The three-row 2011 Buick Enclave crossover SUV is an excellent choice for families who want minivan functionality along with classy styling and a luxurious interior.

Despite remaining mostly unchanged in its four years on the market, Buick's full-size three-row crossover continues to be a very appealing choice in a very competitive segment. The 2011 Buick Enclave is essentially the same vehicle we saw last year -- and we're fine with that. Although it shares its platform (dubbed "Lambda") with a pair of GM cousins known as the Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia, the Buick Enclave sports its own identity. That is, it offers a luxurious, stylish and upscale take on the family-friendly crossover.

Among the Buick Enclave's many strengths are its powerful V6, comfortable and quiet ride, massive cargo capacity and excellent crash-test scores. Buyers can choose between a seven- or eight-passenger setup within the handsome, well-appointed cabin. The former features a pair of captain's chairs in the second row while the latter features a three-passenger bench. These amenities are beautifully housed within the Enclave's attractive, curvaceous sheet metal.

Despite its ample measure of functionality, it's true that the 2011 Buick Enclave still can't match a minivan when it comes to practicality; the Enclave offers less cargo space, and its lack of sliding doors makes it more difficult to load rear passengers. In its favor, though, is its sheet metal: This Buick is a lot more stylish than any minivan.

Indeed, lined up against premium-branded rivals like the 2011 Acura MDX and 2011 Lexus RX 350, the Buick Enclave still looks good in terms of performance, luxury features and style. Some of the buyers who patronize other premium brands might sniff at the Buick's hard-to-shake old-man image and sometimes inconsistent cabin materials. More mainstream shoppers might consider the 2011 Ford Flex, 2011 Hyundai Veracruz and 2011 Mazda CX-9, all of which have their own strengths. Overall, though, the Buick Enclave stands as a solid choice for families looking for space, style and luxury at a price that won't break the bank.

The 2011 Buick Enclave is a large crossover SUV that comes in CX, CXL1 and CXL2 trim levels. All have a standard seven-passenger seating configuration via second-row captain's chairs and a third-row bench seat. An optional second-row bench seat, available at no extra charge, increases capacity to eight.

Even the base CX is nicely equipped out of the box with 19-inch alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights, foglamps, a power liftgate, heated outside mirrors, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and cloth upholstery. Other standard features include partial power front seats, a tilt-and-telescoping leather/wood steering wheel, tri-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth, OnStar and a six-speaker CD/MP3 audio system with an auxiliary audio jack and satellite radio.

The Enclave CXL1 adds leather upholstery, heated power front seats (eight-way driver, four-way passenger), driver-seat memory functions, rear parking sensors and a back-up camera with a small rearview-mirror display. The CXL2 tacks on active headlights, power-folding heated outside mirrors (with driver-side auto-dimming and integrated turn signals), a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, ventilated front seats, a 115-volt power outlet and a 10-speaker Bose surround-sound system with a USB audio jack.

On the CX, you can add the Bose stereo, back-up camera and rear parking sensors as options. For the CXL trims, you can additionally add a rear-seat entertainment system and a navigation system (with back-up camera display). Other Enclave options include a dual-pane "SkyScape" sunroof (not available on CX), a second-row storage console with a 12-volt power outlet (also not available on CX) and towing preparation.

The 2011 Buick Enclave offers a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Either way, the power plant is a 3.6-liter V6 that pumps out 288 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard.

EPA fuel economy estimates stand at 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway and 19 mpg combined for front-wheel-drive models, while all-wheel-drive versions rate 16/22/18. With the optional trailering package, the Enclave can tow up to 4,500 pounds.

Stability control, front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags are standard on every 2011 Buick Enclave. In brake testing, the Enclave came to a stop from 60 mph in 139 feet. This is a somewhat long stopping distance for this segment, and both the Ford Flex and Mazda CX-9 perform better.

In the government's new, more strenuous crash testing for 2011, the Enclave earned a top five-star rating for overall performance, with four out of five stars given for front-impact protection and five stars for side-impact protection. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing, the Enclave earned the best score of "Good" in frontal-offset and side-impact crash tests.

"Carlike" is a term often applied to crossover SUVs. It doesn't quite apply to the gargantuan 2011 Buick Enclave, which tips the scales at close to 5,000 pounds with all-wheel drive; indeed, we've noted that the Enclave feels bigger and more ponderous on the road than some rival crossovers.

Nonetheless, the Enclave's 3.6-liter V6 is plenty powerful in most situations, and while the handling is neither lively nor inspiring, it's stable and secure. The 2011 Buick Enclave also shines on road trips thanks to its quiet ride and compliant suspension.

The Enclave's cabin has an upscale vibe thanks to its stylish dash and wood-grain inlays. There's chrome trim everywhere, though, which means blinding reflections when the sun is at certain angles. Two other downsides include small and indistinct buttons for the audio and climate controls, and outward visibility that's more compromised than that of competing vehicles.

On the bright side, the Enclave is one of the roomiest crossover SUVs on the market. There are 19 cubic feet of usable space behind the third-row seat, 68 cubic feet with the third row's 60/40 sections folded into the floor and an enormous (though not quite minivan-grade) 116 cubic feet with the second row folded. Third-row access is facilitated by a tilt-and-slide function for the second-row seats; however, some agility is still required to get back there, and the Enclave's third row is more claustrophobic than the Ford Flex's.

The 2011 Buick Enclave is made to carry up to eight passengers in relaxed comfort and it does so with ease. At the same time it also manages to deliver engaging, even fun driving dynamics. The steering is light but firms up a bit at speed to give the Enclave a confident feel. The V6 engine provides good if not scorching acceleration and should be up to the task of hauling a full load of cargo or passengers. At cruising speeds Buick's attention to noise reduction pays off with very little wind, road or engine noise intruding into the cabin.

Second-Row SeatsGetting to the rear-most seats in many vehicles can be a hassle. Not so in the Enclave, where the cleverly designed second-row seats, with flip-up cushions and the capability to slide far forward, provide a wide flat space to enter the third-row seating area. QuietTuning Buick's QuietTuning method of in-vehicle noise reduction may seem like marketing hype, but it has to be experienced to be appreciated. At higher speeds the interior remains delightfully calm and free of the sounds that fatigue occupants on long drives.

The 2011 Buick Enclave's interior features a curvaceous dash design accented by camphor burl wood appliques and chrome trim. High-quality materials, a simple, logical layout and an impressively low level of interior noise make for an extremely inviting cabin. The Enclave is offered in both seven- and eight-passenger versions with slide-and-fold second-row seats that make getting to the third row extremely easy. Cargo space behind the third row is larger than most in this class and, with the second and third rows folded, the Enclave offers a cavernous, flat load area.

As one of the few vehicles to make it from concept to production without having its exterior styling diluted, the 2011 Buick Enclave offers a bolder appearance than many crossover SUVs. While large enough to accommodate eight passengers, the Enclave's artful body lines give it the look of a much smaller vehicle. The face of the Enclave features a "waterfall" grille, modern-looking portholes above the fenders and intricately detailed almond-shaped head lamps. Adding some flash to its svelte body are standard 18-inch wheels, chrome-tipped dual exhaust outlets and chrome roof rails.

There are two trims offered for the 2011 Buick Enclave. The standard equipment list for the base CX trim includes 18-inch wheels, a power liftgate, power front seats and tri-zone automatic climate control. Stepping up to the CXL adds heated power adjustable front seats, leather seating surfaces, stylish 19-inch aluminum wheels and the Driver Confidence package (remote vehicle engine start, a rearview camera and rear parking sensors). Standard safety features on all Enclaves include anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability and traction control, front air bags, front-seat-mounted air bags and three-row side curtain airbags that stay inflated longer in the event of a vehicle rollover.

Many of the optional features available for the 2011 Buick Enclave are grouped into packages. The most comprehensive package is the 2XL option, which includes power folding side mirrors, adaptive headlamps, Bose audio, heated/cooled front seats and a power tilting and telescoping steering wheel. Other options include a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, a rear-facing camera, eight-passenger seating, Bose audio, a DVD navigation system and a power sunroof.

Powering the 2011 Buick Enclave is a strong 3.6-liter V6. It delivers energetic performance and excellent fuel economy with the help of modern technologies like variable valve timing and an electronic throttle. The V6 is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. A wide spread of gear ratios helps get the most out of the engine while maximizing efficiency. We did, however, notice some delayed reactions from the transmission and the occasional rough shift. An optional all-wheel-drive system is also available which requires no driver intervention and automatically distributes torque between the front and rear wheels. 3.6-liter V6 288 horsepower at 6300 rpm270 lb.-ft. of torque at 3400 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/24 FWD, 16/22 AWD

Among the Buick Enclave's competitors are the Lexus RX 350, Audi Q7, Volvo XC90, and Acura MDX. With a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting around $ 36,000 and a fully loaded price of nearly $ 55,000, the Enclave is a relative bargain in the luxury crossover SUV category. While the less-expensive Enclave doesn't offer a V8 engine like the XC90 or a turbodiesel like the Q7, it does offer seating for eight, more than any of its competitors. To compare the actual transaction prices that consumers are paying, be sure to check the Enclave's Fair Purchase Price on kbb.com. The price advantage offered by the Buick Enclave is somewhat offset by residual values that are expected to fall well below many of its competitors.

Buick Enclave Overview and History

The Enclave is a fullsize premium SUV built on General Motors' Lambda platform, sharing most of its components with the GMC Acadia, Chevrolet Traverse and the Saturn Outlook.
Before becoming a trademark of automobile luxury and innovative engineering, Buick was rather fond of plumbing inventions. Born in Arbroath, Scotland, David Dunbar Buick experienced a second-coming to life in his mid 30's when he became particularly interested in gasoline engines. He soon discarded his plumbing-related activities and, by the 1900's, he had already built an impressive number of engines for farming and boating usage. Buick's passion for motors led him to establishing his own company, called Auto-Vim and Power Co.

However, this choice of name lacked the powerful resonance of its founder's name, which was quick to replace it by 1903 - when the company pinned a brand new name tag to its chest: the Buick Manufacturing Co. During the same year, the company's heads went for further simplifying the name by dropping the 'Manufacturing' from the label.

Once corporate identity and appearance issues were satisfactory solved, Buick started focusing on car-engine development. The emphasis Buick put on his work would soon pay back, the genesis of the overhead valve engine having brought the company a generous amount of acclaim.

This was mostly thanks to the positioning of the valves, which allowed Buick engines to be fitted into tighter spaces while granting drivers easy access to maintenance - unlike the majority of the car engines at the time (which sported angle-mounted valves). Although Buick and his top engineering duo, Eugene Richard and Walter L. Marr, were successful in avoiding some major engine-building related intricacies, the brand entered a stage of slow-sales paradox.

Such were the financial difficulties encountered that, by September 1903, David Buick and his financial backer Benjamin Briscoe Jr. sold the firm to a wagon-making group in Flint, Michigan, 60 miles from Detroit (the former headquarters of the Buick factory). Luckily, the Buick plant was moved entirely to Flint, which allowed David Buick, who had been kept as manager, to further focus on his work.

Despite the 1904 construction of the first Flint Buick, the Model B, the by now one-year old Flint-Buick merger was inches away from hitting against the bulk of a metaphorical harassing Mr. Financial Trouble. And it did. The impact left the company with no other alternative than to seek help.

James H. Whiting, manager of the Flint Wagon Works, approached William C. “Billy” Durant, Flint-carriage king and future GM boss, on the company's status. Durant's nose for business as well as his uncanny intuition and promotional skills would later drag Buick from the pits of tar it had fallen into, straight to flashy auto-show glamour, inked front page wows and racing domination.

Although Durant was not a big automobile fan, he immediately recognized the sales-potential of the Buicks. It was the torque and rugged suspension of the cars Buick had built so far that convinced Durant that he had struck gold.

Thanks to the easiness and sturdiness Buicks proved in hill climbing and muddy terrain, Durant ordered a staggering 1000 units before the company had reached the 40 threshold. Though a series of production increase oriented moves, such as the construction of a new Flint-based plant and a partnership with Charles Stewart Mott (axle supplier and future GM head), Durant saved Buick from near extinction.

Durant didn't settle for just ensuring the success of the Buick brand and went farther to conquer racing grounds as well. His team, formed of Louis Chevrolet and Wild Bob Burman (among others), snatched a total of 500 trophies only between 1908 and 1910. The reason to why Buick had so much success was that by 1908 it had become the country's leading automobile producer with 8,820 cars produced. As if this wasn't enough, the new model 10 had topped all the other company's sales, with 4,002 units produced. The success registered by the Buick name grew enough to provide Durant with the grounds for spawning a large holding company. Thus, General Motors was born.

When the 20's came, Buick was numbly bathing in refreshing popularity as it had become the top choice car brand for world leaders. In breaks between garnering acclaim, Buick was busy crossing finish lines and popping champagnes from the height of first-place racing podiums across the world.

In fact, Buick had virtually conquered the world, with automobiles having taken part in major expeditions and crossings, such as the Lowel Thomas-led first motorized trip into Afghanistan, 1923.

However, the end of the 20's brought along not-so-great news, as the Great Depression swept the country, destroying lots of companies in the process. Buick was able to withstand the fund-consuming Depression, having displayed a range of fully rejuvenated models sporting performance Dynaflow automatic transmissions, aircraft inspired portholes, or Ventiports, and renewed style elements such as flashy vertical grilles and meticulously executed finishing touches.

With its growth uninterrupted, Buick continued to hold its position as the all-leading American car producer throughout the 90's with an emphasis on sedans. The Y2K year inoculated a fresh take on the car with Buick extending its activity in developing new convertible and crossover concepts. The reshaping process undergone by Buick has left the company focusing on a new range of automobiles, currently flaunting the three premium LaCrosse, Lucerne and Enclave models.

2011 Buick Enclave Consumer Reviews

Good MPG for it's size
I bought a 2011 Enclave with only 20k miles after my lease was up on my 2012 Infiniti EX35. My Enclave gets a consistent 17 mpg in town compared to 15 mpg for the EX. It is easily twice the size of the Infiniti, the primary reason for not getting another EX lease - no one could fit in the back seat! So, for a vehicle that is nearly as large as my Yukon Denali, I'm fairly impressed with the gas mileage. everyone has their opinions, but I was puzzled by all the comments about how 2-3 mpg was bankrupting people that bought $ 45k cars and were considering $ 60k cars with better MPG to make up the difference. Different econ class than I had in high school I guess...LOL!
peshawarkiss, 11/15/2010
I never thought I would buy a Buick
Pros: comfort, ride, quietness, styling, space, utility Cons: gas mileage, needs tighter steering, better visibility out the back. Summary: I had test drove Pilot, MDX, RX350, Sorento, VeraCruz, SantaFe, Highlander, Acadia, Traverse and Edge. For the size, comfort, range, performance, convenience and price, the Enclave stood out among its competiton IMO) - this selection was not only a surprise to me but those who know me as well - particularly since I have been a Honda/Acura person for many years. The Enclave is a very nice car and if I had to do it over again, I would purchase it again.

exceptional
Purchased a fully loaded Enclave. Towing, chrome, 20" wheels, DVD rear....and those directional head lights, that's just so damn neat. I've never owned a luxury SUV and well, it's a pleasure to drive. I don't care about mileage as I feel it can't be avoided in something this big. It could be better I suppose, but I expected 20mpg average and that's what I get. Their paint and chrome, especially in the tri-coat diamond enclave is beautiful. The front end, especially with the blue ring in the headlights and waterfall grill compliment each other well. It's what sold my wife on this vehicle. ...and remote start standard? Heck yeah!

Good and Bad
The Enclave is the most comfortable vehicle I have ever driven. We got it to drive on highway trips and that's all we use it for. My previous Lexus 350 caused Sacrum pain after long drives. Six weeks in physical therapy at $ 600+/week definitely makes a few miles per gallon mileage difference a non-issue. If you want a performance vehicle get something else. The Enclave definitely is a land cruiser.

2015 Buick Enclave
"A great car for a grandmother ."
This is my grandmother‘s car and I think it fits her perfectly but I think this car is just slightly above average. It’s easy to drive and is relatively comfortable on the inside this also gets great mpg And does decently well in the snow and is loaded with luxury features . although the seating position is rather high the only major negative of this car is it’s not particularly good on acceleration and it offers no thrills in the driving experience. But if you’re just looking for something that gets you from point A to point B in a comfortable fashion this is the car for you .

2016 Buick Enclave
"Easy handling nicest riding vehicle ever."
Riding in this car is like sitting in my living room it’s that comfortable! Also this is the quietest car I ever rode in... the seating is comfortable for 7 adults with 4 Captains seats. The only drawback is that this car is the entry level so electronics are a bit below the premium level entry. Still, it has a back up camera and remote starter. Excellent vehicle!

2010 Buick Enclave
"A true touring SUV. A joy to drive."
The 2010 Enclave is better than the 2019. Transmission is smoother. Front grill more impressive. Steering wheel is mahogany and leather. Front and back windshield is much larger giving better visibility. Front seats are wider and more comfortable. Trunk goes up higher. More internal volume because they flattened the back roof. A test drive on the 2019 sent me running to other brands. When my SUV was being serviced, they gave me an Encore loaner. This vehicle is a disgrace to the Buick image. The Envision should be made in the USA if you want to sell it in the USA. Outside mirrors are larger. Buick seems to be going in the wrong direction.Read less
