The 2002 Ford Ranger isn't the freshest compact pickup on the market, but it has aged gracefully. We like this truck plenty, especially when equipped with the available 207-horse V6 engine.

Whether it's image or utility that attracts you to a compact truck, Ford stands ready to seduce you into its strong-selling Ranger, which is sold in XL, Edge or XLT trim in a variety of cabs, bed styles and drivetrains. Pick a regular cab or SuperCab with either two- or four-wheel drive. Need a longbed? You're stuck with a regular-cab two-wheeler, chum.

The standard engine on 2WD models is a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine. It makes 135 horsepower and 153 pound-feet of torque. A 3.0-liter V6 is standard on 4WD models and gets better fuel economy for 2002. It produces 150 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of twist. The Explorer's 4.0-liter V6 is also available packing 207 horsepower and 238 lb-ft of grunt.

With the largest V6, acceleration is sprightly, both from a standstill or when merging and passing. This year, the big engine can be matched to a five-speed manual transmission, but only in the new FX4 off-road truck.

Designed to appeal to the Ranger buyer who needs a serious off-roading rig, the new FX4 includes a limited-slip differential, 31-inch BFGoodrich all-terrain tires, special 15-inch alloy wheels, tow hooks, skid plates and Bilstein shocks. Special exterior trim dresses the outside, while sport seats, A-pillar grab handles and rubber "slush" floor mats are added to the cabin. The FX4 package is only available on XLT 4WD SuperCab models.

Other changes for 2002 include the addition of a SecuriLock anti-theft system on all Rangers. A new MP3 player is optional, a first in the compact pickup segment, according to Ford. Edge and XLT models configured as 4WD SuperCabs get a revised 16-inch alloy wheel design, and color-keyed floor mats are standard on all XLTs. Three new paint colors round out the changes.

Well-controlled overall, with good steering feedback, Rangers handle easily, corner capably, maneuver neatly and stay reasonably stable on curves. Occupants aren't likely to complain about the ride, either, though it can grow bouncy around town. This is not surprising, as mileage isn't the greatest with the powerful four-liter engine and five-speed automatic.

The four-door SuperCab makes it easy to access the storage compartment from either side of the truck, a big assist when loading cargo and gear. The standard rear doors on SuperCab models hinge off the corner pillars of the cab and swing out 90 degrees from the vehicle. There are no B-pillars to obstruct loading. If you're looking for a true crew cab truck, you'll have to shop for an Explorer Sport Trac.

Ford has had the best-selling small trucks in the U.S. for years. Fun to drive, sharp-looking and well-built, the Ranger delivers a solid compact-pickup experience. Its most serious competition comes from the Dodge Dakota and Toyota Tacoma. The Dakota is slightly larger and offers V8 power while the Toyota has a reputation for stout build quality and infallible reliability. Still, Ford's entry is worth a look, if the Dodge and Toyota don't meet your needs.

2002 Ford Ranger Future Generations

Ford Ranger Overview and History

Henry Ford started the company in 1902 with $ 28,000 in cash from twelve investors, among which were John and Horace Dodge, who would later found the Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle Company. He was 40 years when he first established the company's first factory on Bagley Street, Detroit.

He would later incorporate the firm on June 16, 1903. Ford Motor Company would go on and label their models chronologically in alfabetical order, starting with the Model A to the Model K and Model S, which was Ford's last right-hand steering vehicle. Then, in 1908 Ford introduced the Model T, which was designed by Childe Harold Wills and two Hungarian immigrants, Joseph A. Galamb and Eugene Farkas. This model proved to be of quintessential Ford vehicle, placing the company among the most influential automotive brands in history.

The Ford Model T was reliable, practical and affordable, which made it a big hit in the US, where it was advertised as the middle-class man's vehicle. The car's success compelled Ford to expand his business and layout the basics of mass production principles in 1913 with the introduction of the world's first vehicle assembly line. By 1912, production figures for the Model T alone reached nearly 200,000 units.

This organizational innovation brought in the vehicle construction field allowed Ford to reduce chassis assembly time by as much as 10 hours, dropping from 12 ½ h to 2h 40 min.

Besides ensuring the efficiency of the production process, Ford turned his company into an interactive entity by announcing a new profit-sharing policy. This would grant buyers a cut of profits if sales reached 300,000. As expected, sales effortlessly reached the 300k threshold and went even further to hit a record 501,000 in 1915.

As part of a new set of financial tactics, Ford provided working places for the disabled who otherwise had a hard time finding a job, reduced work shifts and doubled all employee's salaries. Changes like these sparked a tremendous sales increase while also setting the base of modern working conditions.

Still, the US and Canadian market would prove to be too small to fit Ford's plans. By the mid 20's, the Ford label had crossed the ocean and reached England, France, Germany, Denmark, Austria as well as distant Australia. The company's activity on European grounds further helped the brand's revenue growth.

War would not shake the Ford company as bad as other car makers. Post WWI improvements include the introduction of four-wheel brakes and a series of new vehicle releases to match new consumer demands. In 1922 Ford entered the luxury car segment with the acquisition of the Lincoln Motor Company, named after Abraham Lincoln whom Henry Ford admired.

Ford Motor Co. was one of the few big American corporations to survive the Great Depression, although the plummeting automotive sales led the company to scale down its operations and lay off many workers. In May 1929, Ford Motor Co. signed an agreement with the Soviet Union to provide technical assistance until 1938 to construct an integrated automobile-manufacturing plant at Nizhny Novgorod, in exchange for the Soviets purchasing $ 13 million worth of automobiles and parts. Under this agreement many American engineers and skilled auto workers went in 1932 to work on the Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod (GAZ), or Gorki Automotive Plant. The few who remained in the Soviet Union after the completion of the plant fell victims to Stalin's Great Terror, ending either shot or exiled to Soviet gulags.

With the arrival of WWII Ford increased its influence on the global stage becoming an active player in the war effort, a thing underlined by US President Franklin Roosevelt referring to Detroit as the "Arsenal of Democracy." When the US War Department handed production of B-24 Liberator airplanes to Ford, the output rose to 20 airplanes per day instead of only one per day managed by the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation.

After WWII Ford continued its passenger vehicle operations and in 1955 introduced the iconic Thunderbird model. Then it introduced the Edsel brand in 1958, which proved to be a failure and was dissolved in 1960. Part Edsel's failure as an automotive brand resided in the onset of the 1957 recession in the States and the vehicle's high price tag.

Ford Motor Co. managed to get back up from its Edsel failure with the introduction of the Falcon model in 1960 and the Mustang in 1964. The company's next major step was represented by the formation of Ford Europe division in 1967.

Ford plunged into a state of brand-fatigue that would bring the company to the point of near bankruptcy. Following major sales losses in the 2000's, Ford was pinned against the wall by debts and the imminence of closing down.

Preferring to make it back on its own, Ford mortgaged all of its assets in 2006. As of then, the company has releases a variety of new models both under the Ford brand name and the rest of the sub-brands it owns such as fresher and edgier Mercuries and flashier Lincolns, Ford's luxury division. Business in Europe has also been good for Ford, especially after the introduction of the Focus model in 1997 and although it hasn't fully recovered, it's definitely on the way to regaining popularity.

I'm gonna miss her when she's gone
I've owned this truck since it was new... over 16 years! Been very dependable and capable for a small truck. After moving from Texas to snow country, I'm afraid it may be time for 4WD. Can't stress enough how reliable this truck has been. Power is adequate but works hard to go up winding mountain roads. MPG has always been better than advertised.

Best vehicle EVER!!
I bought this truck new and barely had any problems during the 13 years i owned it. I performed regular maintinence as suggested and drove this truck to 200,000 miles until someone rearended me. During those 200k, i replaced the MASS AIRFLOW SENSORE at 120k, the coil pack at 178k, fan clutch at 180k and manual transmission broke at 185k (i should have never tried to drive from NJ to New Orleans...too far for and older truck with so many miles) and the plastic intake manifold at 190k. So besided breaks and tires, i drove it for 13 years and only had 4 repairs. not bad... All options worked as they should from new until it was totaled. I WOULD BUY ANOTHER!

The only rig i havent been able to kill!....yet
I will tell you this is a tough s.o.b! I've always been known as a hard drivin, evil Duke boy kinda guy .I have driven rallied and raced more vehicles to death than i can count .I purchased my 2002 Ranger FX4 right after a very long relationship ended and as usually is the case the ex releived me of my new truck.Being of irish decent and pissed at the world i took ALOT of my issues out on my Ranger.Trees couldnt stop it nor could fences ,huge rocks, mailboxes, garbage cans, stumps, flat bed trailers(both tires up and over like joey chitwood) humps, jumps, holes you name it i bet ive crashed into it ,run it over, or offended it in the last 2yrs and it just keeps going! 90mph in 3rd with the tach pegged dosent even phase my little red bastard. This truck has had my back through a very rough time and never let me down. The little red bastard is family to me now and i'd fight to the death for it.

Stellar Pick-up Truck to Meet Day to Day Needs
This truck has been in my family since it first rolled off the dealership lot back in 2002. 17 years later, it still looks, drives and performs admirably! Currently has 185,000 miles on it. 3.0L V6 engine starts up easily, idles smooth and runs excellent! Same for automatic transmission, shifts great and neither engine or transmission leaks a drop of oil or fluid (literally, not one single drop). Size of pickup truck is perfect! Not too big, or too small. My dad, who originally bought the truck is 6'2", had plenty of leg and head room within the cab and always complimented the interior design for roominess and comfort. The super cab bench seats were perfect for kids, but will fold out of the way for using the space for something else. Very versatile with great utility. Performance wise, I feel the 3.0L V6 was the sweet spot for the right amount of power but still decent fuel economy. The engine is made with a cast-iron block and iron heads, so with consistent and diligent maintenance, they are practically bulletproof and last for ever. As mentioned previously, there has been no major engine or transmission work and it still runs like a top and doesn't burn oil. Based on unwavering dependability, excellent design and proven performance, I am a HUGE fan of this truck and plan on enjoying it for years and years to come!
raspdairy,
Very reliable and economical truck
I have the RWD, 4 cyl, 5 speed stick shift, and with studded snows in the winter, this truck has never let me down. Very reliable, and great gas mileage 26+ mpg, and 31 on the highway. It's not as big and can't carry the load of a bigger truck, but great nonetheless.
lenticularcheeryble,
Awesome mini truck
My truck has the 3.0 ohv engine I’ve owned it for a few years and it has taken a beating any repairs are cheap (most fords shared parts with this truck) I would definitely recommend a ranger to any one

Have had the vehicle for 4 years from a older man
COMPLETE UNDERCOAT NO RUST ANYWHERE TIRES EXCELLANT PA. INSPECTION AND SMOG TEST INSPECTION. The truck has been garage kept its life time. Only trouble that I have had is the fuel filter and it has been replaced.

very good truck for the money
had it 10 years, very good performance in all respects. could use bigger motor, but i have pulled loaded u-hauls with no problems. no mechanical issues at all. had issue with dome light staying on, removed dome light bulbs. driver seat back lever splines stripped, Ford wanted 50+ bucks for a new one, 7$ vise grip pliers work just fine...

good little truck
The only complaint I have is the underpowered 3.0 v6. I would have rather had the 4.0. It is reliable but underpowered. I have pulled some seriously overweight loads with it though. I love the 5 speed auto transmission. The engine doesnt burn any oil at all. Everything still works great on the truck. Regular maintenance is easy.

Love this truck.
Great truck.

The undercarriage and frame is rusting away. It passed inspection this time, however, I was told that it may not pass the following year because of the rust to the frame.

Great pick-up with lots of cargo room
Bought it since new in 2002 and have no complaints about its quality and performance.
gillsgraphic,
great first vehicle
I bought it about 1 year ago from family, and I love it! As a slight down side, a month or so after buying it, it needed $1400 worth of work. My brothers work hard and are very VERY rough on vehicles. since then It's been great! total repairs have been almost non-existent. I went through a time when I couldn't get it to start. But someone came and explained, that it wasn't all the way in park. And it's been great ever since! overall I would keep this vehicle until it dies, because it's dependable. Considering the beating it took from the previous owner, I'd say it is still in amazing condition. I did have to get the brakes worked on once, but then I accidentally drove a little with the emergency brake on. The only thing is.....I don't drive much, and therefore don't really need a truck. I need the gas mileage more than the truck. my situation has changed a bit.
hypocrisywrongful,
Really Suprised with this little truck!!!
I have owned this truck for 5 years and it has been great!!!!! when I bought the truck it only had 58k now it has 156k. I was an independent contractor for 2 1/2 years and I put about 90k on it in that time, it has never leaked or over heated. I have only used mobile 1 full synthetic since I've had the truck. The only parts I replaced were: ball joints upper and lower, radiator hoses upper and lower along with retention bottle, breaks and tires, just normal wear and tear. Last November me and my wife drove the truck from Las Vegas to the Red wood forest in northern California, We had all of our camping gear and a camper shell, we stayed in the back of the ranger for a week and loved every minuet of it., it did pretty good for a 2.3L engine. Either way, the point is that if you take care of your vehicle and invest some money in it from time to time it WILL! last you. These Rangers always get a bad wrap. exap: "what kind of truck do you own?" "Ford Ranger". "oh sorry." a common misconception. like I said before 156k miles and has never dropped a single spot of oil. TAKE CARE OF THE THINGS YOU OWN AND THEY WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU!!!!! Thanks . Nick

2007 Ford Ranger Regular Cab
"What I’d like in a 2019+ Ranger..."
In a few years, after the troubles with the new Rangers get straightened out, I might buy a newer Ford Ranger. I currently have a 2007 Ford Ranger 4x4 with the 4.0, 5-speed, long bed and xlt. It’s great, I like the platform of it, but as it gets older, I start thinking of a new vehicle. I’d like something slightly larger and the only major gripe I have with the new Rangers is how short the beds are. But, if Ford could build into the bed, a bed extender, something that completely folded apart and slid away, maybe into the tailgate and inside of the bed sides, that would be cool. I don’t always need that long of a bed, but when I do, like when moving a ladder, couch, lumber, etc. a 5.1’ bed turned into an almost 7’ bed would be great. Other suggestions... royal blue, orange-red, pebble tan interior options, maybe make that plastic piece around the Ranger fender badges, pebble tan, royal blue or orange-red. Aluminum panel on the back of the tailgate with F O R D on the lower right corner, looking like the 83-87 xlt Ford Ranger tailgates. Aluminum on those plastic lips around the wheel wells. But yea.. getting tired of shifting gears, haha. A 10-speed auto with a powerful 2.3 seems nice. I just hope the electronics last a long time in these newer vehicles.
