The 2015 Cadillac XTS's roomy, up-to-date cabin and available turbocharged V6 make it a compelling full-size luxury sedan.

Now in its third year, the 2015 Cadillac XTS is the closest thing Cadillac has to a full-size flagship sedan, at least until the top-tier CT6 arrives. It serves up a comfortable ride, standard features galore and plenty of passenger space. Granted, the XTS may seem a bit ordinary compared to true flagship models from Europe, Japan and even Korea. But with its striking looks and supreme comfort levels, there's little question that this Cadillac is determined to earn your attention.

We were pleased with last year's addition of the XTS Vsport model, which boasts a turbocharged 410-horsepower V6. Paired exclusively with all-wheel drive, it delivers serious performance along with sure-footed traction through the seasons. The real attraction of the XTS, though, is the sheer amount of space it provides. Rear seating, in particular, is quite generous, and the trunk is one of the biggest you'll find anywhere.

One of the XTS's closest competitors is the 2015 Chrysler 300, which offers a rear-wheel-drive platform, available all-wheel drive and a choice of V6 or V8 power. The redesigned 2015 Hyundai Genesis matches the Chrysler on each count, and it adds a newfound upscale character that makes it seem like a genuine bargain. On the higher end, you could look at models like the 2015 Audi A6 and 2015 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, but they're really midsize cars and don't come close to matching the Cadillac's interior room. At the end of the day, if you like the idea of a full-size luxury sedan in the classic American mold, the 2015 Cadillac XTS is bound to appeal.

The 2015 Cadillac XTS is a large luxury sedan sold in four main trim levels: base, Luxury Collection, Premium Collection and Platinum Collection. Note that the turbocharged Vsport is only offered in Premium or Platinum trim.

Standard equipment for the base XTS includes 19-inch wheels, adaptive suspension dampers with automatic leveling, xenon headlamps, LED taillamps, heated mirrors with puddle lamps, rear parking sensors, keyless entry and ignition, remote start, dual-zone automatic climate control, eight-way power front seats (with power lumbar control), a power tilt-and-telescoping multifunction wood-and-leather steering wheel, leather seating surfaces and 60/40 split-folding rear seatbacks. Standard technology features include Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity (for up to 10 devices), a new 4G LTE connection with WiFi hotspot capability, an 8-inch touchscreen that serves as the hub of Cadillac's CUE infotainment system, OnStar, voice controls and an eight-speaker Bose sound system with a CD player, satellite radio, HD radio, USB connectivity, an SD-card slot and an auxiliary input.

The XTS Luxury Collection adds visible dual-exhaust outlets in the rear fascia, illuminated door handles, rain-sensing wipers, power-folding mirrors, interior LED lighting, extended wood interior trim, a heated steering wheel, driver and front-passenger memory functions, heated and ventilated front seats, a navigation system, heated rear outboard seats, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera and an automated parallel-parking system (front-wheel-drive models only).

An optional Driver Awareness package for the Luxury Collection trim adds lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist (FWD only), a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision alert and a vibrating safety-alert driver seat.

The Premium Collection comes standard with the Driver Awareness package, and it adds adjustable thigh support for front passengers, automatic adaptive headlights, a head-up display, an upgraded 12.3-inch driver-configurable gauge cluster display, a 110-volt power outlet, a 14-speaker Bose surround-sound audio system and tri-zone automatic climate control.

The Vsport Premium adds 20-inch wheels, an electronic limited-slip differential and a sportier-looking grille, though it loses the automated parking system and lane-keeping assist due to its standard all-wheel-drive configuration.

An optional Driver Assist package for the Premium Collection and Vsport Premium adds adaptive cruise control and a forward collision mitigation system with automatic braking. A power rear-window sunshade and manual rear side-window sunshades are also available.

Both the Luxury and Premium Collections are eligible for a panoramic sunroof.

The Platinum Collection includes the above options as standard, adding special 20-inch wheels with chrome accents, unique exterior styling, a faux suede headliner, upgraded full leather upholstery, extended leather trim (including the center console, door panels and instrument-panel hood) and a deluxe rear armrest with audio and sunshade controls. The Vsport Platinum is similarly equipped, including the chrome-accented wheels, but otherwise shares the Vsport's distinctions.

The Platinum Collection models are exclusively eligible for 22-way power front seats with massage functions.

Optional on the XTS Premium and Platinum is a rear-seat Blu-ray/DVD entertainment system with dual displays, wireless headphones and a remote control.

The 2015 Cadillac XTS starts with front-wheel drive and a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 304 hp and 264 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters is standard. All-wheel drive is available and can be identified by the moniker "XTS4." In testing, an XTS4 Platinum went from zero to 60 in 7.3 seconds, a second or so behind similarly priced and powered luxury sedans. EPA-estimated fuel economy stands at 21 mpg combined (18 city/28 highway) with front-wheel drive and 20 mpg combined (17 city/26 highway) with all-wheel drive.

If you want more pep, the Vsport Premium and Vsport Platinum trims come with a turbocharged version of the 3.6-liter V6 that produces 410 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive is standard with the turbo V6, as is a six-speed automatic. We clocked an XTS Vsport at 5.4 seconds from zero to 60, which is about average for a premium luxury sedan with an upgraded engine. The EPA rates the Vsport at 19 mpg combined (16 city/24 highway).

The 2015 Cadillac XTS comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability control and traction control, front and rear-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and front knee airbags. Also standard is OnStar, which includes automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, remote door unlocking, stolen vehicle assistance and turn-by-turn navigation.

Available safety features include adaptive cruise control, forward collision alert, a more advanced forward collision mitigation system with automatic braking, a blind-spot monitor, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert and a vibrating driver seat that alerts the driver to an impending collision.

In brake testing, an XTS4 came to a stop from 60 mph in 123 feet, which is average for a car in this class wearing all-season tires. The XTS Vsport required a foot more.

In government crash tests, the XTS received a top five-star rating overall, with five stars for total frontal impact safety and five stars for total side crash safety. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the XTS its highest possible rating of "Good" in its moderate-overlap frontal offset impact test as well as the side-impact, roof-strength and whiplash protection (seats and head restraints) tests. The IIHS also rated the XTS's optional frontal collision warning and mitigation system as "Superior."

As imposing as the 2015 Cadillac XTS seems at the curb, it's a distinctly smaller car from behind the wheel. Thanks to the standard adaptive suspension and trusty steering, the XTS manages to shrink its big body around the driver.

Nonetheless, rival sedans are generally better bets for enthusiastic drivers. Comfort is king for big Cadillac sedans, and the XTS doesn't disappoint. The same adaptive suspension that keeps the body composed in corners provides a buttery-smooth ride on most surfaces. It's far from the floaty Cadillac land yachts of yore, but when you're rolling down the highway in an XTS, there's no doubt you're in the lap of luxury.

In the engine room, the Vsport's turbo V6 really transforms the driving experience. Not that there's anything terribly wrong with the base engine, but the standard XTS lacks the confident oomph of traditional Cadillacs. The muscular Vsport, on the other hand, feels more like an old Caddy V8 off the line. Springing for the upgraded engine is a no-brainer if power is a priority.

The Cadillac XTS gives you the kind of passenger volume you expect from a nearly 17-foot-long luxury sedan. Rear riders in particular will appreciate their ample accommodations. With 18 cubic feet of capacity, the XTS's trunk is one of the biggest on the market, but it's unusually narrow, so long items like golf bags will likely need to be creatively positioned.

Of course, we're used to Cadillacs that give us room to stretch out. The XTS's futuristic dashboard, though, is something else altogether. The optional 12.3-inch gauge cluster display is beautiful, first of all, with all manner of driver-configurable options. Then there's the CUE ("Cadillac User Experience") interface, which integrates audio, phone, optional navigation and OnStar functionality into an 8-inch touchscreen display. Those familiar with smartphone and tablet interfaces will feel at home with CUE's touchscreen, as it uses similar touch, swipe and pinch commands. But it can be distracting to use as sometimes it's slow to respond to your touch inputs.

There are also auxiliary touch-sensitive buttons beneath the touchscreen, and these, too, are a mixed bag. These buttons help control the stereo and climate systems, and they can be a challenge to use if you're trying to drive at the same time. For efficient operation, you may need to look down at the panel for a bit to see what you're pressing, which of course requires you to take your eyes off the road. As slick as this control panel looks, we're not convinced that it's practical enough for prime time.

The 2015 Cadillac XTS luxury sedan straddles the fence between pampering comfort and aggressive performance. It’s a spot many luxury-car buyers will probably find quite appealing. The XTS excels on the American highway, were vast expanses of concrete free it to cruise effortlessly regardless of road conditions. Credit the standard Magnetic Ride Control that constantly adapts to varying road conditions in just milliseconds. We also have high praise for the hydraulically assisted steering system used exclusively on the all-wheel-drive (AWD) models. The XTS’ cabin is so isolated from outside noise we weren’t even sure the engine was running until we checked the tachometer, which assured us it was. Power from the standard V6 isn’t superb, but at 305 horsepower we can’t claim a deficit, either. Those in the know, however, will likely opt for the 410 horsepower found on the optional twin-turbocharged V6.

DRIVER AWARENESS PACKAGECadillac is known for its long history of innovation, and this advanced safety system proves the company’s still got it. The package includes blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert. But, it also features a driver seat that vibrates to alert the driver of unintended lane changes or an eminent collision.HEAD-UP DISPLAYThe XTS luxury sedan for 2015 offers an enhanced head-up system with a full color display that includes such useful postings as speed-limit reminders and navigation instructions.

Step inside the Cadillac XTS for 2015 and you will see a rich, impeccably assembled cabin. Comfortable, leather-trimmed seats are standard, and top-line models also get leather-wrapped interior panels. The 3-passenger rear seat offers good legroom, and a massive, 18-cubic-foot trunk can swallow five or more suitcases. But not all is perfect inside the XTS. While the standard 8-inch touch-screen center controller is visually appealing and offers haptic feedback (in which the screen feels like it's touching you back), the standard CUE system is unintuitive. It requires a steep learning curve to operate what should be simple functions like audio and climate settings.

The 2015 Cadillac XTS has the angular, wedge-like profile of its CTS and ATS sedan siblings, but in longer and larger form. Design highlights include windswept headlights and side creases. Befitting this large sedan are sizable wheels: 19 inches on most models and 20-inch versions on high-end trims. Twin exhaust outlets also lend a sporty feel. All-wheel-drive models have "XTS4" badging to indicate all wheels being driven. Less obvious, but helpful, is a capless fuel-filling system that means you'll never have to unscrew a cap before refueling. The XTS also has a massive trunk.

Even if you spend the least on a base model XTS, you'll be getting a lot for your money. Among the niceties are dual-zone automatic climate control, a power-adjustable steering wheel, rear parking assist, and an 8-speaker Bose sound system with CD/HD Radio, streaming Bluetooth audio and USB inputs. Stepping up trims brings features like a rearview camera, heated and ventilated front seats, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a 12.3-inch driver-information display, and the Driver Awareness Package. Safety features include 10 airbags, GM's OnStar communications service with automatic crash response, and Brembo performance brakes. Complimentary maintenance is standard for four years or 50,000 miles.

All-wheel drive is available on base V6 versions of the 2015 Cadillac XTS (it's standard on turbocharged models). Other options vary by trim and include navigation, a 14-speaker Bose Studio Surround Sound audio system, a dual-screen rear-seat DVD entertainment system and a sunroof. The new Parking Assist feature included in higher trims enables the XTS to parallel park itself with minimal driver input. Added safety is available with the Driver Assist Package that includes adaptive cruise control and automatic braking in both forward and reverse if the system senses an impending collision.

Two engine choices are available in the 2015 Cadillac XTS. Base models use a 3.6-liter, direct-injected V6 that produces 305 horsepower. Those seeking more oomph should look to the twin-turbocharged version of that engine, which boosts pony count appreciably to 410 horsepower. The base engine can be had with all-wheel drive instead of the standard front-wheel drive (FWD), while turbo models come exclusively with all-wheel-drive. The AWD in the XTS uses Haldex technology and a limited-slip differential to transfer power front-to-back and side-to-side. It's helpful in Snowbelt states where traction can be compromised. Both engines are mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The standard V6 runs on regular unleaded, while the turbo one requires premium fuel.3.6-liter V6305 horsepower @ 6,800 rpm264 lb-ft of torque @ 5,200 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 18/28 mpg (FWD), 17/26 mpg (AWD)3.6-liter twin-turbocharged V6410 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm369 lb-ft of torque @ 1,900-5,600 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 16/24 mpg

With a starting Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of around $ 45,500, the 2015 Cadillac XTS luxury sedan undercuts the base prices of the midsize – and relatively smaller – BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the Lexus GS sedans, as well as the highly capable Acura RLX, which starts a few thousand beyond the base price of the Cadillac. The Infiniti Q70 also starts a few thousand above the XTS, while the Audi A6 opens at a few thousand below (albeit in 4-cylinder form), as does the V6 Lincoln MKS. Like other luxury cars, the XTS's price can inflate quickly. Load up a top-line turbo version, and the price can crest $ 70,000. To get the best deal before buying, be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price. We expect the XTS's resale value to parallel that of most others in this class, but significantly below that of the Lexus GS.

Cadillac XTS Overview and History

Cadillac unveiled the 2013 XTS in 2012, representing the newest addition to the Cadillac luxury sedan lineup.
Cadillac's history can be traced back to the beginning of the 18th century. Although coaches, horse riding or walking were the favorite means of locomotion during those times and no cars had been yet made, it's important to trace the brand to its origins. The genesis of Cadillac as it is widely known today began in 1701, when a group of French explorers led by Le Sieur Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac traveled to the northern parts of the US and established Ville d'Etroit. The settling would ultimately come to be known as Detroit, a flourishing industrial city, teeming with car plants and foundries.

However, Sir Cadillac would not have any connection to the future of the Cadillac car workshops. Its actual beginnings can be traced to the mid 19th century, when a boy named Henry Martyn Leland was born. Leland grew up on a farm near Barton, Vermont, where he received a solid working-education that taught him the importance of doing a job properly, regardless of its importance.

The farm-training he received, combined with his penchant for improving working methods, led to his growth as an engineer. However, Cadillac would not yet emerge as an automobile brand. By 1890, Leland had founded his own company in partnership with Robert C. Faulconer and Norton, after having convinced the former of the city's need for machine shops. The company's area of expertise was gear grinding and the development of special tools.

Soon after the company received general credit for the quality of the products it marketed and Leland had asserted himself as a talented engineer, the shift from steam-powered vehicles to gasoline-powered ones was made. Following the work of the visionary Daimler and Benz in Europe, a man named Ransom Eli Olds from Michigan teamed up with a group of investors under a firm called Olds Gasoline Engine Works. Their main objective was to  build a gasoline-powered engine to be fitted on the chassis of a vehicle.

The project was a success but the resulting product was flawed: the gears in the transmission were too loud. Olds turned to Leland and Faulconer for help. The two entered a straight competition against the Dodge brothers who were also supplying engines for Olds. Although Leland's ultimately developed 10.25 Hp engine was better than that of Dodge, Olds turned it down due to the high car sales his company registered at the time. Basically, there was no need for a new engine.

Still, Leland's engine would soon come to use. Shortly after Olds' refusal of using the newly designed engine, Leland was looked up by two men concerning the liquidation of a company that had previously built cars. Its name was the Detroit Automobile Company and had been initially reorganized by Henry Ford, who left shortly after the company began crumbling again. Leland persuaded the investors to stay in business, convincing them of the utility and importance of the automobile industry in the near future.

With an engine already designed, Leland and Faulconer were brought in and the company adopted the name of Cadillac, that of the explorer that had founded the city over two centuries ago. The Cadillac coat of arms was adopted as the company's new logo and the baby-firm would still receive international recognition for its automobiles.

Leland's engines had already garnered appreciation and were some of the most accurately built units of the time. In fact, not only the engines were reliable and built with pinpoint precision, but they were also highly versatile, successfully catering for the need of interchangeability. This feature has earned Cadillac the Dewer Trophy, being the first time when such an award was handed to an American automobile manufacturer.

Later on, Cadillac would be part of a larger entity, the General Motors company, then run by William Crapo Durant - who paid $ 4.5M in cash for Leland's company to merge with GM. From that point on, several models would be developed and enter production by Leland's departure in 1917.

The Brougham, Fleetwood, Deville and the Eldorado are some of the most famous models build by the GM's prodigious branch. Its accomplishments vary from speed breaking records on American territory to engineering improvements that were a premiere for the automotive world. For example, Cadillac introduced the revolutionary electrical lighting and ignition Delco system as standard equipment on their cars, as well as boasting the world's first independent front suspension on its entire line of automobiles in 1934.

Closed cooling systems, electronic injection systems and catalytic converters are also among the long list of first-to-have-done things introduced by Cadillac in the US. Despite the low reception of the brand in Europe, Cadillac remains one of the great classics overseas, still boasting a privileged status among American car producers. After all, it's a brand deeply rooted in nobility grounds.

Premium 4dr Sedan AWD (3.6L 6cyl 6A)
Great options!
It's difficult to drive another vehicle once you've started driving a Cadillac. Other cars can't beat the comfort and options, kinda a double edged sword.

Luxury ride with good performance
Great leg and head room. More gadgets and electronics than you can imagine. Not a big fan of the que touch screen system. It is not intuitive and can easily and dangerously distract you from keeping your eyes on the road. I much prefer the radio and nav system in my 2016 Sierra. Cadillac should abandon the cue system and adopt the Radio/ nav system in the GMC Sierra.

Like driving my couch!
Let me start by saying I have been wary about American cars until now! I had a Chrysler 300-S witch was good but missing a few things until I drove the XTS. The seats are great, the ride, climate controlled seats, and Bose system my drive a joy! I would suggest the front wheel drive over the all wheel drive, really not needed and I can feel the difference with acceleration. The MPG is less then my prior 8 speed and XTS can use a slightly bigger gas tank but I'm sticking with this one for a while, coming from a guy who changes cars every 18-24 months!

"My 2nd xts"
Second XTS traded 14 xts for 19... They really upped there game in 5 years.. 2nd year of midcycle refresh..fixed what I didn't like in the 14 ..slow cue. Much improved a great car to begin with. Better, quieter ride, seats are better..Love this car. too bad Mary Barra (GM ceo) cancelled this fine car..

"Love this xts"
I've owned everything and And traded in a Turbo regal for the XTS.which was a great driving car but getting a little tight for this old body.I watch youtube reviews where the kids say its not a fast car in 0-60 but I stepped on it getting into traffic and got pushed back in the seat so I don't know about these reviewers unless they are driving corvettes. It's not huge either,my mom in law said "Oh when did Caddy start making mid sized cars"anyways its comfortable and beautiful inside with out being over done.Oh and i'v already had two women tell me it's a beautiful car.I mean I've never been told my cars are beautiful!

2017 Cadillac XTS
"Just wait and see..."
I dont know if the 2017 XTS is any different than the 2014 I own, but I can assure the people who rave about their new 2017...just wait till the never ending problems start with all the computer technology that control every aspect of this car. Then you will be posting a much different review! I started with a 2013 XTS that was so riddled with computer problems that Cadillac took it back with 9000 miles on it and put me into a 2014. Not much change in the problems, and youll get to know your dealers service department quite well. Lastly...wait and see what the value is after three years. Youll lose 65% of what you paid when new on a trade for anything. And if you keep it beyond the 4 year warranty, you sure better look into an extended warranty just on the nightmare technology because its never ending problems. My 2014 just turned 22000 miles this week, and it will be four years old in less than 30 days. One last thought...one of the reviews claimed the XTS rides like the old Devilles and DTS. Well I have owned 10 new Cadillacs including those mentioned, and it SURE doesnt ride like they did. It has a very stiff harsh ride that you feel the slightest bump or dip in the road. So much for the lies about the Magnetic Ride Control. If you like the ride of a 53 Chevy pickup, youll love the XTS.Read less
