Debuted in 2006 at the British International Motor Show, the second generation Freelander, marketed as the LR2 in the US, is based on the Ford C1 platform which is also used in the Ford Galaxy, the Ford S-MAX and Volvo S80.

Codenamed CB40, the Freelander was going to be developed in partnership with another automaker, bust since no one stepped up to the plate, Land Rover decided to go at it alone.
