For some shoppers, a minivan just doesn't have the right capabilities. Even large, crossover-based SUVs won't do the trick. That's where hulking three-row, luxury vehicles such as the 2017 Infiniti QX80 come into play. With real towing power, high-quality interior appointments and a big-SUV attitude, the QX80 can shuttle your whole crew, and it can do it with style.

Equipped with a powerful V8 engine, the QX80 can pull up to 8,500 pounds. Its robust optional four-wheel-drive system can take you far off the beaten path. Or it can just transport you and seven of your closest friends to and from the local diner. The QX comes with upscale standard equipment such as tri-zone climate control and a 360-degree camera, and it is available with a suspension that gives it serious handling skill for its size — definitely not an attribute you typically associate with a three-row SUV. Thanks to its overall competence and several unique strengths, the 2017 Infiniti QX80 is definitely one of our top picks in the luxury, three-row SUV segment.

The 2017 Infiniti QX80 is a full-size luxury SUV that offers seating for up to eight passengers. It's offered in base and Limited trim levels. The base comes with a choice of rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, and the Limited comes exclusively with four-wheel drive.

Standard features on the base QX80 are abundant, so you won't be missing out on much, especially if you choose a few of the available options packages. The Limited model is a good option for buyers who just want to check every box and get all the equipment the QX80 offers.

There are quite a few standard features on the QX80, so calling it a base model is misleading. Nonetheless, even in the base trim level, it comes with a 5.6-liter V8 engine (400 horsepower and 413 pound-feet), a seven-speed automatic transmission, rear-wheel drive (four-wheel drive with low-range gearing is optional), 20-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights and foglights, automatic high-beam control, a sunroof, roof rails, power-folding and auto-dimming mirrors, a power liftgate, front and rear parking sensors, keyless entry and ignition, automatic tri-zone climate control, leather upholstery, an eight-way power-adjustable and heated driver seat (with two-way power lumbar adjustment), a six-way power front passenger seat, driver-seat memory settings, second-row captain's chairs (a 60/40-split bench seat is available as a no-cost option), a power-folding 60/40-split third-row seat, and a power-adjustable, heated steering wheel.

The QX80 is also packed with quite a bit of technology, most of which you would expect at this price point. Standard features include a 360-degree parking camera, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, an 8-inch touchscreen display, a navigation system, voice controls, and a 13-speaker Bose sound system with a CD player, satellite radio, an auxiliary audio jack and a USB port.

If you're looking to add a few more items to your QX80, you'll find that options are arranged in packages, some of which require other option packages as prerequisites. If it's advanced safety features you're after, the Driver Assistance package comes with adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning and intervention, forward collision warning (with pedestrian detection), stolen vehicle notification and secondary driver services such as geo-fencing and maximum speed notifications. If you have the Driver Assistance package, you can also add the Theater package, which includes a dual-screen rear entertainment system, a 120-volt household-type power outlet and heated second-row seats with a power tip-up feature for easier third-row access. The Tire and Wheel package gets you 22-inch wheels and all-season performance tires.

Going for the Deluxe Technology package gets you all the previously mentioned packages plus adaptive front lighting, headlight washers, Infiniti's Hydraulic Body Motion Control suspension, an upgraded climate control system, upgraded leather upholstery, special wood trim, ventilated front seats and a 15-speaker Bose surround-sound audio system.

Finally, the QX80 Limited comes with just about everything standard (including four-wheel drive) and adds its own distinctive interior and exterior trim. For both the base and Limited trims, in-car Wi-Fi is available as a stand-alone option.

Each vehicle typically comes in multiple versions that are fundamentally similar. The ratings in this review are based on our full test of the 2015 Infiniti QX80 Limited (5.6L V8 | 7-speed automatic | AWD ).

NOTE: Since this test was conducted, the current Infiniti QX80 has received some revisions, but most of them were minor trim-level changes. Our findings remain broadly applicable to this year's Infiniti QX80.

From behind the wheel of the 2017 Infiniti QX80, you soon begin to feel invincible. With each mile you feel coddled, cradled and comfortable, but most of all, you feel invincible. This full-size SUV has a body-on-frame construction and a truck-type chassis, yet it handles and rides exceptionally well. The optional Hydraulic Body Motion Control helps, reducing body lean in corners and enhancing the ride. Although the QX80 weighs almost three tons, the 400-horsepower 5.6-liter V8 and its 7-speed automatic transmission move it with certainty but not without sacrifices in fuel economy. The big QX80 really thrives on the highway where the interior is extremely quiet and the ride defines “smooth.” In tighter spaces, such as the grocery-store parking lot, that size is problematical, but the Around View camera and front and rear parking sensors help describe the boundaries. All-wheel drive (AWD) offers high- and low-range modes.

PREDICTIVE FORWARD-COLLISION WARNINGIf a vehicle ahead of you stops suddenly, the QX80, which senses velocity and distance, delivers an alert so you can take appropriate action. However, unlike some more advanced systems that will intervene and brake for you if necessary, the new QX80 will not take action on its own.ALL THE OTHER DRIVING AIDS/SAFETY FEATURESPurchase the new QX80 with the Driver Assistance Package, and the SUV is chock-full of useful driving aids and safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning and the innovative Backup Collision Intervention that applies the brakes to avoid a collision when traveling in reverse, like backing out of that tight parking spot.

The 2017 Infiniti QX80 certainly delivers the utmost luxury buyers of high-end SUVs expect. Leather and wood are everywhere, and every surface, every material, every shape remind the owner that this is a premium vehicle. The analog clock, an Infiniti trademark, looks like a fine wristwatch. There’s seating for either seven or eight passengers in three rows; with seven the middle row has wonderful captain’s chairs, with eight it’s a folding bench. Either way, there’s generous space in all directions, and 3rd-row accommodations are suitable for most adults and have convenient power folding for when cargo is the priority.

Nobody will overlook the new 2017 Infiniti QX80 as it stretches nearly 209 inches long and stands almost 76 inches tall. But size aside, this is a boldly styled, athletically proportioned SUV with a tough stance, old-school detailing and wearing enough chrome for four Bentleys and a Rolls. No apologies here. Up front is one of the boldest statements of a grille/headlight/hood layout that you’ll find. Along the front fenders are big chrome vents. Large windows provide good views while massive rear lights wrap around the corners and stretch well into the liftgate.

There are three trim levels to choose from: the base QX80 with rear-wheel drive (RWD), QX80 AWD (all-wheel drive) and QX80 AWD Limited. Standard equipment includes leather seating, navigation system, power liftgate, tri-zone climate control, moonroof, heated front seats and steering wheel, power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, and Around View monitor with Moving Object Detection. Also included is a one-year complimentary subscription to the Infiniti Connection telematics system with concierge service and vehicle information sent to your phone, a 13-speaker Bose AM/FM/CD/DVD Premium Audio System with USB connection and Bluetooth streaming, and front and rear sonar parking sensors.

The new 2017 QX80 Limited adds Welcome Lighting under stainless-steel side steps, Truffle Brown leather with silver stitching, Matte Finish Ash Wood accents and many additional trim and luxury appearance items. Most options are bundled into various packages: A Driver Assistance Package, which we recommend, has several safety features including blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure warning; the Theatre Package brings dual 7-inch rear-seat monitors, wireless headphone and remote control to keep the kids happy; a Tire and Wheel Package includes larger 22-inch 14-spoke wheels; and a Split Bench Seat Package increases seating capacity from seven to eight passengers.

Infiniti’s new QX80 is powered by an impressive 5.6-liter V8 that makes 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. Both RWD and AWD models have Hill Start Assist and Snow Mode to help you get moving when roads are slick. AWD models operate with a rear-drive bias but constantly adjust power between the front and rear wheels as necessary. All models feature a 7-speed automatic transmission with a manual-shift mode and downshift rev-matching. Towing capacity is a stout 8,500 pounds. One compromise to such a big and powerful SUV is fuel efficiency, or lack thereof. With RWD the EPA fuel-economy numbers are 14 mpg in the city, 20 mpg on the highway, and with AWD those numbers fall to 13 mpg and 19 mpg. 5.6-liter V8 400 horsepower @ 5,800 rpm 413 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 14/20 mpg (RWD), 13/19 mpg (AWD) Note: Due to changes in EPA testing to more effectively reflect real-world conditions, some 2017 models show slightly lower fuel-economy scores than their 2016 versions.

The 2017 Infiniti QX80 has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting around $ 66,000 for a RWD model; adding AWD is roughly $ 3,000 more. Most option packages can increase the price by several thousand dollars, and a fully loaded Infiniti QX80 AWD Limited can be well over $ 80,000. We recommend the Driver Assistance Package and its safety enhancements. At its entry price, the QX80 is in line with the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, Range Rover Sport and Lincoln Navigator and undercuts the starting prices of the Cadillac Escalade and Lexus LX 570. Be sure to check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying for the 2017 Infiniti QX80. The new QX80's long-term resale value is expected to be good; better than those of the Lincoln or Cadillac, similar to that of the Mercedes but somewhat behind that of the segment leader, the Lexus LX.

Infiniti QX80 Overview and History

The Infiniti QX80 offers a fresh new exterior design and a more crafted interior for 2015, plus additional standard features and technology, bringing Infiniti's premium full-size luxury SUV closer in look and feel to the dramatic new Infiniti Q50 sports sedan.
Infiniti is Nissan's luxury car division. Established in 1989 to compete on the US premium auto market alongside brands like fellow Japanese Acura and Lexus as well as European-based BMW,  Audi and BMW, Infiniti managed to create a global network in a fairly little amount of time. Its history can be traced back two decades ago when the company's first vehicles were sold.

Part of the Oriental commercial tsunami, Infiniti swept across the American land with remarkable speed but with little strength. Freshly born, it did not scream loud enough to be heard. Sales of their first model, the Q45 were fairly poor as a result of what is widely believed to have been slightly bad advertising. In attempt to draw attention to their cars, Infiniti resorted to a series of Zen-inspired commercials that showed the car very briefly or not at all in some cases.

However, Infiniti concentrated resources in a second ad campaign and production of superior quality automobiles that eventually paid off. Based on Nissan's platforms, most Infinitis are redesigned models, except their latest range which includes  the sporty G37 and the luxurious SUV FX that mark the brand's attempt of becoming a truly separate entity.

No matter how good or bad Infiniti's ad strategy was, its vehicles were truly attention worthy. The Q45 for example sported a brawny 278 hp V8 engine, four wheel steering and active suspension, all of these features having been a premiere for automobiles in its class. Meticulously executed trims and fine finishes further added to the car's overall appearance.

Even the Infiniti badge hints at the extent the company would go to develop a quality top-selling product: far. Comparisons are lost within infinity thus 'far' becomes incommensurable. The horizontal bars shaped to form a stylized highway meet somewhere close to the horizon which is never a fixed point.

Besides clever product badging and advertising, Infiniti has been striving to stay on top ever since it became a stable brand. If the car-market context of that time is to be taken into consideration, Infiniti did good considering that European markets had surpassed traditional brands like Lincoln and Cadillac.

The beginning of the 1990's saw Infiniti launching a second model, the M30 which sold rather slowly compared to the Q45. Towards the mid 90's however, Infiniti would release the QX4, a modified version of the Nissan Pathfinder, making the company the first to have sold a luxury SUV right after specialized manufacturers like Jeep and Land Rover.

After experiencing poor sales due to insufficiently developed models and wrong demographic targeting, Infiniti was nearing extension. Just like Hyundai, Infiniti did not cease to exist but instead focused on developing a newer range of vehicles that ultimately ensured the brand's survival. The marque entered a new stage in 2003 with the release of the G35, a model predating the launch of the G37, a model farther from anything Infiniti has done in the past.

The brand is presently making its way through European markets. Since its foundation, it has limitlessly grown, currently including 230 dealers in 15 countries. Its global operations have grown exponentially, having stretched form Mexico to Russia and from Ukraine to China and Taiwan. As with the majority of Japanese car makers, Infinti emphasizes the importance of technological improvements. Among the latest innovations, it has delivered the regenerative Anti Scratch Advanced Paint or ASAP as well as the Around View, an optics system that allows the driver to see a complete image of the car's surroundings.

Great SUV if can overlook a few small things
Top priorities for this purchase were safety, luxury and value. The QX80 delivers in all these areas. Great ride and comfort, top of the line safety features and a big luxurious package. Only small things I can pick out include a hard time getting the SUV in gear from park, maintenance light already popped on after 2 weeks ( I though this brand was more reliable than it's turning out to be) and the fuel economy is worse than I thought. That said I'm very pleased with the purchase and I'm happy knowing my family is in big safe SUV.

Signature 4dr SUV (5.6L 8cyl 7A)
Exactly what we needed.
We wanted to upgrade one of our Acura MDX's to something more spacious. We purchased our 2017 QX80 in 2017 and I have been driving over a year. It's been great so far. My wife and I were really surprised about the maneuverability compared with our MDX. It's a big vehicle but is quite responsive and does not drive like a truck. The cabin is quiet and comfortable. My wife thought it was big at first but after driving a couple of times she is perfectly comfortable with the larger size. The QX80 responds more like a mid-size SUV. It fits in our garage fine and accommodates 6 comfortably. Access to the third row seating is excellent as the 2nd row seats allow for easy access. Now that my wife is working from home more frequently (with me), she is now prefers driving our QX80. As do I... Our daughter will get the MDX soon and I suspect we might need another QX80. It's our first Infiniti and I can say it will not be our last. I have found it to be a solid vehicle and have been extremely impressed with the Infiniti Dealership. We have had absolutely no problems with it. The storage space is excellent with the third row down and provides the additional space we needed. I am happy with the Bose sound system and although the MP3 USB utilization is a bit outdated with old FAT table limitations. It works fine if you structure the music library accordingly. We did not want the full entertainment system package so I cannot comment about that. I was able to get the front to play AVI but it requires some tech know-how for the video formatting. I find my IPad with streaming more efficient anyway. Really the only downside is the gas consumption compared to our previous MDX although I doubt it's worse than any other V8 in it's class. I get about 12.5-13.5mpg around town. It does much better on the highway but I rarely need to drive long distances anymore. We love it!

Love MY QX80
Owned my QX80 Signature Series for over a year, and still love it. It handles excellent on dry roads, and in the rain, and high winds. It has the comfort that is needed for trips. It has the power to continue to perform when loaded with passengers. And a cargo trailer.

Drive it love it QX80
Great drive good economy for its size only let down is that it’s not overly good for carrying cargo. Tows very well and everybody in the family loves it.

"Beautiful vehicle!"
I can't say enough good things about this vehicle it's absolutely gorgeous and everyone comments on it a real head-turner. It's huge but drives like a sports car when taking tight turns (not tippy at all). It's not inexpensive but you really get a lot for your money theater package, third row seating, 22" wheels. Blind spot detector and front and rear parking sensors with camera above when reversing makes parking and backing up fool-proof. The finish both inside and out is top of the line mine is pearl white with grey leather. I've owned BMW, Cadillac and really none compares to this. The gas mileage is better than expected at 21 mpg hwy. Towing capacity is the highest in its class (horse trailers even). Driving it is a dream.

"Pretty much a good full size SUV"
Other than design issues in combining the CAT with the Exhaust Manifold and not covering it in the warranty and second and third row seats that don't fold completely flat like the Navigator and the fact that Nisson pulled the recall on the timing chain, this is a really solid ride. Be prepared to spend $ 1600 for a headlight assembly and big bucks for most other parts or repairs done at the dealer. 6 lug rims and 22" rubber came with mine and it is limiting in what type of replacement tire can be used but it was part of a package. Basically this is the same as the Armada Platinum because it is built on the frame of a 3/4 Titan. This car is definitely designed more for long distance highway rides in absolute comfort than it is for hauling stuff inside. The 8500 towing capacity is exceptional and the tech package is really easy to use with some practice. Carpets in the rear cargo area could be more plush and the buyer should expect that in a car that costs upwards of 76K with options. Mine is used and purchased with 109K miles on it but so far I get 20 mpg on the highway at 70+ mph and 15 mpg average in city driving. Oil passages are narrow so using 0-20 or 5-30 full synthetic can help run cooler so mpg can be better. I got a deal on the 2011 but the mechanical issues with the CAT and timing chain were corrected beginning in the 2014 model year and if I had the funds I would have got that year. All of my CAT and timing chain issues have been corrected by the dealer or previous owner so I should have many years of trouble free driving.Read less

"Wonderful car/suv"
Love my 2017 QX80. Always wanted one! Found a 1 year old with 22,000 at Enterprise. Car is everything I ever wanted. Naysayers are simply wrong. Mileage is reasonable for what it is - 14-15 mpg in mix. Highway is 16-18, sometimes 18. Tech is great. Looks are subjective, but I have always liked it. Expect to keep it for a long, long time.
