2005 Buick Rainier Fuel Level Sensor Failure

The fuel level sensor in the fuel tank may fail causing erratic fuel gauge operation. Our technicians tell us that on high mileage vehicles you may wish to replace the complete fuel pump module assembly if this condition occurs.

On certain 2005 - 2007 vehicles, General Motors has provided a special service policy covering the fuel level sensor, agreeing to pay 50% of the repair cost. This coverage extends for 10 years or 120,000 miles from the original "in service" date of the vehicle. Please contact your local GM dealer for more information.

Eratic fuel gauge after filling up. Low fuel light and alarm sound but gauge sometimes goes back to full. How hard is it to change this sensor and how much should I expect it to cost if I take it somewhere to have it done?

  • 2005 51,000 Miles
Fuel gauge shows empty when full, and bounces around up and down after that.

  • 2005 90,350 Miles
Fuel guage shows empty after filling, sometimes bounces up and down, now it shows empty all the time.

  • 2005 45,000 Miles
We had this fuel sensor problem only about a year after we got this car. At first Gm sent out notification about the problem and offered to fix it for 50% of the cost. So we just kept track of milage when we filled up. Then at about 94000 miles They sent out a notice again in July 2013 that they would cover the whole cost up to 120000 miles, so we went and had it fixed no problem. If any of you paid the 50% to have this done they have a form you can fill out so you can get reimbursed.Ask your dealer. Now if they would just do something about the stinking air suspension that keeps leaking ! No more GM for me after this one. Anybody want to buy a lowrider?

  • 2005 80,000 Miles
Fuel sensor slowly failed - now permanently on empty. 80,000 is approximate - I have been living with this issue for over a year since I cannot pay to get it fixed.

  • 2005 125,000 Miles
After filling up, the gage will read empty, but will eventaully read correctly. I'm resetting my trip odometer each time I fill up just in case though!

  • 2005 130,000 Miles
Fuel guage stopped working. Dealer said it would be over $ 500 to fix without telling me about the "recall" I did the research & called back. Fixed within a day.

  • 2005 120,000 Miles
replaced at my cost got recall letter after passed mileage allowance

  • 2005 70,000 Miles
    Same problem......

  • 2005 86,476 Miles
Eratic fuel gauge after filling my tank, Shows low fuel and ligh and alarm comes on, than again it will go back to full, I see others have the same proble. Can anyone tell me the cost of replacing the fuel gauge?

  • 2005 133,000 Miles
When I fill the tank the low fuel light comes on and the alert sounds. The gauge will show anything from empty to 2/3 full but never an accurate amount. The dealer I called first never did call back, so after a third call I tried a different dealer who said they would need to do a diagnosis which would cost me $ 120. I guess that is why I will stop driving GM after being a 50 year GM person. Toyota is looking better and better.

  • 2005 94,341 Miles
    fuel gage stopped working

  • 2005 50,000 Miles
The fuel gauge shows that the gas tank is empty even after it was just filled. After 50-100 miles, the gauge shows between 1/8 and 1/4 tank but quickly goes back to empty and and low fuel indicator light comes on.

  • 2005 156,000 Miles
Refuled my car then sensor reported empty

  • 2005 70,000 Miles
the problem starts when the weather is hot, I think. It is chronic, the engine light comes on and the fuel gauge drops to empty. Not repaired yet.

  • 2005 79,000 Miles
Fuel Gage is inaccurate. Low fuel warning will go off even though the tank is full of gasoline.

  • 2005 74,361 Miles
Fuel level sensor has long periods of time that fail to correctly display the correct level of fuel in the Terraza gas tank. Today was a first in that the faulty sensor caused the check engine light to come on. The P043 P code indicated that the fuel level sensor has a circuit high input. Now, it can't pass a smog test and I must have the problem corrected instead of just living it as a known problem. This problem started early for this vehicle, for the past 5 years now.

Not yet fixed. Distance remaining is erratic from 400+ to 0 in the blink of an eye. Or it wil l go from 300 to zero over the course of a few minutes. Fuel guage just drops to empty and warning lights come on.
