If the BMW's 3 Series serves as the definition of "sport sedan," then the 2013 Lexus IS 250 and IS 350 might be seen as the "Grand Tourers" of the category. While the Lexus IS isn't as engaging or nimble as its sportier rivals, all iterations provide a level of compliant composure the Germans rarely deliver – at least in this size category. Of course, what's under the hood will determine, in large part, where you peg the smile meter. The entry-level IS 250 focuses on practical characteristics such as fuel efficiency and ride quality, while the more powerful Lexus IS 350 borders on the visceral. As Lexus' first super sedan, the V8-equipped IS F makes a credible run at BMW's M3, and does it without earning the costly gas-guzzler tax. Given its mission, the hardtop convertible – with either V6 powertrain – is little more than a boulevard cruiser.

AVAILABLE ALL-WHEEL DRIVE (AWD)In a segment offering all-wheel drive as an all-season prerogative, Lexus' approach delivers 70 percent of the engine power to the rear wheels under normal operating conditions. With that proportional distribution, little of the sport orientation is lost on dry pavement, while traction is enhanced on wet or slickened pavement.F SPORT PACKAGEWhile the well-tuned standard suspension will please most buyers, Lexus' F Sport Package incorporates firmer springs and shock absorbers along with a recalibrated electric power steering system to elevate the performance of any rear-drive IS model to near-BMW 3 Series levels of agility and fun.

As BMW and Audi interiors continue to gravitate toward mid-size, the smaller Lexus remains, well, small. The driver and front-seat passenger are well accommodated, and all seating positions are well appointed, but this is best regarded as a "personal" 4-door sport sedan, one which will never be confused with a family hauler. Of course, if you're in a Lexus showroom shopping for the family, the dealer has roughly a half-dozen better choices from which to choose. We like the personal feel of the IS, and the convertible hardtop offers unlimited headroom – with the top down, of course.

The Lexus IS 250/350 body shell shown in March, 2005 was remarkable for its utter lack of adornment or distraction. A softened wedge profile, short overhangs and a raked windshield created a sporting 4-door that was almost coupe-like in its design. Opt for the IS F (or F Sport package) and things get more enthusiastic. The IS C hardtop convertible strikes, to these eyes, the only discordant note; in order to accommodate the folding hardtop, Lexus designers added an unsightly slab of bulbous sheet metal to the rear end.

The term "bang-for-the-buck" is seldom associated with luxury vehicles, but with an attractive base price and long list of standard features, the Lexus IS offers perhaps the best value in the category. At its about-$ 36,000 starting price, the Lexus IS includes leather seating, smart access with push-button start, 10-way power front seats, power moonroof and a 13-speaker premium audio system. Opting for the IS 350 gets you xenon headlights that emit up to three times the light of standard halogen systems, a 306-horsepower V6 and beefed-up brakes. On the safety front, every Lexus IS includes eight airbags, built-in telematics with emergency services and hill-start assist, which prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards when starting off on a steep grade.

Buyers looking to bridge the performance gap between the mainstream IS and the race-inspired IS F will find the available F Sport Package up to the task. Upgrades include 18-inch alloy wheels with a dark graphite finish, aggressively-tuned electric power steering, firmer suspension and a host of cosmetic adornments for both the interior and exterior. Technophiles will rejoice at the newly-available Lexus Enform 2.0 infotainment system comprised of HD Radio with iTunes Tagging and in-vehicle mobile applications such as Bing local search, OpenTable, MovieTickets.com, Yelp and Pandora Internet radio.

Two technology-intensive, all-aluminum V6 engines provide clean and comparatively fuel-efficient motivation for the IS line. Both powertrains use dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) and direct fuel injection. The 2.5-liter develops 204 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque, sufficient to take a rear-drive IS 250 from zero to 60 mph in under eight seconds. The 3.5-liter V6 in the IS 350 adds secondary port injection and cranks out 306 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. Backed by a multi-mode automatic with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, it propels the fleetest member of the standard IS family from zero to 60 mph in about 5.5 seconds. If a zero-to-60-mph time of less than six seconds isn't quite quick enough, consider the IS F's 5.0-liter V8, and then go cruising for pink slips – or tickets. The all-aluminum 8-cylinder engine produces 416 horsepower and 371 lb-ft of torque, and is capable of launching the IS F from zero to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds with a top track speed of 170 mph. All engines require premium unleaded fuel.2.5-liter V6204 horsepower @ 6,400 rpm185 lb-ft of torque @ 4,800 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 21/30 mpg, 21/27 mpg (AWD)3.5-liter V6306 horsepower @ 6,400 rpm277 lb-ft of torque @ 4,800 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 19/27 mpg (rear-wheel drive), 19/26 mpg (AWD)5.0-liter V8416 horsepower @ 6,600 rpm371 lb-ft of torque @ 5,200 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 16/23 mpg

The base Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for a 2013 Lexus IS 250 is right around $ 36,000, with the IS 350 coming in closer to $ 41,000. High-performance IS F variants are roughly $ 62,500. Although it features less standard equipment, the Audi A4 undercuts the Lexus IS by nearly $ 3,000, while the Infiniti G37 and BMW 3 Series will be about $ 2,000 and $ 3,000 over the IS, respectively. Down the road, we expect the Lexus IS will maintain the best 5-year residual values in the segment.

Lexus IS Overview and History

The 2014 IS sedan will be delivered with the promise of an engaging drive and better quality. Performance offered in a sleek daily use sedan. The Lexus IS C debuted on October 2, 2008 at the Paris Auto Show as the convertible version for the IS model, which for four years had only one body style.
If American car-manufacturer heads had been warned about a Japanese take-over in the mid 80's, they would have almost certainly laughed at the prospect. Humorous or not, the Japanese did conquer US, not through mecha led wars but rather through anime and cars. However, before the mild-assault began, there were a series of weird meetings held in secrecy in chairman chambers.

Such a meeting was held in 1983 between Toyota chairman Eiji Toyoda and his company executives. Toyoda had not invited his enforcers over for cookies and tea but to question them about the possibility of developing a luxury-car line that could successfully compete with American brands. The project was labeled as F1 -Flahship 1- and proved to be a most lucrative  endeavor. The result was a vehicle that later became known as the Lexus LS 400 prior to its US premier.

The LS 400 was not just a car that took time and resources to built. In researching American luxury-product consumer habits and lifestyles, the Japanese went as far as renting a house in Laguna beach in order to observe their “subjects” closely. Offspring of long-gestating consumer research and cutting-edge engineering, the LX 400 was a hit.

Endorsed by insightful advertising, the LS 400 made its entrance at the North American Auto Show in Detroit, 1989 where it was one of the main attractions. And how could it not have been after 24 engineering teams and a few thousands employees worked on 450 prototypes at the cost of a paltry $ 1 billion investment?

The main advantage Lexus had over Acura, that had reached US markets 3 years before, was its uniqueness. Unlike the first Acura models which were sold as rebadged Hondas, the Lexus held little connections to Toyota design patterns.

Silent, ergonomic, powerful and reliable, the LS became a fierce competitor for European imports such as Mercedes Benz and BMW, whose sales drastically dropped following Lexus' trumpeting market entrance.

Models like the ES 250 followed which along the LS registered enough sales to allow the brand expanding through an 81-dealership network. During those first years of sales, Lexus became the top-selling luxury car in the U.S. Things were going smoothly for the Japanese manufacturer, just like its cars, and in 1991, two new models were released: the SC400 coupe and the ES 300 sedan. The latter was marketed as a replacement for the ES 250 and quickly became the company's best selling sedan.

Following the release of a heir to the LS 400 and the Toyota Aristo-based series of the GS, Lexus entered the sport utility vehicle segment in 1996 with the launch of the LX 450, a large car based on the Toyota Land Cruiser 100. By 1998, Lexus would release the RX, a top-selling crossover based on Toyota's Camry model as well as a new series of the GS. During the following years, further technological improvements such as the introduction of the Lexus Hybrid Drive system on the 2005 RX 400h, resulted in an even greater sales increase.

Things were so good for Lexus that it has constantly grown since its inception. The brand has been introduced to the Japanese home-market in 2005 as well as it has in other regions of Asia and South America as well as Australia and Europe. By 2007, Lexus had spread in over 50 countries and it continues to grow. The company's “pursuit of perfection” is fronted by its current line-up, comprised of the IS, LS and RX series among others as well as the avant-garde LF-A concepts.

2011 Lexus IS F
"excellent V8 performance value"
I am on my second ISF, wow. the 2010 and newer are really the models to get with the limited slip diff. I love the car, reliability, power, and value. Build quality excellent, and car starts without a hicup everyday. I love the subtle styling and the limited quantities...

2012 Lexus IS
"A Quality Car"
NO mechanical issues at all; nothing repaired. Serviced every 5,000 miles with Mobil 1 fully synthetic oil. Fun to drive and decent MPG, albeit it requires premium fuel. Two caveats: (1) Tire wear is disappointing and (2) Lexus strongly suggested valve cleaning - not under warranty. As we plan to keep the IS, we had it done ($ 175).

2006 Lexus IS
"LEXUS LET ME DOWN FOR THE FIRST TIME"
Aside from being reliable and a great everyday car, Lexus has let me down here. I've owned 2 other Lexus " IS200T and RX350" that didn't give me any issues, not until I bought a 2006 Lexus IS350. I bought it USED. However, it's been fairly reliable. The only downside I've experienced was Lexus's Warranty. If you aren't aware, Lexus has a defect with "sticky" dashboards and door panels melting. Unfortunately I was one of the effected owners. It makes it hard to drive my IS350 without being blinded by the glare of the dashboard, it becomes a safety hazard if you ask me. Unfortunately I've already Contacted Lexus regarding the issues that I was having, GUESS WHAT NO LUCK. The best they can do is reimburse me for a dashboard cover. REALLY?! although it'll solve somewhat the issue, but its unbearable to look at! They couldn't do anything with my door panels, they quoted $ 800 per door. It hurts me personally when I have passengers in my car seeing that my doors are scratched, rips, discolored, and sticky. THAT IS NOT "pursuit of perfection" as Lexus Claims. After owning 3 Lexus vehicles, this is going to be my last. Sadly I wouldn't want to leave such a great car company. DONT GET ME WRONG, THE CAR IS SUPER RELIABLE, But with this type of issues "safety hazard" "quality defect" and constant back and forth with Lexus Customer Service, I gave up on the brand!
