The 2013 Volvo C30 can't quite match the performance thrills of other sporty hatchbacks, nor can it match the base price of other stylish hatchbacks. Nevertheless, it's a solid alternative to both.

Stylish two-door hatchbacks are de rigueur nowadays, with names like Beetle, Fiat and Mini. As it turns out, you can have fun and economical transportation wrapped in a cool, distinctive package. Yet one more car that deserves to be noticed among these hip choices is the 2013 Volvo C30. Though it's been around for a couple years, this clever two-door hatch still looks and feels as fresh and modern as the day it was introduced. Maybe it's because you don't see many out on the road, but that just means people have been missing out on a good thing.

The C30 is unmistakable on the road thanks to the nifty all-glass hatch that harkens back to past Volvo hatchbacks. The two-passenger backseat is another interesting touch, featuring a pair of individual bucket seats that are nearly as sumptuous and supportive as those up front. Compared to those aforementioned stylish two-door hatchbacks, the Volvo C30 is far more welcoming to its passengers.

Unfortunately, pricing happens to be the C30's biggest drawback. There's no base model, so the 2013 Volvo C30 is in the same price range as sporty models like the Fiat 500 Abarth, Mini Cooper S and VW Beetle Turbo, as well as the Ford Focus ST. And against this bunch, the C30 is a bit outmatched from a performance standpoint. But in most other respects, this stylish two-door hatchback definitely deserves to be noticed.

The 2013 Volvo C30 is a compact two-door hatchback that seats four people. There are two models: T5 and the sportier T5 R-Design. Both are broken into base, Premier, Premier Plus and Platinum sub-trims.

Standard equipment on the base T5 includes 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights with washers, automatic wipers, cruise control, air-conditioning, a height-adjustable driver seat, a leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, cloth upholstery, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, and an eight-speaker sound system with a CD player, HD radio, an auxiliary audio jack and an iPod/USB audio interface. The R-Design models differ with a sport-tuned suspension, 18-inch wheels, unique styling elements inside and out, foglamps and cloth/leather upholstery.

The Premier sub-trims add to the base models a sunroof, an eight-way power driver seat, driver memory functions and a cargo area cover. The R-Design version also gets an auto-dimming mirror.

The Premier Plus sub-trims add adaptive bi-xenon headlights, LED running lights, keyless ignition/entry and an eight-way power passenger seat.

The Platinum sub-trims add a navigation system, satellite radio and a 10-speaker surround-sound audio system.

All trims are eligible for a number of options, including a blind-spot warning system and satellite radio. The Climate package adds heated front seats, automatic climate control and an interior air quality filter.

Every 2013 Volvo C30 is powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder that produces 227 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission are standard; a five-speed automatic is optional.

In performance testing, a manual-equipped C30 went from zero to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds, which is average for a sporty compact hatchback. The automatic was a bit slower at 6.9 seconds. EPA-estimated fuel economy with the automatic is 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined. The manual barely differs at 21/29/24.

Every 2013 Volvo C30 comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and front seats with whiplash protection. A blind-spot warning system is optional. In brake testing, a C30 came to a stop from 60 mph in 130 feet, which is a little below average performance.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the C30 the highest possible rating of "Good" in the frontal-offset, side and roof strength crash tests.

The 2013 Volvo C30 is a fun car to drive, boasting ample grip through corners and accurate steering. The R-Design model generates the most smiles with its extra rubber and sport-tuned suspension. Regardless of model, though, the C30 is more comfort-oriented than its rivals, with every control and motion feeling just a bit more damped and relaxed. Sport hatches like the Mini Cooper S may be more entertaining to drive, but the C30's smoother ride and quieter cabin will be appreciated on your daily commute.

The C30's turbocharged engine is sweet regardless of where you're driving. There's a nice snarl to the noises it makes, and its low-end torque plants you nicely in the pleasantly sculpted seats. The manual transmission features long, spongy throws but is reasonably precise. The automatic transmission is a bit behind the times with its five gears and lack of paddle shifters.

The C30 might be getting on in years, but its cabin still remains stylish and modern. Its prime attribute is the floating center stack that is sharply dressed in one of several distinct trim types and complemented with simple controls. Well, they're simple with the exception of the old-fashioned navigation system. Thankfully exorcised from other Volvos, this system features weird controls behind the steering wheel, a remote control for the passenger, subpar graphics and confusing menus.

As is typical for Volvo, the front seats draw praise in terms of comfort, support and adjustability -- even with standard manual adjustment. The steering wheel further helps to accommodate drivers of all sizes by telescoping a surprising amount (the Swedes are big, you know). Volvo didn't even try to design a rear seat that could hold three passengers. Instead, the rear cabin area features two seats that closely resemble those up front, albeit closer together. They are quite comfortable, though legroom is a bit short.

Rearward visibility is excellent thanks to the tall and wide all-glass hatch. Cargo capacity behind that hatch is disappointing, though. There are only 13 cubic feet with the rear seats raised and, when lowered, the total is less than competitors as well.

The 2013 Volvo C30 is quick, but not blazingly fast. Still, with a stated 0-60 mph acceleration time of about 6.5 seconds, the C30 has absolutely no problem getting up to speed on the freeway. What the C30 really has going for it is a solid, planted, and ultimately safe feel that belies its small size. In base T5 form, the front-wheel-drive C30 offers bigger-car comfort, while the R-Design model has a tighter suspension for better cornering. Power level is the same for both models, though either can be boosted with the available Polestar Performance upgrade, which tunes the engine to 250 horsepower for noticeably more sizzle. Both models have a pleasingly quiet cabin. The seating position is comfortable, but for some people, the seatbelts have a tendency to creep up. Outward sightlines are among the best.

EXCEPTIONAL OUTWARD VISIBILITYThe C30's rear window looks great from the outside, and it's even better from within. Thanks to that long panel of glass flowing down the hatch, this Volvo provides astounding rearward visibility.TURBOCHARGED ENGINEA turbocharged 2.5-liter 5-cylinder engine gives the C30 a great balance of performance and efficiency, falling neatly between a smaller 4-cylinder and a larger 6-cylinder. And the turbocharger responds with almost no throttle lag.

If you've been in any recent Volvo, the C30's cabin will be instantly familiar. It's functional yet stylish, looking as sleek and angular as anything from an IKEA store. Two-tone leather seating is available, which helps give the C30 a premium look. R-Design models get extra garnishments like aluminum inlays and logos on the seats and steering wheel. In back are two – but only two – sculpted seats, roomy enough for adults. Behind the rear seats is 12.9 cubic feet of storage, which expands to over 20 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

A squat profile, deep curves, angular front and beautifully contoured rear make the Volvo C30 a car that looks truly one-of-a-kind. Its defining feature is the lovely panel of rear glass stretching halfway down the car and differentiating it from all other hatchbacks. The window allows exceptional visibility outward, but also lets onlookers peer in, so owners would do well to keep valuables covered in the cargo bay. R-Design models get identifying cues such as a rear spoiler, larger exhaust tips and a smattering of logos. Base models have 17-inch wheels while R-Design editions roll on 18-inchers.

All 2013 Volvo C30 models come with a 6-speed manual transmission, cruise control and a 160-watt/6-speaker audio system with AM/FM/HD Radio, CD player and auxiliary/iPod/USB inputs. Also standard are steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, Bluetooth wireless connectivity with audio streaming, and – deep breath – a pollen filter. All current Volvos are backed by a 5-year/50,000-mile basic warranty and complimentary maintenance for three years/36,000 miles.

The new Premier package on the 2013 Volvo C30 adds a sunroof, power-adjustable driver's seat and cargo-area cover. Premier Plus brings power adjustability for the passenger seat, dual xenon headlights and LED running lights. The top-line Platinum package has a 10-speaker/650-watt premium sound system and navigation system with real-time traffic. Additional options include a 5-speed automatic transmission, climate package, blind-spot monitoring system, and the power-bumping Polestar Performance Package.

All Volvo C30s are powered by a turbocharged 5-cylinder inline engine that makes 227 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque across a wide rpm range. This means the car's power is readily available any time, and there is plenty of it. The standard 6-speed manual transmission has precise, if rather long, shift throws. The optional 5-speed automatic works well but lacks paddle shifters. Unlike many cars with turbocharged engines, this one can run on regular-grade gasoline. For drivers who want more power, the dealer-installed Polestar Performance Package retunes the engine to make 250 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. Gloriously, the Polestar performance boost does not affect rated fuel economy, emissions or warranty coverage.2.5-liter turbocharged inline-5227 horsepower @ 5,000 rpm236 lb-ft of torque @ 1,500-5,000 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 21/29 mpg (manual), 21/30 mpg (automatic)Note: The dealer-installed Polestar Performance Package increases the C30 engine output to 250 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. The fuel economy figures are not affected.

The 2013 Volvo C30 T5 has a starting Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 26,395, while the R-Design model starts at $ 28,745. Loading up a C30 T5 R-Design with the Platinum package and other options can push the price past $ 36,000. The Polestar retro-fit tuning upgrade, which boosts horsepower from 227 to 250, adds $ 1,295 to any C30 configuration. The C30's base price undercuts the Audi A3 and Lexus CT 200h, and comes in higher than a Volkswagen GTI, Mazdaspeed3 and Mini Cooper Clubman. Be sure to check 's Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying for the Volvo C30. Over time, the C30 is expected to retain its resale value well, comparable to an A3, but not as strong as a VW GTI or Mini Cooper Clubman.

Volvo C30 Overview and History

Volvo introduced the new C30 generation at the 2009 Frankfurt International Auto Show.
AB Volvo is a world-leading Swedish manufacturer of commercial vehicles, trucks, buses and construction equipment, drive systems for marine and industrial applications, aerospace components and financial services. But it did start out as a car manufacturer, founded by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larsson. The main purpose of the company was to produce the safest cars possible, following the death of Assar's wife in a car crash. The automaker was founded April 14, 1927 in the city of Gothenburg, as a spin-off from roller ball bearing maker SKF (Svenska Kullagerfabriken AB).

The name Volvo was originally registered in May 1915 as a separate company within SKF AB and as a registered trademark with the intention to be used for a special series of ball bearing, but this idea was only used for a short period of time and SKF decided to use "SKF" as the trademark for all its bearing products. Volvo AB began to function on the 10th of August 1926 when the SKF Sales Manager Assar Gabrielsson and Engineer Gustav Larson, started production of 10 prototypes and set up the car-manufacturing business Volvo AB within SKF group. Volvo AB was introduced at the Stockholm stock exchange in 1935 and SKF then decided to sell its shares in the company.

The first series produced Volvo automobile, called 'ÖV4' left the factory on 14 April 1927. Just 996 cars were produced between 1927-1929. 'ÖV4' was replaced by model PV651 in April 1929. Its success on the market helped Volvo buy out their engine manufacturer and thus become a serious car producer. By 1931, it was already returning its first dividend to shareholders.

After it reached a production milestone of 10,000 cars in May 1932, Volvo then targeted a new demographic segment, aiming to make their cars cheaper, a car “for the people”. This was going to be the PV 51 which came out in 1936 which was a smaller version of the PV36.

The PV444 was one of the most significant cars of the war era, the first true small car, a mixture of American flair and European size, it would become a resonant success and the best sold model throughout the 60s. The P1800 was Volvo's first sports car, made in the early 60s and it was so popular that it was featured in the hit TV series “The Saint” starring Roger Moore.

Safety and quality were still paramount for Volvo and that's why the 240 series which replaced the 140 had even more safety innovations in that department, like crumple zones, rear facing child seats and collapsible steering columns. Together with the smaller 340 models, they would make for most of the sales during the 70s and 80s for Volvo.

The 90s brought with them a totally new model, the 850, a front-wheel drive, executive car which won numerous awards for handling and safety features. By now, productions costs were mounting up and Volvo was one of the few independent producers out there, after a proposed deal with Renault fell through in 1993. This forced the company to seek new marketing strategies and that's how the sleeker S40 and V40 models were introduced in the factory's production line.

The new models brought a breath of fresh air, just like the C70 coupe and convertible, which are responsible for revitalizing the Volvo image while keeping in tune with the old tradition of safety and quality.

The buyout of Volvo Cars was announced on January 28, 1998. Until then, Volvo Cars was owned by AB Volvo (the commercial vehicles group). In the following year acquisition for Volvo Cars by American car maker Ford Motor Co. was completed at a price of $ 6.45 billion USD. Volvo used the funds from the sale of the automobile division to finance the purchase of Scania, another leading Swedish truck manufacturer, but the deal was stopped for competition reasons by the European Union. Instead Volvo acquired the commercial vehicles division of French Renault and the American truck manufacturer Mack Trucks (which was owned by Renault at the time). As part of the arangement to buy Renault Trucks, the former parent company, Renault, bought in turn 20 percent in shares in AB Volvo. Among the reasons why Volvo took the initiative to sell the automobile manufacturing was the increasing development costs for new car models, coupled with the fact that it was a relatively small producer. The strategy was instead to grow as a truck manufacturer where it had a stronger market position.

Volvo Automotive's motto is "Volvo for life" attributed to the reliability and safety of their cars. Volvo means "I roll" in Latin. Combined with their company symbol, (commonly mistaken for the male symbol) which actually stands for iron ore and according to the company, represents "Rolling Strength".

T5 2dr Hatchback (2.5L 5cyl Turbo 6M)
C30: rare, beautiful, comfortable
This is really a lovely car. We purchased the last '13 new in July'14. Auto trans, T-5. Did TONS of research beforehand. We are a Toyota/Honda family, so European is a departure, with trepidation. We have the Premier Plus package, not R-Design. Thus far, the car is beyond expectations; a joy to drive, beautiful to look at, and well made. It's QUIET inside, very powerful, and so different. You won't see them often, which is nice too. It's not a high performance hatch, and that's good, because we didn't want that. For those w/o kids, and a different hauling vehicle, this is a great commuter that spoils with luxury, is safe, and gives you confidence. 2017 update; a couple of warranted replacement items with the car; though it continues to be great, and has cool accessories you can get from Volvo. We had some repairs from hitting a curb and major hail damage. After a few trials the rattles and squeaks were eliminated. But it took a few times. Hopefully once warranty expires we won't eat crow. Only complaint is the doors don't have good detents so they fall back into your legs pretty easily. That's it. Dealer support has been beyond expectations. It's sleeper fast.

T5 2dr Hatchback (2.5L 5cyl Turbo 6M)
LOVE this car!!
I flew across the country to buy a certified preowned 2013 last year. It has the 6-speed manual (deal breaker for me without). I drove all the way from Little Rock, AR to Durango, CO in one day. I have never spent a 17 hour day in a car and not had a backache until I did so in this vehicle. The car is an absolute pleasure to drive! Takes off like a rocket ship, but I still manage 35-40 mpg. (I live in a rural area, mostly hwy driving.) I have already put 20k miles on it without any problems, but I am only at 38k total. I have also been very impressed with any Volvo service experience I have had thus far. I have a friend that is absolutely in love with her GTI, but I find my C30 to handle much better and be much more comfortable, albeit a bit smaller. I love that it is a very unique car; you just don't see too many of them on the road. It's very sharp looking car, IMO!

T5 R-Design 2dr Hatchback (2.5L 5cyl Turbo 6M)
I won’t get rid of it
I love this car. I have looked for one for years the way I wanted it optioned. I got a great deal on my r-design with the six speed manual polestar upgrade. It had everything I wanted and no navigation :) I have had it for a year and it’s my first Volvo. I’m sold we bought an r-design XC90 6 months after this one. The build quality is great. Very solid and substantial is the best way to describe it. I just rolled over 93k and no issues. I have a squeak in the back when it’s cold but that’s been it. The seats are comfy and the bi zenon head lights are the best I’ve ever had in any car hands down. I wish I had reverse parking sensors though. It really moves when you put your foot down. I find it an excellent compromise for warning speed, handling and comfort. I do a lot of maintenance myself and it’s a little bit more for fluids and air filters but a few bucks is well worth it. I get the compliments others talk about on here. Sometimes even stopped at a light now and again. This is one car I will not get rid of. It’ll be here in the garage for as long as I can see. It’s truly functional and so unique. I’d buy it all over again any day of the week. It’s made a Volvo family out of us.

Style and Substance
Have owned for 3 weeks now, and the smiles keep coming. This car is very well put together, looks great, handles well, and has plenty of power on tap when you need it. It is very comfortable as a daily commuter, even with the stiffer R-Design suspension. As other reviews across the web have stated, the steering is a bit numb and the manual shift action a bit rubbery compared to other sport coupes/"hot hatches", but it makes up for it with how well the overall package fits together. This is a car that somehow seems greater than the sum of it's parts. Hard to explain.

2013 Volvo C30
"Perfect car for me"
I wasn't that into hatchbacks for the longest time, and i remember this car when it came out.. I wasn't blown away, but i took notice.. Now...? I think its the freshest approach to coupes in a long time. I've always had 2 door cars and love them, had a bmw 325ci (e46) before this and liked everything about it except the reliability.. Both cars are tremendously fun to drive.. And both are beautiful cars, but I've fallen in love with the look of specifically this hatchback. I especially love that it looks like a normal car from the front and front 1/4 views, and of course looks like a hatchback from the rest. But the C30 car is everything that the e46 BMW 3 is not. Reliable, turbo charged, and a hatchback. I will also say that there is a significant torque increase with the turbo charged T5 engine... and, even stock, the growl of the 5-cylinder is impressive.. even when you're not punching it, the sounds of a spooling turbo are always present as well.. Handles really well, very minimal creaking during hard turns, and a pretty smooth ride in all other circumstances. Excellent grip, and performance with early boost from the turbo and a responsive throttle.. Fuel consumption is somewhere between average to good, by today's standards.. And you'll need to get 91 octane fuel in order to get the full horsepower listed on the specs, otherwise you can still use 87 all the same and just take a small performance loss. Lastly, this car was made during the time Ford owned Volvo, so parts are very available and for very reasonable prices, with multiple manufacturers offering parts in almost any category. A surprising number of parts seem to work interchangeably with certain ford focus parts as well, as this car shares the chassis with a focus and some other hatchback during this time.. (forget which) and there are a vast number of performance, aftermarket bolt-on upgrades for this car, if that's your thing.. even a Polestar factory software upgrade, essentially a stage 1 tune, that doesn't change any of the car's fuel economy, or require any different parts.. but gives a 25hp increase and something like 25-50 lb/ft of torque. I like this car a lot, i'd recommend it. I read some of the reviews and thought someone who isn't super complain'y needed to chime in and keep it real.. ha

"A sweet little ride....."
When I bought this car, I was looking for a smaller vehicle that was economical with great gas mileage but a safe vehicle. Having driven a Volvo previously, I liked the handling of the cars and safety record. I love the C30 R-Type edition! Great gas mileage. Great Handling. Everyone who sees it admires it. I rarely carry passengers which is the only downside to the car. Difficult to get into the back seat. Most of the time, I have the seats down and ample hauling area in the hatchback.

This sucker has a Polestar tune, bumping total output to a whopping 250bhp. She scoots, but she breaks once every few months. Oh and the stereo is bangin.
