The 2016 Lincoln MKS covers all the luxury sedan basics and costs less than many competitors, but there are better choices out there for a large, premium-brand sedan.

With an all-new replacement waiting in the wings, the 2016 Lincoln MKS enters its final year unchanged. And in the hyper-competitive and ever-evolving world of big luxury sedans, that doesn't leave the Lincoln flagship in a very strong position.

Of course, that isn't to say that this dressed-up version of the Ford Taurus doesn't have its upsides. A turbocharged V6 engine with 365 hp and standard all-wheel drive is optional. The standard V6 uses front-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive is optional there, too. There's also an aesthetically pleasing — if somewhat tricky to use — touch-sensitive electronics interface, a roomy backseat and a huge trunk.

On a long road trip, the MKS's quiet passenger cabin is a relaxing place to roll away the miles. That said, the ride quality isn't quite as refined as its competitors. Likewise, several rivals feel more solid and well-planted on a winding stretch of road.

As we alluded to earlier, the MKS has no shortage of desirable competitors. European models like the 2016 Audi A6, the 2016 BMW 5 Series and the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class are more expensive and more refined. For a more apples-to-apples comparison, we suggest having a look at comparably priced models like the 2016 Acura RLX, 2016 Cadillac CTS, 2016 Chrysler 300, 2016 Hyundai Genesis and 2016 Lexus ES 350 sedans. Each has their own strengths, but they tend to make the MKS look and feel dated in terms of overall performance and features.

The 2016 Lincoln MKS sedan comes in two trim levels: MKS and MKS EcoBoost.

The base MKS model comes with standard 19-inch alloy wheels, driver-adjustable suspension dampers, rear parking sensors, adaptive xenon headlights, automatic high beams, foglights, remote start, keyless entry and ignition, exterior keypad entry and heated mirrors with driver-side auto-dimming.

Inside, you'll find dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated eight-way power front seats (with driver memory settings and four-way lumbar adjustment), a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and a rearview camera. Additional features include Lincoln's Sync voice control, the MyLincoln Touch touchscreen electronics interface, a mobile WiFi hotspot, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity and a 10-speaker sound system with a CD player, satellite radio and a USB/iPod interface.

The MKS EcoBoost is similarly equipped but comes with a more powerful turbocharged V6 engine, standard all-wheel drive (optional on base models) and 20-inch wheels.

There are several options packages starting with the Elite package (Equipment Group 101A/201A), which includes blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning systems, front multicontour seats with a massage feature, power-adjustable pedals, a power rear sunshade, wood interior accents, a navigation system and a premium 16-speaker surround-sound audio system with HD radio and Sirius/XM Travel Link services. Models equipped with the Elite package can also add the Cold Weather package (heated steering wheel and heated rear seats) and the Technology package, which features adaptive cruise control, a frontal collision warning system, lane-keeping assist and an automated parallel-parking system.

The only major stand-alone options are 20-inch wheels (for the base MKS) and a dual-panel sunroof.

The 2016 Lincoln MKS base model gets a 3.7-liter V6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and a choice of front- or all-wheel drive. This engine generates 305 hp and 280 pound-feet of torque. The EPA-estimated fuel economy for front-wheel-drive models is 22 mpg in combined driving (19 city/28 highway). That number drops to 21 mpg combined (18 city/26 highway) with all-wheel-drive.

The EcoBoost model is only offered with all-wheel drive and is propelled by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter that develops 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy is rated at 20 mpg in combined driving (17 city/25 highway). In testing, a Lincoln MKS EcoBoost dashed from zero to 60 mph in just 5.8 seconds.

The 2016 Lincoln MKS comes standard with antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags, a rearview camera and rear parking sensors. Also standard is a MyKey feature that allows owners to set certain driving parameters for teen drivers. Sync also offers an emergency crash notification service that automatically dials 911 in the event of an airbag deployment.

Safety-related options include adaptive cruise control combined with a frontal collision warning with brake support (it primes the brake system to reduce braking distances in a potential panic stop), along with blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning systems and lane-keeping assist.

In government crash tests, the MKS earned a top five-star rating for overall performance, with five out of five stars for overall frontal-impact protection and five stars for side-impact protection. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing, the MKS earned a top rating of "Good" for its safety in moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof strength testing, but a "Poor" rating in the latest IIHS small-overlap frontal crash test.

The 2016 Lincoln MKS drives like the big luxury car it is. It's quiet and composed at highway speeds, but it doesn't have the solid feel of its competitors. Much the same can be said for the car's handling, which inspires confidence everywhere but tight, twisty back roads.

The standard 3.7-liter V6 engine feels smooth and capable, though it needs every one of its 305 horses to move this heavy car. Even so, we think this base engine should serve most buyers well. For those who feel the need for maximum thrust, the optional turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 all-wheel-drive EcoBoost model should fill the bill quite nicely. Buyers simply looking for all-weather peace of mind without the EcoBoost's steep price tag would do well to consider the base engine with all-wheel drive.

The 2016 Lincoln MKS has a classy passenger cabin done up in high-quality materials that accentuate the sleek design. There's optional wood and metal trim, while the standard setup has a notable lack of the buttons and knobs found on so many luxury models.

This simplified look is achieved with a variety of touch-sensitive switches. The downside is that the sliders used for audio and climate controls and the center-mounted touchscreen interface can be both difficult to see while driving and slow to respond to inputs.

Be that as it may, the MKS interior's best feature is its roominess. There's plenty of headroom and legroom all around, though the thick roof pillars, wide center console and small glass area make the front seats seem less spacious than they are. The rear seat is mounted high enough to allow adult occupants to achieve a natural sitting position, while large rear doors make for easy entry and exit. This size benefit continues out back, with a huge 19.2-cubic-foot trunk that's big enough to accommodate the luggage of a car full of individuals who don't understand the meaning of the phrase "packing light."

With 304 horsepower from the standard 3.7-liter V6 engine, the 2016 Lincoln MKS delivers smooth power through a 6-speed automatic transmission, having no problem pulling this big 4-door with authority while still managing decent fuel economy. It's quiet and comfortable, as you'd expect of this big sedan. But if you want more zip from your big Lincoln, step up to the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 and its additional 61 horsepower. With nearly V8 levels of acceleration, the EcoBoost gives this big sedan a real kick in the pants, and has no problem getting it to the ground thanks to standard all-wheel drive. If you want the best cornering and emergency response, but still want a comfortable ride, be sure to opt for the adaptive suspension system. Nobody will mistake this big Lincoln for a sports sedan, but its precise steering and firm brakes make it more fun than a Lexus ES.

ACTIVE PARK ASSIST The MKS is a big car, and if the thought of parallel parking such a large vehicle gives you performance anxiety, then you'll want the Active Park Assist system. It uses the parking sensors to measure an available parking space, then does the bulk of the work to park the car.STANDARD CLIMATE-CONTROLLED SEATS If you live where temperatures swing to the extremes, you're going to love the 2016 Lincoln MKS and its standard heated and cooled front seats. Rear passengers get heated seats, also standard.

The touch-sensitive controls on the dash of the 2016 Lincoln MKS are a mixed bag, with their uncluttered appearance coming at the expense of being fiddly to use. Once you climb the learning curve, it's easy to adjust your climate settings, find your favorite radio stations, and get comfortable. Primary controls for the audio system, plus cruise control, are on the steering wheel, and the LCD screens on either side of the speedometer help keep your focus on the road ahead. The front seats come standard with heating and cooling, and are covered in luxurious Bridge of Weir leather.

A big luxury sedan needs a big luxury grille, and they don't get much bigger than that on the 2016 Lincoln MKS. It's a daring design statement on a car that's otherwise noteworthy for its tame but attractive design. The MKS looks a lot like the Ford Taurus in profile though, despite design details like the HID headlights, contoured hood, and the lip on the trunklid. Still, the twin tailpipes help give the MKS a feeling of power, and we're fond of the 19-inch wheels on EcoBoost versions, and the blackout appearance package that includes 20-inch wheels and darkened grille and headlights.

You get a lot of standard equipment with the 2016 Lincoln MKS, as you'd expect from a premium sedan, such as the Sync connectivity and communication system, adaptive HID headlights, 12-way-power front seats, leather seating surfaces with front-seat heating and cooling, automatic high beams and automatic climate control. There's even the SecuriCode keyless-entry keypad, which Lincoln swears its customers love. For a taste of sportiness, push-button start and 19-inch cast aluminum wheels also come standard. On the safety front, blind-spot monitors, rearview camera and Lincoln’s Forward and Reverse Sensing system are also standard.

Primary among the many options for the 2016 Lincoln MKS is the 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 engine, along with its standard all-wheel drive. Beyond that there's Active Park Assist, a navigation system, heated rear seats, 20-inch wheels, and HD Radio. Also available is a remote-start system, a power rear sunshade, a heated steering wheel, power-adjustable pedals, multi-contour massaging front seats, THX II Certified Audio with 16 speakers and a 10-inch subwoofer, and a dual-panel moonroof. Advanced driver-assist technology is also available in the form of adaptive cruise control, and Lane Keep Assist and Alert.

The standard Lincoln MKS engine is a 3.7-liter V6 that puts out 304 horsepower and 279 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels (FWD), or if you like, to all four wheels (AWD). If you think your luxury sedan should move out a little faster, you'll want to upgrade to the EcoBoost twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 which sends its 365 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels. Despite its increased power output, the EcoBoost has about the same fuel economy as the AWD 3.7-liter engine, making it a bit of a no-brainer if you’re looking to upgrade to all-wheel drive anyhow. Both engines can run on regular unleaded gasoline, and both are teamed to a SelectShift 6-speed automatic with manual-shift control.3.7-liter V6 304 horsepower @ 6,500 rpm 279 lb-ft of torque @ 4,050 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 19/28 mpg (FWD), 18/26 mpg (AWD) 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 (EcoBoost) 365 horsepower @ 5,500 rpm 350 lb-ft of torque @ 1,500-5,000 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/25 mpg

The base 2016 Lincoln MKS Premiere model, with the 3.7-liter V6 engine and FWD, has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) just under $ 40,000, including the $ 925 destination charge. The MKS Elite is about $ 43,000, and AWD adds about $ 2,000. However, that's about the same price as the $ 46,700 EcoBoost Premiere, which comes with most of the non-turbo Elite's equipment. A loaded MKS EcoBoost will come in a little north of $ 50,000. That's less than the Cadillac XTS and Acura RLX, but more than the Chrysler 300C and Hyundai Genesis. Because this is the last year for the MKS, there will likely be good deals on this car to make room for the 2017 Lincoln Continental. Check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area paid for their MKS, but remember that the MKS doesn't hold its value like its German and Japanese competitors.

Lincoln MKS Overview and History

The 2013 Lincoln MKS has better handling, improved fuel efficiency, increased power, more equipment for the base model and also new technologies to help drivers avoid accidents (like the lane keeping system, auto high-beam headlamps, collision warning and blind spot information system).
Lincoln sprung as an independent luxury-car producer in 1917. Founded by engineering whiz Henry M. Leland after his departure from Cadillac, which he had helped co-found, the company was named Lincoln as a reminder of the admiration Leland bore for the now defunct state-leader. In a macabre coincidence, president JFK was assassinated just like Abraham Lincoln was. At the time of  his death, JFK was being driven in a Lincoln Continental limousine.

However, before such drama occurred, Lincoln was a fairly small company that supplied Liberty aircraft engines for the Army during WWI. Having teamed up with son Wilfred, Leland converted his factory to manufacturing luxury automobiles right after the war. Despite Leland's skill and potential of his vehicles, the factory encountered several design-related obstacles and financial trouble that could not be overcome. Forced into bankruptcy, Leland sold his company to Ford in 1922 for $ 8 million.

Soon after the Ford takeover, Lincoln's first series of automobiles would enter mass production. Under Ford, Lincoln's styling problems were solved as were the financial issues  experimented before. Little changes or none were made to Leland's original engines. Coupled with production cost cuts, this would allow the company to toll out some 5,500 vehicles in December, 1922.

As of 1923, newer body styles appeared, many of them having been the result of partnerships with coachbuilders such as Fleetwood and Brunn. This lead to the appearance of  a diversified range of vehicles comprised of large sedans and limousines that could accommodate as many as 7 passengers. Despite the fairly big price tags these special coach-built vehicles came with, Lincoln sales did not plummet. They did just the contrary, registering a spectacular 45% increase over the previous years with 7,875 vehicles sold.

The 1924's brought forth the release of the famous Flyers that were extensively used by US Police Departments. The cars premiered some features that weren't introduced on private models until 2 years after. Two wheel disc breaks, weapon racks, armored windows and Police whistles were among the many 'accessories' Flyers came equipped with.

Probably the most famous car ever made by Lincoln sprouted in 1932  Eugene T. “Bob” Gregorie's drawing board. The later release of the Zephyr in 1936 smashed open the gates for the release of the Continental. The latter was actually a modified 1938 Zephyr Coupe whom Gregorie had sectioned and added a vertical tire mount to. The car became so successful that it sold in over 5000 units until production halted in 1948.

However, the Continental would not go down for good. It was later resuscitated  through the Mark II model. By 1955, the Mark II could be purchased for a stunning $ 10,000, as much as a Rolls Royce cost those days.

Later designs, such as the Town Car and the bulky Navigator, aided Lincoln in becoming the best sold luxury car brand in the US by 1998. After a brief change of ownership between 1998 and 2002 when Lincoln belonged to the Premier Automotive Group, the company returned on Ford premises where it can still be found today.

Despite its tradition as a luxury car manufacturer and presidential limousine supplier, the company has experienced a severe setback in the last few years, having lost against Asian and European imports. This is mostly due to the lack of new models, issue that Ford hopes to solve by reinventing the brand. Lincoln's ascension is still unspooling through the release of models such the MKZ and MKX.

2016 Lincoln MKS Consumer Reviews

MKS is a hidden gem!
I was looking for something roomy, with a powerful engine (v6 or v8), a silky smooth ride, and all bells and whistles. So so glad I test drove the MKS in my car search. The press bashed this car for being too similar to the Ford Tuarus, but to me that's never been a consistently applied criticism, as journalists rate the Lexus ES 350 as a better car (it isn't) letting it off the hook despite being a glorified Toyota Avalon. The engine is from the SHO and it is bad ass. 350 ft lbs of torque that you feel the minute you push the pedal. In comfort mode it's like driving a modern reincarnation of the Town Car. In sport mode it's a large all wheel drive sports sedan. You can hear yourself breath it's so quite in the cabin and the leather is butter smooth. Just love it. Massaging seats, adjustable gas/break pedals, and dual moon roofs this car is first class.

The car has a clean set of lines with ample acceleration, but also has all the comforts required for this type of car. Extremely quiet. The turbo has no issues when needed, it's awesome.

Critics Reviews
