I am shocked! I have less than 30K miles on my mini - it is driven very limited and I started to experience some drag on the clutch when driving - as well as a loud screech - I took the car to Mini yesterday and they called me today to tell me the clutch has gone out -- I also purchased the extended warranty - however this is NOT covered by extended warranty as it is considered normal wear and tear........ Really? They now want me to spend $ 3000 for a new clutch -- outrageous.....

I bought this car used with 17,000. At 36,000 I had to replace the clutch. This was covered under the additional maintenance warranty that I bought for $ 2500. Now the car has just over 50,000 (i.e. no maintenance warranty) and I am being told the clutch only has 25% of life left in it and needs to be replaced again. I called my mini dealer and they said this is a wear and tear part and is due to how I drive the car. I am not sure how the first clutch can last 36,000 and this one only last 14,000. They suggested that I call Mini USA. I did so and asked them to cover the cost of this clutch. They are looking into the issue and will advise but told me it was unlikely as it is a wear and tear item. I mentioned the vast number of online posts about premature clutch wear in a mini and they said they understood my complaint. They will advise in 3-5 days by which time I will have paid for and collected my vehicle.

I noticed a burning smell and the clutch was slipping between neutral and first gear. My car has an extended warranty however I was told that this is standard maintenance and not covered. Mini wants to charge me $ 4200 for this. Additionally they are telling me I need new brakes. I religiously serviced the vehicle and am outraged. For a vehicle for 22000 miles this is unacceptable. Will go back to Toyotas or Subarus. Cars last forever and are reliable.

I bought the car used and two days later the clutch burnt out.

    Clutch slipping

  • 2006 17,000 Miles
Bought the car used with 9600 miles. Now 17000 and the clutch is going out. Dealer says I should buy an extended maintenance warranty to cover the cost ($ 3200 just for the clutch replacement, $ 2000 for the warranty). What a ripoff!

  • 2006 18,000 Miles
Clutch worn out at 18,000 miles. Replaced and then wore out again at 33,000 miles. Dealer said it is the hills in San Francisco.

  • 2006 133,000 Miles
Took two days and clutch was no more. What a POS. Now it's going to cost $ 3K.

Bought the car 7 months ago. The clutch felt weird then. Just a couple days before I stopped driving it; the second to last day, the clutch in first gear would not engage until at 3-4,000 rpms. Then after 15mph, and in second gear, everything after that is fine. Then the front of the car started vibrating like sh*t in a couple hours from then. Next day, car comes to a rolling stop on highway and will not shift into any gear. Now I realize how expensive this is going to be to fix. Lame.

Possible clutch problem.Car will not start with clutch to floor, trans in neutral E brake on & battery charged.

  • 2006 40,000 Miles
After a long trip, 3500 miles, the transmission without prior warning will not engage. The clutch smells hot, there is pressure on the clutch pedal and the shifter shifts just no movement.

Blew out clutch while in 3 hrs worth of traffic, on a slight incline!

  • 2006 61,000 Miles
Two repair shops have alerted me to a potential clutch replacement. At 61,000, that is perhaps when a clutch should be replaced. The quote of $ 2,900 from the MINI dealer does not seem to be a reasonable repair cost though. This site shows estimates between $ 1,200-$ 2,400, so I will shop different repair sites listed on this site.

Started having a "burning clutch smell" about a week ago, today sound of metal/clutch slipping. Car is 7.5 years old but only 38K miles.Given that I've had to have the engine walnut blasted (once under warranty), the tension bracket on the timing belt replaced, the water pump recalled, and now the airbags recalled - yeah, whomever said BMW went cheap on the engineering for this car had it nailed. Getting it fixed and then selling it to someone who cares more for the pep and look than maintenance.

  • 2006 30,000 Miles
Felt clutch slipping and took the vehicle in for service around 30,000 mi.

  • 2006 40,000 Miles
    Clutch failed at 40,000 miles

  • 2006 27,000 Miles
Clutch went out at 27K--- dealership told me this was considered normal wear and tear..... really?

  • 2006 38,000 Miles
Driven MT cars for 35 years, so I know what I am doing. Had this as original owner since 2007. A year ago the clutch pedal seemed high but otherwise worked OK. Lately, the clutch began slipping whenever accelerating, easy to hear and feel, especially when shifting into 3 or 4 merging onto the freeway. Hello, MINI?? Do you see a disaster in the making? This is AFTER I had my car repaired 5,000 miles ago for the timing chain tensioner fault which put me back $ 2,400 after I complained about a much higher price for the repair. FYI, I am diligent about maintenance, etc.

My clutch failed on our 2007 Cooper S, I think it should last more than 45,000 miles

Burning clutch smell, friction point rising ( too much play in pedal ), mushy or bumpy feeling at the bottom of pedal travel.Fighting with dealer on diagnosis and solution. I was told to pay for whatever it was out of pocket.
