Same problem like everybody else here. Bought it used 1 1/2 years ago with 118,000 miles. I filled up the coolant of my Explorer every couple of weeks for the last months and last weekend all the coolant was under my car. Ford replaced the radiator and 2 hoses, they charged me $ 1,300. I don't know if the previous owner had the same problem already. Fortunately (because of this site) I knew about the PCM software update and after telling them they double checked it and found out, that my car needs the update. What if I didn't ask? I'm just glad that this didn't happened during my 3,000 mile road trip a month ago (especially in the Death Valley).

All the coolant leaked out onto my garage floor overnight. Repair shop replaced the radiator and mentioned that radiators for 2006 Ford Explorers are becoming hard to locate due to the number of complaints that are being reported recently. I contacted the Ford dealer prior to getting my vehicle into a nearby shop. The Ford service reps never bothered to get back to me on this problem.

Engine kept "reving" when accelerating out of low gear. Had transmission serviced twice without any resolution. Finally drove car around with tech and diagnostic computer. Saw temp gauge going up and down slightly when accelerating. Checked radiator and found crack in seam. Clearly a defect but ford would not cover repair. $ 900 to replace radiator with only a 1 year warranty.

Coolant pressure leak, smell of antifreeze at the radiator. Fluid loss under pressure. System pressure tested. Radiator was replaced at 37000 miles due to road debris. Crack in new radiator with only 50000 miles on it.

coolant leak/overheating light came on, the car then started to sputter, make some noise. When I had a mechanic look at it he stated that the coolant, oil, and other engine fluids mixed together. The car is not currently running. I have had problems with this car since its purchase, wind sound when driving on the highway I was told I needed some type of kit for $ 300.00, then after an "upgrade" that I had no control over done by some satellite my navigation stopped working, sync on the phone would work sporadically. I was told I needed a new computerized component, after I was initially told I needed to buy the upgrade SD card ($ 145), which did not work and now I am being told the panel does not work and will need to be replaced 795.00. The car is only 8 years old, so I am not sure why there have been these technical issues. Also it should be known that I did regular maintenance and still am being told now that I have to invest another 6,000 to now replace the engine because of the coolant leak problem. I am frustrated and will never by another Ford. This is unfortunate because I have had Fords since I bought my first car, but of recent their customer services has gone downhill, their products are no longer durable and Ford does not seem interested in making their product better.

08/01/2015 - Took car for regular oil change at our local Quicklane and found out that plastic intake manifold is cracked. The total cost with parts and labor $ 510.I am writing this report as I am waiting for the vehicle to be fixed. After reading multiple reports online, it seems like this is a very common problem with Explorers and relate to design/manufacturing problem. I checked with the service manager to pull a report for extended warranties by Ford on this part he found none for this particular part.Very disappointed with the product.

Check engine light went on & What I initialed thought was an oil leak, it turned out to be antifreeze on the ground. The local mechanic replaced the radiator & is taking it to a ford dealer for a software update which includes new cooling parameters. Hopefully this will keep it from happening again.

Radiator leaks. The radiator repair man says Explorers are notorious for this, sometimes needing radiator repair/replacement every other year.

Car needed a new radiator, due to leaking (driveway spots). Extended warranty purchased through CarMax covered all but a $ 50 deductible. Have read this is a somewhat common problem for this vehicle.
