Cadillac's 2016 SRX is a respectable choice in the entry-level luxury crossover SUV segment, but some rivals will likely prove to be more desirable overall.

Since 2010, the current-generation Cadillac SRX has been the brand's offering for the entry-level luxury crossover SUV market. It's done well and has actually been the best-selling model in Caddy's entire lineup. But the competition hasn't been sitting still, and compared to some fresher rivals, the 2016 SRX is getting a bit long in the tooth.

The 2016 Cadillac SRX is a handsome luxury crossover SUV that seats five.

To its credit, the SRX is boldly styled and loaded with technology and luxury features, including standard 4G WiFi capability and an available "safety alert" seat that vibrates on the appropriate side when the SRX's multitude of safety monitors identify a threat coming at you from the right or left. The SRX also handles well while providing a comfortable ride, and for those who may bemoan the ongoing downsizing of the gasoline engine, the SRX is one of the few in its class that still comes standard with a V6.

On the downside, though, the SRX's interior is on the small side, with less rear headroom than you might expect. Outward visibility is a bit compromised as well, especially when backing up. The most significant fault for many potential buyers, though, is that the 2016 SRX retains the standard and somewhat sluggish CUE (Cadillac User Experience) electronics interface, while some other 2016 Cadillacs are getting an upgraded version with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for in-car smartphone integration.

Taking a 2016 Cadillac SRX for a test-drive still is a good idea if you are shopping in the small luxury crossover segment. But we also recommend looking at the 2016 Acura RDX, which also has a standard V6 but is roomier and a better value. The 2016 Volvo XC60 is a stylish, family-friendly choice as well, with a selection of powerful and fuel-efficient engines available. The Audi Q5 and BMW X3 are two other popular competitors here, offering athletic handling, classy interiors and available diesel engines. Overall, the SRX is likable enough, but we think these rival crossovers will likely prove to be more desirable overall.

The 2016 Cadillac SRX is a compact luxury crossover SUV available in four trim levels: Base, Luxury, Performance and Premium.

The base model comes equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, heated mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, leatherette (premium vinyl) upholstery, an eight-way power driver seat, a 60/40 split-folding and reclining rear seat, cruise control and a leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. The CUE electronics interface with an 8-inch display is also standard, as are OnStar, in-car WiFi (4G LTE), Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity and an eight-speaker Bose sound system with a CD player, satellite and HD radio, a USB port and an auxiliary audio jack.

The Luxury trim adds keyless ignition and entry, a blind-spot warning system, front and rear parking sensors, power-folding mirrors (driver-side auto-dimming), a rear cross-traffic alert system, a rearview camera, automatic wipers, a panoramic sunroof and a power liftgate with adjustable opening height. Inside there's leather upholstery, adjustable thigh support for the driver seat, an eight-way power passenger seat, heated front seats and steering wheel, driver memory functions, power-adjustable pedals, an enhanced climate control system, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, accent lighting, a cargo cover and a cargo management system. A voice-activated navigation system and a 10-speaker Bose surround-sound audio system are optional.

Those options come standard on the Performance trim, which also adds 20-inch alloy wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, adaptive dampers (all-wheel drive only), variable-effort power steering, adaptive xenon headlights and foglights.

There are four available trim levels for the 2016 SRX. For value, our pick is the SRX's Luxury trim.

The top-of-the-line SRX Premium adds tri-zone climate control, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and rear-seat audio controls, along with a Driver Awareness package, which includes forward-collision and lane departure warning systems, automatic high beams and a safety alert driver seat.

Optional on the Luxury, Performance and Premium trim levels is the Driver Assist package, which incorporates adaptive cruise control, automatic collision preparation and automatic braking (when your SRX identifies a potential low-speed collision situation). The Driver Awareness package is an option on the Luxury and Performance trims. A Towing package and a rear-seat entertainment system with dual seatback-mounted screens are available on all but the base model.

Every 2016 Cadillac SRX model is powered by a 3.6-liter V6 that generates 308 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic is the only transmission offered. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available for all trim levels other than Base. In testing, 0-60-mph acceleration for a front-wheel-drive SRX was 7.0 seconds, an average time for compact luxury crossovers.

The SRX's fuel economy ratings are below average, with an EPA-estimated 19 mpg combined (17 city/24 highway) for front-drive models and 18 mpg combined (16 city/23 highway) with AWD. Properly equipped, the SRX can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

The 2016 Cadillac SRX comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags and side curtain airbags. The OnStar system includes automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, remote door unlocking, stolen vehicle assistance and turn-by-turn navigation. Front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts are included starting on the Luxury trim level.

The optional Driver Awareness package (standard on the SRX Premium) adds forward collision alert, lane departure warning and the safety alert driver seat. The latter vibrates on the left or right side of the seat bottom, based on the direction from which a potential hazard looms. The optional Driver Assist package features automatic collision preparation and braking, in reverse as well as when going forward.

In brake testing, a front-drive SRX Performance came to a stop from 60 mph in 120 feet, which is a good number in this class.

In government crash tests, the SRX received five (out of five) stars for overall crash protection, with four stars for total frontal impact protection and five stars for total side-impact protection. In crash testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the SRX received the top rating of "Good" in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset impact test, as well as a "Good" score for the side-impact, roof-strength and seat/head restraint (whiplash protection) tests. The IIHS also rated the SRX's optional frontal collision warning and mitigation systems collectively as "Superior."

The 3.6-liter V6 moves the 2016 Cadillac SRX with assurance in most situations, though acceleration is better described as satisfying rather than exhilarating. The six-speed automatic transmission changes gears in a smooth, unobtrusive manner. Occasionally, it's a little slow to downshift during highway passing maneuvers, however.

You're likely to be surprised by the crispness of the SRX's handling, coupled with this crossover SUV's comfortable ride. If you regularly seek out back roads, we'd recommend an all-wheel-drive Performance or Premium version, as they feature quicker, sportier steering and an adaptive suspension that together give it an extra measure of capability around turns.

The SRX's interior trim has a high-quality look and feel, and everything is nicely put together for the most part. We wish some of the wood accents didn't look quite so polished, but the overall impression is an excellent blend of technology-meets-luxury.

The SRX has a classy cabin with loads of luxury touches, but its central CUE infotainment interface can be hard to use.

One of the centerpieces of the SRX's interior is the CUE infotainment interface. While we find it visually pleasing, operating the system can be a source of frustration. Reactions to inputs via the touchscreen or physical buttons can be slow or sometimes missed altogether. Also, the slide-bar volume adjustment is far more difficult to use than a conventional knob. Perhaps worst of all, the screen's menu structure is unintuitive. In general, we prefer most other electronics interfaces in this segment.

The Cadillac SRX offers ample room for four adults, although rear headroom is snug, especially in models with the panoramic sunroof. Cargo room is average for the class: 30 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 61 cubic feet with both sections of the 60/40-split rear seatbacks folded down.

Our 2016 Cadillac SRX test drive included equal time on winding back roads and long freeway expanses, and we found both equally suited to the SRX’s abilities. Though it tips the scales at nearly 4,300 pounds the SRX doesn’t feel ponderous or bloated, delivering good onramp acceleration and agile handling in tight corners. Even more notable is the SRX’s ride, which is devoid of the abruptness sometimes experienced with more enthusiast-oriented SUVs. If we had to pick, we’d say the SRX rides more softly than a BMW X3 or Acura RDX, but its handling falls more in line with the Audi Q5 and Lincoln MKX. The SRX’s 308-horsepower V6 never feels taxed, but its rather lackluster fuel-economy figures leave something to be desired. To help mitigate frequent fill-ups, Cadillac equips the SRX with 21-gallon fuel tank.

AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKINGThe SRX’s automatic emergency braking setup can detect an impending low-speed collision and warn the driver. Should the driver fail to respond in time, the system will intervene and bring the car to a complete stop.BOSE SILENCE AND SOUNDCadillac’s SRX luxury SUV for 2016 includes a marvelous Bose audio system with Active Noise Cancellation. This system quiets the cabin by using opposing sound waves to cancel out intrusive road and wind noise.

The 2016 Cadillac SRX's cabin is thoroughly modern, and then some. Although we applaud the cutting-edge CUE infotainment setup and its touch-sensitive 8-inch display, the system requires a steep learning curve to operate when driving. The SRX’s front seats are roomy, though the 3-passenger rear seat can be tight for taller adults. Behind the folding and reclining rear seat is about 30 cubic feet of cargo space. That's less than a smaller SUV like the Honda CR-V, but ample for all but the biggest shopping splurges. The UltraView sunroof does a good job giving the cabin an airy feel.

“Athletic” and “attractive” are just two ways to describe Cadillac's crossover SUV. The SRX's sense of style is highlighted by angular sheet metal and a stylish – but visibility-hampering – sloped roof. Prominent creases rise along the sides from just aft the front wheels to below the rear windows, conveying a sense of momentum. The power liftgate – standard on all but base models – is an arm-saver. Twin tailpipes and large, 18- or 20-inch wheels round out a package well-suited for a young executive.

In base form, Cadillac’s 2016 SRX luxury-crossover SUV includes an 8-speaker Bose sound system with dual USB inputs and Bluetooth streaming, and dual-zone auto climate control. Leatherette is the upholstery in base models. Stepping up to the Luxury trim adds a few thousand to the price, but brings real leather, a panoramic sunroof, a power liftgate, a rearview camera, keyless access and blind-spot monitoring, which is a big help on crowded roads. The top-end Premium trim adds 10-speaker Bose audio, navigation, a ventilated driver's seat to keep you cool, and safety features like lane-departure warning.

All-wheel drive can be had on all but base models of the 2016 Cadillac SRX luxury-crossover SUV. Other options vary by trim. Among them are the Driver Assist Package that includes the automatic braking feature and adaptive cruise control. Other features of note include a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system with wireless headphones, Safety Seat Alert (it alerts the driver to a potential collision by vibrating the seat), and a pet cargo partition to accommodate Fido.

The 2016 SRX employs a direct-injection 3.6-liter V6 good for 308 horsepower, a figure that bests most rivals. Better yet, the SRX does not require premium gasoline, and the driver-selectable Eco mode is said to slightly improve efficiency by changing transmission shift points. All Cadillac SRX models employ a 6-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is the SRX's standard format, with all-wheel drive (AWD) optional. Towing capacity is 3,500 pounds. The SRX's powertrain warranty runs six years or 70,000 miles. Another nice perk is Cadillac's standard Premium Care Maintenance program, which covers services such as oil changes for four years or 50,000 miles.3.6-liter V6308 horsepower @ 6,800 rpm265 lb-ft of torque at 2,400 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/24 mpg (FWD), 16/23 mpg (AWD)

The 2016 Cadillac SRX has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting at $ 38,600 and can reach over $ 50,000 for a loaded model. The SRX's base price slightly undercuts the starting prices of the BMX X3, Lexus RX and Lincoln MKX, and is above those of the Acura RDX, Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60. Before buying, be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are actually paying for their SRX. Over the long run, we expect the Cadillac to hold its value well, but to still trail the Audi Q5 and Lexus RX in residual value.

Cadillac SRX Overview and History

The 2009 Geneva Auto Show witnessed the unveiling of the new Cadillac SRX, a more-efficient midsize luxury crossover in the automaker's range. Based on GM's acclaimed Sigma architecture and available in rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD), SRX is designed to deliver superior driving dynamics.
Cadillac's history can be traced back to the beginning of the 18th century. Although coaches, horse riding or walking were the favorite means of locomotion during those times and no cars had been yet made, it's important to trace the brand to its origins. The genesis of Cadillac as it is widely known today began in 1701, when a group of French explorers led by Le Sieur Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac traveled to the northern parts of the US and established Ville d'Etroit. The settling would ultimately come to be known as Detroit, a flourishing industrial city, teeming with car plants and foundries.

However, Sir Cadillac would not have any connection to the future of the Cadillac car workshops. Its actual beginnings can be traced to the mid 19th century, when a boy named Henry Martyn Leland was born. Leland grew up on a farm near Barton, Vermont, where he received a solid working-education that taught him the importance of doing a job properly, regardless of its importance.

The farm-training he received, combined with his penchant for improving working methods, led to his growth as an engineer. However, Cadillac would not yet emerge as an automobile brand. By 1890, Leland had founded his own company in partnership with Robert C. Faulconer and Norton, after having convinced the former of the city's need for machine shops. The company's area of expertise was gear grinding and the development of special tools.

Soon after the company received general credit for the quality of the products it marketed and Leland had asserted himself as a talented engineer, the shift from steam-powered vehicles to gasoline-powered ones was made. Following the work of the visionary Daimler and Benz in Europe, a man named Ransom Eli Olds from Michigan teamed up with a group of investors under a firm called Olds Gasoline Engine Works. Their main objective was to  build a gasoline-powered engine to be fitted on the chassis of a vehicle.

The project was a success but the resulting product was flawed: the gears in the transmission were too loud. Olds turned to Leland and Faulconer for help. The two entered a straight competition against the Dodge brothers who were also supplying engines for Olds. Although Leland's ultimately developed 10.25 Hp engine was better than that of Dodge, Olds turned it down due to the high car sales his company registered at the time. Basically, there was no need for a new engine.

Still, Leland's engine would soon come to use. Shortly after Olds' refusal of using the newly designed engine, Leland was looked up by two men concerning the liquidation of a company that had previously built cars. Its name was the Detroit Automobile Company and had been initially reorganized by Henry Ford, who left shortly after the company began crumbling again. Leland persuaded the investors to stay in business, convincing them of the utility and importance of the automobile industry in the near future.

With an engine already designed, Leland and Faulconer were brought in and the company adopted the name of Cadillac, that of the explorer that had founded the city over two centuries ago. The Cadillac coat of arms was adopted as the company's new logo and the baby-firm would still receive international recognition for its automobiles.

Leland's engines had already garnered appreciation and were some of the most accurately built units of the time. In fact, not only the engines were reliable and built with pinpoint precision, but they were also highly versatile, successfully catering for the need of interchangeability. This feature has earned Cadillac the Dewer Trophy, being the first time when such an award was handed to an American automobile manufacturer.

Later on, Cadillac would be part of a larger entity, the General Motors company, then run by William Crapo Durant - who paid $ 4.5M in cash for Leland's company to merge with GM. From that point on, several models would be developed and enter production by Leland's departure in 1917.

The Brougham, Fleetwood, Deville and the Eldorado are some of the most famous models build by the GM's prodigious branch. Its accomplishments vary from speed breaking records on American territory to engineering improvements that were a premiere for the automotive world. For example, Cadillac introduced the revolutionary electrical lighting and ignition Delco system as standard equipment on their cars, as well as boasting the world's first independent front suspension on its entire line of automobiles in 1934.

Closed cooling systems, electronic injection systems and catalytic converters are also among the long list of first-to-have-done things introduced by Cadillac in the US. Despite the low reception of the brand in Europe, Cadillac remains one of the great classics overseas, still boasting a privileged status among American car producers. After all, it's a brand deeply rooted in nobility grounds.

Broke down mountain
Within 2 days of lease, after having driven 517 miles, the vehicle suffered a severe internal transmission failure. The transmission was rebuilt and failed a second time. We told both the dealership and G.M., we did not want the car back. They refused a buyback!

Nothing out there compares to a Caddy
Unbelievable the reliability, and the comfort is what you would expect from a cadillac...like riding high in a truck, can pull like a truck, and load and haul like a truck..buts the ride is all cadillac!! Love all the safety features..the interface within the computer system "HUE" many have complained about it not being user friendly and sometimes awkward,,,just another device you soon learn to use and how it works for you..after that its a champ!! Love everything about the SRX! comparing to new XT5 hands down like the looks of the SRX better inside and out...the only thing I say the new XT5 improved with is the rear window wiper being hidden under the spoiler...which I am sure if it bothers me enough I could get one for my 2016 SRX. I fell in love with my 2016 within the first 20miles I drove it! It was like AHHH finally I am home... I come up with reasons to drive...LOVE IT LOVE IT!!

Luxury 4dr SUV AWD (3.6L 6cyl 6A)
Luxury automobile
I've owned this 2016 Cadillac SRX for one week and it's stopped running while my wife was 150 miles away from home. I spent upwards of 40k for a car that malfunctioned with less than 300 miles on it. I don't know what the dealership (Barton Birks Chevrolet in Newburgh NY ) did to prep this car for delivery but obviously something got missed? This is not the outcome I expected after trading in a Honda CRV that never needed anything other than oil changes and tires. The dealership where the car was towed advised that the code read "throttle body assembly". This car just came out of the factory!!! I bought a new car so I could trust that when my family was away from home that the car we bought would keep them safe. Perhaps this is why they push the extended warranty at purchase. Update: 5000 miles, no problems since last mishap. Dealer extended warranty. Happy.

Scatty Caddie!
Simple what you should know is the big guys got this one wrong! This is amazing car. Gas mileage is a little lean but should not be buying factor if you can afford this car anyway. I drove x5 and the Audi and Range Rover here is what made me choose the SRX. Four of my best friends are in the car business owners and buyers all four said the Cadillac will out last the aforementioned cars, give me less headache, and will not require a speciality dealership to work on it. That sealed the deal for me! Buy American buy Cadillac.

2012 Cadillac SRX
"WHAT A RIDE!"
I have enjoyed my Cadillac SRX since 2012. However, it has been the most uncomfortable ride I have ever had...the seats are hard as a brick! We have had to put cushions on them for people who ride with us. Even they comment on how hard the seats are. Also, don't run out of gas because if you do you will get hit from behind!! Thank God I was able to fight the steering wheel and get over enough to not let that happen! When you run out of gas in this car it stops cold Turkey!!!

2011 Cadillac SRX
"Nice car"
Nice body, the issue is 2011 SRX has POOR headlighting. The recall expired in 2015, so anyone buying this vehicle after 2015, you have to spend $ 1600 to have the proper headlamps installed. In my opinion, Cadillac should do right by all owners.

2013 Cadillac SRX
"Beware"
I loved this SUV until my touch screen went out. I started looking online and realized this is a common issue and probably should be a recall. Maybe it is why Cadillac changed the name of the car. I called to get a price to get it fixed and the mechanic said he wasn't surprised and he could quote me a price without even looking it up because it was so common. Beware....there is a good chance you will have problems with the touch screen.
