2009 Ford Ranger Rear Drum Brakes Grab, Lock when First Driving

Moisture inside the rear brake drum assemblies can cause the rear drum brakes to grab, or lock when first driving. Inspect the rear brakes, replace the rear shoes as needed, and make any adjustments. The back side of the backing plate needs to be sealed where moisture can get into the drums to prevent this from recurring.

Hey there I have a 1999 Ford Ranger 4x4 3.0 with disc front and drum rear. I am having a similar problem with my rear brakes. I have had this truck about 6 months and the rear brakes lock up on the first stop of the day. I have already replaced the wheel cylinders and turned the drums and replaced the shoes. It seemed to quit but then returned. I have also noticed that when taking off from a stop that it seems like the rear brakes have a delay on releasing and that happens all the time. The grabbing feels like it's the drivers rear. I thought that it may be the proportioning valve. Oh and I had a F-150 the same year before the Ranger and I never had a problem like this........

First braking action of the day, rear brakes grab, skid. Occasionally occurs on second stop, then no further braking problem for the day. Very consistent, puts the unsuspecting passenger against the windshield. Examination of the rear brakes show no faults. Reoccurring for the past 6 months. Local dealer, has no idea.

When I pull out for the first time after the truck has sat for a few hours there is a loud pop from the passenger rear drum. There is a noticable grab of the brakes and sometimes the wheel locks up. After backing up and going again it loosens up and not problems until it gets cold again. Going to clean out the drum and readjust the shoes. Will updates once complete.

I have the same problem since I purchased my vehicle it is worse on damp or humid days days. The squeak is horrible and gets glares like I can't afford the upkeep on my vehicle which I have named Blue that has 229,000 miles and I have spent a fortune on to date as I plan to get at least 450,000 miles out of him. I have the logic of it's cheaper to make 3-5 car payments per yr. than 12. I love my little truck just wish the horrible squeak would go away as I have recently spent close to a 1000.00 on the rear end and chg'd the brake's against the mechanic's wish's go figure a mechanic not wishing to replace something he sd. it didn't need them, anyway squeak still there. I even took it back again an said he didn't fix it right so he inspected everything again and it's all correct. Guess I'll have to live with it.
