Despite its substantial age, the 2001 Ford Ranger is still one of the wiser choices in the compact truck market.

Whether it's image or utility that attracts you to a compact truck, Ford stands ready to seduce you into its strong-selling Ranger. The standard engine on 2WD models a new 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine. A 3.0-liter V6 (no longer flexible fuel) is standard on 4WD models, and the Explorer's SOHC 4.0-liter V6 is now available packing 207 hp at 5250 rpm and 238 lb-ft at 3000 rpm. That's a 47 hp jump over the previous pushrod 4.0-liter motor.

With the larger V6, acceleration is now even more sprightly, especially from a standstill or when merging and passing. As before, the big engine comes only with the five-speed automatic transmission. Rotary-knob controlled four-wheel drive is a unique pulse-vacuum system.

Well-controlled overall, with good steering feedback, Rangers handle easily, corner capably, maneuver neatly, and stay reasonably stable on curves. Occupants aren't likely to complain about the ride, either, though it can grow bouncy around town. Gas mileage isn't the greatest with the big engine and automatic.

The four-door SuperCab--available in 2WD and 4WD--makes it easy to access the storage compartment from either side of the truck, a big assist when loading cargo and gear. The standard rear doors on SuperCab models hinge off the corner pillars of the cab and swing out 90 degrees from the doorsill. There are no B-pillars to obstruct loading. Completing the Ford Ranger pickup line are regular cab, short- and long-wheelbase 2WD and 4WD models.

The Ranger is equipped with dual airbags and side-impact protection beams. The rear doors for 2WD and 4WD SuperCab models also have side-door intrusion beams for extra safety protection. ABS is standard on all models, and the passenger airbag can be shut off using a dash-mounted switch.

Ford has had the best-selling small trucks in the country for years. Fun to drive, sharp looking and well built, the Ranger delivers a solid compact-pickup experience. Its most serious competition comes from the Dodge Dakota and Toyota Tacoma models. The Dakota is slightly larger and offers V8 power, but we still recommend a look at the updated 2001 Ranger.

2001 Ford Ranger Future Generations

Ford Ranger Overview and History

Henry Ford started the company in 1902 with $ 28,000 in cash from twelve investors, among which were John and Horace Dodge, who would later found the Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle Company. He was 40 years when he first established the company's first factory on Bagley Street, Detroit.

He would later incorporate the firm on June 16, 1903. Ford Motor Company would go on and label their models chronologically in alfabetical order, starting with the Model A to the Model K and Model S, which was Ford's last right-hand steering vehicle. Then, in 1908 Ford introduced the Model T, which was designed by Childe Harold Wills and two Hungarian immigrants, Joseph A. Galamb and Eugene Farkas. This model proved to be of quintessential Ford vehicle, placing the company among the most influential automotive brands in history.

The Ford Model T was reliable, practical and affordable, which made it a big hit in the US, where it was advertised as the middle-class man's vehicle. The car's success compelled Ford to expand his business and layout the basics of mass production principles in 1913 with the introduction of the world's first vehicle assembly line. By 1912, production figures for the Model T alone reached nearly 200,000 units.

This organizational innovation brought in the vehicle construction field allowed Ford to reduce chassis assembly time by as much as 10 hours, dropping from 12 ½ h to 2h 40 min.

Besides ensuring the efficiency of the production process, Ford turned his company into an interactive entity by announcing a new profit-sharing policy. This would grant buyers a cut of profits if sales reached 300,000. As expected, sales effortlessly reached the 300k threshold and went even further to hit a record 501,000 in 1915.

As part of a new set of financial tactics, Ford provided working places for the disabled who otherwise had a hard time finding a job, reduced work shifts and doubled all employee's salaries. Changes like these sparked a tremendous sales increase while also setting the base of modern working conditions.

Still, the US and Canadian market would prove to be too small to fit Ford's plans. By the mid 20's, the Ford label had crossed the ocean and reached England, France, Germany, Denmark, Austria as well as distant Australia. The company's activity on European grounds further helped the brand's revenue growth.

War would not shake the Ford company as bad as other car makers. Post WWI improvements include the introduction of four-wheel brakes and a series of new vehicle releases to match new consumer demands. In 1922 Ford entered the luxury car segment with the acquisition of the Lincoln Motor Company, named after Abraham Lincoln whom Henry Ford admired.

Ford Motor Co. was one of the few big American corporations to survive the Great Depression, although the plummeting automotive sales led the company to scale down its operations and lay off many workers. In May 1929, Ford Motor Co. signed an agreement with the Soviet Union to provide technical assistance until 1938 to construct an integrated automobile-manufacturing plant at Nizhny Novgorod, in exchange for the Soviets purchasing $ 13 million worth of automobiles and parts. Under this agreement many American engineers and skilled auto workers went in 1932 to work on the Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod (GAZ), or Gorki Automotive Plant. The few who remained in the Soviet Union after the completion of the plant fell victims to Stalin's Great Terror, ending either shot or exiled to Soviet gulags.

With the arrival of WWII Ford increased its influence on the global stage becoming an active player in the war effort, a thing underlined by US President Franklin Roosevelt referring to Detroit as the "Arsenal of Democracy." When the US War Department handed production of B-24 Liberator airplanes to Ford, the output rose to 20 airplanes per day instead of only one per day managed by the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation.

After WWII Ford continued its passenger vehicle operations and in 1955 introduced the iconic Thunderbird model. Then it introduced the Edsel brand in 1958, which proved to be a failure and was dissolved in 1960. Part Edsel's failure as an automotive brand resided in the onset of the 1957 recession in the States and the vehicle's high price tag.

Ford Motor Co. managed to get back up from its Edsel failure with the introduction of the Falcon model in 1960 and the Mustang in 1964. The company's next major step was represented by the formation of Ford Europe division in 1967.

Ford plunged into a state of brand-fatigue that would bring the company to the point of near bankruptcy. Following major sales losses in the 2000's, Ford was pinned against the wall by debts and the imminence of closing down.

Preferring to make it back on its own, Ford mortgaged all of its assets in 2006. As of then, the company has releases a variety of new models both under the Ford brand name and the rest of the sub-brands it owns such as fresher and edgier Mercuries and flashier Lincolns, Ford's luxury division. Business in Europe has also been good for Ford, especially after the introduction of the Focus model in 1997 and although it hasn't fully recovered, it's definitely on the way to regaining popularity.

Never getting rid of it!!!
I bought this Ranger two and a half years ago with 146000 miles on it. Now it has 162000 miles on it and it still hasn't had any major or even moderate problems it's entire life. The acceleration on the vehicle is outstanding with the 4.0L and it feels like I have a V8. The only lacking thing on the vehicle is the lack of room for people in the back and also the comfort of the back seats.

Best light trucks on the market
This is my second Ranger. Between the two I've owned I've driven a combined 400,000 miles over 20 years on the 2.3/2.5 engine with manual transmission. The first was bought new with the XLT Lariat package. The second is an XL bought with 65,000 miles in it. This truck isn't a sports car. It isn't a luxury car. If you want these why are you buying a truck at all? It's a truck and it looks and runs like one. As it should. But it corners as well as my Spitfire and feels nearly as sporty with the excellent 4 speed/overdrive gearbox and peppy engine. And it's comfortable and pleasant in the cab though not a luxury car. The interior is basic. It is well laid out and attractively designed enough, even in the XL base model configuration. In both my trucks the gauges are complete and well laid out. The seats are comfortable whether on longer drives or getting groceries. The interior is durable and well made. But yes, the extended cab would be nice for briefcases, groceries, dogs and so on. And this is not a family car or people carrier. Know what it does better than any of the 17 or so vehicles I've owned before and during my 22 years of Ranger ownership? It starts, drives and stops with reasonable fuel economy every time. It hauls tools and material for my work and tows my tent trailer and small boat without problems. It costs little to maintain, being common and American. And repairs are extremely rare and pretty reasonable. I'm terrible at maintanance. Over 400,000 miles I've changed oil at most a dozen times. Rotating tires or chassis lubes? Never. But both trucks combined cost something like $ 1000 in non maintanance repair at my mechanic's over 20 years. With my ridiculous neglect the truck simply just keeps going. Basically the bulletproof reliability of my Ranger enables me to afford the maintanance of British and Italian sports cars, to which the term 'reliable' will never be applied. For me the manual transmission and peppy motor are just fun to drive as well. The handling and braking are good or a bit better than that. The ride is sporty. But they do bump steer when not loaded, and they are relatively noisy compared to a mid range passenger car or sport utility. Resale? In my area, suburban Puget Sound, I could sell the truck I bought 7 years ago for pretty much what I paid for it. After 7 years of hard use. These trucks are among the best things Ford ever made, itself a high compliment.

Great used truck
It's a great truck. I paid less than 6500 for it and am very satisfied. Only problem to date is a airbag warning light. Right doors rattled a bit but tightening them resolved. Great styling, great looks. I would recommend it to anyone.

Nice handme down that has lasted
We got this truck from a family member at 270000. Then my dad gave it to me around 300000. It now has 335000 and is still running well. I really like this vehicle, it's no looker but I just like driving it, can open window and rest my arm on the door. 3.0 engine is really reliable but a gas guzzler for sure. Of course now since this vehicle is 19 years old a lot of parts have been replaced. But just maintain it and I'm pretty sure it will last longer
potsubway,
Constant issues.
I have had issues with the motor, the battery, the interior lights blew out. The windows don’t roll up properly. The glove box opens when going over bumps. Tailgate falls down constantly. The brakes have broken multiple times. I’ve been driving this truck for less than a year and have already spent thousands in extra repairs to keep it running. Not to mention it is a total gas guzzler. I get between 12 to 15 miles per gallon. The gauges don’t work either so I never know the oil pressure, engine temperature or how full the gas tank is. The air conditioning also is broken, as are the seals to the doors. Driving in any kind of weather is horrible as the truck slips on wet pavement constantly despite the fact it has brand new tires. The windshield wipers don’t work well either. Poor turning radius makes city driving very difficult. Too small to haul much with it and too small for more than one passenger. The back seats are utterly worthless. I fully regret buying this vehicle.
superscriptwrench,
It's a good little truck.
It is great in snow with the right tires. Put it in 4 wheel and it can get through anything. However, gas mileage is dismal. I have seen diesels that get better gas milage. Obviously the cab is SMALL. I am small so it isn't so bad, but if you are tall and wide or short and wide is is horrible. The seats in back are useless other than organizing tools. As long as you are short there is a decent amount of room behind the seats for tools. Towing is fine as long as the load is light. You aren't going to haul a double axel trailer for a long distance without overheating the tranny. It lacks power for traveling up steep hills. Other than that it can take a licking and keep on ticking. I never had any serious problems. I am definitely not a ford guy but this has been a good truck. The older trucks are built the best unlike these pieces of plastic they have now.
primppicalo,
Best vehicle I have ever owned!
I have had this vehicle from day one--only have 53000 miles on it--the only problem I have with it is I cannot keep the wheels from spinning in rain or snow--a lot of power ( 4 liter six )!

Very nice
Dependable little truck.

A Great Truck to Have
I have had this vehicle since 2004 and it was used. The next owner is getting a bargain from me. Where I prefer a truck to a car, I don't haul as much around as I once did. I think with the mechanical work on this vehicle the people buying it will get much use out of it. Ford Rangers are still best in class.
guapocolumn,
Made Cheap!
Everything about this truck is good except for its transmission, Will be selling mine for what ever I can get for it.
meiosisrocky,
great truck
had to put upper and lower ball joints on it and a inter tie rod end other wise a great truck
billfemur,
Best truck ever
This is a great truck, I bought the truck with about 100,00 miles on it and put another 62,000 since(i've owned it for about 5 years). I never had any engine or transmission issues. If you are looking for a first car or just something cheap and reliable I would recommend buying this vehicle.
lichentwotinos,
Very Dependable
I have had this truck since 2004 from a Lease turn in. I have had no major problems with this and wish all could have been this reliable. Tempted to hang onto it. The only so-called major item needed replaced was the 4X4 computer module to engage the transfer case. Other than that just the usual maintenance upkeep.
revealoffended,
never had any problems....great vehicle
Also has small rear doors and two "jump" seats...in excellent condition.....has bug deflector..

2007 Ford Ranger Regular Cab
"What I’d like in a 2019+ Ranger..."
In a few years, after the troubles with the new Rangers get straightened out, I might buy a newer Ford Ranger. I currently have a 2007 Ford Ranger 4x4 with the 4.0, 5-speed, long bed and xlt. It’s great, I like the platform of it, but as it gets older, I start thinking of a new vehicle. I’d like something slightly larger and the only major gripe I have with the new Rangers is how short the beds are. But, if Ford could build into the bed, a bed extender, something that completely folded apart and slid away, maybe into the tailgate and inside of the bed sides, that would be cool. I don’t always need that long of a bed, but when I do, like when moving a ladder, couch, lumber, etc. a 5.1’ bed turned into an almost 7’ bed would be great. Other suggestions... royal blue, orange-red, pebble tan interior options, maybe make that plastic piece around the Ranger fender badges, pebble tan, royal blue or orange-red. Aluminum panel on the back of the tailgate with F O R D on the lower right corner, looking like the 83-87 xlt Ford Ranger tailgates. Aluminum on those plastic lips around the wheel wells. But yea.. getting tired of shifting gears, haha. A 10-speed auto with a powerful 2.3 seems nice. I just hope the electronics last a long time in these newer vehicles.
