With a car-based chassis and attractive styling, the 2007 Lincoln MKX is a fresh alternative to more established luxury crossover SUVs; however, its questionable brakes and so-so cabin furnishings leave it a few steps behind the leaders in this class.

No doubt encouraged by the sales success of such vehicles as the Nissan Murano, Lincoln is bringing its first crossover, the MKX, to market for the 2007 model year. Those familiar with Lincolns past will most likely "get" that the MKX designation actually stands for Mark X. But this time around the X doesn't mean 10. Cleverly, or maybe not, the X is an indication of the MKX's designation as a crossover vehicle.

First shown at the 2005 Detroit auto show as a concept vehicle, the 2007 Lincoln MKX has contemporary styling and a modern interior design that moves the brand forward in a positive way. However, the MKX lacks a third-row seat, making it slightly less family-friendly than some other SUVs in its class. But Lincoln's first crossover still has a lot going for it. As with its corporate sibling, the Ford Edge, the MKX boasts a gutsy 3.5-liter V6 engine and plenty of headroom, legroom and storage space within its cabin. It can also be had with luxury-themed items like surround-sound audio, heated and cooled front seats, and adaptive headlights.

Ultimately, Lincoln's MKX SUV is yet another choice in the increasingly crowded luxury crossover market. Shoppers are apt to find the MKX's combination of clean, elegant styling, high-end options and a reasonable price appealing. In its first year, the MKX should prove to be a popular vehicle. But it's probably a good idea to check out competitors like the Acura RDX/MDX, BMW X3/X5, Cadillac SRX, Infiniti FX35, Lexus RX 350, Mercedes-Benz M-Class, Volkswagen Touareg and Volvo XC90, as several offer a more refined driving experience, superior cabin materials and added versatility due to the availability of third-row seating.

A midsize luxury crossover SUV, the 2007 Lincoln MKX is available in a single trim level. It offers a generous standard features list and plenty of stand-alone options. Leather seating is standard and both front seats have eight-way power adjustment. One-touch front windows are also standard, as are dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-and-wood steering wheel and 18-inch alloy wheels. Notable options are grouped into packages. For example the Elite package contains the Vista Roof (a sliding front sunroof and a fixed rear skylight), a navigation system and a 14-speaker surround-sound audio system with an in-dash six-CD/MP3 player and satellite radio. The Ultimate Package features options like chrome wheels, heated and cooled seats, adaptive headlights, a power rear liftgate and 10-way power front seats with memory. Some of these features are available without purchasing the larger package. Other stand-alone options include heated rear seats and park assist.

All MKXs are powered by a 3.5 liter V6 that makes 265 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. The MKX is available with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. A six-speed automatic transmission is the only transmission offered; it unfortunately lacks a manual shift mode and provides limited access to lower gears. With the optional Class II towing package, the MKX is able to tow 3,500 pounds.

As is fitting for a luxury SUV, the 2007 Lincoln MKX SUV comes standard with a wide array of safety features. Traction and stability control (including rollover mitigation technology) is standard, as are six airbags, including front-seat side impact airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Antilock disc brakes and a tire-pressure monitor are also standard.

Ford's 3.5-liter V6 doesn't provide blistering acceleration in the 2007 Lincoln MKX, but the engine is smoother and more vigorous than any Ford-based V6 in recent memory. Lincoln says the MKX goes from zero to 60 mph in about 8 seconds. The cabin stays quiet even at highway speeds and handling is respectable for a 2-tons-plus midsize SUV. Also, the steering is nicely weighted, which makes it very manageable around town. The brakes, however, are a major disappointment. Pedal feel is progressive, but the Lincoln's braking distances feel long, even in city traffic. Additionally, during instrumented testing conducted at our test track of the nearly identical Ford Edge, 60-0-mph stopping distances were poor.

In an obvious nod to Lincolns past, the MKX's dash and gauge cluster have a semi-retro look with metallic-looking finish, real wood accents and a squarish theme for the gauges. It's a conservative look overall and materials quality is mediocre for a premium-brand SUV. Still, the MKX does offer unique optional interior features like an all-glass roof with power retractable sunshades and a THX-certified audio system. Lincoln's midsize crossover SUV seats five and does not have a third-row seat. Maximum cargo capacity is 69 cubic feet. That's more than the Infiniti FX35 offers but not as much as what's available from the SRX, RX 350 or XC90.

We found the MKX's acceleration subjectively excellent from rest or almost any speed, though no manu-matic feature is provided for those who sometimes like to select their own gears. The MacPherson strut front suspension uses ride-smoothing hydro bushings on an isolated subframe. The four-link independent rear suspension has outboard rear shocks for improved wheel control. The available "intelligent" all-wheel drive monitors and predicts traction at all four wheels and delivers torque to those with the best grip. It all works surprisingly well to deliver a near-car-like ride and agile handling despite its 4,220-pound base curb weight. This may be the quietest Lincoln ever built, but (partly to accommodate the huge Vista Roof) there's no front passenger assist handle.

Adaptive Front LightingThe MKX's projector-beam headlights pivot with the steering to illuminate as much as 36 more feet of road during cornering.Panoramic Vista Roof A giant 27.3- by 29.4-inch optional forward sunroof slides open fully or tilts to vent at the touch of a switch, while a 15.75- by 31.3-inch fixed rear moon roof gives rear-seat passengers an overhead sky view. Dual power sunshades operate concurrently to block out glare when desired.

The ultra-quiet cabin features large, legible gauges and a well-organized center stack housing the audio and optional DVD navigation systems. Accents are satin nickel or optional wood, and interior lighting is cool white. The large, deep console box has adjustable inserts that can accommodate CDs, purses or laptop computers. The 60/40-split second-row seat provides impressive roominess in all dimensions and can fold forward into a level floor or recline up to 15 degrees with the same easy-to-use handle. The large rear liftgate opens to 31.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row or 68.7 with it folded.

The MKX (unlike its full-size SUV big brother Navigator) is noticeably devoid of gratuitous chrome, or "bling." Its handsome look begins with a heritage Lincoln grille, integrated fog lamps and a steeply-sloped windshield, extends along its high-shouldered, flare-fendered flanks with blacked-out rocker panels and finishes with a fast-sloping rear window under an integrated roof spoiler, wrap-around taillights connected by edge-to-edge LEDs across the liftgate and sporty dual exhausts. To enhance its stance and optimize interior room, the standard 18-inch wheels are pushed as far as possible toward the corners.

The nicely-equipped Lincoln MKX comes with automatic headlamps, leather seating, eight-way power front seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel with cruise and audio controls, dual air conditioning with particulate filter, six-speed automatic transmission, four-wheel independent suspension, power rack-and-pinion steering, 18-inch machined-aluminum wheels, power heated mirrors, power windows and locks, remote keyless entry with keypad, premium MP3-capable audio with six-CD changer and three 12-volt outlets. Standard safety features include four-wheel disc four-channel anti-lock brakes (ABS), traction control with Roll Stability Control (RSC) and six air bags: Dual-stage fronts, seat-mounted side bags and a Safety Canopy air-curtain system with rollover detection.

Among the many MKX options are chromed wheels, adaptive front lighting, a panoramic Vista Roof, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, three choices of wood interior trim, a 600-watt, 14-speaker THX Certified audio system and DVD navigation with voice technology that can read turn-by-turn directions in three languages, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system with an eight-inch drop-down screen, an Easy Fold remote switch that drops the second-row seats flat, SIRIUS Satellite Radio, an MP3 input jack and a fourth 12-volt outlet inside the console box for your iPod, cell phone, laptop or PDA.

The MKX's all-new 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve aluminum Duratec 35 V6 delivers 265 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque through a new six-speed multiple-clutch automatic transmission. It boasts variable intake cam timing, a dual-plenum intake manifold and a relatively high 10.3:1 compression ratio to optimize its balance of performance and efficiency.3.5-liter V6265 horsepower @ 6250 rpm250 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4500 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 18/25 (FWD), 17/24 (AWD)

The starting Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the 2007 Lincoln MKX is a surprisingly reasonable $ 34,795 with standard front-wheel drive and $ 36,445 with all-wheel drive. That compares favorably to the Cadillac SRX, Lexus RX 350 and Acura MDX at $ 37,855, $ 38,115 and $ 40,665, respectively. We expect that the MKX will retain an average residual value over time, besting the Cadillac SRX but below the Lexus RX 350's expected residual. Lincoln MKX Overview and History

The MKX, in production since 2006, is a medium-size luxury crossover SUV based on the Ford CD3 platform.
Lincoln sprung as an independent luxury-car producer in 1917. Founded by engineering whiz Henry M. Leland after his departure from Cadillac, which he had helped co-found, the company was named Lincoln as a reminder of the admiration Leland bore for the now defunct state-leader. In a macabre coincidence, president JFK was assassinated just like Abraham Lincoln was. At the time of  his death, JFK was being driven in a Lincoln Continental limousine.

However, before such drama occurred, Lincoln was a fairly small company that supplied Liberty aircraft engines for the Army during WWI. Having teamed up with son Wilfred, Leland converted his factory to manufacturing luxury automobiles right after the war. Despite Leland's skill and potential of his vehicles, the factory encountered several design-related obstacles and financial trouble that could not be overcome. Forced into bankruptcy, Leland sold his company to Ford in 1922 for $ 8 million.

Soon after the Ford takeover, Lincoln's first series of automobiles would enter mass production. Under Ford, Lincoln's styling problems were solved as were the financial issues  experimented before. Little changes or none were made to Leland's original engines. Coupled with production cost cuts, this would allow the company to toll out some 5,500 vehicles in December, 1922.

As of 1923, newer body styles appeared, many of them having been the result of partnerships with coachbuilders such as Fleetwood and Brunn. This lead to the appearance of  a diversified range of vehicles comprised of large sedans and limousines that could accommodate as many as 7 passengers. Despite the fairly big price tags these special coach-built vehicles came with, Lincoln sales did not plummet. They did just the contrary, registering a spectacular 45% increase over the previous years with 7,875 vehicles sold.

The 1924's brought forth the release of the famous Flyers that were extensively used by US Police Departments. The cars premiered some features that weren't introduced on private models until 2 years after. Two wheel disc breaks, weapon racks, armored windows and Police whistles were among the many 'accessories' Flyers came equipped with.

Probably the most famous car ever made by Lincoln sprouted in 1932  Eugene T. “Bob” Gregorie's drawing board. The later release of the Zephyr in 1936 smashed open the gates for the release of the Continental. The latter was actually a modified 1938 Zephyr Coupe whom Gregorie had sectioned and added a vertical tire mount to. The car became so successful that it sold in over 5000 units until production halted in 1948.

However, the Continental would not go down for good. It was later resuscitated  through the Mark II model. By 1955, the Mark II could be purchased for a stunning $ 10,000, as much as a Rolls Royce cost those days.

Later designs, such as the Town Car and the bulky Navigator, aided Lincoln in becoming the best sold luxury car brand in the US by 1998. After a brief change of ownership between 1998 and 2002 when Lincoln belonged to the Premier Automotive Group, the company returned on Ford premises where it can still be found today.

Despite its tradition as a luxury car manufacturer and presidential limousine supplier, the company has experienced a severe setback in the last few years, having lost against Asian and European imports. This is mostly due to the lack of new models, issue that Ford hopes to solve by reinventing the brand. Lincoln's ascension is still unspooling through the release of models such the MKZ and MKX.

2007 Lincoln MKX Consumer Reviews

Expectations Realized
Overall, the MKX is quick, looks very sharp, has a nice ride and a very accommodating "main" cabin, with decent fuel economy. It is pretty sweet to get this kind of power from a six using regular fuel and move 4400 lbs with gusto! The THX Audio system is excellent, the controls are logically located and operate in a crisp and refined manner.

Awsome Car
At first i was skeptical about buying a lincoln but after driving this car it has completely changed my thoughts about the car company. This is a great car. It's fast, handles great and looks great in the black i got it in. Interior materials are tip notch and this car is easily up there with the RX350 and ML350. Gas milage is great even though i have only had it about a week now. The optional THX surround sound w/ navi is worth the splurge and so is the panorama sunroof....Great car overall....

Love this car
I don't usually write reviews online but I feel strongly about this car. My 2007 Lincoln MKX has been running now for 100,000 miles and it is still running great.

Best in Class
Great Looks, great safety equipment, to many toys to mention, drives like a dream with plenty of power, corners very well. and is the quietest vehicle I've ever owned. Power lift gate and huge power roof are great ideas. The 2nd row seats fold with a button. No other make puts it together like this for the price.

I have owned and still have a 2009 Kia amanti it is now 2024 I have 51000 miles on this car excellent handling in all weather except ice and deep snow very fast in traffic I think the handling is tight and responsive. My spouse has driven this on the interstate frequently and the first thing he did was get it up to 220 mph at this speed is floaty but under 80 mph just a pleasure to drive *****
