850 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 27/37 mpg, 28/37 mpg (Eco model with Idle Stop & Go)

The 2015 Kia Rio sedan and 5-door hatchback have a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting at an appealing $ 14,700 – lower than its cousin, the Hyundai Accent. An automatic transmission in a base Rio lifts the price to just under $ 16,000, which makes the $ 17,740 Rio EX even more tempting since the car includes so much more (see Notable Standard Equipment). Top-trim SX models begin just under $ 19,000 and top $ 21,000 with options. Among rivals, only the Nissan Versa Note, Ford Fiesta and Chevrolet Sonic have sub-$ 15,000 starting prices, and for the Fiesta and Sonic, that's the sedan versions only. As you climb trims, the Rio's price is comparable to rivals. Before buying, check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others are paying. On the resale front, the Rio is expected to be on par with the Sonic and Accent, but trail the Versa Note, Toyota Yaris and Scion xD.

Kia Rio Overview and History

Kia sounds surprisingly playful for a car manufacturer's name and as the brand's tag line reads, they really are all about the power to surprise. In fact, the Korean car builder has done so from its very inception in 1944 when it began as a steel tubing and bicycle parts producer. Six years later, Kia would reveal Korea's first bike.

Once the first step was made, Kia rushed through the process of developing light means of transport, such as scooters and fast forwarded through motorcycle building upon the point of reaching the necessary resources and experience to start building cars. The whole conversion process took Kia about two and a half decades to complete.

Bigger, richer and propelled by the enthrallment of having their own car brand, Kia poured a considerable amount of cash into a plant to accommodate its assembly lines.  By 1973, the new facility at Sohari saw completion, becoming Korea's first of its kind. Fully integrated and equipped with the latest cutting, bolting and welding machinery, the plant ulteriorly became the womb in which Kore's first internal-combustion gasoline engine would develop. The first Kia built car was unveiled one year later, a medium passenger car named Brisa.

Kia's sounding debut and modern technology caught the eye of different foreign producers(e.g. Peugeot and Fiat) with whom it partnered to house production of some of their models such as Peugeot's 604 and Fiat's 132.

By the 80's Kia had expanded to almost the size of its main competitor, Hyundai who was still the no. 1 Korean producer. Some of Kia's newer models at the time were rebadged and marketed abroad such as the Pride which sold overseas as the Ford Festiva. Only a few years later, Ford would manifest interest in the Avella, a subcompact car available in a 5-door hatchback version and a 4-dour sedan powered by either a 1.3 or a 1.5 liter engine. The Avella was rebadged as the Ford Aspire on the North American market.

The Korean manufacturer had not yet reached US shores on its own but it was only a few strokes away. In 1992, the brand was incorporated into the US and timidly started business through a tiny four-dealership network that sold its first vehicles in 1994. Ever since, Kia has been methodically expanding, reaching every state except north Dakota.

The main selling point of Kia cars was its affordability which was later supplemented by Kia's expansion into other market segments through the introduction of their first sport utility vehicle in 1995, the Sportage. From that point on, Kia suffered a fate very similar to that of Hyundai, company it would  later blend into due to unsuccessful management of financial difficulties.

Trouble began in the late '90 when the company became stagnant and thus unable to rollout new models. That's when Hyundai came into play. The major Korean car-builder got rid of  competition by means of merger. Both companies have experienced trouble and low sales due to reliability complaints over their vehicles.

The somewhat bland styling was not exactly what buyers were looking for in a car either so both had to undergo costly restructuring stages. Kia found itself rejuvenated by 2001 when, following its owner's example, it started working on a new vehicle line-up with an emphasis on quality and long-warranty offerings. Ever since, Kia has been steadily conquering segments of the European market, especially through the Cee'd, Sorento and Rio models. The development of newer, bolder designs is also among Kia's priorities, predating a future line-up with the announcement of concepts such as the Soul, unveiled at the Montreal auto show in 2006 and the Kee, a fresh coupe boasting strongly appealing style elements.

SX 4dr Sedan (1.6L 4cyl 6A)
Poor Fuel Economy
Sticker Stated a Fuel Economy rating of 38 HWY, 28 City. I commute 55 miles ad roundtrip to work on the Freeway. I calculate my mileage at each fill up. I am luck to get 29 - 30 MPG HWY, and 19 - 20 MPG CITY. The dealer states that there is nothing they can do to help me.

2013 Kia Rio
"MPG is awful for a car that small"
When I fill up my Kia Rio EX (2013) the range displayed is always over 330 miles. I ran it down to fumes and got about 240. The mpg is nowhere near 30+ mpg. The range will drop from 60 miles left to a flashing yellow light. Of course, by the time you realize this - it is far too late to do anything. I had a "sensor" problem - car would not start. Wiggle the shift until it realizes it IS in park to start. Left me stranded. Dealer "adjusted" sensor - same problem came back - I had to demand a new sensor - defective parts were covered, but not "adjustments". The sensor was defective - after replacement - car starts fine.

"Reliable is this car's middle name"
Extremely reliable 2014 Kia Rio. I have owned this since it had 40,000 miles on it and I have not had a single mechanical issue with it. AC and heat work well, as well as all the tech. I've even managed to average over 48 mpg on it on the highway a few times despite the vehicle being fully loaded.
