Our 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 sedan exhibited a smooth ride and strong brakes. Unfortunately, the steering’s on-center feel is so poor we physically had to return the wheel to center or run the risk of continuing in whichever direction the Mirage was last pointed. On rough pavement, the Mirage’s suspension is quite bouncy and the car leans heavily even in moderate corners. Fuel economy is good so long as you’re not in a hurry to get where you’re going. Any sense of urgency, however, requires constant full-throttle maneuvers that quickly torpedo those rosy EPA numbers. The 1.2-liter 3-cylinder engine isn’t big on power; with a mere 78 ponies it requires a leisurely 12.5 seconds to achieve 60 mph. The engine is also quite loud at full throttle, a fact exacerbated by the CVT automatic transmission that keeps the tachometer near redline anytime the engine is asked for peak performance.

APPLE CARPLAY/ANDROID AUTO A pleasant surprise in any subcompact, the 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage offers both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. With these apps, the audio system connects to your smartphone allowing you to access texts, maps and music all via the 6.5-inch touch screen. WARRANTY Similar to what Hyundai and Kia offer, Mitsubishi’s 2018 Mirage and Mirage G4 subcompacts come with a 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty at no extra cost.

Improvements to the interior this year include a new touch-screen audio system, rearview camera and a relocated USB port. Sadly, soft-touch surfaces aren’t among the positive, and the Mirage offers no padded elbow rest, although it does gain a driver’s-side center armrest this year. The supportive seat padding and cloth suggest comfort, and the seat heaters are remarkably efficient, but the lousy seating position makes it hard to actually get comfortable. And there are cheap touches everywhere, like the Bluetooth microphone gracelessly tacked on top of the steering column.

While we wouldn't call the 2018 Mirage ugly, it doesn't benefit from the cutesy charm of some other jelly-bean-like subcompacts. The hatchback and sedan feature a large chrome grille with a handsomely detailed lower bumper. The trunk gives the little car a more mature persona, and while it offers decent cargo space, the rear seats don't fold down as they do in the hatch, although there is a pass-through for longer objects. The Mirage G4 is available in a few eye-catching colors, such as bright orange Infrared, or the purplish Wine Red of our test car.

The basic 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 comes with air conditioning, tilt (but not telescoping) steering wheel with controls for audio and Bluetooth, and power windows, doors and mirrors. Also standard is keyless entry with an alarm, a USB port, and a 4-speaker touch-screen audio system with rearview camera. It's a little sparse, but not surprising considering the low base price. Safety features include hill-start assist, seven standard airbags, including a driver's-side knee airbag, and stability control. That of course is on top of the 1.2-liter 3-cylinder engine, which in base models is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission.

Foremost among the options is the automatic transmission, which we recommend since the manual is hardly the best. Most options are available as standard equipment in the higher-level SE trim on sedans, or GT on the hatchback. They include push-button ignition and entry, and the upgraded audio system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Automatic climate control is also part of the upgraded models, but curiously a stand-alone navigation system isn't available; presumably Mitsubishi has decided whatever smartphone you're using will suffice. Also available on the SE/GT models is cruise control controlled through steering-wheel buttons.

The only engine available in the 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage and Mirage G4 is a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder with a modest 78 horsepower. The engine's primary duty is saving fuel, and it does this admirably, offering up to 42 mpg on the highway and 35 mpg in the city, numbers we normally associate with hybrids. The downside is that this isn't the most elegant powertrain. The engine vibrates noticeably at idle -- although it's better than it was before -- and at full throttle it sings a raspy, groaning song that will discourage exploring the reach of the gas pedal. Unfortunately, even if you just want to keep up with traffic leaving a stoplight, you'll need to floor it, which of course hurts fuel economy. 1.2-liter inline-3 78 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm 74 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 33/40 mpg (manual, sedan) 33/41 mpg (manual, hatchback), 35/42 mpg (automatic, sedan), 37/43 mpg (automatic, hatchback)

The lowest Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) on a 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage is on the ES hatchback, which starts at about $ 14,260 including the $ 865 destination charge. The automatic transmission adds $ 1,200 to that price. The G4 sedan starts at about $ 15,260 with a manual. A fully equipped Mirage G4 SE is automatic-only and starts at a little below $ 18,800. While those prices are low, they're also not much better than a variety of competitors, like the Nissan Versa or Honda Fit. No matter what you decide, be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area paid; it's a good chance it's well below sticker. As for resale, the Mirage is not expected to hold its value particularly well.

Mitsubishi Mirage Overview and History

The Mitsubishi Mirage is a sub-compact hatchback car, built in Thailand and exported to various markets across the globe.
Part of the Mitsubishi business conglomerate, Mitsubishi Motors has earned its place on the Japanese and international car market. The company's history starts sometime in 1917, when the first Mitsubishi model, a seven-seater sedan based on the Fiat Tipo 3, rolls off the assembly line. Not very successful, production was discontinued after just 22 models were built.

True production begins after the merger of Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and Mitsubishi Aircraft Co. in 1934. Concentrated on building aircraft, ships, and railroad cars, the company found time to make a prototype sedan in 1937 which it called the PX33. Sadly, it was mainly for military use as the war approached.

Only after the war did the company really got into car production with a small three-vehicle vehicle, the Mizushima and a scooter with a funny name, the Silver Pigeon. Then came the split of the former conglomerate, because the conquering Allies did not see with favorable eyes Japan's industrial development.

A decade later, things in Japan were looking up and personal transportation became an issue again as more and more families afforded cars. Enter the Mitsubishi 500, a sedan for the masses, and later the Minica small car and the Colt 1000 in 1963. With sales rising, the remnants of the Mitsubishi conglomerate were united once again in 1970.

The next step for the company was to ally itself with a foreign company, Chrysler in this case, which bought 15% of the Mitsubishi, which afforded the Japanese manufacturer the license to sell rebadged Galants as Dodge Colts in the States and as Chrysler Scorpions in Australia.

In this way, Mitsubishi was able to raise numbers in production and set up a series of dealerships around Europe. But if for Mitsubishi things were looking up, the same could not be said about its American partner which was forced to sell the Australian manufacturing division in 1980.

Two years later, Mitsubishi would enter the American market under its own name with the Tredia sedan, the Cordia and the Starion coupe. The car quota was established at 30,000 vehicles but the Japanese were keen to increase that number and they began a campaign of active advertising. By the end of the 80s, Mitsubishi had achieved 1,5 million units produced worldwide.

In order to bypass the strict import regulations and to ease the tensions between the two companies, Mitsubishi and Chrysler founded a new vehicle manufacturing company in Normal, Illinois under the name Diamond-Star Motors which started production in 1987. The models that came out of this plant include the Mitsubishi Eagle, the Eagle Talon and the Plymouth Laser.

In 1988 the company changed its status from being privately owned to public. Mitsubishi industries remained the largest stockholder with 25% of the company, while Chrysler upped its share to 20 %. Later, in 1992, it reduced the equity to just 3% and even sold its interest in Diamond-Star Motors, leaving Mitsubishi as the sole owner.

In 1995, Mitsubishi Motors changed its name to the current on from DSM as it was previously known on the American market. Also, it opened up a new North American Manufacturing Division in 2002.

In 2000, Mitsubishi sought a new partnership with the newly formed Daimler-Chrysler concern which cost the German-American group $ 1.9 billion, $ 200 million less than the original price once the defect cover-up scandal came out. It seems that Mitsubishi had systematically covered up defects in its production cars as far back as 1977, involving anything from failing brakes to faulty clutch systems. When the news was disclosed, the company was forced to recall 163,707 vehicles for free repairs.

That, coupled with a economic crisis in the Asian region caused Mitsubishi a loss in profit and even  the need to downsize in order to cope with falling demand. A new breed of cars, revitalized models and forward thinking was what brought Mitsubishi back on track. The Mitsubishi i, a small car perfect for the Asian market and the new Lancer and Outlander were enough to put the company back on the market. This lead to the first profitable quarter at Mitsubishi in four year to be declared in 2006.

2018 Mitsubishi Mirage Consumer Reviews

rematchplug,
Great Commuter! GREAT MPG!
I bought a 2018 Mirage ES in Oct of 2018 as a commuter car. Car gets phenomenal gas mileage and won’t break down. I’ve put 64,000 miles on it in 2.5 years and nothing has needed to be fix other than expected maintenance! It was a bit sluggish, however the engine is only a 3 cylinder, so I wasn’t expecting it to be quick. I added a performance chip to it, made it a little quicker from take off. Love the backup camera and touch screen radio with blue tooth. Interior pieces are cheap plastic and scratch/damage easily. So does the outside, so be gentle! I got the 5 speed manual, so I can’t give feedback on the CVT, however the 5 speed is by far the easier, smoothest shifting manual I’ve ever driven, and I’ve driven many! I will say it doesn’t FEEL like a new car driving it, not even when it was brand new. It’s not as refined as you would expect a 2018, but then again, it’s very inexpensive. I just turn up the radio and go! Best commuter I’ve ever had!
casuallythinning,
I only had it as a rental. I would never own it.
This car is a piece of junk. If you look under the hood, you can actually see the ground thanks to the tiny and severely underpowered engine. If you go over 60, the steering wheel vibrates. The transmission does not shift smoothly at all. I drove it up the Hollywood hills, I don't recommend doing that in a car like this. I wondered if it would make it to the top. It did but it was not a pleasant ride. Also, the frame is so cheaply made. I stood against it while pumping gas and it felt like an empty Coke can. I was worried I might have damaged it. Even a light wind makes it feel the car feel like it will tip over. There is also no center console. Everything is in an awkward spot. The radio button is super tiny. This car is basic transportation and nothing more.
endnotetokahee,
Absolutely no good
This car is junkyard dog. Pile of scrap metal.. this thing has transmission fluid leaking. Oil leaks from motor. Walk away fast!!!
hangoverneedles,
“Expert” reviews are WRONG
Drive one and make up your own mind. I drive the Interstate weekly. I put it into “sport mode” before the on ramp and I’m doing 75 mph before I run out of lane. I got a great price. Lots of incentives that change monthly. You will not have to pay MSRP unless you really want to.
luggmagnitude,
Great little car
I bought a 2018 ES CVT used from a dealership. Good price and warranty. This is my first small car..I usually drive mid-sized trucks. It has fantastic gas mileage. Mountain driving has not been a problem. Freeway driving good. Just waiting to see how it does in the snow. Over all I am very pleased with my little car. Glad I did not listen to the "experts" who did not like the car.
condenseused,
Cheaply made but reliable
Car is compact and was a very good price brand new. Nothing spectacular about this car other than it is reliable. Don't have a passenger visor mirror, no passenger arm rest, or a middle compartment between the driver and passenger seat. The noise from outside the car is pretty loud, I'm assuming because of how cheaply the car is made and lack of insulation. Doesn't hold it's value.
dryeastward,
Excellent
I wanted the least expensive, most economical, and easy to drive new vehicle. The Mirage is a hands down winner for me. 99.9 % of the time I am driving by myself so wasting gasoline on a bigger engine is not useful. Has plenty of power for me on the freeways. All the other same sized cars have bigger engines that just swallow more gasoline. For me it was an easy choice and one that i am very happy with.
snakejax,
Great value , 40 mpg and best roadside assistance
Car is a great value.
leaderscab,
Very efficient, reliable and fun to drive car
Ive owned pretty much every new small car over the years,( Aveo, cobalt, cruze, focus, fiesta, corolla, Versa, cavalier) and I can say the Mirage is the most efficient and nimble of the bunch. I know the other cars are in different classes but none were as efficient as the Mirage. The Cruze was great on gas with 38 mpg on the highway going with the wind. The Aveo was the cheapest right around 7900 new in 2011. But the New Mirage from Mitsu isby far the cheapest new car you can buy today. I bought two over the years, one is a 2015 Mirage DE with stick for 9499. The other is my new 2019 Mirage ES for 9988( MSRP 14800). The dealership made their goals and ran a sale on the new Mirages. With a long 10 year powertrain warranty and a reputation for being a dependable car I couldn't pass up the deal. Thank you Interstate Mitsubishi. I'm even hoping to get back a 500 e lead rebate from corporate to sweeten the deal even more. For a new car in 2019 that's really amazing. The resale on the Mirage cars take a hit due to all the negative reviews the pros give the car. First year depreciation will take a 14800 MSRP Mirage all the way down to 7000 on KBB trade in value. That's too huge of a hit so don't pay anywhere near the MSRP. If you're paying 11500 or less that's a fair deal on a great car. Or wait till they go crazy and drop the prices to 9988. My most resent new car was a VERSA sedan that I paid 10500 for new in 2018. I really liked the room but the driving dynamics weren't great. The clutch and shifter always fought me so I sold the car for 10000 used to a great family. So I didn't lose much. The Mirage is MUCH better in the way of driving Dynamics than the VERSA. The clutch is super light and the car zips around town with ease. The rear seat is roomy as well. Gas mileage on the highway is 45 mpg and city 40. The interior is also nicer than the VERSA. The new stereos with back up cameras are cool and the car has power everything. The biggest difference between the '15 Mirage and the '19 Mirage is the front end styling improvements, the Stereos, 9% more HP, and a firmer more taught ride. I have a small driveway so switching to a small car has made it a lot easier to maneuver n my driveway. Both of my Mirages are stick shifts and are actually fun to drive anywhere. I even had 5 people in the '15 on a trip to Ohio from Western New York. We averaged 43 MPG on the highway and I heard no complaints from anyone about the car. I hope Mitsubishi keeps building and Improving their Mirage. I will be a buyer for many years to come. I'm even looking at a new Mitsu SUV for my Wife. Mitsubishi Mirage= MAX Value, MAX MPG, MAX Life.
thankchase,
Excellent value!!!
I purchased a brand new 2017 Mirage ES (manual) with added armrest & bluetooth for 9299. If I had been a previous Mitsubishi owner or veteran, I would have gotten this car for even less. Plus, I received a free complimentary delivery of this car to my driveway from a dealership that was over 200 miles away. I did test drive a 2018 model closer to home prior to my purchase in October. Some people compare these cars the Metro & Festiva vehicles of 1990s. In all honesty, I dont feel that is bad. I drove a 1990 Ford Festiva for 14 years, & it was a great car. It handled well, was comfortable to drive, was unstoppable in snow, & got great gas mileage. By comparison, a 1990 Ford Festiva was 1.3L, 64 hp, 5 speed manual, 2-door hatchback, no A/C, no power steering, no power windows/locks, 12 inch wheels, door panels with painted metal & a little padded vinyl. The Mirage has more hp, is a 4-door hatchback, has A/C, power windows/locks/steering, 14 or 15 inch wheels, & much nicer finish inside. The 1990s small cars werent bad cars, but the new Mirage is really much nicer! If you are in the market for an affordable small car, this is a great value! The 5 speed manual shifts very smoothly. The car handles great on the road. Its a nice small car. My hope is that the reliability of this car matches its great warranty. It may not be the car for everyone, but I am very happy with my purchase!

2019 Mitsubishi Mirage
"It will get you back and forth"
The transmission is obviously terrible. It holds a low, low gear all the time and the engine violently revs up. The steering is numb as others have stated. Why such an honest review? Because the car is mechanically sound. Its our 2nd mirage now, traded the 2015 DE model for loaded 2019 GT. It has better options and still gets 44 MPG.

"2015 Mitsubishi great little car"
Small minimal great value. Great work car that provides excellent fuel economy. Quality better then expected. Some people still want little fuel efficient cars. Thank you Mitsubishi.
