Smooth and precise, the 2019 Toyota Prius is comfortable, quiet and easy to drive. It’s also agile. It’s not a sports car by any stretch of the imagination, but it offers surprisingly sporty handling, which could not be said of previous versions. Body roll in the corners is kept to a minimum, and the steering, although not on par with the Mazda3 or Honda Civic, is light and fairly precise. The ride is agreeable, even on choppy urban boulevards, and it’s very happy on the highway, feeling more substantial than its predecessors, which lacked stability especially in windy conditions. There’s also a satisfying burst of power off the line, which makes the Prius feel quicker than it is. Its zero-to-60-mph time of about 10 seconds isn’t going to thrill, but there’s more than enough power when you need it. And the fuel economy is exceptional, which is of course the point. Drive it like Burt Reynolds in Smokey and the Bandit and you’ll still average over 45 mpg.

AWD-E SYSTEM The Prius’ AWD-e system employs an electric motor at the rear wheels to deliver traction-enhancing all-wheel drive at speeds under 43 miles per hour. At speeds up to 6 mph, the system is fully engaged, helping with acceleration and traction, after which the Prius reverts to front-drive until wheel slippage brings the AWD back on line. TOYOTA SAFETY SENSE P At Toyota, safety is a priority, which is why unlike its competitors, every Prius regardless of trim level comes standard with Toyota’s Safety Sense P technology. The system includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams plus lane-departure warning and assist.

Toyota’s Prius for 2019 gets an interior makeover, with more upscale features like Piano Black trim on the steering wheel and center console, and a reimagined Tesla-like 11.6-inch touch-screen display on the new Limited trim. The seats are wide and supportive, with an impressive amount of legroom both front and rear. The traditional Prius dash concept remains to this day, with the center-mounted instrument cluster placed high up at the windshield’s base. The wireless charging pad is now larger, and the heated-seat buttons moved to a position just forward of the cup holders. Faux leather is offered on higher trims and is also used on the steering wheel that is now heated on XLE and Limited trims.

Priuses of the past were considered boring to look at. They weren’t unattractive, but they didn’t excite either. This time Toyota’s design team took a few chances and the exterior design of the 2019 Toyota Prius is anything but uninteresting. No, it probably won’t win any beauty contests, but its futuristic lines and avant-garde lighting certainly stand out in a crowd. This Prius has presence. It’s larger too, longer, lower and wider than previous models, and more aerodynamic. Its low hoodline doesn’t just cheat the wind to improve fuel economy, it also improves visibility for the driver, which helps in tight parking lots.

The feature list for the basic Prius L Eco makes it clear that “basic” does not mean “stripper” for this car: Witness the dual 4.2-inch customizable color information displays, 6.1-inch color touch screen, 6-speaker AM/FM/CD Entune audio, 2.0 USB port, Bluetooth streaming, Siri eyes-free, 15-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and push-button start, cruise control, tilt/telescope steering column, heated outside mirrors, rearview camera, stability control, traction control and eight airbags. Toyota’s Safety Sense P has full-speed dynamic cruise control, capable of bringing the car to a complete stop. The system also includes a pedestrian-detection feature, lane-departure warning and steering assist, which will make small steering corrections for you, and automatic high-beam headlights.

Options vary by trim and most are grouped into packages. Among the more attractive features are a power tilt/slide moonroof with a sliding sunshade, color head-up display, upgraded touch screen, navigation, Entune 10-speaker JBL audio, advanced voice recognition, as well as the standard Prius LE and XLE features, and a good many others. This year a massive 11.6-inch HD Multimedia Display, which is rivaled only by those in more expensive Teslas, now comes standard on the top-of-the-line Prius Limited. All-wheel drive is available but only on the LE and XLE trims.

Powering the 2019 Toyota Prius is Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive, which has been adapted to a number of the company’s vehicles. It’s also been licensed to other carmakers. It consists of a 95-horsepower 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine, which runs on old-fashioned gasoline, an electric motor and an automatic transmission. Combined output is a respectable 121 horsepower, but it’s the powertrain’s smooth function and delivery that impress, and of course its industry-leading fuel economy. An all-wheel-drive option pairs this powertrain with an electric motor that powers the rear wheels at speeds up to 43 mph. AWD-e is permanently engaged at speeds up to 6 mph, after which it becomes a part-time system only coming online when it senses the front wheels slipping. Toyota Prius Overview and History

The fourth generation Toyota Prius was unveiled at the LA Auto Show in 2015, amazing the masses through its futuristic shapes and promised performance that won't affect fuel economy.
Toyota Jidosha Kabushiki-gaisha or Toyota for short is actually the largest car maker in the entire world, bigger than Ford, GM and anyone else. Their history, like many other car producers, starts with some other product, in this case automatic looms. At some point, in 1933, Kiichiro Toyoda, son to Toyota's founder, decided he wanted to build cars and so he took a trip to Europe to get an idea about gas-powered engines.
The government encouraged such a bold decision mostly because making their own cars would be cheaper and they also needed vehicles for the war with China. Just a year after its foundation in 1933, the Toyota Motor Company created its first engine, the Type A, placed in the Model A1 passenger car and the G1 truck.

During WWII, Toyota was committed to making trucks for the army and only the premature ending of the conflict saved the company's factories in Aichi from a scheduled Allied bomb raid. After the war, Toyota resumed car making but found more success in building trucks and buses than with cars. Still, it didn't give up on cars for good and in 1947 it came up with the Model SA, also known as the Toyopet, a name which later was applied to other models as well.

A little more successful was the Model SF which also had a taxi version but the same 27 horsepower engine as its predecessor. A more powerful model, the RH, which had 48 HP came out shortly after. Production went up rather fast and by 1955, Toyota was turning out 8400 cars a year. That year, Toyota diversified their production, adding the Jeep-like Land Cruiser and the luxury sedan, the Crown.

With numbers growing and with several models under their belt, Toyota now had its eyes set on the international market. The first dealership outside Japan was in America in 1957 an the first plant in Brazil in 1959. An interesting strategy from Toyota ensured that all models were somehow unique to the region where they were produced (they were adapted to the respective market).

The big break for Toyota on the American market came with the 70s when rising gas prices forced local producers to make smaller cars. These were thought of as entry-level and as a consequence lacked in quality of finishings. In contrast, Toyota already had several fuel-efficient models that were also of better quality. The Corolla is the best example in this sense, soon becoming America's favorite compact car.

But as far as the luxury market went, Toyota still had trouble with selling the Crown and the Cressida. At the dawn of the 80s, the entire luxury market in America was entering a downwards slope, with all the other manufacturers finding it difficult to keep up sales, and that's when Toyota came up with Lexus, a new company that would make luxury cars.

By the beginning of the 90s, Toyota vehicles became synonymous with reliability and low-cost maintenance which made them very popular all over the world. A bid for winning over the younger audience was made with the launch of models like the MR2 and the Celica.

Presently, Toyota is at the forefront of the environmental battle, with its successful hybrid model, the Toyota Prius and now announcing a plug-in electric car that will be called Toyota Plug-in HV, which will run on standard electricity powered by a lithium-ion battery pack.

"Averaging 68.4 MPG over 19K miles"
My previous Prius was a 2015. I leased it. I liked it a lot and after lease was over, I was planning on buying it. I went to the dealership and they made me an offer I could not refuse. A 2018 Prius 4 that was a demo car that the dealer used for test drives. It had about 1K miles on it and was just like new for 6 thousand off the asking price. It was the last day of the year for their accounting and they wanted this car gone....and it was when I drove off the lot in it. The 2015 was averaging around 56 MPG which I was happy with. With the 2018, I am averaging 68.4 MPG over 19K miles. I am very happy with that! Gasoline costs are really nothing....trips to Florida from Northern Ohio cost about $ 30 in gasoline. What is nice about the Prius is you can park at a campground and leave the car on for heat or A/C overnight with a very low cost as the AC is electric and runs off the main battery pack. Heat is easy too...just like AC, it is a version of a heat pump....so overnight parking is not a problem...and plenty of room in the back to stretch out and sleep....saving on motel costs. The car is very comfortable. The 2018 is much quieter than the 2015. Handles much better also. On the highway, it often goes into electric mode and so the gasoline savings really add up....often times going 65 mph the car on downhill runs goes into the electric mode...you cannot even feel the difference except in your wallet.....saves tons on gasoline! The technology in the Prius is excellent. Auto high beam lights, LED lights everywhere. Adaptive cruise control...really love that! Power everything. Big infotainment screen. What, no Android interface? Windshield display..yes! Will anyone make a backup camera that is not effected by rain so you can use it when it rains? Sensors everywhere...lets you know when getting close to objects or cars or people or even chipmunks! Lane departure technology...it actually kind of steers your car back if it crosses the lines in the road. Will I get another one? Eventually. I drive my cars for a long time usually. This car seems to be very reliable and from what I hear is popular with the Taxi drivers in NYC....which says a lot. I often drive my cars to 300 to 700 thousand miles...till the wheels fall off. I figure the 2018 Prius can do that and probably more.

I have owned and still have a 2009 Kia amanti it is now 2024 I have 51000 miles on this car excellent handling in all weather except ice and deep snow very fast in traffic I think the handling is tight and responsive. My spouse has driven this on the interstate frequently and the first thing he did was get it up to 220 mph at this speed is floaty but under 80 mph just a pleasure to drive *****
