We sampled three versions of the 2019 Nissan Altima, starting with the sporty SR trim level, which has different suspension tuning, paddle shifters and 19-inch wheels, and uses the 248-horse VC-T (Variable Compression Turbo) engine. Power comes on quickly and with ease, and response from a stop is excellent, but the VC-T engine sounds a bit unrefined. The ride is tuned slightly firmer in the SR, and handling is quite good – but not as good as in the segment-best Mazda6. Next up: the Altima Platinum Edition One, the only Altima to come standard with the VC-T engine. While the standard suspension’s ride was comfortable on an extended drive, it’s firmer than in other midsize sedans. Also noteworthy are the Altima’s seats, now with added bolstering. They are comfortable and supportive, and there were no feelings of fatigue or achiness after several hours behind the wheel. These are arguably the best seats you can get in a midsize sedan. Third up on our drive was the Altima with the base 2.5-liter 4-cylinder, which we expect to be the volume seller. It’s much quieter than the previous standard engine. Compared to the turbocharged powerplant, you can feel it work harder on grades and when passing other cars on the freeway, but it's got ample power around town and at highway speed. Providing decent power (188 horsepower) and highway fuel economy as good as 39 mpg, this engine will satisfy most drivers.

2.0-LITER VC-T ENGINE Nissan’s new 4-cylinder engine offers V6-like power while improving fuel economy. The compression ratio changes as the situation calls for it, prioritizing power when you want it and fuel efficiency while you’re cruising. Nissan estimates the 2.0 VC-T's fuel-economy improvement over the previous V6 is three combined mpg, up from 26 to 29. SAFETY FEATURES The Altima’s roster of available safety features expands to include ProPILOT Assist (which centers the Altima in the lane while keeping it a safe, consistent distance from the car ahead), plus Safety Shield 360 with rear automatic braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and standard automatic emergency braking and forward-collision warning.

The 2019 Nissan Altima’s redesigned interior has more upscale color schemes and nicer materials than in past models. The new infotainment system includes a standard 8-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, Bluetooth, and handsfree text messaging. The features are easy to use: The screen, climate controls, and audio knobs are within easy reach. Also, USB and USB-C ports are available in both rows. The interior has plenty of room, but interestingly, the longer wheelbase and overall vehicle length that the new platform provides don’t translate into more passenger room. While front headroom is slightly better, rear headroom and front and rear legroom are down slightly.

The 2019 Altima is longer, lower and wider, and the new dimensions give the midsize sedan a hunkered-down stance. The new styling gives this Nissan chiseled lines and a smoother, sharper nose. The biggest styling difference: a new angular C-pillar design that’s reminiscent of the big-brother Maxima. The sporty SR gets LED headlights, a dark chrome grille, 19-inch wheels, black caps on the side mirrors, and body-color door handles.

The new Nissan Altima comes with an impressive array of standard equipment. In addition to a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and continuously variable transmission, there’s remote engine start, safety items including automatic emergency braking, a rear-door alert, rear-view monitor, and a driver alertness feature. In the comfort and convenience arenas, there’s an 8-way power driver’s seat, plus an 8-inch display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, Bluetooth connectivity, and four USB charge ports.

In addition to the available turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive, there are plenty of other upgrades and options for the Altima. Comfort and convenience add-ons include heated front seats and steering wheel, 2-way driver-side power lumbar support, driver-side memory settings, a 4-way power front-passenger seat, leather seating, dual-zone climate control, a 9-speaker Bose audio system, navigation, and a moonroof. Exterior upgrades, such as LED fog lights, heated outside mirrors with LED turn-signal indicators, and 19-inch wheels are options on higher trim levels. Safety systems include rear sonar parking sensors, an around-view monitor, ProPILOT Assist, and the Safety Shield 360 suite of advanced safety systems.

The 2019 Nissan Altima comes with a choice of 4-cylinder engines. The 2.5-liter engine, expected to be the volume seller, is the same size as the previous standard engine, but now uses direct injection, is quieter, and is more powerful, while also being more fuel efficient. It’s also the only engine available with the option of all-wheel drive. The second is the flagship engine, a 2.0-liter variable-compression turbo four that replaces the previous model’s V6. While the new engine has less horsepower than the V6 did, torque is higher (up 29 lb-ft to 280), and fuel economy improves as well. Both engines use a continuously variable automatic transmission.2.5-liter inline-4188 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm180 lb-ft of torque @ 3,600 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy (est.): 28/39 mpg (front-wheel drive), 26/36 mpg (AWD)2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4248 horsepower @ 5,600 rpm280 lb-ft of torque @ 1,600 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 25/34 mpg

The 2019 Nissan Altima starts at less than $ 25,000 for the S and tops out over $ 36,000 for the limited-run Platinum Edition One, with SR, SV, SL and Platinum trims priced within that range. Only the SR, Platinum and Edition One are available with the VC-T. It’s a $ 4,500 option with the SR, $ 3,000 with the Platinum, and standard with the Edition One. All Altimas that are powered with the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder are available with all-wheel drive, as a $ 1,350 option. The only option is the premium package. All prices include $ 895 destination charges. Pricing is competitive with the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Hyundai Sonata. Be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying for their new Nissan. As for the Altima's resale value, we expect it to be about average.

2019 Nissan Altima Future Generations

Nissan Altima Overview and History

The Nissan Altima 2018 is a six-generation, dedicated to the mid-size sedan segment, ready to compete with the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry with all-wheel drive available with some standard features and a new option for upgrading engines. The 2-door Nissan Altima Coupe, like the all-new 2013 4-door Altima Sedan, offers high quality and high value – while maintaining its added touch of aggressive coupe styling.
Known by many names, this major Asian conglomerate has been making cars since 1914. Today, Nissan is the third largest automaker in Japan. The Nissan Motor Company took over the Datsun company in 1933 and in 1934 it would take on the name we all know today.

The first Datsun passenger car came off the assembly line in 1935 and pretty soon Nissan started exporting to Australia. In 1937 the Datsun Type 15 becomes the first mass-produced vehicle in Japan, which also comes in mini-pickup and delivery van form.

Ever expanding the production, Nissan decides to expand into the United States. This move from 1958 was made due to the American influence Nissan had thanks to its designer, William R. Gorham. The models exported to the US were 1200 Sedans with a 48 hp engine, a compact pickup with 37 hp which later became a top seller during the 50s.

By the time the 60s rolled in Nissan had already made a name for itself on both sides of the Pacific. Now, the company moves into another part of the market, starting to sell sport cars. At first, it would be the SPL 210, a narrow, high roadster had a folding soft top and a 48hp engine, soon upgraded to a 85hp version.

Catering for the American market, Nissan introduces the Bluebird, with synchronized 3-speed transmission in 1962. In the off-road sector, the Patrol is debuted, with a generous amount of horsepower, that was marketed as being able “to climb trees”. In 1967 the 2000 Roadster is let loose upon the unsuspecting public and onto the racing world which it takes by storm.

The sporty line is continued in the 70s with the “Z” line, one still continued today. The 1970 240Z becomes the best selling sports car in the world by offering quality and comfort at an affordable price. Sales in America start taking off until eventually, in 1975, Datsun becomes the number 1 importer in the States.

Nissan starts expanding during the 80s in order to keep up with demand and opens up new factories. And just when everyone thought that Nissan couldn't get any bigger, along comes a whole new brand of Nissan, one aimed at a more luxurious segment of the market, Infiniti. In 1989, as the Infiniti project getting off the ground, parent company Nissan was celebrating its millionth car built in the US.

As new plants get built throughout the 90s, new models are added to the line up to corner the market. The Altima sedan and the Sentra become front-runners as the best sold models in the Nissan line-up. Next, in 1999, it was time for the European market, Nissan signs an agreement with French manufacturer Renault to use each other's expertise and strengths.

In 2002, the Z concept is resurrected with the 350Z, a sporty car that quickly wins over car enthusiasts but specialists as well. The ewly-formed SUV market will also be represented in the Nissan line-up with the Murano. Now, the boys over at Nissan seem to have a real hard point to make as they've released the GTR, a super-sporty car, the crowning jewel of Nissan motoring and engineering.

2019 Nissan Altima Consumer Reviews

flyablepursuable,
Great car!
I've seen 42 mpg. 5 star safety ratings. Love the zero gravity driver seat. Love the sleek style. I'm all about my bottom line. 3k or more cheaper than a comparable Accord or Camry. Nissan Altima rocks!

Don't Judge a Book by its Cover!
I certainly was fooled by the great design of my 2019 Altima. The red color certainly made the car very outstanding. With all its beauty came ugliness. I now own the car over 2 years and the CVT transmission still jerks back and forth while driving under 10 mph. My wife and I are so frustrated with this. It actually is causing neck problems with all the stuttering back and forth. For over 2 years each time I bring the car into Nissan for this issue,I am told it is a software problem. Still, till this date,no software updates. Don't get fooled by this car's looks,it is very deceiving. I would consider other 4 door sedans before considering a Nissan Altima!!!!
firefoxbarnaby,
Love it but….
I have a 2019 Nissan Altima SR I love my car I bought it 3 months ago I’m the second owner on it but the volume nob was broke when I bought it but I bought a extended warranty for the basic till 60k miles and when when it super hot out black isn’t the best and the touch screen get extremely hot and I’m afraid one day the heat will get it and since my car was a loaner car before the transmission acts up a bit not enough to fix it just a shutter or two and a little jerk but I love my car and since I bought it it’s gone up $5000 in value I bought it for $19,990 and it’s worth almost $25k now it’s super comfortable and rides so good with the sport suspension love the big 19’ rims make me feel fancy and the automatic braking has saved my life a lot but she will be mine till the it has 100,000+ miles on it I named her Nyla the nissan.

Worst Car I’ve Ever Owned
I own a 1999 Nissan Altima and it has been faithful to me all these years. Nothing big except routine oil changes and new batteries. So I figured a 2019 brand new Altima would be just as faithful. No. Back in the shop every 3 months with computer issues and transmission issues. Still under warranty but so inconvenient and warranty is almost up. I hate the way this car drives, like a golf cart. Such a huge turning radius and drives like a boat. I hate it.

Horrible car
Very uncomfortable, low rider for a tall person, uses a lot of gasoline! No trunk space, leg room, monitor info screen is awful. can't see it when really sunny. even when adjusted. I could go on and on
raddedollhouse,
Bad car
Too many problems already with this car. Transmission cvt sucks!!! Gas mileage is not accurate. Stereo system has glitches going on. I, do not recommend this vehicle to anyone. If you do have this car, your trade in value is pretty much gone. Bad resale value!!!!!

Awesome car to drive
I recently rented Th a Nissan Altima to go to Arizona the car performance was wonderful to start with its very comfortable to ride in and the safety options are amazing it went up those steep mountains without a problem even at high speeds 80+ I would love.to own at his car it outperforms the others in its class. Well done Nissan !!

Love my car!
Great looking car with comfort and style as well as runs well of course. Super gas mileage and is a pleasure to drive.

Love this 2019 Altima SV!
I have only had it a week and learning about all its features. It looks awesome, drives awesome and is a great value in my opinion. I feel safer driving this car and love all the safety features. The car handles great, has sufficient power for my needs and gets better gas mileage than my previous Toyota Corolla. The seats are very comfortable and I love the heated steering wheel and seats. So far this car exceeds my expectations. This is my first Nissan. I liked it way better than the Toyota or Honda’s I was considering.

Super Value and Quslity
I just bought this car and bought the 2020 SR model. Sticker was just shy of $29,000 and I bought it for a great deal at just north of $24,000. The ride quality is very hood, even with the sportier suspension and 19” wheels. It came with the sunroof and heated seats in a package and I love the 8” screen that has Apple Carplay that supports my iPhone so there is no need for Nav. I bought some leather seat covers for the front seats that arrive today and I also bought a carbon fiber lip spoiler to install next week. The color of the car is awesome, it’s a red/maroon metallic that looks great. The only thing I am not in love with is the seat material but the covers will take care of that. With the money I saved negotiating I bought the 7 year bumper to bumper warranty and the dealer backs the power train, through Nissan for unlimited miles and lifetime.
raspdairy,
Car is a blend of luxury and sport
I love the sport ride in turns and exceleration on the highway. It’s great on gas and has the power to pass and anything on the road. Lease price was very reasonable and insurance was lower therm my previous Ford. Would recommend to a friend
sunnycomma,
Cheap
Before this I had the 2015 Nissan Altima and I have to say that that was a much better car. Obviously the new tech on the 2019 model is good no doubt about it. But even though it's the same trim I got, the car audio sounds worse, the interior is cheaper. Overall I'm really not happy with this car.

Excellent Sedan for the Money
Purchased the Platinum Edition of the 2019 Altima about a month ago. So far love it. Love the safety features. camera, back and forward. Lane sensing etc. Very comfortable seats. Leather seats are very nice. First Trip over 100 miles on 2 lane highways through small towns, got 44 miles a gal so that is a real plus. Exterior is an excellent look with just the right amount of curves to it. Car appears very sporty looking at it. Info System is easy to use, Bose speakers are excellent. It is my 3rd Altima 2010 and 2015 and this is by far the nicest of them all. Each of the others were top trim levels as well.
pulsestreese,
Best Car Ever
3rd Altima we have owned. Loved them call but the 2109 SR is by far the best. we traded in a 2108 S model. All new look, sporty and comfortable. Drives awesome (When I get to drive it, my wife always wants to drive now). We couldn't be happier! People have stopped us at the grocery store and asked what kind of car it is and they can't believe that it's an Altima. Not much more to say. Fantastic car!
frarchedalfred,
This is my 5th altima and I've loved them all.
Always comfortable seating, never had any of my Altimas in for repairs other than routine maintenance, & excellent gas mileage. My new Platinum model has an average of 31 mpg, yet the engine is so peppy. Love all the safety devices, especially blind spot indicator. The on-board computer is amazing and now I think I could never live without it. The color is beautiful - scarlet ember and the styling is gorgeous. Love this car!!

Great Improvement of previous generations
New Altima is knock out in design. Modern and attractive exterior and interior. Appreciate the simple dash layout and controls on steering wheel. Yes there is a bit of plastic but doesn't look cheap and what do you expect at this price point. Pro-Pilot is amazing and don't see how anyone buys car with out this type of safety feature. Performance is good and one of the fastest 0-60 times of all the base engine cars (7.6). Ride is comfortable most of the time but suspension doesn't like pothole filled roads, but neither do I. Can wheel and deal on price better than you can on Honda Accord, Camry or Mazda 6. All which I drove and did not find any reason to buy over Altima.
barleyendowment,
Many shortcomings insight
This 2019 Altima 2.5 SL drives nicely and soft on 17 inch wheels. 2.5L engine has a sufficient power. CVT transmission works fine. Though, in my opinion, it substantially lacks driving dynamics and pleasure of the automatic transmission with gears. Steering is precise and on-center. Brakes work very well. Navigation system is simple, but intuitive and entry commands are easy. Bose audio system sounds OK for this vehicle segment, but nothing extraordinary. Trunk space is adequate. Rear seats are comfortable and visibility is good. Heated steering wheel is an incredible feature. Once you try it, you will never want to get the car without it. These are the good things about this vehicle and now are the shortcomings. Front passenger seat is awfully uncomfortable. The seat cushion does not go up nor down, nor does it recline. It feels like you are sitting flat on the floor. There is no lumbar support. Long drives are very uncomfortable and unpleasant. Please remember this is one of the top trims of this vehicle. There is no ventilation for front seats and rear seats are not heated. Interior is very dim at night time as there are no LED interior lights and regular bulbs with foggy lenses do not provide a good illumination. The buttons for the lights feel cheap and loose. Tail lights are not LED neither and their illumination is dim and out of date. Headlights are LEDs, but their range is short and visibility is marginal. Ford Fusion, Honda Accord and Mazda 6 offers all the above mentioned features for about the same price. The infotainment screen is not tilted towards the driver and it is hard to see sometimes with sun glare. Also it is destructive to reach to the screen every time you need to change anything as there is no separate controller knob like in Mazda. Climate control for some reason does not maintain the set temperature. The interior materials look and feel cheap, especially on the door panels. Front doors rattle when you close them and dashboard speaker covers are misaligned. The sunroof size is very small. In my opinion, there are many shortcomings and cost saving signs. They are very visible, not attractive nor they are comfortable.

Amazing Piece of Tech on Wheels
Nissan has nailed it and finally came up with a design that millenials and new comers alike would love! This vehicle is beautifully crafted and it very appealing on and off road. Fast, sleek, and sexy!
