Compact trucks are hot sellers, and GMC's entry into that market delivers hard-to-beat value--even if it doesn't stand at the top of its class in every way. A driver airbag with knee bolster and daytime running lights are standard. All Sonomas are equipped with four-wheel antilock braking, and a handy side access panel is optional on the extended cab.

Sonomas can be fitted to suit just about any requirement, from strict utility to sporty style and performance. Choose from three wheelbases, two cab types, a regular-size or long cargo bed in Fleetside or Sportside configuration, and two- or four-wheel drive. Whew! You still have to consider three trim levels, five suspension systems, three engines (a four or two V6 choices), and manual or automatic shift.

GMC changes little for 1997. Extended cab models can be equipped with the Sport Suspension for the first time, and powertrains have been improved for better efficiency. Order bucket seats and a center console, and you'll get a floor-mounted shifter rather than one sticking out of the steering column. Remote keyless entry key fobs are redesigned, and Fairway Green and Smoky Caramel replace Radar Purple and Bright Teal on the color chart. Plug-in half-shafts on 4WD models are lighter-weight and easier to service.

With the high-output, 180-horsepower Vortec 4300 V6 on tap, and the Sport Suspension package, the Sonoma performs as energetically as high-priced sports cars did a decade or so ago. By any definition, that's progress. The Sportside box and sharp five-spoke alloys nicely complement the top powertrain and suspension, turning the Sonoma into a true factory sport truck. For off-roading duties, GMC offers the Highrider, riding three-ply all-terrain tires and sporting a reinforced frame (four inches wider, two inches taller) and toughened suspension. Either Sonoma outperforms the Ranger on or off the pavement, but when it comes to interior fittings, only the Nissan Truck is more archaic.

Inside, Sonomas and Chevrolet S-Series pickups are virtually identical, with a roomy cab marred by an aesthetic disaster of a dashboard, which looks and feels as though it were lifted from some defunct Buick project, and uncomfortable bucket seats. A passenger airbag is unavailable. On extended cab trucks, an optional left side access panel makes loading passengers or cargo into the rear of the cab much easier, but takes the place of one of the fold-out jump seats in the rear.

Ford's Ranger, Dodge's Dakota, and Toyota's Tacoma come across as more refined, and their sticker prices reflect this impression. In compact-truck value per dollar, though, GMC just might deliver all the goods you're seeking.

GMC Sonoma Overview and History

Synonymous with high-end trucks and highly customizable SUV's the GMC brand has been around for some 100 years. Standing for a history of take-overs, the name GMC began with the establishment of the “Rapid Motor Vehicle Company” in 1901. Owned by Max Gabrowski, the company built some of the earliest commercial trucks ever built.

Despite its fortunate premature involvement in truck development,  Gabrowski's establishment would not survive on its own.  GM, whose popularity was soaring thanks to Business-whiz Durant bought the company in 1909 setting the base for the General Motors Truck Company that later turned into GMC.

GM's buy-out-smaller-companies skills allowed he giant to encompass another manufacturer the same year, this time the “Reliance Motor Car Company”. The latter was regarded as the missing ingredient and was quickly merged with “Rapid” to form “GMC Truck” in 1911. One year later, Gm would boast its new brand at the New York International Auto Show.

Having garnered the attention needed to start production, GM focused on truck building, having made about 20,000 trucks in 1912. GMC's involvement was barely noticeable with only 372 self-units.

Although GMC was timidly developing within GM boundaries, it did have  spark attention through a series of country cross-overs. In 1916, a GMC truck covered the distance form Seattle to New York on a thirty-day long drive while 14 years later, a second GMC truck made it from NY to San Francisco in 5 days and 30 minutes.

As WWI came to end, GMC would begin a new chapter in the automotive industry. The war had thrown back many companies, allowing survivors such as the large GM to scavenge for prey. In 1925, a Chocago, Illinois based bus manufacturer called Yellow Coach was partially absorbed into General Motors. BY 1943, GM had gained full ownership of Yellow Coach and transformed it into the GM Truck and Coach Division. GMC has also involved in the production of urban and transit buses throughout the 70's and 80's after which production was stopped as a result of being outrun by competition.

Resuming their regular truck-making activity, GMC joined the row of suppliers for the US Army during WWII, having built 600,000 trucks throughout the conflict. Post war times found GMC experimenting with utility vehicles such as Fire trucks and ambulances as well as heavy duty trucks. Despite the reputation GMC had earned, extensions in other market segments did not meet expectations and were dropped. SUV, pick up and light truck production was re-emphasized and has remained unchanged ever since.

GMC has held on its older designs like sister-competitor Chevrolet has, until recently when  the company brushed the dust off its shoulders through the introduction of Acadia, a curvier model highlighting the segregation between GMC and Chevrolet designs. Presently, GMC is enjoying a greater popularity and sales in Canada rather then US where Chevy trucks still hold a grip on the first place.

Good truck
I've owned this truck since new and it has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. I have 170,000 miles on it and it has never let me down once. GM built a good one in this little truck. Thank you GM.

Excellent
The current Sonoma I drive has been well cared for and has had few major repairs. I received it from my family in 2003, but was purchased in 9/1997. My experience has been that it requires very little maintence and was well built. Except for regular oil and lube, has endured large amounts of travel in the last 3 years has held up very well. The model I have is not the most comfortable, but I am satisfied with design. The a/c performs well as well a the heater.

Awesome Pickup
This truck drives like a car, and has the comfort like one. Very fun to drive in snow has superb handling. Very powerful engine. Only problems I had was the weather stripping dry rotting and it rusted really bad both sides of the cabin, lower part. Other than that really great truck. A must buy

terrible build
I do love my truck its looks good. Other than that since I've owned it it has spent more time in a parking spot. One thing after another from a tensioner to the transmission has approx 87,000 miles. the transmission is a good one I've reseached it and it has many many applications I think that the inside apecs should have been researched a bit more this is probally the nost popular transmission the 4L60 just has different for each vehicle Never should have put a 4 cylinder automatic in an extended cab

"For it's size, can't ask for a tougher truck."
Purchased used. Have driven it for 15 yrs. For it's toy size, this little truck has out done the full size guys. Perfect driving, Handling, Hauling abilities. A little of a nuisance on fuel pumps, in my 15 years have had to have 4 replaced. 3rd door handle poorly designed, plastic is thin and I breaks regularly. Other then the above mentioned, this truck holds up to everything you could ask of it. It wasn't until around 240,000 miles that the tranny went, considering GM gives that tranny 130,000 to 180,000. So, giving this truck regular maintenance, gets you a few extra miles beyond factory design. You can't go wrong, especially with the ZR2 version! Love this truck. Won't part with it. Factory refurbished transmission, a few cosmetic touch ups and it's ready to go again!

"original owner(has new vehicle sticker)"
Wife hardly drove. Has been garaged all its life. If you are looking for a truly low mileage primo truck with a v-6 engine, you could tow up to 5600 lbs, with a tow hitch, 3.42 axel ratio,4w antilock bracke. Truck has been maintained and serviced at a southern cal gmc dealership, no wrecks, no snow, no salt air.
