Introduced just two years ago, the Volvo V60 re-established the Swedish automaker in the compact luxury wagon segment, an admittedly small niche in which it once had a big presence. American car buyers mostly dismiss wagons in favor of larger or taller SUVs, but for many, a small wagon is the preferred alternative to wider, bulkier crossovers.

The 2017 V60 is essentially the wagon version of Volvo's S60 luxury sedan. It beams with understated Swedish style, offers more than 20 cubic feet of cargo room, and shares the sedan's performance, interior design, fuel efficiency, technology and safety features. A turbocharged 2.0-liter engine delivers plenty of power and an impressive 29 mpg in combined driving. For more zest, the T6 AWD R-Design model gets a more powerful, 302-horsepower version of the 2.0-liter engine.

For the base model, there's a stand-alone Sport package that boosts its already engaging handling. Add Volvo's outstanding safety features, sublime front seats and attractive interior and you've got a compelling case for the return of the wagon.

In this small segment, there's really only one main alternative you'll want to consider: the BMW 3 Series Wagon. It's roomier, rides better, and offers an optional diesel engine that returns 40 mpg on the highway. But it's also more expensive and doesn't offer a sportier engine upgrade as the V60 does.

If neither the BMW or V60 suits you, you might consider Volvo's XC70. It's larger and more suited to off-highway adventure than the V60. The similarly themed Audi Allroad is also worth a look. But overall, Volvo's V60 is a sensible, stylish pick for a small luxury wagon.

The 2017 Volvo V60's list of standard safety features includes antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, active front head restraints, and Volvo's City Safety system (part of Volvo's IntelliSafe technologies) that provides forward collision warning and can automatically apply the brakes at speeds up to 19 mph to prevent or minimize a front collision. Also standard is Volvo's On Call system that includes emergency assistance, automatic crash notification and stolen vehicle assistance.

More advanced safety technologies are offered on upper trim levels or as options. The optional Blind Spot Information System package includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors. A rearview camera is part of the Convenience package. Opting for the Technology package gets you a more capable forward collision mitigation system (including pedestrian and cyclist detection) and lane departure warning and intervention.

The government has not specifically crash-tested the V60, but the S60 sedan (on which the V60 is based) earned a perfect five-star rating for overall crash protection, with five stars each for total front and side crash protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the V60 its top rating of Good in the moderate-overlap and small-overlap front-impact tests. It also earned a Good score in side-impact, roof strength and whiplash protection (seats and head restraints) tests. Finally, the IIHS gave a Superior rating to the V60's optional forward collision warning and mitigation system.

In testing, a V60 T5 with the Sport package and summer tires came to a stop from 60 mph in 110 feet — a short distance but typical for a small luxury sedan or wagon with summer tires.

The 2017 Volvo V60 luxury wagon is available in T5, T5 Premier, T5 Dynamic, T5 Platinum and T6 AWD R-Design trim levels.

Standard features on the T5 include 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, LED running lights, automatic wipers, heated mirrors, a sunroof, front and rear foglights, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, cloth and simulated leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, eight-way power front seats with driver memory functions and power lumbar support, 40/20/40-split folding rear seats with power-folding head restraints, Volvo's Sensus Connect infotainment system, a 7-inch central display screen, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, voice controls, and an eight-speaker audio system with a CD player, satellite and HD radio, an auxiliary input jack and a USB interface.

Volvo's Premier trim adds silver roof rails, leather upholstery, a navigation system, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and customizable digital gauges.

Upgrades to the T5 Dynamic include 18-inch wheels, adaptive xenon headlights with washers, black roof rails, restyled front and rear bumpers, front sport seats and steering wheel-mounted shift paddles.

The Platinum builds off the Premier trim (though it keeps the Dynamic's adaptive xenon headlights) and adds interior accent lighting, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system, and all the features of the Convenience and Technology packages (explained below).

The performance-oriented T6 AWD R-Design trim level starts off with Premier equipment and adds 19-inch alloy wheels, adaptive xenon headlights, a sport-tuned suspension, keyless entry and ignition, power-folding mirrors and power-folding rear head restraints.

The Technology package, standard with the Platinum trim, consists of adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and intervention, automatic high beams, and a drowsy driver alert. The Convenience package includes keyless ignition and entry, a rearview camera, power-folding mirrors and a grocery bag holder in the cargo area. The Dynamic trim's Platinum package includes both the Technology and Convenience packages, plus the Harman Kardon sound system and ambient lighting.

There are a number of other packages and stand-alone options available on most V60 models. The Climate package adds an upgraded cabin air filter system, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a heated windshield, and heated windshield washer nozzles. The Sport package adds the sport-tuned suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels, and steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Notable stand-alone options include 18-inch alloy wheels, an automatic parallel parking system, sport front seats, built-in rear child booster seats and a dual-screen rear seat entertainment system.

The 2017 Volvo V60 T5 uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 240 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and is offered in both front- and all-wheel-drive. A standard automatic engine stop-start system shuts off the engine when the car is stopped to conserve fuel.

EPA fuel economy estimates are 29 mpg combined (25 city/36 highway). In testing, a V60 T5 returned 32.9 mpg on our highway-biased evaluation driving loop.

The V60 T6 AWD R-Design uses a more powerful version of the same engine (this one equipped with both a turbocharger and a supercharger) rated at 302 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. It's also hooked to an eight-speed transmission, only available with all-wheel drive, and returns an EPA-estimated 26 mpg combined (23 city/31 highway).

With Volvo's history of building wagons long on utility and safety but short on verve, you might be skeptical about the V60's performance. But the T5's turbocharged four-cylinder serves up strong acceleration without undue hesitation or racket, and the eight-speed automatic delivers quick, almost imperceptible shifts right when you want them. If you want more than just adequate acceleration, the T6 AWD R-Design delivers a strong punch that makes it feel more like a sport sedan.

Through turns, the V60's responsive steering delivers a reassuring amount of effort. We wouldn't call it a sport wagon, but the V60 isn't a sleepy, kid-carrying grocery-getter either. Overall, we like its balanced approach to ride and handling. The T5's available Sport package further sharpens the base model's handling, but what started as a big, soft comfortable ride can end up a little too stiff for some because of the firmer suspension and bigger wheels.

The 2017 Volvo V60 offers a stylish interior fitted with premium materials. The look is subtly classy and as appealing as that of any of its direct competitors. The cabin is quiet, with a serene atmosphere enhanced by the car's composed ride quality.

The V60 interior has a high-tech feel, especially on upper trim levels that feature a customizable gauge cluster. The audio system's phone-style number pad and surrounding buttons might look a bit antiquated relative to other luxury cars, but they offer easy control of basic stereo functions. For more complicated tasks such as selecting a media player playlist or programming the optional navigation system, the V60 relies on the standard Sensus system. It's fairly easy to use, though the multipurpose knob's location on the dash (rather than the center console) is not ideal and lacks a touchpad input like some rival systems.

The V60's front seats are some of the most comfortable and supportive in any car, although bigger folks might find themselves a little squished between the ample bolsters. Adults in the rear seats might also wish for a little more legroom, but it's livable for short hops and perfectly fine for younger kids. The available built-in booster seats are remarkably handy for anyone who needs to transport little ones.

Fold down those rear seatbacks and the V60 yields 43.8 cubic feet of cargo room. That's less space than some competitors, but the 40/20/20-split design provides flexibility that helps make the best use of the space available. The cargo area's two-position, rollout dog security net and available grocery bag holder are clever features that go beyond simply providing a big old space in which your stuff (and four-legged friends) can roll around.

Part of the 2017 Volvo V60 wagon's allure is that it feels at home on a variety of roads and in various settings, from long highway stretches to mountain roads. With 7.9 inches of ground clearance -- more than that of its Audi Allroad rival -- the V60 Cross Country can even do some light off-highway roaming. Although not as precise as a BMW 3 Series, the V60’s steering, brakes and acceleration are all what we’d consider performance-oriented, and certainly make it much more fun to drive than a Subaru Outback. Tying it all together are the V60's glorious engines, which are among our favorite 4-cylinders. Their power output feels far more than the 2.0-liter displacement would suggest. Standard variants make a commendable 240 horsepower, while R-Design and the limited-edition Polestar variants make 302 and 362 horsepower, respectively. All models now use a smooth-shifting 8-speed Geartronic automatic.

DRIVE-E While its name may be confusing -- and has nothing to do with electric propulsion -- the Drive-E engine family offers up surprisingly impressive fuel economy and even more impressive performance. It’s one of the smoothest, most refined 4-cylinder turbos on the market. CROSS COUNTRY The Cross Country adds an additional 2.6 inches of ground clearance and standard Haldex all-wheel drive (AWD), allowing the V60 to venture lightly off-road as well as tackle deeper snow drifts.

Not surprisingly, the 2017 V60 has all the Swedish refinement and simplicity associated long associated with Volvo cars. While we'll likely have to wait for next-gen versions before getting the astoundingly beautiful interior treatment and the latest tech upgrades of Volvo's new crop of cars like the XC90 and V90, that of the V60 is still quite attractive. All models seat five passengers and have intuitive controls -- just look at the human-figure ventilation directives! And because this is a wagon, there's ample cargo room in back, and even more if you fold the rear seats.

This may be the best-looking of Volvo's "60" series of cars, which includes the S60 sedan and XC60 SUV. The V60's profile is graceful and elegant, with a sloping roofline that extends the cargo area, but without making it look like a sedan wearing a backpack. In fact, some of us prefer it over the stubby-trunk look of the S60, and still others like its sleek, low-to-the-ground stance compared to the XC60. The Volvo V60 Cross Country sits a bit higher than the standard model, but the result is rugged, not awkward.

The standard 2017 Volvo V60 is available across a half-dozen trims, while the V60 Cross Country is offered in two. Even a base model is nicely equipped with 8-way-power front seats, moonroof, heated exterior mirrors and dual-zone climate control. The infotainment system is aging but has a 7-inch command screen with HD Radio tuner, Bluetooth connectivity, USB/auxiliary inputs and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Volvo furthers its safety reputation by making its City Safety low-speed automatic-braking system standard. The 2017 V60 also comes with three years/36,000 miles of complimentary maintenance. V60 Cross Country models have all-wheel drive, navigation, 18-inch wheels and skidplates.

Climb trims and you'll get a better and better equipped European wagon. Additional amenities include full leather interior, harman/kardon premium audio system, heated front and rear seats, and universal garage remote. Among the optional safety and driving aids are adaptive cruise control, collision-warning system with full auto brake and pedestrian/cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist and parking sensors. A sport chassis and integrated roof rails are also offered. All-wheel drive (AWD) can be had in lieu of front-drive (FWD) for lower models and is standard on the V60 Cross Country.

Volvo has streamlined its engine offerings in the 2017 V60 lineup, with all using a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder. But we'll say it again: These are phenomenal engines that punch above their weight. At the very least, a turbocharged T5 version makes 240 horsepower and can move this mover from 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds. T6 versions are turbocharged and supercharged. Yes, they use both kinds of forced induction, making 302 horsepower in T6 R-Design models and a whopping 362 horsepower in the V60 Polestar, which enables it to hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Note that V60 Cross Country models are available only with the 240-horsepower engine. All models are connected to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The V60 is rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds.2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 (T5)240 horsepower @ 5,600 rpm258 lb-ft of torque @ 1,500-4,800 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 25/36 mpg (FWD), 23/31 mpg (AWD), 22/30 mpg (V60 Cross Country AWD)2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged inline-4 (T6 AWD R-Design)302 horsepower @ 5,700 rpm295 lb-ft of torque @ 2,100-4,500 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 22/32 mpg2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged inline-4 (V60 Polestar)362 horsepower @ 7,000 rpm347 lb-ft of torque @3,100-5,100 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 20/27 mpgNote: Due to changes in EPA testing to more effectively reflect real-world conditions, some 2017 models show slightly lower fuel-economy scores than their 2016 versions.

The 2017 Volvo V60 wagon has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting just over $ 37,000 in front-drive form. As you climb trims, that price increases, with R-Design models just under $ 50,000 before options. If you're willing to spend the $ 60,000-plus it takes to buy a V60 Polestar, know that they're in short supply: Only about 200 Polestars have been allocated to the U.S. market, and that includes S60 Polestar sedans. The V60 Cross Country starts closer to $ 43,000. At its base price, the Volvo V60, even in all-wheel-drive form, undercuts the Audi A4 Allroad and BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo by several thousand dollars, while the more similar V60 Cross Country is in line with those competitors. Be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying for their new V60. Resale value is expected to trail that of the Audi Allroad.

2017 Volvo V60 Future Generations

Volvo V60 Overview and History

For the 2014 model year, Volvo is updating all of its mid-sized models, including the V60.
AB Volvo is a world-leading Swedish manufacturer of commercial vehicles, trucks, buses and construction equipment, drive systems for marine and industrial applications, aerospace components and financial services. But it did start out as a car manufacturer, founded by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larsson. The main purpose of the company was to produce the safest cars possible, following the death of Assar's wife in a car crash. The automaker was founded April 14, 1927 in the city of Gothenburg, as a spin-off from roller ball bearing maker SKF (Svenska Kullagerfabriken AB).

The name Volvo was originally registered in May 1915 as a separate company within SKF AB and as a registered trademark with the intention to be used for a special series of ball bearing, but this idea was only used for a short period of time and SKF decided to use "SKF" as the trademark for all its bearing products. Volvo AB began to function on the 10th of August 1926 when the SKF Sales Manager Assar Gabrielsson and Engineer Gustav Larson, started production of 10 prototypes and set up the car-manufacturing business Volvo AB within SKF group. Volvo AB was introduced at the Stockholm stock exchange in 1935 and SKF then decided to sell its shares in the company.

The first series produced Volvo automobile, called 'ÖV4' left the factory on 14 April 1927. Just 996 cars were produced between 1927-1929. 'ÖV4' was replaced by model PV651 in April 1929. Its success on the market helped Volvo buy out their engine manufacturer and thus become a serious car producer. By 1931, it was already returning its first dividend to shareholders.

After it reached a production milestone of 10,000 cars in May 1932, Volvo then targeted a new demographic segment, aiming to make their cars cheaper, a car “for the people”. This was going to be the PV 51 which came out in 1936 which was a smaller version of the PV36.

The PV444 was one of the most significant cars of the war era, the first true small car, a mixture of American flair and European size, it would become a resonant success and the best sold model throughout the 60s. The P1800 was Volvo's first sports car, made in the early 60s and it was so popular that it was featured in the hit TV series “The Saint” starring Roger Moore.

Safety and quality were still paramount for Volvo and that's why the 240 series which replaced the 140 had even more safety innovations in that department, like crumple zones, rear facing child seats and collapsible steering columns. Together with the smaller 340 models, they would make for most of the sales during the 70s and 80s for Volvo.

The 90s brought with them a totally new model, the 850, a front-wheel drive, executive car which won numerous awards for handling and safety features. By now, productions costs were mounting up and Volvo was one of the few independent producers out there, after a proposed deal with Renault fell through in 1993. This forced the company to seek new marketing strategies and that's how the sleeker S40 and V40 models were introduced in the factory's production line.

The new models brought a breath of fresh air, just like the C70 coupe and convertible, which are responsible for revitalizing the Volvo image while keeping in tune with the old tradition of safety and quality.

The buyout of Volvo Cars was announced on January 28, 1998. Until then, Volvo Cars was owned by AB Volvo (the commercial vehicles group). In the following year acquisition for Volvo Cars by American car maker Ford Motor Co. was completed at a price of $ 6.45 billion USD. Volvo used the funds from the sale of the automobile division to finance the purchase of Scania, another leading Swedish truck manufacturer, but the deal was stopped for competition reasons by the European Union. Instead Volvo acquired the commercial vehicles division of French Renault and the American truck manufacturer Mack Trucks (which was owned by Renault at the time). As part of the arangement to buy Renault Trucks, the former parent company, Renault, bought in turn 20 percent in shares in AB Volvo. Among the reasons why Volvo took the initiative to sell the automobile manufacturing was the increasing development costs for new car models, coupled with the fact that it was a relatively small producer. The strategy was instead to grow as a truck manufacturer where it had a stronger market position.

Volvo Automotive's motto is "Volvo for life" attributed to the reliability and safety of their cars. Volvo means "I roll" in Latin. Combined with their company symbol, (commonly mistaken for the male symbol) which actually stands for iron ore and according to the company, represents "Rolling Strength".

2017 Volvo V60 Consumer Reviews

T5 Premier 4dr Wagon (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
Panel display not for an old timer.
When brake pedal is fully depressed, engine shuts off. This is a "gas-saving " feature. It can be disabled but this needs to be done every time the car is started; terrible idea. There is no oil dip stick; oil level must be read by going to menu on dash -- ugh. There is no spare tire; instead a can of "fix-a-flat" is supplied; stupid. We previously owned two V70's ; unfortunately, these are no longer made so we had to downsize to a V60 -obviously much less cargo room. It is a nice car to drive.

V60 should be one of your cars
This is a Polestar chipped model. Not sure if the regular R-Design shifts properly.

T5 4dr Wagon (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
Sad with regrets
I was really excited when I purchased the car. It was less than a year old with only 10k miles. Everything seemed good until around 30k. The car has various issues with the computer system. The owners book about the car is on the system computer. Also to find out your oil and other levels it’s complicated and on the car computer system. To get an oil change you can’t take it to any place to get done. So, aside from the awful dealership to get the oil changed, finding somewhere local is difficult. Anyway, what I thought was a great buy has turned into a nightmare. The system computer is awful! Don’t buy!!

"Great ride and comfort."
Great handling, does well in snow, great quality.

"Volvo T6 R-Design AWD"
The styling and attention to design detail on this car is very good, but the trouble I have experienced and maintenance costs are overwhelming. Also, only a handful of auto repair shops have the proprietary equipment and knowledge to maintain the four (4) on-board computers. My other car is a 2008 CTS Cadillac of which I have never had a problem and only had to perform the standard maintenance procedures. Cadillac 2008 visits to repair shop: 0 (zero); Volvo 2015 T6: (7) seven. If you buy a Volvo T6 make sure you have a large supply of Tylenol for headache relief. I would never, ever buy another Volvo!

"The V60 (2015-2018) version is Superb!"
I LOVE my 2017 Volvo V60 R Design AWD Platinum so much because it has the perfect balance of design, practicality, powerful engine and fun to drive that I have never found in any previous car I have owned before. People may be falling in love with newer car technologies like touch screens but I prefer the reliability and faultless quality of the analog system the V60 has. The V60 boasts the best seats in any car ever made, a superb Harman Kardon sound system and a Polestar tuned powerful engine, what else would anyone want in their car? It has the outgoing design language of all Volvo’s but it still turns people’s heads on the road and thumbs up from lookers at traffic stop lights. Plan to keep it until it diesRead less
