The 2011 Chevy Colorado suffers from an aging design and lags behind the competition in passenger comfort and overall refinement.

Both generations of Chevrolet's previous S10 compact pickup were sold for a decade or more. That's how things went in the truck segment. Unfortunately the little Chevys didn't exactly age gracefully, growing stale and losing popularity to fresher, more sophisticated compact pickup rivals as well as more powerful larger trucks that sold especially well in an era of low gas prices. Despite rising fuel costs and an increased interest in more efficient vehicles in the last few years, the 2011 Chevrolet Colorado seems to be on track for a repeat performance.

Now entering its eighth year of production since it was first introduced, the Chevrolet Colorado carries over into 2011 with many of its original strengths and weaknesses intact. On the positive side, it's still an affordable and handsome truck that's offered in many different permutations, including three body styles, three different engines and several trim levels. Though the Colorado was initially criticized for a lack of power from its inline-5 engine compared to the V6s of the competition, a brawny 300-horsepower V8 was added to the lineup two years ago.

So far then, the 2011 Chevrolet Colorado looks pretty appealing with respect to the big picture. But the details look less rosy once you get up close and step inside. The utilitarian cabin hasn't changed much since the Colorado's debut, and lots of cheap plastic trim underwhelms the senses. Once underway, the Colorado's busy ride and noisy atmosphere on the highway provide more evidence of arrested development.

Among competing small trucks, only the 2011 Ford Ranger is more dated so we'll give the nod to the Colorado in that match-up. Otherwise, be sure to check out the 2011 Nissan Frontier and 2011 Toyota Tacoma, two competitors that exceed the Colorado in most respects. And even if you're a value shopper, late-model used versions of those trucks might also be worth considering. Either way, if a well-rounded and refined compact or midsize pickup is what you're after, we suggest you keep looking.

The 2011 Chevrolet Colorado is a compact/midsize pickup offered in three body styles: regular cab, extended cab (with small rear access doors) and crew cab (with four regular doors). Crew cabs are equipped with shorter, 5-foot cargo boxes, while other models feature a 6-foot box. The Colorado is offered in either a basic Work Truck or a premium LT trim, with the latter coming in 1LT, 2LT and 3LT subsets tailored to particular needs. Colorados are available in two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive versions.

Work Trucks come standard with a front split-bench seat, air-conditioning, cruise control, OnStar and an AM/FM stereo. The 1LT adds 16-inch alloy wheels, privacy glass, deluxe cloth upholstery and upgraded audio with a CD/MP3 player and satellite radio. The 2LT trim includes 17-inch alloy wheels, a sliding rear window, chrome exterior trim and full power accessories. 3LT models add 18-inch alloys and front bucket seats with a floor console. Colorado options include assist steps, chrome accessories, a towing package, and for crew cabs, leather-trimmed upholstery and power/heated front seats.

A Z71 Off-Road package that offers more ground clearance and larger tires/wheels is available with both powertrains, and also includes skid plates and a locking rear differential on 4WD models. The ZQ8 Sport suspension puts the emphasis on sharper handling and greater control on pavement with a lowered, stiffer suspension, quicker steering and 18-inch wheels with performance tires.

The 2011 Chevy Colorado offers a range of engines including an inline-4, inline-5 and a V8. On Work Trucks and LT1 models, the standard engine is a 2.9-liter four-cylinder that makes 185 hp and 190 pound-feet of torque. Optional on those trims and standard on the 2LT is a 3.7-liter five-cylinder that produces 242 hp and 242 lb-ft of torque. Colorado 3LT trucks come with a 5.3-liter V8 generating 300 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. The V8 is also offered as an option on most 1LT and 2LT variants.

A five-speed manual transmission is standard on most four-cylinder Colorados, with a four-speed automatic optional; the five-cylinder and V8 engines are equipped only with the automatic. Four-wheel-drive models feature a two-speed InstaTrac transfer case with dash-mounted controls.

EPA estimated fuel economy ranges from 18 mpg city/25 mpg highway and 21 combined on four-cylinder 2WD regular cabs down to 14 mpg city/19 mpg highway and 16 mpg combined on V8 4WD crew cabs. A properly equipped V8-powered Colorado can tow up to 6,000 pounds.

The 2011 Colorado comes standard with OnStar, antilock brakes, stability control, traction control and side curtain airbags.

The Colorado has not been rated using the government's new, more strenuous 2011 crash testing procedures. However, its 2010 ratings (which aren't comparable to the new methodology) for the crew cab were a perfect five stars for frontal-impact crash tests and three stars for the driver and five stars for the rear passengers in side-impact testing.

In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing, an extended-cab Colorado received a top-ranked score of "Good" for frontal-offset collisions. However, the crew cab model received a second-best "Acceptable" ranking for the same test and a worst "Poor" rating for side-impact protection.

The 2011 Chevrolet Colorado's smaller four- and five-cylinder engines are smooth enough, but the level of performance and hauling capacity fall short of those offered by the competition's V6s. The V8 makes up for this deficit, and its impressive power provides strong acceleration, albeit at the expense of fuel economy. The Colorado's four-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly, but can't match the sophistication of five-speed gearing found in competing automatics.

The Colorado is reasonably quiet around town, but noticeable wind and road noise enter the cabin at higher cruising speeds. The standard suspension offers a satisfactory ride and handling trade-off for a small truck, though it can be bouncy at times. Those with more focused needs will be well-served by the added control and performance of the optional off-road and sport suspension packages.

One of the Colorado's major weaknesses continues to be the quality of its cabin furnishings. While rivals have gotten more refined over the years, the Colorado carries on with mediocre materials, lots of hard plastic trim and barely adequate seat comfort and support.

The layout of controls and instruments is simple and straightforward, with lots of room up front. However, passengers in the back of rear-seat models are likely to experience awkward ingress and egress through the small door openings, and cramped legroom once inside.

Cargo carrying is aided by a two-position tailgate that can rest partially open to help support construction materials stacked on the wheelwells.

The Colorado's greatest strengths can be found in its chassis and powertrains. The body-on-frame chassis provides a rigid platform helping eliminate rattles and shake. You can feel it in the way the Colorado handles off-road and in the corners. Even over washboard roads, the Colorado exhibited no sign of dash-rattling or squeaks. Chevrolet has also created a number of performance and off-road packages that enhance the Colorado's rugged image. Surprisingly, for such a small truck, the Colorado has a rather wide turning circle. The standard in-line four-cylinder is fairly potent for such a small engine. When ordered with the manual transmission, it also offers exceptionally good fuel economy.

Tailgate The Colorado's rear tailgate can be set at a 55-degree angle so that items can rest flat on the tops of the wheel wells and align with the tailgate. Side Curtain AirbagsStandard side curtain airbags are an important safety feature worth having.

The 2011 Chevrolet Colorado's interior layout is highly functional, with all the gauges and controls in clear sight and easy reach of the driver. The seats offer firm bottoms and good lumbar support, and the cloth fabric is both durable and comfortable. Crew Cab models are a bit tight when it comes to rear-seat legroom, but front seat occupants should be more than satisfied. The one drawback may be the over-abundance of gray throughout the cab. Chevrolet recently revamped the interior color scheme to lessen this mass of gray plastic, but the most vivid improvements show up only in the pricier trim levels.

The Colorado definitely has the look that says "Chevy." Bulging fender flares and bright alloy wheels punctuate tall slab sides. Regular Cab models ride on a 111.3-inch wheelbase while Extended and Crew Cab models are on a 126.0-inch wheelbase. The bed length for the Regular and Extended Cab models is roughly six feet, while that for the Crew Cab model is about five feet. Both beds feature tall sidewalls, for deeper storage, which give the Colorado best-in-class cargo volume. The Colorado has a clever tailgate that can be opened flat or set at a 55-degree angle, effectively placing the top of the gate in line with the tops of the rear wheel wells, which makes it easy to load and carry, for example, large, flat panels.

The Colorado LS features a five-speed manual transmission, 2.9-liter four-cylinder engine, air conditioning, cruise control, anti-lock brakes (ABS), side curtain airbags, stability control, tilt steering wheel, dual outside mirrors, automatic headlamps, carpeting, AM/FM stereo, XM Satellite Radio, tachometer and forward-facing jump seats in the Extended Cab. The LT trim adds chrome front and rear bumpers, Deluxe Cloth upholstery, CD player and leather-wrapped steering wheel. To that the Z71 adds the Z71 off-road suspension, auto-dimming mirror, rear sliding window and the 3.7-liter five-cylinder engine.

Options include four-wheel drive, four-speed automatic transmission, power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, heated leather seats, automatic locking rear differential, tow package, 16, 17 and 18-inch wheel options, six-disc CD changer, traction control, Z71 off-road package, the ZQ8 performance package (18-inch wheels, sport suspension and 5.3-liter V8 engine) and Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity.

Engine choices for the Colorado include four- and five-cylinder powerplants, as well as a V8 engine on the LT trims. The standard 2.9-liter four- and the optional 3.7-liter five-cylinder engines might seem small, but they are both big on power. The 2.9-liter four-cylinder produces an impressive 185 horsepower and offers up most of its 190 pound-feet of torque between the ranges of 1,200 and 5,600 rpm. That's enough power to muscle any lightly-equipped four-wheel-drive vehicle through the toughest terrain. The optional 3.7-liter engine makes 242 horsepower. Both of these engines produce class-leading horsepower while returning good fuel economy. The big 5.3-liter V8 is powerful but not easy on gas and is best ordered only when towing is a priority.2.9-liter in-line 4185 horsepower @ 5600 rpm190 lb.-ft. of torque @ 2800 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 18/25 (2WD), 18/24 (4WD, manual), 17/23 (4WD, automatic)3.7-liter in-line 5242 horsepower @ 5600 rpm242 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4600 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/23 (2WD), 17/23 (4WD), 16/21 (4WD, Crew Cab)5.3-liter V8300 horsepower @ 5200 rpm320 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4000 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 14/20 (2WD), 14/19 (4WD)

The Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the 2011 Chevrolet Colorado ranges from just under $ 18,000 for a LS Regular Cab to about $ 24,500 for a Crew Cab LT. A fully loaded LT Crew Cab with four-wheel drive tops out at close to $ 34,000, while the base Regular Cab model can be loaded with options and still remain around $ 21,000. To help make your best deal, be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price. It shows what the Colorado is typically selling for in your area, a valuable piece of information when negotiating. As for resale potential, the Colorado falls far short of the values held by the Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier. Kelley Blue Book expects the Colorado to retain less-than-average residual values. However, the Colorado matches the projected residual values of the Ford Ranger.

Chevrolet Colorado Overview and History

Chevrolet is the auto equivalent of a gene-boosted steroid-pumped feline. The ferocious cat was groomed by Swiss born racing driver Louis Chevrolet and business whiz Buick resurrector and former GM head William Durant, as a joint venture that started in 1910. Shortly after Durant was forced out of GM, he partnered with Chevrolet, whom he had previously employed at his Buick racing team, to regain the popularity he had lost.

The Chevy headquarters was set in Detroit and the newly formed brand was baptized, receiving its famous “bowtie” logo in 1913. There are several hypotheses as to how the logo design came to be, two of them being the closest to unanimous acceptance. One of the theories hints at the logo having been designed after a poster Durant had seen in a French hotel while the second claims the “bowtie” is actually a stylized representation of the Swiss flag cross.

No matter how it originated, the golden Chevy logo persisted. In fact, the brand grew at such a fast pace that it allowed Durant to regain ownership of GM in 1916. After having become wealthy enough, Durant bought a smashing 54.5 percent of GM's shares, reinstating himself as head of the auto empire.

Soon after the takeover, Chevrolet was absorbed into GM, becoming a separate division. Having gained even more strength after the merger, the newly formed entity was quick in starting off production and launched the model D in 1918. The V8 35 hp engines fitted on these cars were replaced by smaller 6 cylinder ones, that proved particularly successful on commercial vehicles. The engine gained reputation due to its high durability and earned the “cast iron wonder” nickname.

Only a few years later, Chevy revealed the SUV in its archaic form: the Suburban Carryall. Sporting rough terrain riding capabilities, seating for 8 and weighing around 1½ tons, it marked the beginning of Chevy's future SUV line-up.

The American producer continued its successful innovations streak by introducing the Powerglide transmission in 1950, becoming the first low-price competitor to equip its vehicles with automatic shifting. Shortly after the introduction of the fully automatic transmission, the legendary Corvette was born.

The Vette had such a good reception that it remained the longest running Chevy model in the brand's history, having also been the first American sports car to enter mass production. The Vette also premiered the usage of lightweight construction materials for the car's body, like plastic, at that time.

Following the acclaim garnered by the Vette's release, Chevy launched several other models, including the flashy Impala and the short lived air-cooled Corvair. During the 60's, Chevy reached its sales peak with 3 cars out of any 10 sold in the US. However, before such a performance was achieved, Chevy designed a new small-block V8 engine used to equip its '55 truck range.

This particular engine made it till today, going through plenty of modifications in the process ranging from lightweight, durable aluminum construction to ECU managed control and modern fuel injection for better dosage and increased power.

Although Chevy has been registering lower sales in the past few years due to uncontrolled brand extension, some of the “bowtie” emblazoned automobiles have become either cult classics or vintage collectibles, four wheeled icons as reminders of a past age of glory.

Nice Truck !!!
1600 miles on it and quite satisfied so far. I pulled a small pop-up trailer less than 100 miles and I was very impressed by the trailering aspects of the vehicle. The gas mileage was 14.5 per gal on the round trip. In summary good value, good looking black truck.

Expect about 10 years life
I bought the truck new in 2011. Regular cab 1 Lt 4X4 Currently the frame rails have rust up and down them. I expect the rust to eat through the thin frame rails in less than 10 years from now. My 99 Dakota has thicker frame rails and also more black paint on them.

Very Dissapointed
After having 2 friends buying colorados and the good review i went and bought a new one in august 2011. I just bought the lt1 2wd with auto trans. For first month everything was great. Then when starting truck it would spit and sputter until it made this weird vacuum noise. took to dealer and they put new parts on and still didnt help. Then my turn signal switch started messing up. Last but not least when starting it makes a bad chain dragging noise that we have yet to figure out. this happened with less then 4k miles and i keep extra good care of my vehicles. Looking to trade in for a import truck. my 95z28 with 130k miles has no problems. but a new truck has a lot. I wouldnt buy again.

2007 Chevrolet Colorado Regular Cab
"Good, but consistently had problems"
I loved my truck. It went through three crazy drivers in my family before coming to me, went through a major accident and who knows how many fender benders. I always felt safe. This puppy kept me alive in a thirty foot drop into a cement wall and nothing broke on it! I am forever grateful for the quality of this vehicle keeping me safe. Also my truck has helped me move about 6 times in four years which is a huge plus as far as reasons to get this vehicle. My only complaint is that I had issues with the air conditioning going out twice in seven years, the fuel gauge and fuel pump broke and the nail in the coffin for my friend was when the engine began leaking into the intake valves. I am sad to say good bye, but it was a good vehicle. The only reason I gave a three on reliability is because when the fuel pump was having issues it caused the vehicle to have trouble starting consistently, but that was just my truck, I don;t know if that's a common problem for this vehicle or not. We had it for 12yrs and put 107,000 miles on it.

"Best truck"
It is the best truck I have ever owned. No problem with anything. Towed a bass boat without any problem at all. Good vehicle for all road conditions. Only had to replace 2 tires and I changed oil regularly.

2004 Chevrolet Colorado Regular Cab
"Excellent compact truck"
I am a big fan of this vehicle. I drive about 500 miles per week in all sorts of weather and this truck has never let me down. I bought a bumper off a guy who had a 4 cylinder Colorado like mine and his had 332,000 miles on it. My engine still purrs at 174,000. I have done maintenance as needed but have not needed any big repairs. Truck is very reliable and a tank in the snow. My street was not plowed during a snowstorm and my neighbor could not get up the street. I got behind him, put it in four-wheel-drive low, and I pushed him easily to the top of the street. The regular cab is surprisingly spacious. I gave 3 stars for comfort because I don’t have a lot of adjustability options on the seat, and I do have the base model so it’s very spartan. Less electronic parts to worry about though! I gave 3 stars for performance because it’ll never be mistaken for a sports car, but as far as performance based on being able to do what’s asked of it, as far as lug stuff around and blast through snow it is closer to a 5. I highly recommend this vehicle, and don’t let the miles discourage you.Read less
