I just had this problem repaired at my local dealership. It was a clunking noise during turning that did not effect performance but it was annoying. Get the tech to turn the steering wheel a bit so he can hear/feel it. He will be able to diagnose this common problem and effect the repair in about 30 minutes. Required replacement of the intermediate steering shaft which is located just below the steering wheel under the plastic housing. He advised that it is a very common problem but not a safety issue.

slight clunk when you hit a small pot hole,or in sharpe turn.

The grinding or clunking noise happens when turning the wheel. It occurs in cooler weather (late fall to early spring) I assume from the lubricant being less viscous. The car only has 29,000 miles on it but the noise started about 3 years ago. A service bulletin from GM indicates a loss of lubricant.

  • 2012 150,000 Miles
There has been a clunking noise when I turn the wheel left or right. This has been occurring for at least the past 60,000 miles.

    CREEKING FROM STEERING. SLOW SPEEDS.

When the steering wheel is turned, there is a noise that sounds metal to nylon or plastic. There is a sensation of some part of the steering is loading up (hesitating) then releasing suddenly, accompanied with a soft tap. This is only a sensation, I don't believe it hesitates. It occurs either direction of the turn

Have had the clunk noise and have taken it 3 times to different dealers to have it fixed and each time they tell me that the clunk noise will come back. They assusred me it will not cause any safety issues, but it will continue to happen until Buick comes up with a better fix for the problem. I had always considered Buick a high quality product and high quality Brand. It appears they are no longer interested in high quality.

I have the same clunking. My dealer needs to order the new mid shaft and install it. I never had this happen to any car I owned. Where is GM's help? Why is there no recall? $ 225.00 for something that should never go wrong!

Clunking sound when making sharp turns. Stabilitrak light came on twice, then stopped. Originally told repair could be $ 700-1200 to scare me into buying a new car. Guess I'll find out as I'm bringing into GM for service tomorrow.

When I back up or turn there is a creeking noise coming from the bottom of the steering column. Took it the dealership a few times and they could not determine issue. Finally took it back yesterday and they determined that the Intermidate Steering Shaft needs replacing and I am bummed because it's not cover under the powertrain warranty.

Clunk Noise from upper intermediate steering shaft as your turning the wheel. After, 103,000 miles we still have the problem. This always concerned me and over the course of the years GM just said it will go away. Now, with this major recall #14299 and this clunk noise in the steering shaft it concerns us even more.
