The 2000 Ford Focus is one of the best small cars your money can buy, if the styling and the seat comfort suit you.
"Smart design and spirited driving" were the guiding forces behind the development of the Focus. Targeted to be the new volume leader in Ford sales worldwide, the Focus is a highly evolved compact car with "New Edge" styling, a roomy interior, and excellent road manners.
Ford offers the Focus in three body styles: a three-door hatchback, a sedan and a wagon. The sedan can be ordered in one of three trim levels, starting with the base LX model and going up to the midlevel SE and highline ZTS trim. Wagons are available in SE trim only while the three-door coupe comes with a standard performance-oriented ZX3 package.
The base drivetrain for LX models is a 2.0-liter, 107-horsepower engine and five-speed manual transmission. This same drivetrain is standard in SE sedans, but ZTS sedans and the ZX3 coupe get a more powerful 130-horsepower, 2.0-liter Zetec engine as standard equipment. The Zetec makes 130 pound-feet of torque at an easily accessible 4,250 rpm. This is more peak torque than a Civic EX or Mazda Protege and more useable peak torque than anything else offered in the subcompact class.
The Focus rides on a four-wheel independent suspension with MacPherson struts up front and stabilizer bars both front and rear (except on the wagon). LX models come standard with 14-inch steel wheels while SE, ZTS and ZX3 models get 15-inch aluminum wheels with 60-series tires. Antilock brakes are standard on the ZTS sedan and optional on the LX, SE, and ZX3 cars.
Besides its cutting-edge style and highly functional interior, the Focus boasts such innovative features as child-safety-seat anchors in the rear outboard seat locations and a glow-in-the-dark rear seat back release to prevent trunk entrapment. All models come with rear defrost, manual seat-height adjustments, a center console and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat with flip-up rear seat cushion.
Ford is serious about retaining its share of the worldwide subcompact market. The Focus reflects not only the company's dedication to this goal, but also its ability to make solid, practical transportation for the 21st century.
Henry Ford started the company in 1902 with $ 28,000 in cash from twelve investors, among which were John and Horace Dodge, who would later found the Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle Company. He was 40 years when he first established the company's first factory on Bagley Street, Detroit.
He would later incorporate the firm on June 16, 1903. Ford Motor Company would go on and label their models chronologically in alfabetical order, starting with the Model A to the Model K and Model S, which was Ford's last right-hand steering vehicle. Then, in 1908 Ford introduced the Model T, which was designed by Childe Harold Wills and two Hungarian immigrants, Joseph A. Galamb and Eugene Farkas. This model proved to be of quintessential Ford vehicle, placing the company among the most influential automotive brands in history.
The Ford Model T was reliable, practical and affordable, which made it a big hit in the US, where it was advertised as the middle-class man's vehicle. The car's success compelled Ford to expand his business and layout the basics of mass production principles in 1913 with the introduction of the world's first vehicle assembly line. By 1912, production figures for the Model T alone reached nearly 200,000 units.
This organizational innovation brought in the vehicle construction field allowed Ford to reduce chassis assembly time by as much as 10 hours, dropping from 12 ½ h to 2h 40 min.
Besides ensuring the efficiency of the production process, Ford turned his company into an interactive entity by announcing a new profit-sharing policy. This would grant buyers a cut of profits if sales reached 300,000. As expected, sales effortlessly reached the 300k threshold and went even further to hit a record 501,000 in 1915.
As part of a new set of financial tactics, Ford provided working places for the disabled who otherwise had a hard time finding a job, reduced work shifts and doubled all employee's salaries. Changes like these sparked a tremendous sales increase while also setting the base of modern working conditions.
Still, the US and Canadian market would prove to be too small to fit Ford's plans. By the mid 20's, the Ford label had crossed the ocean and reached England, France, Germany, Denmark, Austria as well as distant Australia. The company's activity on European grounds further helped the brand's revenue growth.
War would not shake the Ford company as bad as other car makers. Post WWI improvements include the introduction of four-wheel brakes and a series of new vehicle releases to match new consumer demands. In 1922 Ford entered the luxury car segment with the acquisition of the Lincoln Motor Company, named after Abraham Lincoln whom Henry Ford admired.
Ford Motor Co. was one of the few big American corporations to survive the Great Depression, although the plummeting automotive sales led the company to scale down its operations and lay off many workers. In May 1929, Ford Motor Co. signed an agreement with the Soviet Union to provide technical assistance until 1938 to construct an integrated automobile-manufacturing plant at Nizhny Novgorod, in exchange for the Soviets purchasing $ 13 million worth of automobiles and parts. Under this agreement many American engineers and skilled auto workers went in 1932 to work on the Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod (GAZ), or Gorki Automotive Plant. The few who remained in the Soviet Union after the completion of the plant fell victims to Stalin's Great Terror, ending either shot or exiled to Soviet gulags.
With the arrival of WWII Ford increased its influence on the global stage becoming an active player in the war effort, a thing underlined by US President Franklin Roosevelt referring to Detroit as the "Arsenal of Democracy." When the US War Department handed production of B-24 Liberator airplanes to Ford, the output rose to 20 airplanes per day instead of only one per day managed by the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation.
After WWII Ford continued its passenger vehicle operations and in 1955 introduced the iconic Thunderbird model. Then it introduced the Edsel brand in 1958, which proved to be a failure and was dissolved in 1960. Part Edsel's failure as an automotive brand resided in the onset of the 1957 recession in the States and the vehicle's high price tag.
Ford Motor Co. managed to get back up from its Edsel failure with the introduction of the Falcon model in 1960 and the Mustang in 1964. The company's next major step was represented by the formation of Ford Europe division in 1967.
Ford plunged into a state of brand-fatigue that would bring the company to the point of near bankruptcy. Following major sales losses in the 2000's, Ford was pinned against the wall by debts and the imminence of closing down.
Preferring to make it back on its own, Ford mortgaged all of its assets in 2006. As of then, the company has releases a variety of new models both under the Ford brand name and the rest of the sub-brands it owns such as fresher and edgier Mercuries and flashier Lincolns, Ford's luxury division. Business in Europe has also been good for Ford, especially after the introduction of the Focus model in 1997 and although it hasn't fully recovered, it's definitely on the way to regaining popularity.

SE 4dr Wagon
Fun to drive work horse of a little wagon.
The focus now has >173000 miles. Principal drivers are my wife and daughter. They like that it is easy to drive & park, and has very good visibility through the back and side windows. I recently replaced the plastic thermostat housing, a wheel bearing, ball joint, and rear stabilizers. most money I've spent on the car in many years. Engine is still strong and the car tracks nicely at 90mph
Older:
The ztec is a great little engine. my car has 162000 miles (260000km). originally paid $ 16280USD ttl included. i've been through two sets of all weather tires and two sets of winter tires (pass driving is much easier with snow tires). I've replaced the brakes twice, one set of struts, timing belt replaced (yes, it is a necessary maintenance item at about 100K), two sets of spark plugs, an EGR valve and an O2 sensor and tie rod ends thanks to the crappy seattle roads. Oil changes every 5000 miles and transmission oil changed every 30K miles. I just replaced the battery for the second time in 15 years. It's been a super inexpensive car to own. and I rely on it for 350 mile trips on a regular basis.
If you find a well maintained 2000-2004 SW with a ztec engine, it should be a fine car to own and drive.

Mine was good
My focus has been going strong for 184k miles, which probably isn't the norm. It idles rough from an unbalanced engine. The power locks and a/c don't work. The headlights are easily scratched and get really dim. The hatch doesn't hold open in the cold. I've had to replace the ignition ($ 300) struts ($ 400) ball joints ($ 500) and vacuum hose ($ 80) in the 60k miles I have owned it.

Very Reliable
Well balanced, handling and solid feel without the road noise !!!
Overall a great designed and attractive hatchback.
Ford Focus ZX3 got daughter home in her 1st blizzard at nite.
Drove me to work for 8 years x 70miles each day.
5 very long trips over 1000 miles.
I even slept in the back for 2 nites.
Now at 112k miles,
everything still works fine.
I did change the following once:
Battery, Brakes, Tires, Thermostat housing, Belts, hoses, filters,
front tie rod links, and plugs.
Nothing on this car is hard to work on either.

Great commuter car.
I owned my focus for awhile now and I am well over 200k miles and it still runs like new and can drive anywhere while still getting great gas mileage. On average I get about 29-30 with mixed driving. The car is very reliable and has never let me down the only things I needed to replace on it was the 14 year old brake booster and a radiator hose that dry rotted. As long as you maintain the fluids and drive the car normally it should last you 200k miles+. Enough room to comfortably fit 3 adults and a 4th with a little effort. The car does great in the snow with the right tiers on the front. If your looking for a nice affordable car for daily driving look no further.

2005 Ford Focus
"Love my car!"
I got my Focus used in high school with minor damage from a parking lot collision. Nevertheless, it quickly became my favorite car because of its versatility. When I moved to college, I was able to take all of my stuff in this car by folding down the rear seats. The manual transmission shifts smoothly and makes it a very enjoyable car to drive in a spirited manner. In college, I used my Focus as a delivery vehicle, quickly putting on miles of stop-and-go driving, hard acceleration, and heavy braking. Through it all, my Focus drives just as well as it did when I got it. I'm almost certain my next car will be a Focus!
