The 2015 Jaguar F-Type is a thrilling blend of style, performance and luxury. It may not be as sharp around a racetrack as some other sports cars, but any F-Type you choose will certainly turn heads.

Whether you're looking at the convertible or the newly introduced coupe, the 2015 Jaguar F-Type is one of the most evocative shapes on the road today. By utilizing a few styling cues from Jaguar's history, the F-Type evokes a bit of nostalgia (and perhaps a heap of sex appeal) with its handsome design. But the F-Type has much more going for it than just good looks.

That appeal starts with what lies under the hood. If you're looking for a stylish sports car, and you don't want to take out a second mortgage to get one, the affordable base F-Type and its 340-hp V6 provides entirely respectable performance. At the other end of the range, the V8 S roadster and the R coupe provide warp-speed acceleration and a tuned exhaust note that you'll swear came straight from NASCAR.

No matter which F-Type version you choose, you'll get a cabin that's exquisitely upholstered and trimmed with very high-quality materials. There are plenty of sporty touches like the contrasting stitching, the hip-hugging seats and the optional flat-bottom steering wheel, but they don't get in the way of the luxurious interior vibe. Unfortunately, the F-Type's infotainment system is a letdown. It doesn't offer many smartphone connectivity features that some rivals have, and it can be slow to respond to your inputs.

Another drawback also relates to the more mundane aspects of car ownership. There's no question that the F-Type can power through turns with impressive agility, but the resulting suspension tuning that Jag employs to get it is pretty stiff. Of course, stiff is sort of par for the course in this class, but we've found the Jag to be a bit too stiff when driving on poorly maintained city streets, especially if it's fitted with the optional 20-inch wheels. Combine this with the rather firm sport seats and the daily commute in an F-Type may not be as comfortable as you'd hope for.

Eh, but are you really going to care about a rough ride or a fiddly touchscreen when you can drive a car that looks this good and will have you grinning like a fool every time you start it up? Exactly. The 2015 F-Type is sensational and good enough to earn an "A" rating. Sure, there are other "A"s in this class, too. Cars like the 2015 BMW M4 and the 2015 Porsche Cayman (or Boxster) offer a similarly awesome driving experience but are priced a bit less. And no "What luxury sports car should I buy?" discussion would be complete without the 2015 Porsche 911 or the new 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. But after our year-long test of a 2015 Jaguar F-Type R Coupe, we're absolutely sure that this is one of our favorite sports cars on the road today.

The 2015 Jaguar F-Type is a two-seat sports car available as a fabric-top roadster or a hardtop coupe. The convertible is available in base, S and V8 S trims, while the coupe is available in base, S and R trims.

Standard features on the base trims include 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic bi-xenon headlights, LED running lights, headlight washers, rain-sensing wipers, a deployable rear spoiler, heated side mirrors, full power accessories, cruise control, automatic climate control, leather and suede upholstery, six-way power-adjustable seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, single-color interior ambient lighting, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering column, Bluetooth connectivity, an 8-inch touchscreen display, navigation and a 10-speaker audio system with a CD player, auxiliary audio jack and iPod integration.

Upgrading to the F-Type S will get you a more powerful engine, 19-inch wheels, an adaptive suspension system, larger performance brakes, a mechanical limited-slip differential, an active sport exhaust, power-folding mirrors, gloss black exterior accents, keyless ignition and entry and color-configurable ambient lighting.

The F-Type V8 S (convertible only) features a powerful V8 engine, 20-inch wheels, high-performance brakes, an electronic active differential, auto-dimming mirrors, rear parking sensors, dual-zone automatic climate control, full leather upholstery, 12-way adjustable power seats (with power lumbar) and driver-seat memory functions.

At the top of the range, the F-Type R (coupe only) adds a more powerful version of the supercharged V8 engine, red brake calipers, an electronic active differential with torque vectoring, selectable dynamic driving modes (controls throttle, steering and transmission responses), faux-carbon interior accents, heated seats, metal pedals, a flat-bottom heated steering wheel and an upgraded 12-speaker Meridian sound system with HD and satellite radio. Most of the R's standard items are available on lower trim levels in packages or as stand-alone options.

For the base F-Type and the F-Type S, bundled options include the Premium 1 and 2 packages, respectively, which add the auto-dimming side mirrors, 12-way power seats, dual-zone climate control, a wind deflector, heated seats and a heated steering wheel. The Premium 3 package for the V8 S adds the above features that aren't already standard. The Vision pack (which requires the Premium pack on base, S and V8 S models) adds adaptive headlights, automatic high beams, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic detection.

The Performance packages for the S and V8 S add customizable dynamic modes, high-performance brakes, selectable sport exhaust, a sport steering wheel, sport seats and unique interior treatments. High-performance carbon-ceramic brakes are also available on all but the base models.

The base 2015 Jaguar F-Type is powered by a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine that produces 340 hp and 332 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic sends that power to the rear wheels and is standard across the F-Type lineup. Jaguar estimates the base F-Type will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds. For fuel economy, the EPA estimates the base F-Type will return 23 mpg combined (20 city/28 highway).

Choose the F-Type S and the V6 engine's power output increases to 380 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque. In testing, a V6 S coupe went from zero to 60 mph in 5.0 seconds, which is a respectable time but still slower than six-cylinder-powered rivals by about half a second. The F-Type S is rated by the EPA at 22 mpg combined (19/27).

The 2015 Jaguar F-Type V8 S (convertible only) receives a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 that cranks out 495 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. During testing, the V8 S went from zero to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. The F-Type R coupe uses the same supercharged V8 but gets a power boost to 550 hp and 502 lb-ft of torque. In testing, the R coupe went from zero to 60 in 3.8 seconds. Both the V8 S and the R coupe are rated by the EPA to return 18 mpg combined (16/23).

Standard safety features on the 2015 Jaguar F-Types include antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, seat-mounted side airbags and rollover protection bars (convertible only). Rear parking sensors are standard on the V8 S and R models and available on supporting trims.

Front parking sensors, a rearview camera, a blind-spot monitor and a rear cross-traffic warning system can also be added to all trims.

During testing, an F-Type V8 S convertible came to a stop from 60 mph in an impressive 105 feet. An F-Type R Coupe took just 106 feet, while an F-Type S equipped with the Performance pack took longer at 115 feet.

The 2015 Jaguar F-Type delivers the goods, whether you're looking for stunning acceleration or entertaining handling. All models in the range perform on a very high level, though the V6 models feel marginally more responsive in the handling department than the heavier V8 S roadster or the R coupe. At speed on the highway, the F-Type is quiet and mostly comfortable, but on broken pavement the firm suspension has trouble soaking up rougher road imperfections. It's especially noticeable on cars with the 19- and 20-inch wheels.

If you're looking for ultimate straight-line performance, the V8 S and the R coupe are both lightning-fast and their active exhaust produces the best symphony that an internal combustion engine could offer. Yet, when you're driving with restraint in traffic, the mechanical soundtrack quiets to very normal levels. Serious enthusiasts might be put off by the fact that the F-Type only comes with an automatic transmission, but this eight-speed is impressive nonetheless. It shifts as quickly as many of the automated manual transmissions in competitors, executing smooth gearchanges in everyday driving situations and quick rev-matching downshifts when you're driving with a bit more enthusiasm.

On the whole, the F-Type is every bit as satisfying to drive as its evocative styling suggests. It might not measure up to the venerable Porsche 911 in every test of performance, but when it comes to satisfying the emotional side of driving, the 2015 Jaguar F-Type is one of the best sports cars available today.

Slide into the F-Type's driver seat and there's no mistaking it for anything but a sports car. Even in base trim, there are plenty of cues telling you that this car means business, with racy stitching, well-bolstered seats and a beefy passenger grab handle on the center console. It's still a Jaguar, though, which means top-notch materials. Such finishing touches as central air vents that rise from the dash and "Ignis" orange start button and shift paddles (for S and R models) further increase the cool factor.

At highway speeds in the convertible, top-down motoring is calm, with buffeting kept to acceptable levels. And if the weather takes a bad turn, the top can be deployed in only 12 seconds while moving at speeds up to 30 mph. The coupe provides a slightly more confined feeling inside, making it seem more like a cockpit from the driver seat. Luckily, the optional panoramic sunroof offers some extra headroom and a much airier feel from the inside.

Whether you're in the coupe or the convertible, trunk size is notably limited. The convertible provides just 7 cubic feet of space, while the coupe offers a more usable 11 cubes. Medium-size suitcases will be a tight squeeze, and the oddly shaped space and awkward liftover further complicate cargo loading.

The 2015 Jaguar F-Type Coupe removes any doubt that Jaguar was serious about its new sports car. Not that that we had any, really. The convertible already offers fast, faster, or fastest versions, with supercharged engines ranging from a 340-horsepower or 380-horsepower V6 to a 495-horsepower V8. The coupe offers the same two V6 engines, but the V8 R is reserved for the most power hungry. With a full 550-horsepower on tap, Jaguar says it rockets to 60 mph in four seconds flat, with a top speed of 186 mph. Taming that horsepower are a variety of electronic aids, such as an active rear differential and variable-effort steering, that enhance the sports car experience. Considering the tremendous velocities the F-Type is capable of, the optional carbon-ceramic matrix brakes are a godsend, delivering sure, strong stops from high speeds, time after time, without even a hint of fade.

5.0-LITER SUPERCHARGED V8 ENGINEWhile we love the sophistication and sport, it's what's underhood that really counts in this sports car. The 5.0-liter supercharged V8 puts out 495 horsepower in the convertible and a stunning 550 horsepower in the coupe, all with a velvety smoothness that belies its prodigious power.ACTIVE EXHAUST SYSTEMPress the button on the center console with the exhaust pipe icon (or put the F-Type into Dynamic Mode) and you'll turn on the Active Exhaust system. You'll not only hear the exhaust better when accelerating, but the pop and burble you get when decelerating is glorious, antisocial fun.

The driver-focused cockpit of the 2015 Jaguar F-Type separates the passenger and driver with a wide console, and provides a left-hand grip for the passenger. The coupe's high roof means good headroom even for tall drivers, and there's adequate legroom, too. Drivers get a large, visually sharper TFT display between the two gauges, with orange paddle shifters, a start button, and Dynamic Mode selector on some models. The infotainment touch screen's simple interface conveys what you want to know, albeit without much flair. The beautifully assembled interior boasts stitched leather throughout, including the headliner in coupes.

Rather than aping the 50-year-old lines of the E-Type, Jaguar's design team crafted a new, modern shape that's still unique to the brand. The coupe's sloping roof and narrow rear glass give it a wider look from behind, even though it's the same dimensions as the convertible. Both cars feature spoilers that pop up from the rear deck when speeds exceed about 50 mph, but the coupe's is narrower and taller, reducing rear visibility. It's a minor quibble in an otherwise masterful design.

The basic Jaguar F-Type is already comprehensively equipped, with leather seats, premium interior materials, an upscale audio and infotainment system, and a quick-acting power top on convertibles. A power spoiler pops up at speeds above about 50 mph, and even the base-model F-Types boast the sinuous styling, driver-focused interior, and excellent driving dynamics of the higher-horsepower cars. Whether you get one of the supercharged V6 engines, or the V8, it's backed by an 8-speed automatic transmission. A fuel-saving stop/start system shuts off the engine at stops, restarting it quickly once the brake is released.

The 2015 Jaguar F-Type offers a variety of options underlining performance or luxury. Dynamic Mode enhances throttle, steering, suspension, and transmission programming to enhance the driving experience. The Configurable Dynamics settings in the touch-screen menu also let you customize the settings to your liking. On the F-Type coupe, a $ 12,000 carbon-ceramic matrix brake upgrade is overkill for the street, but worth every penny if you plan on taking your Jaguar to the track. Jaguar didn't forget it's a luxury brand though, with an available 12-speaker Meridian audio system offering 770 watts, plus giving the driver and passenger their own surround-sound fields.

Sharing their basic aluminum-alloy structure and stop/start system, the supercharged 3.0-liter V6 and 5.0-liter V8 engines vary significantly in power output, from 340 horsepower for the base V6 to 550 for the F-Type R Coupe's V8. Aluminum-alloy construction is used in both engines as is a twin-vortex supercharger and water-cooled intercooler. Another commonality is the use of aluminum cylinder heads that house the independent variable-cam-timing system. The V-6 uses counter-rotating front and rear balancer weights to compensate for the lack of two cylinders, helping to give the engine refinement similar to the V8. The power for all Jaguar F-Types is transmitted to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission.3.0-liter supercharged V6 (F-Type)340 horsepower @ 6,500 rpm332 lb-ft of torque @ 3,500-5,500 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 20/28 mpg3.0-liter supercharged V6 (F-Type S)380 horsepower @ 6,500 rpm339 lb-ft of torque @ 3,500-5,500 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 19/27 mpg5.0-liter supercharged V8 (F-Type V8 S Convertible)495 horsepower @ 6,500 rpm460 lb-ft of torque @ 2,500-5,500 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 16/23 mpg5.0-liter supercharged V8 (F-Type R Coupe)550 horsepower @ 6,500 rpm502 lb-ft of torque @ 2,500-5,500 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 16/23 mpg

You hear Jaguar executives mention the Porsche 911 a lot when discussing the 2015 F-Type, and the Jag offers a significant value advantage over its iconic German rival. F-Type Coupe models start at about $ 65,000 for the base model, jumping to around $ 77,000 for the F-Type S, and then to just under $ 100,000 for the F-Type R. For convertibles, you'll start at about $ 70,000 for the base model, stretch to $ 81,000 or so for the V6 S, and have to bring about $ 92,000 for the V8 S. That's a good value compared to the Porsche, but the Jaguar itself is undercut by the new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, itself a stunning performance car, and one with a new sense of refinement. That said, those looking at the Jaguar F-Type aren't likely to be cross shopping, and instead are looking for a uniquely British alternative to German and American sports cars.

Jaguar F-TYPE Overview and History

Jaguar’s sexy new sportscar will be one of the main talked about cars after it officially bows at the Paris Motor Show.
Jaguars are elusive, carnivorous creatures that roam South American rain forests. They can be easily recognized by their distinct black speckled fur with spots larger than those of a leopard or cheetah. Such information would be most welcome in a National Geographic show but we don't work for them. We love animals but cover cars and this is all about the wheeled Jaguar.

A sight not as rare as it used to be, Jaguars appeared in 1922 under a different company name and profile. Founded as the Swallow Sidecar company by William Lyons and William Walmsley, the company later dropped the production of sidecars to take on coach building that would eventually lead to the launch of the first Jaguar automobile in 1932. Until 1945, all Lyons & Walmsley made cars bore the SS initials, a reminder of the company's side-car making roots, when the lettering was dropped because of  resemblances to WWII nazi troops labels. Jaguar was picked as the new name.

During the pre-Jaguar period, the company produced multiple models, beautifully styled cars that garnered as much acclaim as they did criticism. Indeed, some voices insisted that Jaguar was more about glam and style rather than pure performance and reliability. Headquartered in Coventry, Great Britan up to this day, the main Jaguar plant dealt more with bodywork design and assembly rather than going through all car-production stage. The engines and chassises were supplied by the Standard Motor Company while the first were later modified to fit Jaguar designs by William Heynes and Harry Weslake, two racing enthusiasts and passionate engine developers.

After having build a number of luxurious saloon cars throughout the 30's, such as the 1932 SS1 and the sporty SS90, Jaguar amazed the automotive industry with the launch of the XK120, the fastest production car at the time. Sporting a 3.4 liter engine capable of delivering some 180 hp, the XK could reach a top sped of over 125 mph and accelerate from 0 to 60 in less than 5 seconds. Its sheer performance, affordability and sporty slim oval-shaped grille turned the car into an icon. The Jaguar had finally smiled, displaying a wonderful row of  competition-puncturing fangs.

Sparking interest in other countries as well, the XK 120 has enjoyed a great deal of popularity having been built in over 10,000 units and becoming Jaguar's first export model. Upgrades of the 120 followed withe the XK 140 and 150.

During the 50's, Jaguar shifted emphasis on building large saloon cars. The Mk VII was the first of a completely new line-up. Despite having been powered by the acclaimed XK engines, the new vehicles were not as successful. the Mk ii however, a smaller and differently styled saloon proved otherwise, becoming Jaguar's second best selling car at the time, having been produced in some 123,000 units.

By the time the 60's came, Jaguar had already build a strong reputation that was further strengthened with the launch of the ferocious E-type. Officially revealed at the Geneva Auto Show in March 1961, the E-type was the ultimate eye-candy and record breaker. Beautifully styled and incredibly fast, the car could reach an amazing 150 mph. Heir of the C and D-type legacy, the new model was unlike anything the world had seen.

The E-type was more technology improved than its predecessors, sporting an overhead cam engine, four wheel disc brakes and independent rear suspension, features that have turned it into a champ car and racing track nightmare for Ferrari who has lost several times against the British producer.

After having been built in over 70,000 units, production of the E-type ceased in 1975 when it was replaced by the not so successful XJS. William Lyons' retirement in 72' was a blow for the company who could not rise to the standards set by its founder. It was save from bankruptcy by the Leyland company. By 1984, Jaguar bought its way out but failed to make an impressive comeback since it had lost its former appeal. 1989 was the year when Jaguar became part of the Ford Motor Company alongside British Land Rover. Ford's tutelage only lasted until 2008 when Jaguar and Land Rover were sold to Indian group Tata Motors. Jaguar's current line-up consists of  luxury sedans such as the XJ models, the executive and fresh XF as a replacement of the S-type, the burgeois X-Type and the sporty XK.

R 2dr Coupe (5.0L 8cyl S/C 8A)
Short Term Review
I traded my XKRS in for the F Type R Coupe. What a difference in feel and performance. The XKRS has the same motor, same HP and torque but feels so much different. The XKRS you have to drive very carefully or else you will find yourself pointing in the wrong direction. The R Coupe coaxes you in to throwing it around. It feels solid and connected, sure footed and playful. Everything the XKRS was not. Well done Jaguar!

Ride of your life
It’s a gorgeous car with a gorgeous sound. But remember all your costs will go up. Because the insurance is going to be expensive, gas is going to be expensive and the girls who want a ride will be expensive.

This cat roars!
Love this car for running around town in a hurry! Easy to park, fun to drive easy to maintain. Nothing to hate about this car except the drop in price from new to resale.

My first JAG!
I was hesitant to purchase /lease a Jaguar based on PAST reputation of mechanical shortcomings. Boy was I surprised at the quality and performance of my F-type. It also draws a lot of attention and questions from others. It looks beautiful! Maybe a little loud for some.

2015 Jaguar F-TYPE
"Almost Perfect"
I bought this car in 2016 and, except for the seat being just a little narrow, it is the best car I have owned. It runs exactly the same in hot or cold weather and I have not had any problems with it since I bought it. It is very unique and I have not seen another orange with a black convertible top on the road where I live yet. The body style is perfect and people comment on it nearly every time I park it and get out. Great sound system, great ride (a little noisy) and great gas mileage. I would definitely buy it again

2016 Jaguar F-TYPE
"Best ever"
This is by far the most fun car I have ever owned. Just look at it! It has outstanding performance and sound to match. It has been virtually trouble-free, and service has been courteous and professional. Zero maintenance costs (aside from tires). With the 6-speed manual, the F-Type provides a completely absorbing, rewarding driving experience.

"Gorgeous car that turns heads & sounds great."
I needed a change and I replaced 2 Porsche Caymen S in a row with this vehicle. I wasnt sure it would measure up but while its a very different car - Its a very good and satisfying to drive car. A kittle more comfortable too with the exception of the seats which were better in the top of the line ones in the Porsche. Love it.

I have owned and still have a 2009 Kia amanti it is now 2024 I have 51000 miles on this car excellent handling in all weather except ice and deep snow very fast in traffic I think the handling is tight and responsive. My spouse has driven this on the interstate frequently and the first thing he did was get it up to 220 mph at this speed is floaty but under 80 mph just a pleasure to drive *****
