Aside from its capability as a light-duty off-road vehicle, the 2012 Suzuki Grand Vitara is outclassed by most other compact SUVs on the market.

Standing out in the competitive compact crossover SUV market is no easy task. In this segment, style, utility, the latest convenience features, favorable fuel economy and a reasonable price are all expected. Unfortunately, the 2012 Suzuki Grand Vitara doesn't do as good a job meeting these criteria as its competition.

In some aspects, the Grand Vitara still holds appeal. Standard features include automatic climate control and a navigation system; those are usually optional extras for a small crossover. The Suzuki further distinguishes itself with a decent amount of off-road capability and a generous 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

But even these perks can't overcome the Grand Vitara's primary drawback, namely, a weak four-cylinder engine that struggles to either propel it with any authority or achieve top fuel-economy numbers. As of last year, the V6 engine option is no longer available. Points are also deducted for the Grand Vitara's unrefined ride quality.

With this in mind, we think shoppers will likely be happier with one of the many other top-rated compact SUVs. Right in the Suzuki's price range are the Hyundai Tucson and related Kia Sportage --  both are top picks on our list and outclass the Grand Vitara in most respects. The stalwart Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 (both are redesigned this year) are also highly recommended, though they will end up costing a few thousand dollars more than the Suzuki.

The 2012 Suzuki Grand Vitara is a compact crossover SUV that is offered in four trim levels: base, Premium, Ultimate Adventure Edition and Limited. Standard features for the base model include 16-inch steel wheels, automatic headlights, keyless entry, automatic climate control, full power accessories, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-only steering wheel, a trip computer, an integrated Garmin navigation system (includes voice commands, real-time traffic and a Google search function) and a four-speaker sound system with a CD player and an auxiliary audio jack.

The midrange Premium trim level includes all of the base model's features and adds rear privacy glass, heated mirrors (4WD models only) and cruise control. Optional on four-wheel-drive models are 16-inch alloy wheels. The new Ultimate Adventure Edition adds 18-inch alloy wheels, foglights, integrated turn signal mirrors, heated front seats, water-resistant seat upholstery and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The range-topping Limited model will get you a sunroof, roof rack side rails, a tailgate mounted spare tire (other models receive a tire inflator), keyless ignition/entry, leather upholstery and a seven-speaker premium sound system. Bluetooth is optional on all but the base models.

The 2012 Suzuki Grand Vitara is powered by a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder that produces 166 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on base models, while all other versions get a four-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is standard across the lineup, but every trim level except base is offered with four-wheel drive. On the Limited, the four-wheel-drive system includes low-range gearing.

In performance testing, a rear-drive Grand Vitara required 10.2 seconds to reach 60 mph, a slow time for this segment. EPA estimates for the Grand Vitara's fuel economy are less than the best. Rear-drive models return an estimated 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined, while 4WD models return 19/23/20.

Standard safety features on the 2012 Suzuki Grand Vitara include stability control, traction control, antilock disc brakes, full-length side curtain airbags and front-seat side airbags. In brake testing, the Grand Vitara needed only 110 feet to stop from 60 mph -- extraordinary performance for this type of vehicle.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Grand Vitara its highest rating of "Good" in the frontal-offset test and the second-highest rating of "Acceptable" for side impact and roof strength tests.

While the 2012 Suzuki Grand Vitara makes a decent choice for commuting and daily errands, a somewhat unrefined ride quality and firm seats can become tiresome on longer trips. The cabin is relatively quiet except at highway speeds, where road noise becomes an issue. The four-cylinder engine only adds to the din as it noisily struggles to move the Grand Vitara with any level of authority. Handling doesn't feel nearly as stable as the compact crossovers from Honda and Kia, and the overall ride quality isn't as carlike.

The Grand Vitara's five-passenger interior is attractive, but looks a bit outdated compared to recently refreshed cabins of its competitors. Gauges and controls are well-placed and easy to read, with the exception of the removable navigation system, which requires a bit of a reach. The navigation screen is also quite a bit smaller than built-in units, making it harder to operate and read.

Though there's a decent amount of room to stretch out here, the Limited model's leather upholstery is actually not as comfortable as the cloth upholstery of the seats in the base and Premium versions. One other notable shortcoming here is the lack of storage for small items like cell phones and MP3 players. Schlepping larger items shouldn't present any problems, however, thanks to a cargo hold with 69 cubic feet of space with the 60/40-split rear seats folded down. That said, the rear door, which is hinged on the passenger side, can complicate curbside loading and unloading.

Suzuki's Grand Vitara is a suitable partner for short commutes or longer journeys that involve off-pavement excursions. The GV's integrated unit body and strong ladder frame create a solid platform, and its independent suspension feels well-controlled. Athletic it's not, and with only one engine option good for just 166 horsepower, it's near the bottom of its class in terms of power output. Technically the Mazda CX-5 has less horsepower but, unlike the Grand Vitara, that small SUV is a hoot to drive. The GV does have precise steering and a relatively tight turning radius of 36 feet, which means better access to parking spaces and less of those embarrassing 3-way turns. One of the Grand Vitara's few high points is the 4-mode 4-wheel-drive system in top-of-the-line models. The system makes the SUV suitable for rolling over snow, mud and rocks.

4-MODE FULL-TIME 4WDAvailable only on the highest-trim (and thus most expensive) version of the Grand Vitara, this system stands out among the current crop of small SUVs and "soft-roaders" because it has low-range gearing. Low-range gearing is usually reserved for serious off-road vehicles, as it helps them traverse steep, rugged terrain.NAVIGATION SYSTEMEvery trim level of the Grand Vitara comes with an integrated touch-screen navigation system that also relays traffic information, gas prices, flight times and other useful, up-to-the-minute information.

The 2012 Grand Vitara has a pleasant, functional interior that can seat up to five in its two rows. The cabin is not overly exciting, but neither is it complicated. Large dials make it easy to turn up the air conditioning or dial down the volume when that annoying commercial comes on the radio. Cloth seating is standard, with leather available in Limited versions. Hard plastic remains, but gauges and dials are easy to read. Fold-and-tumble rear seats help create plenty of space for groceries or for hauling home that flat-screen TV.

Suzuki's Grand Vitara has traditional SUV looks: Boxy, confident and exuding strength. The vehicle's sharp angles stand in contrast to the curvy looks of modern crossovers, but still hold up relatively well in the half-dozen years it's been since the GV was redesigned. The vehicle features 7.4 inches of ground clearance, decent for off-roading but well short of the 8.7 inches found on the Subaru Forester. An old-fashioned swing-out rear door can make loading cargo a hassle if parked in a tight space. Base and Premium models come with 16-inch wheels, while Limited versions ride on larger 18-inchers that help sharpen the vehicle's handling.

The biggest surprise about the 2012 Grand Vitara is that even base models come with a touch-screen navigation system that is an asset for not just finding the best route to your destination, but for obtaining movie times, the weather forecast and more. All GVs also come with automatic climate control, automatic head lights, keyless entry and 4-speaker AM/FM/CD/satellite radio. All new Suzuki autos come with a transferable 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

Most options for the Grand Vitara are bundled with trim levels. Premium trim models add cruise control, Bluetooth and available full-time 4-wheel drive. Top-of-the-line Grand Vitaras in Limited trim have a power sunroof, leather seats, premium 7-speaker audio system with subwoofer and 18-inch wheels. Limited models are the only versions available with the 4-mode 4-wheel drive system.

Since dropping the V6 option after the 2010 model year, the Grand Vitara retains just one engine choice: A 2.4-liter 4-cylinder with 166 horsepower; this engine is now among the least-powerful in the segment and further shows its age by being connected to a 4-speed automatic transmission. Base models are linked to a 5-speed manual transmission that earns a respectable 26 mpg on the highway.2.4-liter inline-4166 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm162 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 19/26 (RWD, manual), 19/25 (RWD, automatic), 19/23 (4WD, automatic)

A base 2012 Suzuki Grand Vitara with rear-wheel-drive and manual transmission starts around $ 20,500. A top-of-the-line Limited model with 4-wheel-drive and a few accessories can reach over $ 27,000. At these prices the Grand Vitara is competitive, but not the screaming deal it used to be. The base Subaru Forester and the Mazda CX-5, for a couple of examples, are only about $ 1,000 more. The ever-popular and better-equipped Honda CR-V starts just over $ 23,000, as does the Toyota RAV-4. The Kia Sportage, meanwhile, undercuts the Grand Vitara with a base price of just over $ 19,000, as does the Hyundai Tucson with a base price just under $ 20,000. Be sure to check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to see what buyers in your area are paying for the Suzuki Grand Vitara. Down the road, the Grand Vitara's resale value is among the lowest in this segment.

Suzuki Grand Vitara Overview and History

Michio Suzuki, the founder of the Suzuki company, started pretty much like Toyota, in the textile industry, producing automated looms in 1909 in a small seacoast village called Hamamatsu. For years, his company was successful, but as time passed, Suzuki realized that he will have to diversify if he wanted to stay in business.

He turned to car making and in 1937 started developing a prototype. Unlike Toyota, who chose to copy an American six-cylinder engine, Suzuki created their own model, a four-cylinder version which put out 13 horsepower. But as WWII began, production of passenger cars became a luxury so Suzuki turned back to loom-making to support Japan's new cotton industry. All that stopped when the market crashed in 1951.

Versatile and ingenious, Suzuki now turned to making engines for bicycles. Unlike other engines that could be mounted to bikes, his motors had a unique feature that allowed the rider to pedal assisted by the engine or completely disconnect the pedals. This captured the attention of the government who granted funds to Suzuki for research.

During the 50s Suzuki released several models: in 1955 the Suzulight SS, a-2 door sedan, the Suzulight SD, a 2-door wagon, the SL – a 3 door sedan and the SP, a pick-up. Out of all of them, the SP proved to be the most successful, being mass-produced and improved during the 60s. Good sales for the SP which was regarded asa commercial type of vehicle, meant that in 1960 the Suzulight Van, the TL, was introduced. Other models from the 60s include the small Suzuki Fronte 360 and the Suzuki Fronte 500.

The famous off-road Jimny came in 1970, which had several variations of chassis and engine. The other cars from the 70s are the Cervo, Alto and the Fronte, also with a number of variations and improvements along the years.

As the 80s rolled in, Suzuki began expanding across the ocean, thanks to a business agreement with GM (in 1981) which gave them an important niche in the western market. Also, they began a partnership with the Indian car company Maruti in 1983 to produce cars there. A year later, in 1984, Suzuki Motor GmbH Deutchland opens up its doors in Heppenheim, Germany.

The Swift and the Vitara models were introduced in the late 80s and Suzuki reached a production of 10 million units. During the 90s, the company continued to expand with factories all over the world and several other 4x4 models were introduced. Right now, Suzuki is listed as being the 12th biggest automotive manufacturer in the world with 35 production facilities all over the Globe and being present in 192 countries.

not much wrong with this compact suv, much less than others larger ones in price, geared a little low for 1st, handlling good great turning radius for tight spots, if you haven't owned a small suv before give careful consideration, it's not gonna handle like a sports car at highway speeds. Great for around town and trips, could have used another 2" length in the cargo area. Great body style, lots of safety features, a good value for the price.

"Not a single problem!"
I bought this used with 120,000 miles and have put over 30,000 miles on it in 3 years. The only repair I've had was replacing brake pads. Last time I took it to my mechanic he said he was amazed at how clean the engine is, not a single oil leak! Great visibility and AWD traction!

Most reliable and fantastic car I have ever owned! Have only had to perform oil changes and maintenance on this car and it has 90,000 miles on it. Car can be driven for many more miles as well, as it is still runs great. Hardware inside car is very reliable as well. I would give this car a 10 out of 10! If they still made Suzuki automobiles, I would be purchasing another one!
