1996 Buick LeSabre Fuel Level Sensor Failure

It is common for the fuel level sensor in the fuel tank read the fuel level incorrectly. The sensor must be replaced to correct the condition. Our technicians recommend having the complete fuel pump module replaced on high mileage vehicles.

I now have 132,000 miles on the car and have learned to live with this problem. When I first get into the car I turn the key partially so the gauges read . This brings up an accurate reading of the gas gauge. Only after I start to drive does the gauge move to the full position and stay there.Knowing my average fuel consumption I can calculate how far I can go and still have gas. I never let the tank go below one quarter full.If the gauge stops working completley, I will have it repaired.

fuel level gauge doesn't accurately reflect fuel level. Often indicates full tank, when it may be near empty.

  • 1996 142,000 Miles
Gas gauge stopped reading correctly. Diagnosed by dealer as the gas tank module. Buick wants $ 700 to install new one, parts and labor. What a ripoff. We keep track of mileage but my old Toyotas never had a failure like this in only 10 years!

  • 1996 110,000 Miles
fuel sensor doesn't register the correct level of gas left. false readings

  • 1996 200,000 Miles

fuel gauge goes from 1/4 to 3/4 when tank is under half.

  • 1996 145,000 Miles
When the fuel level gets down to half a tank or less the fuel gauge readings become erratic, have not fixed it.

  • 1996 60,000 Miles
Erratic Fuel Gauge Operation due to faulty plastic on the part. Opted to NOT replace, just watch the mileage on the car and fill tank every 100 miles of in town driving.

  • 1996 105,000 Miles
my fuel gauge will read 1/4 tank, the after I turn a corner it will go up to full and stay there. I know there is only a 1/4 tank. I was told to replace the fuel sensor..

  • 1996 135,000 Miles
mechanic said it would be $ 500 to fix so i didn't. it became erratic at less than half a tank.

  • 1996 153,465 Miles
my gas gauge would only work when it reached the half way mark. anytime before that it read full the whole time. its not a really a big deal though because atleast i wont ever run out of gas haha.
