If you're looking for a family-friendly SUV, the 2017 Volvo XC60 is a great place to start. The interior is as accommodating for adults as it is children, and all passengers benefit from the assurance that comes with top crash test scores and Volvo's obsession with safety innovations.

The XC60 further differentiates itself from other SUVs with its uniquely Scandinavian design and efficient yet potent four-cylinder engines. There's even a sporty R-Design model for drivers that want a more engaging experience.

Then again, there is no shortage of SUVs lining up to challenge the Volvo, and with many introduced or redesigned in recent years, some rivals have an technological and aesthetic edge. The long list of top competitors include the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Lexus NX 200t, Buick Envision, and Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class. Even in the face of such strong rivals, the 2017 Volvo XC60 is worth considering as it remains a great all-around performer.

Standard safety features for all Volvo XC60 models include antilock brakes, traction and stability control, whiplash protection for the front seats, front seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and Volvo On Call emergency telematics. Also standard is Volvo's City Safety system, which is a low-speed frontal collision warning and mitigation system with automatic braking.

A pair of integrated dual-stage child booster seats are optional and pop up from the rear outboard seats to accommodate children with a height/weight range from 37 inches and 33 pounds to 55 inches and 80 pounds. Other standard and/or available features include a blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, an upgraded frontal collision warning system with fully automatic braking and pedestrian and cyclist detection, a driver-inattention warning system and lane departure warning.

In brake testing, an XC60 T6 with 20-inch wheels and summer tires came to a stop from 60 mph in 118 feet, a respectable distance for this class of vehicle. Surprisingly, all-season tires extended that distance by only a foot.

In government crash tests, the XC60 was awarded five out of five stars for overall, frontal and side crash protection, as well as four stars for rollover protection. Likewise, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the XC60 its highest score of Good for small- and moderate-overlap front crash protection, along with side protection, roof strength, and head restraints and seats. It also received a rating of Superior for its front-crash prevention technology.

Notably, we picked the Volvo XC60 as one of ' Best Used SUVs and Best Used Luxury SUVs for 2017.

The 2017 Volvo XC60 is a five-passenger compact SUV that is offered in three main trim levels (Dynamic, Inscription and R-Design) that are further differentiated by two engine choices (T5 and T6).

Standard features for the T5 Dynamic trim include 18-inch wheels, LED running lights, heated mirrors, roof rails, dual panoramic sunroofs, automatic wipers, remote ignition, cruise control, low-speed frontal collision warning and mitigation, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, a rearview camera and rear parking sensors.

Interior features include dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather upholstery, eight-way power adjustable front sport seats with driver memory functions, 40/20/40-split folding rear seats, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, aluminum interior trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, Bluetooth phone and streaming audio, a 7-inch infotainment display, Volvo's Sensus Connect system with navigation and mobile apps, an eight-speaker stereo with USB/auxiliary audio input, HD and satellite radio.

The T6 Dynamic trim adds 19-inch wheels,a power liftgate, keyless entry/ignition and digital gauges. The Inscription trim includes all of the T5 Dynamic features along with 20-inch wheels, power-folding and auto-dimming exterior mirrors, front comfort seats, interior ambient lighting and wood interior trim. Most of these features are available on the T5 Dynamic as part of the Preferred Option package that also adds front parking sensors, a universal garage door opener, power-folding rear headrests and a 12-volt power outlet in the cargo area.

R-Design models are similarly outfitted as the T6 Inscription and add unique exterior and interior styling treatments, adaptive xenon headlights, a sport-tuned suspension, power-folding mirrors, automatic high beams, headlight washers, steering-wheel shift paddles, sport pedals, adaptive cruise control, frontal collision warnings with full auto braking and pedestrian detection, a lane departure warning system, a universal garage door opener, power-folding rear headrests and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system. Rear parking sensors are not available, though.

Most of the premium features are available as options on supporting trims. Bundled options include the Climate package (heated front and rear seats, heated windshield and washers, and a heated steering wheel) and the Advanced package (the R-Design's advanced safety systems, a drowsy driver alert system, a road sign reader and the premium audio). Standalone options include the heated front seats, adaptive xenon headlights, 20-inch wheels and dual two-stage integrated child booster seats.

The 2017 Volvo XC60 T5 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 240 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque (with a momentary overboost to 280 lb-ft). An eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to the front wheels, and all-wheel drive is available at additional cost. Properly equipped, the T5 can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

The T6 and R-Design models receive a supercharger on top of the turbocharger for a power increase to 302 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive is standard, and towing capacity maxes out at 4,400 pounds.

The EPA estimates fuel economy at 26 mpg combined (23 city/30 highway) for the front-wheel-drive T5. Opting for all-wheel drive drops that figure to 23 mpg combined. The T6 is rated at 22 mpg combined (20 city/27 highway).

In testing, an XC60 T6 and R-Design accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 6.4 and 6.2 seconds, respectively. Volvo estimates the T5 will reach 60 mph in 6.8 seconds.

Despite what you might think about an SUV powered by a small four-cylinder engine, the XC60 T5 should be more than adequate for most drivers. If you're regularly loading it to capacity with people and cargo, we recommend the more powerful T6. Fuel economy suffers slightly, but probably not enough to be a deal-breaker. Regardless of engine choice, the eight-speed transmission delivers smooth shifts and the available all-wheel drive makes it a capable handler in cold weather climates.

Around town, the XC60 easily soaks up road imperfections and provides a comfortable ride quality. Think twice about the available 20-inch wheels, though, as you could find the resulting ride to be a touch too firm. As for handling, the XC60 is competent, but it's not the segment's sportiest entry. Largely because newer and sportier models have come along in recent years, the XC60 can seem out of its element on tight, twisting roads, and its steering is overly light.

Volvo's reputation for tastefully simple interiors is on full display in the 2017 XC60. The inviting cabin features a distinctive "waterfall" center stack that gracefully joins the dash and center console. Operating the climate control is intuitive, but other systems might take some getting used to. In particular, the infotainment system is controlled via a multifunction knob on the center stack rather than a traditional touchscreen or dial mount where your hand naturally rests. Menus for navigation and music browsing can also be confusing.

Seat comfort, on the other hand, is excellent. Front seats are well shaped and appropriately cushioned for long road trips, and the range of adjustments ensure a comfortable position for a variety of body types. Rear seats are similarly accommodating, delivering adult-sized head- and legroom. Volvo is still one of the only manufacturers to offer integrated child booster seats that fold out of the rear bench.

The quality of the interior materials is decent for the class, though some newer SUVs have surpassed the XC60 in terms of overall look and feel. The XC60's age also shows in the overabundance of buttons on the center stack and small infotainment screen. Cargo space is better than average, though, providing 30.8 cubic feet behind the rear seats and up to 67 cubic feet with those seats folded.

Volvo’s XC60 has always felt quick, and that attribute remains even though it exclusively uses 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engines for 2017. These aren't ordinary 4-bangers: The one in T5 models is turbocharged to make a more than adequate 240 horsepower, while the other in T6 variants is both supercharged and turbocharged to pump out 302 horsepower. That latter makes the XC60 downright fast. The XC60 remains on the firmer end of the spectrum, risking some harshness on rougher roads. Steering feel is good but a touch slow to react. The XC60 doesn't offer the advanced, semi-autonomous driving features of competitors like the Mercedes GLC or even its all-new big brother the XC90, but it does offer adaptive cruise control and comes standard with Volvo's City Safety collision-avoidance system that can automatically apply the brakes. Engine restarts from the automatic start/stop system can feel abrupt, but the system can be deactivated.

DRIVE-E TECHNOLOGY Yes, the name sounds odd, and it has nothing to do with electric propulsion, but Volvo's new engines are energetic and efficient. Through the use of turbocharging or -- in the case of the XC60 T6 -- turbocharging and supercharging, these engines wring out lots of power despite their small size. ACTIVE SAFETY FEATURES City Safety is Volvo’s system that can automatically apply the brakes at speeds up to 31 mph if it senses a forward collision and the driver fails to brake. Optional is another system that can detect pedestrians and bicyclists and will brake the vehicle at even higher speeds to avoid an accident.

The Volvo XC60's 2-row, 5-passenger interior benefits from Swedish elegance. The dash includes an available TFT adaptable digital instrument cluster, allowing the driver to select different settings and colors, while all models feature a 7-inch screen that relays navigation and information from Volvo's Sensus system. The sportier-minded Dynamic editions have bits of aluminum sprinkled in the cabin, while the more traditional Inscription models have wood decor. Both use genuine leather upholstery. A trait we've long appreciated in Volvos is the comfortable and supportive driver's seat, and the XC60 is no different. Dynamic models have sport front seats, while the Inscription’s are geared more for comfort.

Volvo design has been sleek and stylish so long that we've nearly forgotten those old boxy shapes. The 2017 Volvo XC60 embodies that aesthetic, featuring a graceful profile and proportions. It all hides a functional vehicle, with low roof rails to reduce wind noise, and an optional crossbar system to carry bikes, kayaks, skis and more. Dynamic trims have black accents and darkened wheels. Top-line T6 R-Design models eschew off-road ability for on-pavement performance, with stylish 20-inch wheels and a sport-tuned suspension. Stick with non-R-Design models if you regularly churn through snow or mud. All models feature a panoramic roof.

With Volvo's shuffling of the 2017 XC60 lineup, this premium-compact SUV is even better equipped out the gate. Whether you opt for a base XC60 T5 in Dynamic or Inscription form, it will come with leather seating, panoramic moonroof, power-adjustable front seats, 40/20/40-folding rear seats, and an infotainment system that bundles navigation system, HD Radio, CD player and Bluetooth phone connectivity. The Volvo XC60's many standard safety features include blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, rearview camera, rear parking sensors, and the City Safety low-speed collision-avoidance system.

In addition to the stronger engine, T6 models feature all-wheel drive (AWD) as standard (it's optional on T5 models), larger wheels and power tailgate (also optional on T5 models). Along with its sport-tuned chassis, the top-line XC60 R-Design variant has many of the other options available on lower models, including adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, xenon headlights and harman/kardon audio system. Other goodies for 2017 include heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, integrated rear booster seats, rear-seat DVD entertainment system with two screens, power-folding rear headrests and power-retractable side mirrors.

Where in the past the Volvo XC60 has offered 4-, 5- and 6-cylinder engines, the latest version has a choice of just two 2.0-liter 4-cylinder powerplants. T5 models use a turbocharged version, while T6 and R-Design models have an engine that is both turbocharged and supercharged. Both are connected to an 8-speed automatic transmission. T5 models are front-wheel drive (FWD) as standard or can be optioned with all-wheel drive (AWD), while all versions of the T6 are now AWD, which mitigates the torque-steer issues we noted in past models that were front-drive. The Volvo XC60 is rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds in T5 form and up to 4,400 pounds for T6 models with the more powerful engine. 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 (XC60 T5) 240 horsepower @ 5,600 rpm 258 lb-ft of torque @ 1,500-4,800 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 23/30 mpg (FWD), 20/29 mpg (AWD) 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged inline-4 (XC60 T6 & R-Design) 302 horsepower @ 5,700 rpm 295 lb-ft of torque @ 2,100-4,500 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 20/27 mpgNote: Due to changes in EPA testing to more effectively reflect real-world conditions, some 2017 models show slightly lower fuel-economy scores than their 2016 versions.

The 2017 Volvo XC60 has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) just under $ 42,000 for a base T5 Dynamic or Inscription model. That is a few thousand more than last year, but this newer version has more features. The more powerful T6 model starts over $ 47,000, while the top-line XC60 R-Design begins just under $ 52,000. Option packages can tack on thousands more. At these prices, the XC60 now nearly mirrors rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Lexus RX. The Acura RDX and Infiniti QX50 continue to tempt with prices starting in the mid-$ 30K range, as does the new Buick Envision. Before buying, check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying for their new Volvo SUV. The XC60's resale value is expected to hold up fairly well, but still trail leaders like the Lexus RX and Audi Q5.

2017 Volvo XC60 Previous Generations

2017 Volvo XC60 Future Generations

Volvo XC60 Overview and History

After around 1 million units sold in Europe in nine years, the Volvo XC60 got a new model in 2017. The 2014 XC60 from Volvo is a significant update for the Swedish company's SUV.
AB Volvo is a world-leading Swedish manufacturer of commercial vehicles, trucks, buses and construction equipment, drive systems for marine and industrial applications, aerospace components and financial services. But it did start out as a car manufacturer, founded by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larsson. The main purpose of the company was to produce the safest cars possible, following the death of Assar's wife in a car crash. The automaker was founded April 14, 1927 in the city of Gothenburg, as a spin-off from roller ball bearing maker SKF (Svenska Kullagerfabriken AB).

The name Volvo was originally registered in May 1915 as a separate company within SKF AB and as a registered trademark with the intention to be used for a special series of ball bearing, but this idea was only used for a short period of time and SKF decided to use "SKF" as the trademark for all its bearing products. Volvo AB began to function on the 10th of August 1926 when the SKF Sales Manager Assar Gabrielsson and Engineer Gustav Larson, started production of 10 prototypes and set up the car-manufacturing business Volvo AB within SKF group. Volvo AB was introduced at the Stockholm stock exchange in 1935 and SKF then decided to sell its shares in the company.

The first series produced Volvo automobile, called 'ÖV4' left the factory on 14 April 1927. Just 996 cars were produced between 1927-1929. 'ÖV4' was replaced by model PV651 in April 1929. Its success on the market helped Volvo buy out their engine manufacturer and thus become a serious car producer. By 1931, it was already returning its first dividend to shareholders.

After it reached a production milestone of 10,000 cars in May 1932, Volvo then targeted a new demographic segment, aiming to make their cars cheaper, a car “for the people”. This was going to be the PV 51 which came out in 1936 which was a smaller version of the PV36.

The PV444 was one of the most significant cars of the war era, the first true small car, a mixture of American flair and European size, it would become a resonant success and the best sold model throughout the 60s. The P1800 was Volvo's first sports car, made in the early 60s and it was so popular that it was featured in the hit TV series “The Saint” starring Roger Moore.

Safety and quality were still paramount for Volvo and that's why the 240 series which replaced the 140 had even more safety innovations in that department, like crumple zones, rear facing child seats and collapsible steering columns. Together with the smaller 340 models, they would make for most of the sales during the 70s and 80s for Volvo.

The 90s brought with them a totally new model, the 850, a front-wheel drive, executive car which won numerous awards for handling and safety features. By now, productions costs were mounting up and Volvo was one of the few independent producers out there, after a proposed deal with Renault fell through in 1993. This forced the company to seek new marketing strategies and that's how the sleeker S40 and V40 models were introduced in the factory's production line.

The new models brought a breath of fresh air, just like the C70 coupe and convertible, which are responsible for revitalizing the Volvo image while keeping in tune with the old tradition of safety and quality.

The buyout of Volvo Cars was announced on January 28, 1998. Until then, Volvo Cars was owned by AB Volvo (the commercial vehicles group). In the following year acquisition for Volvo Cars by American car maker Ford Motor Co. was completed at a price of $ 6.45 billion USD. Volvo used the funds from the sale of the automobile division to finance the purchase of Scania, another leading Swedish truck manufacturer, but the deal was stopped for competition reasons by the European Union. Instead Volvo acquired the commercial vehicles division of French Renault and the American truck manufacturer Mack Trucks (which was owned by Renault at the time). As part of the arangement to buy Renault Trucks, the former parent company, Renault, bought in turn 20 percent in shares in AB Volvo. Among the reasons why Volvo took the initiative to sell the automobile manufacturing was the increasing development costs for new car models, coupled with the fact that it was a relatively small producer. The strategy was instead to grow as a truck manufacturer where it had a stronger market position.

Volvo Automotive's motto is "Volvo for life" attributed to the reliability and safety of their cars. Volvo means "I roll" in Latin. Combined with their company symbol, (commonly mistaken for the male symbol) which actually stands for iron ore and according to the company, represents "Rolling Strength".

2017 Volvo XC60 Consumer Reviews

T5 Inscription 4dr SUV (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
stylish
I've own my 2017 xc60 about 3months, I really enjoy the safety and comfort. The ride is firm but not obtrusive, I enjoy the bluetooth for my music. i'm still getting use to the size of the vehicle as I came out of a Volvo s40. a long road trip is in the future. I just finished a 1000, mile trip gas mileage avg 24mpg and it runs on regular a plus. I love the great visibility and road handling. I now would recommend a Volvo XC60 to anyone looking for a great Suv this truck swallowed up all my luggage and great plus three additional adults in comfort.

T5 Dynamic 4dr SUV (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
I had such high hopes....
1500 miles driven so far...encountered three issues (all were "reset" by turning the car on and off again.) First, the power lock on the driver side door decided not to function one day, but hasn't repeated yet. During a heavy rain, the auto folding mirrors would not fold back out after turning the car on and off several times. It later reset after being parked for an hour and I was told by the dealer to push the left and right mirror command buttons at the same time which should cause the mirrors to fold out if they are stuck. Best of all, I believe the parking break malfunctioned, triggering the check engine light to come on and the car to be undriveable. After I safely rolled into a parking lot and turned the care off and on it appears to be fixed for the time being. I'll be making my first trip to the service department before I make my second car payment! There are some good things: Acceleration is great for a 4 cylinder and size of the car; Tons of cargo space + panoramic sun roof made for some luxury car camping; Very comfortable (and great gas mileage at about 30 mpg) on a 8 hour road trip; Bluetooth integration is fairly seamless (wishing the car had apple play) and the navigation system has a very nice feature where the next turn displays in the instrument panel so you don't have to keep looking back at the screen. There are many things I really love about this car, but the reliability issues have me feeling pretty disappointed. I'm glad I leased.

After 1300 miles, learning more about my XC60
Just completed first couple of long trips .... so now willing to document my thoughts on my new 2017 XC60 (last year of the generation). Pro's: a) seats are really comfortable (this is a renowned attribute, but I can confirm); b) fuel economy is decent (averaging 25mpg so far); c) plenty of good features (heated steering wheel, ability to start the car from my iPhone etc). d) build quality seems good - nice thunk when closing door etc. Con's: a) handling is just OK; b) heated front windshield has annoyingly visible heating wires; c) infotainment and instrument panel is definitely showing it's age ... one example, no ability to see phone messages; no ability to change speed display to km/h (would have been useful when driving to Montreal)

VOLVO XC60 T6 DYNAMIC, 2017
Good mid size SUV, but $ $ $ ! Pros: all-wheel-drive, four-cylinder engines is powerful, regular gas a big plus, good MPG for this size, cabin is comfortable. Good road handling and modest cargo space. Cons : Noisy drive, hard suspension, small display screen for navigation and system control, outdated knob operated, is not touch screen and isn't user friendly. feels less luxurious than the same $ $ $ rivals.

"Great value"
Good looking, safe car. Nice clean luxury.

"Great long-term car"
I love my XC60 because my previous car ('11 VW Touareg TDI) was simply unreliable. Obscene repair costs, coupled with a diesel engine that ultimately resulted in a generous buyback made for an easy decision to trade it in. After much research, I ended up in my '17 XC60 for several reasons; chief among which is the low cost of operation. Midsized SUVs in this segment often run on premium fuel and still achieve underwhelming fuel economy - my car runs on regular and is averaging over 25 MPG in mostly city driving, yet can easily turn upwards of 30 MPG on longer highway stints. With high safety ratings, my insurance costs dropped as well, not to mention the fact that my particular car came with a 5-year free service contract because I was a former owner of a VW product... so I will have no out-of-pocket expenses related to my car until the early 2020s. The car is also extremely comfortable - the front seats are great, even for a tall (6'4") driver - there is ample cargo room and the audio system is extremely impressive, especially the levels of bass it can achieve. If I had to talk about a single gripe, it would be about the rear seat legroom - I sometimes have friends riding with me, and behind my seating position, it can be somewhat uncomfortable, but ultimately it is a small price (I don't even have to personally pay) to enjoy the car. I would absolutely recommend this car.

"I will not get rid of this SUV"
Real easy , I can buy any SUV I want , have thought about getting something newer . Test drove Acura , ALfa , BMW, Mercedes, the new Jeep Cherokee . Well after a month of reading reviews , you tubes , test drives I could not find a more solid , reliable , grea handling and driving SUV out there . My seat has 95000 miles on it and beats all the SUVs i test drove. I am glad i did I am keeping my 2010 XC 60 T 6 AWD I have no payment , and have just done some maintenance to her. The exterior still looks brand new . I plan on driving her over 250000 miles , This is a fun thing to own and just keep her up to date . Thank you to the original Volvo brand !Read less
