The 2014 Land Rover LR2's off-road credentials remain its main selling point. For those who don't need this capability, however, there are better choices for a small luxury crossover SUV.

Compared to just about every other small luxury crossover SUV, the 2014 Land Rover LR2 blazes its own path -- literally. Thanks to a sophisticated all-wheel-drive system and ample ground clearance, the LR2 is the most capable model in its class you can buy when it comes to dealing with poor weather and off-road trails. But if you're not in full need of such capabilities, the LR2's attractiveness dims in the face of newer alternatives.

Mainly, Land Rover's LR2 comes up short in key areas that are likely to be more important to a majority of luxury crossover buyers. Some of the latest technology and safety features, such as in-vehicle smartphone app integration and blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure warning systems, aren't available on the LR2. Fuel economy and power from the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine are sufficient but hardly class-leading, and no other engine is offered as an upgrade. And as one of the older models in its class (and the Land Rover lineup), the LR2's overall look and design don't have as much of an impact as they once did.

Granted, this Land Rover is still a pretty nice vehicle. But we think most consumers who aren't regularly hitting up that mountain pass to the ski chalet will be happier with other choices. The 2014 BMW X3 offers gutsier engines and better on-pavement handling. The 2014 Audi Q5 is another worthy contender with stylish good looks and a much nicer interior. The newer 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is another option to consider. Not only is its handling sportier than the LR2's, it has a decent amount of off-road capability of its own, not to mention fresher styling and a wider array of tech features. And if you really do need a trail-ready SUV, the surprisingly upscale 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee is priced similarly and offers much more in the way of powertrain options.

The 2014 Land Rover LR2 is a small, four-door luxury crossover SUV with seating for five passengers. It's offered in a single trim level.

Standard features include 18-inch alloy wheels, foglights, rain-sensing wipers, heated mirrors, a panoramic sunroof, rear privacy glass, rear parking sensors and keyless ignition/entry. Inside you'll find dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, power front seats (six-way driver, four-way passenger), an auto-dimming rearview mirror, cruise control, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, a 7-inch touchscreen display and an 11-speaker Meridian sound system with a CD player, a USB/iPod interface and an auxiliary audio input jack.

The available HSE option package bundles xenon headlights, a rearview camera and driver memory settings. The HSE Lux package includes all the above plus upgraded leather upholstery, eight-way driver and six-way power passenger seats and a 17-speaker Meridian surround-sound audio system.

The available Climate Comfort option package adds heated front seats and steering wheel, a heated windshield and heated washer jets. Stand-alone options include 19-inch alloy wheels, a navigation system and satellite radio.

Under the hood, the 2014 Land Rover LR2 sports a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 240 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard. All-wheel drive is also standard on the LR2, and Land Rover offers driver-selectable settings to optimize traction in different driving conditions.

Land Rover estimates the LR2 will run from zero to 60 mph in 8.2 seconds. Fuel economy is below average for a four-cylinder luxury crossover, with an EPA-estimated 20 mpg combined (17 mpg city/24 mpg highway).

The 2014 Land Rover LR2's list of standard safety features includes antilock brakes with brake assist, traction and stability control, hill-descent control, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag.

In normal driving, the Land Rover LR2 offers a surprisingly comfortable ride quality for a vehicle with considerable off-road mojo. Its handling is stable enough on curvy roads as well, but with its hefty curb weight and high center of gravity, it's certainly not sporty. The same can be said for the turbocharged four-cylinder engine under the LR2's hood. It provides sufficient acceleration for everyday motoring but is unlikely to set anyone's pulse racing.

Get it on an off-road trail, though, and the 2014 Land Rover LR2 has no equal in the small luxury crossover category. It's not quite as capable as its larger Range Rover siblings over truly gnarly obstacles, but it will still take you pretty far off the beaten path without breaking a sweat.

Step inside the 2014 Land Rover LR2 and you'll find a cabin that feels more open than many vehicles this size. Much of the credit for that positive first impression goes to large windows and the panoramic sunroof that combine to bring in lots of natural light. Add the high seating position, including the elevated stadium-style rear seats, and you have an interior where everyone gets an equally good view of the scenery going by.

The combination of a large 7-inch touchscreen, which has been updated for better functionality this year, and analog buttons and knobs means most controls are easily accessible. The overall look of the cabin is on the plain side, however, and many buyers will find it a letdown compared to newer offerings in this price range, particularly Land Rover's own Evoque.

Up front, occupants will find seats that offer good comfort and plenty of room to stretch out in. The backseat is a little tighter, especially for taller passengers needing legroom. Cargo space is also in short supply compared to other compact crossovers, with a total of 58.9 cubic feet with the rear seatbacks folded down.

The good news is that if you plan to take your entry-luxury SUV off road, the 2014 Land Rover LR2 is pure Land Rover. The turbocharged 4-cylinder offers broad power and smooth throttle response, perfect for carefully navigating obstacles. On road, it's a different story. While other brands may brag about their "carlike" handling, the LR2 feels more ponderous than its rivals. Still, it confidently soaks up bumps and road imperfections, and it easily negotiates corners and tight parking lots. Wind and road noise contribute to the LR2 feeling less refined than its competitors, though.

TERRAIN RESPONSEPart of the reason the Land Rover LR2 is so good off road is its Terrain Response system, which tailors vehicle characteristics to handle one of four driver-selectable settings, such as grass/gravel/snow, mud and ruts, sand and normal driving.MERIDIAN SOUND SYSTEMThere's no doubting that the 825-watt, 17-speaker Meridian surround-sound system is one of the best out there. If you're an audiophile, you're likely to look at the Land Rover LR2 as just a fancy mobile carrying case for this sound system.

Last year's upgrade to the dash has definitely paid dividends. The new dash is far more elegant and less cluttered than the old one, and the materials are mostly in line with the class, with a few cheap-looking plastics here and there. The new touch screen is designed to provide a more user-friendly experience, including improved scrolling and a QWERTY keyboard. On a more pragmatic front, the Land Rover LR2 can carry up to 59 cubic feet of cargo with the rear seats folded, which is on par with or better than other vehicles in the category.

The exterior upgrades last year were far subtler than the interior’s. The 2014 Land Rover LR2 soldiers on with the same appearance, with LEDs sprinkled here and there. Unfortunately, the LR2 is starting to look a little old, especially with the Evoque and Evoque-inspired Range Rover and Range Rover Sport on the same showroom floor. High-end HSE and HSE LUX models distinguish themselves with silver-painted grille bar inserts, fender vents and rear finisher strip. Although the LR2 rides SUV-high, step-in height and cargo loading are easily manageable for adults.

The 5-passenger 2014 Land Rover LR2 is offered in base, HSE and HSE LUX trims. In base form, the LR2 comes equipped with the Terrain Response traction-management system, a panoramic moonroof, leather upholstery and an 11-speaker audio system paired with a 7-inch touch-screen display. Mid-tier HSE models add a rearview camera, rear park distance control and xenon headlights, while primo HSE LUX versions are highlighted by the Meridian premium audio system and an 8-way power driver’s seat (6-way is standard). In terms of safety, every 2014 LR2 includes seven airbags, rollover-mitigation control and active head restraints designed to help protect against whiplash injuries.

While audiophiles can now order the Meridian sound system on the base and HSE models, Snowbelters and the perpetually cold will love the heated steering wheel and front seats that comprise the cold climate package. Improvements to the navigation system this year mean it merits a look as well. And, while it may not be a deal-breaker, the Land Rover LR2’s lack of a power liftgate is a glaring omission, particularly since nearly all luxury SUVs have offered such a convenience for the better part of a decade.

A new 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine – the same Ford-designed EcoBoost powerplant used in the Evoque – replaces the 3.2-liter inline-6 of the former model. With 240 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of peak torque, it tops the outgoing 6-cylinder engine by 10 horsepower and 16 lb-ft of torque. The carry-over 6-speed automatic transmission now incorporates Land Rover's Intelligent Power System Management (IPSM), which recovers kinetic energy during deceleration and braking to charge the battery in the most energy-efficient manner. These powertrain changes translate to a 15-percent uptick in fuel economy while delivering an improved 0-60-mph time of around 8.2 seconds (down from 8.4).2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4240 horsepower @ 5,500 rpm250 lb-ft of torque @ 1,750 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/24 mpg

The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the 2014 Land Rover LR2 starts at about $ 37,500, competitive with SUVs from Mercedes-Benz and Audi. Mid-range HSE models come in just under $ 40,000, and the HSE LUX starts at about $ 42,500. Check all the boxes, and your fully loaded HSE LUX could top more than $ 48,000, a relative bargain considering the $ 60,000 range of the similarly equipped BMW and Mercedes-Benz competitors. If you're looking to maximize your dollars, the Acura RDX is about $ 40,000 when fully loaded. To get the best deal on your next vehicle, check out ’s Fair Purchase Price tool at the bottom of this page. Likely unable to escape the dark cloud of resale value under which the Land Rover brand currently sits, the 2014 LR2 is expected to have the lowest residual values in the segment.

Land Rover LR2 Overview and History

Finding yourself stranded in the middle of nowhere because you thought you knew were you were going is bad but it's even worse when the cause of your distress is the very car you drive. Engine or suspension failure are not an option when going off-roading and Land Rover builders are well aware of this.

That's why when the vehicle's creators, the Wilks brothers, designed the first Land Rover in 1948, they made it stout like an ox. The world-renowned vehicle was not the product of a lengthy car-builder's pregnancy with new ideas but rather an answer to a why-not question type. Maurice Wilks, who was the chief designer at Rover and proud owner of a jeep, began thinking of building his own vehicle when he realized that the one he had would eventually break down.

Jeeps had already proven their utility during WWII and civil versions of the military vehicles were on the verge of entering mass production. These were great times for the British to outdo the Americans with the launch of the Land Rover. Luckily, Wilks proved to Rover-factory heads that his design would be a commercial success as well as a reliable multi purpose vehicle that could easily challenge Jeep's supremacy.

The first Land Rover was revealed at the Amsterdam Auto Show on April 30, 1948 where it caught the eye of many. Far mode orders than the maximum that could be handled poured in, making a celebrity out of the freshly-launched vehicle. Built on a Jeep chassis, the Land Rover's main selling points were its rugged, light weight construction and ability of effortlessly covering rough terrain.

Great Britain was still a colonial Empire at the time and took full advantage of its position at the time to spread the Land Rover throughout its provinces. Before befriending expeditions leaders and off-road enthusiasts, the Land Rover became popular with farmers all across Great Britain. For farmers to embrace the idea of switching from horse to Diesel-powered vehicles, the Land Rover had to make proof of its capabilities which it sure did. Soon after, it became the car of choice among gentlemen and land lords.

Soon after, the Land Rover became the main vehicle to be used in expeditions and gained a reputation unbridled up to this day for its reliability in extreme conditions. In fact, the Land Rover became so popular and was the means of transport to reach many remote areas around the world that it is claimed to be the first vehicle to have been seen by 1/3 of Earth's population.

Later models sported a sturdy 4WD system that immediately allowed Land Rover to breach new markets. By the 1970's, Land Rover experienced a sudden set back with farmers turning to similar vehicles of Japanese make that could do a Rover's job at increased affordability. The Asian car manufacturers had already made a reputation for their reliable vehicles and were close to conquering US markets, stage that Land Rovers were still far from. The situation was partially solved with the introduction of an improved Defender model that managed to regain some of its popularity.

After   a few ownership changes, Land Rover becomes property of BMW under which several new models are released as well as some minor and major upgrades are performed on older cars. The Disco and Freelander are the first two models released under BMW patronage that make a significant impact on the SUV and MPV market. Rugged construction is softened over  quality styling.

The 2000's found Land Rover and Jaguar on their way to Ford following a transaction with the American producer. As of this point, Land Rover becomes the target of unfavorable consumer reports due to lesser quality and reliability. However, the rightfully thrown press-mud is wiped clean of Land Rover's windshield as its cars go through a serious quality management process. Despite its comeback, the company is once again passed to a new owner as of this year having become with Jaguar part  of the Indian Group Tata Motors.

Good 2014 LR2
Thus far, I’ve been impressed with the drivablity of the little car. The only issue has been with a key fob not registering to the car (even with a new battery) and the availability of service in Omaha with the local dealer. Leadtimes for service appointments are running five weeks. If new car buyers knew that the service deptartment was this far under water, i have to believe Lexus would take all of their busineess.

"Still love it"
A car has to perfect to get all 5 stars, but this one is pretty close. It's a 2011 with 108k miles. A CPO warranty took care of a wheel bearing and a power steering pump. Even out of warranty, Land Rover paid 3/4 in replacing a grinding rear differential. KUDOS to them !!. It's been a great car. It still looks great, inside and out. It's fairly quiet and handles pretty good. Does great on the beaches of Outer Banks. Parts and maintenance are a little pricey, but I do oil changes myself. Spark plugs we're very easy. The drive belt at 100k is very tricky, so I had my local mechanic do it. Overall, I've been very satisfied with the car

"Compact, agile SUV. Performs very well."
Compact, agile SUV. Great ride. Only negative is replacing the key fob is super expensive $ 500 per fob lasts 2 yrs. I can’t find replace the battery without cutting open the fob. Frustrating. Otherwise the car drives and performs great! Has plenty power, beautiful sunroof and moonroof!

2008 Land Rover LR2
"Unreliable"
Transmission needed to be replaced around 80,000 miles. And replacement parts are hard to find and extremely expensive. Expect your maintenance fees to be 2-3 times higher than other cars. Around 80,000+ cost of ownership in repairing broken parts was roughly $ 3000 a year. Looking into this specific model more. I found that this is based of the freelander a car so riddled with problems Land Rover re-purchased as many as they found to keep them off the road. I would steer clear of the Lr2 if you want to keep it for more than 5 years.
