The new Q5 strikes a lovely balance between an X3 and GLC, with a personality we'd summarize with the word "confident." When we pushed the new Q5 hard on mountain roads, its manners felt more sports sedan than crossover SUV. In both around-town driving and highway stretches, the Q5 is quiet and comfortable. And though most owners aren't likely to get their Q5 very dirty, it's surprisingly competent on dirt trails. The Q5's 252-horsepower 4-cylinder engine and 7-speed transmission make a good pairing. With a 0-60-mph time of 5.9 seconds, the new Q5 is faster than the prior version with the optional V6. The SQ5 takes all of that and amplifies it with about 100 more horsepower, sharper handling, better brakes, and even better steering. Yet the SQ5 gives up almost nothing when it comes to ride comfort or daily practicality.
AUDI PRE SENSE SAFETY SYSTEMS The 2018 Q5 and SQ5 come standard with both "basic" and "city" versions of this system. The first prepares the vehicle for an impact by closing windows and pre-tensioning safety belts. The second can detect other cars and pedestrians, and apply the brakes at up to 52 mph to mitigate or lessen an impact. PREMIUM SOUND SYSTEM We're suckers for a sweet audio system, and the latest Q5 and SQ5 SUVs offers an ear-popping one with its optional Bang & Olufsen setup. With 16 speakers pumping out 755 watts from a variety of sources -- including "old-school" compact discs -- it's bound to enhance any drive.
As with other Audis, the new Q5 and SQ5 offer up a 2-row/5-passenger interior at the intersection of contemporary design, cutting-edge technology and premium amenities. It's sleek yet handsome, and thankfully not overwhelmed with buttons. One of the highlights is the optional Virtual Cockpit, which turns the instrument cluster into a customizable 12.3-inch digital display that can show everything from the expected -- speed and mpg -- to the gee-whiz, such as realistic Google Maps. At 37.8 inches, rear legroom is good, as is cargo volume of over 60 cubic feet with the 40/20/40-split seats folded. The front seats are supportive, a benefit for longer commutes.
This latest Q5's squat and dignified exterior has changed just enough to keep it interesting while still remaining familiar. Up front is that gaping grille, surrounded by a new fascia, standard xenon headlights and LED running lights. Around back are a pair of elongated tailpipe housings and the all-important power tailgate. Standard roof rails help remind that this is an SUV. The Q5 rolls on 18-inch wheels as standard, with 19- and 20-inch variants optional. While other crossover SUVs have traded ground clearance for a more sedan-like ride, the 2018 Q5's stance has actually increased slightly, from 7.9 inches to 8.2 inches. The SQ5 adds to the look with a unique grille treatment, roof spoiler, and distinctive headlights.
The 2nd-gen Audi Q5 is available in three trims: Premium, Premium Plus and Prestige. The base Premium model is nicely equipped, even for a luxury-crossover SUV, with standard features like leather interior, tri-zone climate control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility, power-operated front seats, HomeLink garage-door opener and power tailgate. As mentioned in Favorite Things, the Q5 also includes impressive safety systems. The standard 10-speaker/180-watt audio system has an AM/FM and HD Radio, CD player and USB and SD card inputs, along with Bluetooth connectivity. A 7-inch center infotainment display and rearview camera are also included.
If you can swing it, we recommend the mid-trim Q5 Premium Plus with blind-spot monitoring, hands-free tailgate, heated front seats with driver's seat memory, full LED lights and panoramic sunroof. This trim opens the door to further options. The top-line Q5 Prestige adds the Virtual Cockpit, navigation system, Bang & Olufsen premium audio system, top-view camera system with parking sensors, head-up display, 8.3-inch center screen, and 20-inch wheels. The Q5 can be upgraded with heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, adaptive damping suspension and a driver-assistance package that bundles adaptive cruise control, active lane-keeping assist, traffic-sign recognition, and automatic high-beam control.
The 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine in the Q5 comes standard with a 7-speed dual-clutch S tronic transmission. That transmission routes power to all four wheels through quattro all-wheel drive, standard equipment on all Q5 models. The sophisticated system enhances fuel efficiency by powering the front wheels when possible, and instantly shift up to 100 percent of the power to the rear wheels as needed, so lightning-fast that you'll likely never notice it working. The SQ5 packs 102 more horsepower from its turbocharged 354-horsepower V6 engine, which comes connected to a Tiptronic 8-speed automatic transmission.2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 252 horsepower @ 5,000-6,000 rpm 273 lb-ft of torque @ 1,600-4,500 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 23/27 mpg 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 354 horsepower @ 5,400-6,400 rpm 369 lb-ft of torque @ 1,370-4,500 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 19/24 mpg
The 2018 Audi Q5 has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting at $ 42,475 including the $ 975 destination charge. The Premium Plus model begins at $ 46,475, while the top-line Prestige edition starts at $ 51,775. Fully loaded, a 2018 Q5 luxury-crossover SUV can kiss the $ 57,000 mark. The higher-performance SQ5 starts at about $ 55,300, and prices can climb up to the $ 70,000 once you start loading it with options. The Q5 and SQ5 start slightly higher than the equivalent BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC models, but the gap narrows once you select all-wheel drive on those models. The starting price of the new AWD Jaguar F-Pace nearly mirrors that of the Q5, while the Acura RDX, Infiniti QX50, Cadillac XT5, and Lincoln MKC and MKX start lower. Before buying, check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying. If the past is any indicator, the Q5's resale value will remain strong.

At the Beijing Motor Show 2018, Audi launches the first SUV in a long version.
A new Audi Q5 was introduced in 2016, bringing more masculine shapes, better technology and increased performance.
Shower gels and generally beauty-product brands have a way of appealing to customers by thrusting desire through sensorial-related names and presentation of their offers. Olfactory sense-stroking balms and soothing cashmere-touch night cream-approaches are basically the most commonly used methods of conveying beauty and easy customer-access to deeply-rooted sensorial pampering, unless beauty is forged out of steel and thousands of accurately engineered parts.
Automobiles undoubtedly fall into the latter category, and what better way of striking at least one of the remaining three senses if not building an image of a mighty engine roar or purr of a loyal cylinder sextet cradled under the bonnet of an Audi car? Audi translates as 'listen' from latin and besides expressing an unanimously accepted passion of the motorist, that of listening to the engine as if it were a never before heard dissertation on mechanics blended with boisterous 'deux ex machina' comments and demonstrations, it also marks the birth of Audi following Horch's demise, the previous name of the company that can be traced back to 1899.
Its founder, August Horch was forced out of his own company in 1909 due to trademark infringements, 8 years after the first automobile had rolled out the gates of the plant in Zwickau, Germany. After having been dispensed of, Horch started his own company under the same name which led to a fair share of trouble that came to an end as soon as Horch called for a meeting at the apartment of Franz Fikentscher to discuss the matter and come up with a new name for the company. Franz's son who was studying latin at the time was the true deliverer of the name that would later became synonymous with luxury and quality. As 'Horch' means listen in Old German, the boy simply made a switched the name with its latin corespondent, 'audi', sparking enthusiasm into the 'audience' that quickly adopted the name.
Audi's start o the German market was high lighted by the appearance of 2.6 liter engine powered vehicles followed by a series of more powerful ones, such as 4.7 L and the gas-gulping 5.7 L. Having gotten to see his company grow wings, Horch left in in 1920, four years before Audi's first 6 cylinder model was built. In 19128, Audi was acquired By Jorgen Rasmussen, owner of rival company DKW.
A few years later, a merger between Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer occurred and thus, the Auto Union was formed in 1932. Those times called for a new badge and the four interlocked rings were born as a sign of unity and identity of the newly formed auto-conglomerate. Technological improvement became a top priority that first took shape during the Second World War when an armored car was produced for the German Army.
However, all the progress would soon be severely slowed down and even halted at times due to heavy bombings. Moreover, as as soon as the conflict had come to an end, Zwickau had been caught in the soviet occupation zone that would become The German Democratic Republic in 1949. Not only that the company's activity was in jeopardy but the Auto Union had also broken up and the Union had to be restarted n new grounds, in Ingolstadt, Bavaria.
Though sluggish at first, the newly Ingolstadt based factory would attract many of the former workers and the construction of two-stroke engines would be resumed in a way similar to that of Zwickau. By 1958, Daimler-Benz had already acquired a whopping 87% of the Auto Union but its investment quickly became property of Volkswagen, the company having bought the factory and and the brands in 1964.
Soon after the change of ownership, two-stroke engines would be eliminated in favor of the more popular and more customer appealing four-stroke ones. DKW, the leading brand of the Union at the time failed as a brand despite of the changes it had made and Volkswagen decided to resurrect Audi. The former DKW built model was rebranded as an Audi one and was the springboard for the make of later models such as the 60, 75 and 80.
After a second merger with the Stuttgart based car-producer NSU by 1970, Audi established itself as a reliable growing brand that would later break the German boundaries and expand to new markets, including the North American one where it encountered difficulties following the release of a biased report that portrayed the car as suffering form 'unintended acceleration'. This was caused by the close placement of the brake and acceleration pedals, right next to each other. Shortly after the report was released , an abrupt decline in sales was registered that was countered only years later with the 1996 release of the A4 model.
Joining a row of successful car-producers, Audi has also garnered acclaim on the racing track with several World Record holdings, including one for Top Speed Endurance. Audi is currently enjoying a privileged position and large market share and is predicted to reach the production threshold of 1 million units by the end of this year.

"Horrible Active Lane Assist"
Using the Active Lane Assist (Prestige trim level), I am getting frequent false alerts to put my hands on the steering wheel. Audi senses this by measuring that the steering wheel didn't move for 15 seconds. On straight highways, I get a loud ding about every 5 minutes. Audi says that is how the car is designed for safety reasons. I hate this car and would say to anyone, don't buy this trim level.
My other minor complaint is the center console. You cannot get to the storage compartment without removing any cups from the cup holder. And the compartment is too small. There is a slot for a phone, but mine is too big to fit into it. Overall poor design.

"Most comfortable flamethrower ever"
Q5 Prestige with Warm Weather package (Sport Seat both front seats identical with cool ventilation). Riding on air. There is no other way to put it. The sport seats difference other than cooling is “wings” that hold your butt and back in place, a 24 position electric adjustment on BOTH identical front seats with thigh support extenders, excellent for a couple with very bad backs. Power: watch out for fishtailing as you can feel G forces when accelerating, if you want. When researching a replacement for our sloppy 2017 Pilot I noticed most owners of other new vehicles in the south were complaining about AC unable to keep up with the Florida, Texas and desert heats. No problem here, the Q5 has more cool air than needed here at 5200’ in the sunny July southwest desert. Instrumentation is terrific with heads up display, maps and routing directly in front of the driver. (What is more ridiculous than the cars that put the map in the center stack and aim it straight to the rear of the car? Who is sitting on the shift to look forward at the map?) Moving on, the interior materials scream quality. Plenty of rear legroom for a knee replacement patient and headroom not a problem anywhere. Rear seats recline a couple inches. Owners manual very well written with detail. You can spend an evening laughing hysterically at the index though. Looking to program the garage door opener? Look in a subcategory under “O”, “Open and Close”! It goes on, and kept us looking up things just to laugh at where they are. Summarizing: most comfortable luxurious road rocket I’ve ever owned.Read less
