Credit Audi for knowing when to leave well enough alone. The 2017 Audi A7 carries over from last year with only minor changes and that's plenty OK with us. Possibly to ease the sting of its beloved, discontinued diesel-engine model, Audi introduced a new Competition trim level that pumps out a little more horsepower and style.

Other than those minor changes, the A7's traditional strengths remain. It's standard V6 engine delivers exceptional performance while the standard all-wheel drive makes the A7 a viable option in any climate. It also features one of the most richly decorated interiors you'll find in this price range. The only real catch is that rear headroom suffers relative to the mechanically identical A6 sedan, and you can get a comparable A6 for thousands less.

But the sedan is sedate by comparison and it can't match the A7's versatile hatchback trunk. In fact, the only real true rival out there is the Porsche Panamera and its base price begins about where a loaded A7 ends.

There are other "four-door coupes" to consider like the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class and BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe. Both make compelling cases with style and speed, but lack the cargo prowess of the A7's liftgate hatch. And by comparison with the Audi's modern-cool interior, the Benz's cabin comes up looking a little plain. No car is an easy choice in this class, but the 2017 A7's unique attributes make it tough to resist.

Standard safety equipment on the 2017 Audi A7 includes antilock disc brakes, stability control, a blind-spot warning system, front and rear parking sensors, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and front knee airbags. Rear side airbags are a stand-alone option, while the Driver Assistance package adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, a corner-view camera system and lane keeping assist.

The standard Audi Pre Sense Basic system warns the driver, tensions the seatbelts and closes the windows if a potential collision is detected, while the Pre Sense Rear system (also standard) uses the brake light to warn traffic behind the vehicle in the event of a rear collision. The Audi Pre Sense Plus system (included in the Driver Assistance package) can do all that, plus fully tighten the seatbelts and automatically apply the brakes full force to mitigate the severity of an imminent crash.

In brake testing, we evaluated an A7 3.0T with 20-inch wheels and summer tires that came to a stop from 60 mph in 106 feet. That's a short distance for a car in this class.

The 2017 Audi A7 is a midsize luxury four-door hatchback available in three trim levels: Premium Plus, Prestige and new Competition Prestige. The higher-performance2016 Audi S7 and2016 Audi RS 7 are reviewed separately.

Standard equipment on the Premium Plus includes 19-inch wheels, Audi Drive Select (providing adjustable settings for steering, accelerator and transmission response), Audi Pre Sense Basic and Rear (see "Safety," below for more info), a blind-spot warning system, automatic adaptive LED headlights, LED running lights and taillights, a power liftgate, automatic wipers, auto-dimming power-folding heated mirrors, a sunroof, front and rear parking sensors, an adaptive rear spoiler and keyless entry and ignition.

Inside you'll find four-zone automatic climate control, a power-adjustable steering wheel with shift paddles, leather upholstery, heated eight-way power seats (with four-way driver lumbar adjustment), driver memory settings, an 8-inch motorized pop-up display screen, a rearview camera, a navigation system with voice controls,Audi Connect (providing Google Earth-enhanced navigation, Google search functions, smartphone-app integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and 4G LTE with mobile Wi-Fi hotspot capability), the MMI infotainment system with console-mounted controls, Bluetooth and a 14-speaker Bose surround sound system with a CD player, satellite radio and USB audio connectivity.

The Prestige adds LED ambient interior lighting, ventilated front seats with passenger lumbar adjustments, a head-up display and power-closing doors.

New for 2017 is the Competition Prestige trim level, which features 20-inch titanium-finish wheels, a firmer suspension, a high-performance rear differential, sport seats, upgraded leather, a flat-bottom steering wheel, black cloth headliner, and various styling flourishes like high-gloss black trim pieces, red brake calipers, and brushed metal inlays.

Most A7 options come bundled in various packages. The Cold Weather package includes heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel. The S Line Sport package adds special 19-inch wheels, sport-themed exterior styling flourishes, a firmer suspension and an available add-on Black Optic package that contributes 20-inch wheels and high-gloss black trim on the grille and window surrounds.

The Driver Assistance package includes automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, Audi Pre Sense Plus (including a forward collision mitigation system with automatic braking), a corner-view camera system (front and rear) and lane keeping assist. The Comfort Seating Package throws in upgraded leather and ventilated power front seats with massage and memory functions.

Other notable options include rear side airbags, walnut interior accents and two items limited to the Prestige: a night-vision camera system with pedestrian detection and a Bang & Olufsen audio system.

The 2017 Audi A7 comes standard with a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 (3.0T) that generates 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. In Competition trim, the same engine delivers 340 hp. All-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission are standard.

Of note, Audi has discontinued sales of its TDI diesel engine models pending regulatory review of its emissions standards.

In performance testing, an A7 3.0T accelerated to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, which is very quick for this class of car with a six-cylinder engine. EPA fuel economy estimates for the A7 3.0T stand at 24 mpg combined (20 mpg city/30 mpg highway).

Although it's not billed as the high-performance model in the lineup (the S7 and RS 7 fill that role), the A7 is an impressive performer . The supercharged V6 is a stunning engine that provides nearly instantaneous throttle response and the kind of acceleration you would typically associate with a V8-powered sedan.

The A7 comes with Audi's Drive Select feature, which alters throttle response, transmission shift characteristics and steering effort via four different modes: Comfort, Auto, Dynamic and Individual. We've found it a challenge to dial in exactly the right settings for our taste, and the steering feel doesn't impress us in any of the settings.

Along with this dull steering, a hefty curb weight and sizable exterior prevent the A7 from feeling like a sport sedan. You can hustle it along, but it doesn't offer much enjoyment or engagement in return. We suggest sticking with the smaller 19-inch wheels, as they provide a more supple ride and won't appreciably detract from the A7's real-world handling.

The A7's interior is thoughtfully designed and tightly constructed, with excellent materials quality. Subtle wood accents add to the premium feel along with subtle ambient lighting. Audi's Multi Media Interface (MMI) controls audio, communication and navigation functions with a knob on the console and a pop-up dashboard screen. MMI boasts logical menus and crisp graphics, and after a short time it becomes very intuitive.

The A7 is also equipped with Audi Connect, which includes 4G LTE data connectivity with mobile Wi-Fi for up to eight devices, Google Earth data for the navigation system and simplified Google search for POIs. The Google Earth feature is a cool concept, but in practice it's an example of form over function, as the "enhanced" map can be more difficult to read at a glance compared to a conventional navigation map.

Fitting five passengers in the A7 is quite feasible, as long as the passengers in back aren't very tall. Headroom up front is acceptable, but the sleek, sloping roofline limits rear headroom. It also makes getting in and out of the rear seats more difficult. There's plenty of legroom in both the front and back seats although it's worth noting that the A7 Competition seats only two passengers in the backseat.

The A7's hatchback design enables easy loading of luggage and larger items that might not fit in the trunk of a conventional sedan. Official cargo capacity is 24.5 cubic feet, but lowering the rear seatbacks increases that volume significantly.

Even in the "base" A7 with the 333-horsepower supercharged V6, the A7 never lacks for power, proven with its 0-60-mph time of 5.2 seconds. It's a great drivetrain, with the engine providing smooth power at almost any speed, and we do mean any, as this car will easily find you at extra-legal speeds in no time. If you want more, there's the S7, with its 450-horsepower V8, but for the truly power hungry, there's the RS 7, now available in either 560-horsepower or 605-horsepower models. Yet there's so much more to the A7 family than just raw speed. There's the refined steering, the comfortable ride that turns into razor-sharp handling at the flick of the Audi Drive Select button, and the stellar brakes. Yet it's also pure luxury. The interior is a rolling work of art, with soft leathers, a sculpted dash and comfortable seating for everyone.

INTERIOR REFINEMENTAudi's well-earned reputation for interior quality is on display in the A7. Everything you touch feels good to your hands, from the knurled dials for the audio and climate controls, to the leather steering wheel. The 8-inch display that rises from the center dash when you start the car? Pure sci-fi cool.GOOGLE NAVIGATIONBuilt-in navigation is great, but a lot of people prefer the accuracy of their smartphones. However, the A7 actually comes with Google Earth and traffic, making it every bit as up-to-date and accurate as your smartphone. It can even do Google Street View thanks to 4G TLE connectivity.

There's so much to like inside the Audi A7 it's hard to know where to start. There are high-quality materials, like standard leather seating, with an upgrade to diamond-stitched higher-quality hides in S7 and RS 7 models. The A7 seats five, but the S7 and RS 7 seat four because of the pair of contoured rear seats instead of a 3-person bench. Thanks to the standard 8-way-power/4-way-lumbar adjustment and power-operated steering-wheel adjustment, it's easy for drivers of various shapes and sizes to be comfortable. And, in a nod to practicality, the A7 is a hatchback, with plenty of cargo space.

Ever since its debut in 2012, the A7's fastback shape has been a defining element. Sure, beauty is subjective, but most agree this is a fine-looking car from virtually any angle. Audi calls it a "sedan," but a rear power-operated hatch makes it a hatchback. It offers easy access to the cargo area with its 24.5 cubic feet of space. Models are visually distinguished through exterior styling, with the higher-performing S7 boasting its own front and rear bumper design, and the almighty RS 7 featuring a carbon-fiber splitter and diffusor. All models include a sunroof and electric rear spoiler.

With a base price of about $ 70,000, and an Audi badge on the nose, you'd expect even the base A7 to come nicely equipped. With standard features like a supercharged V6 engine, 4-zone climate control, an interior awash in leather and wood, and heated 8-way-power front seats, you'd be right. Also standard on the 2017 A7 is navigation, a rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring (Audi calls it "side assist”), and a 10-speaker AM/FM/CD player with satellite and HD Radio with two USB ports. Newly standard this year is Audi connect and Audi smartphone interface, both of which enhance your smartphone ownership experience.

There's a long list of options for the Audi A7 lineup, not the least of which is choosing among A7, S7 and RS 7. Beyond that there are massaging front seats with ventilation, and an available fighter-jet-style head-up display that projects pertinent driver information onto the windshield. The new Driver Assistance package adds active lane assist, adaptive cruise control, corner-view cameras and a host of other technology, including Audi pre sense plus, which applies the brakes to avoid or lessen the impact of a frontal collision. A new A7 Competition model adds more power and better handling.

There are five different versions of three engines available for the 2017 A7 family. The A7 itself comes with a 333-horsepower supercharged 3.0-liter V6; the A7 Competition offers 340 horsepower. Audi S7 models come with a turbocharged 4.0-liter 450-horsepower V8 engine. As an RS 7, that twin-turbo V8 delivers 560 horsepower, and 605 horsepower in the RS 7 Performance model. Every Audi A7 and RS 7 comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and quattro AWD is also standard; the S7 comes with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. But don't worry, none of these cars is a slouch, with even the "base" A7 scooting to 60 mph from a standstill in just over five seconds.3.0-liter supercharged V6 (A7) 333 horsepower @ 5,300-6,500 rpm 325 lb-ft of torque @ 2,900-5,300 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 21/29 mpg 3.0-liter supercharged V6 (A7 Competition) 340 horsepower @ 5,300-6,500 rpm 325 lb-ft of torque @ 2,900-5,300 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 21/29 mpg 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 (S7) 450 horsepower @ 5,500-6,400 rpm 406 lb-ft of torque @ 1,400-5,700 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/27 mpg 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 (RS 7) 560 horsepower @ 5,700-6,600 rpm 516 lb-ft of torque @ 1,750-5,500 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 15/25 mpg 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 (RS 7) 605 horsepower @ 6,100-6,800 rpm 516 lb-ft of torque @ 1,750-6,000 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 15/25 mpg  Note: Due to changes in EPA testing to more effectively reflect real-world conditions, some 2017 models show slightly lower fuel-economy scores than their 2016 versions.

The Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for a base 2017 Audi A7 starts just below $ 70,000; add $ 7,500 for the new Competition model. The higher-performance S7 starts at just over the $ 80,000 mark. If that's not enough, the Audi RS 7 starts at about $ 111,600, and the uber RS 7 Performance will run you $ 130,500. Note that's all before adding options; start checking those boxes and the price escalates quickly. The 2017 A7 splits the difference between the CLS-Class 4-door coupe on the low end and the BMW 640i Gran Coupe on the high end. Before buying, be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others are paying for their new A7. The A7's residual value has traditionally held up better than those of its Mercedes and BMW rivals.

Audi A7 Overview and History

A new Audi A7 Sportback was introduced in 2017, building up on the previous model and adding even sharper looks, more digitization, and increased performance. Audi has spared no effort in revising the 2015 model year A7 Sportback, with the spacious five-door coupe now being even more powerful and attractive due to new engine configurations, new transmissions, visual and tech enhancements.
Shower gels and generally beauty-product brands have a way of appealing to customers by thrusting desire through sensorial-related names and presentation of their offers. Olfactory sense-stroking balms and soothing cashmere-touch night cream-approaches are basically the most commonly used methods of conveying beauty and easy customer-access to deeply-rooted sensorial pampering, unless beauty is forged out of steel and thousands of accurately engineered parts.

Automobiles undoubtedly fall into the latter category, and what better way of striking at least one of the remaining three senses if not building an image of a mighty engine roar or purr of a loyal cylinder sextet cradled under the bonnet of an Audi car? Audi translates as 'listen' from latin and besides expressing an unanimously accepted passion of the motorist, that of listening to the engine as if it were a never before heard dissertation on mechanics blended with boisterous 'deux ex machina' comments and demonstrations, it also marks the birth of Audi following Horch's demise, the previous name of the company that can be traced back to 1899.

Its founder, August Horch was forced out of his own company in 1909 due to trademark infringements, 8 years after the first automobile had rolled out the gates of the plant in Zwickau, Germany. After having been dispensed of, Horch started his own company under the same name which led to a fair share of trouble that came to an end as soon as Horch called for a meeting at the apartment of Franz Fikentscher to discuss the matter and come up with a new name for the company. Franz's son who was studying latin at the time was the true deliverer of the name that would later became synonymous with luxury and quality. As 'Horch' means listen in Old German, the boy simply made a switched the name with its latin corespondent, 'audi', sparking enthusiasm into the 'audience' that quickly adopted the name.

Audi's start o the German market was high lighted by the appearance of 2.6 liter engine powered vehicles followed by a series of more powerful ones, such as 4.7 L and the gas-gulping 5.7 L. Having gotten to see his company grow wings, Horch left in in 1920, four years before Audi's first 6 cylinder model was built. In 19128, Audi was acquired By Jorgen Rasmussen, owner of rival company DKW.

A few years later, a merger between Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer occurred and thus, the Auto Union was formed in 1932. Those times called for a new badge and the four interlocked rings were born as a sign of unity and identity of the newly formed auto-conglomerate. Technological improvement became a top priority that first took shape during the Second World War when an armored car was produced for the German Army.

However, all the progress would soon be severely slowed down and even halted at times due to heavy bombings. Moreover, as as soon as the conflict had come to an end, Zwickau had been caught in the soviet occupation zone that would become The German Democratic Republic in 1949. Not only that the company's activity was in jeopardy but the Auto Union had also broken up and the Union had to be restarted n new grounds, in Ingolstadt, Bavaria.

Though sluggish at first, the newly Ingolstadt based factory would attract many of the former workers and the construction of two-stroke engines would be resumed in a way similar to that of Zwickau. By 1958, Daimler-Benz had already acquired a whopping 87% of the Auto Union but its investment quickly became property of Volkswagen, the company having bought the factory and  and the brands in 1964.

Soon after the change of ownership, two-stroke engines would be eliminated in favor of the more popular and more customer appealing four-stroke ones. DKW, the leading brand of the Union at the time failed as a brand despite of the changes  it had made and Volkswagen decided to resurrect Audi. The former DKW built model was rebranded as an Audi one and was the springboard for the make of later models such as the 60, 75 and 80.

After a second merger with the Stuttgart based car-producer NSU by 1970, Audi established itself as a reliable growing brand that would later break the German boundaries and expand to new markets, including the North American one where it encountered difficulties following the release of a biased report that portrayed the car as suffering form 'unintended acceleration'. This was caused by the close placement of the brake and acceleration pedals, right next to each other. Shortly after the report was released , an abrupt decline in sales was registered that was countered only years later with the 1996 release of the A4 model.

Joining a row of successful car-producers, Audi has also garnered acclaim on the racing track with several World Record holdings, including one for Top Speed Endurance. Audi is currently enjoying a privileged position and large market share and is predicted to reach the production threshold of 1 million units by the end of this year.
