Design, performance and technology drive the 2013 Infiniti FX to the forefront of luxury SUVs. But for a versatile family and cargo hauler, look elsewhere.

The 2013 Infiniti FX sport-luxury crossover SUV is designed for those who value style, performance and technology over cargo capacity, rear seat space or a cushy ride. Built using the same architecture as the Infiniti G37 sport sedan, the FX offers a level of carlike performance rivaled by few crossovers or SUVs.

With lively, responsive handling and a choice of either a powerful V6 or world-class V8 under the hood, the FX always feels ready to tackle a twisting road. For 2013, the FX is a bit quicker, too, as the previous FX35 becomes the FX37 thanks to a larger 3.7-liter V6 engine generating 325 horsepower (up 22 hp from the FX35).

As before, the Infiniti FX offers impressive premium standard features and high-quality materials that distinguish it as a true luxury crossover. The plush, modern cabin looks great and features an easy-to-use electronics interface. Naturally, you can add a host of optional extras, including adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree parking camera, ventilated front seats and a rear entertainment system with twin displays.

Unfortunately, the Infiniti FX also has some drawbacks that its high-tech wizardry can't solve. Luggage space is smaller than that of its competitors, as is rear-seat space. The FX's impressive handling also comes at the expense of ride comfort. Some may find the stiff suspension a bit too harsh for their tastes, especially with the optional larger wheels installed.

With that in mind, the sporty FX series won't be your best choice if utility is a priority. The Acura MDX and Lexus RX 350 aren't as sporty but offer more passenger and cargo space and near-equal levels of refinement. Still, for a performance-oriented crossover, the FX is a solid pick and becomes even more appealing when you consider that it costs less than European competitors like the 2013 BMW X6 and 2013 Porsche Cayenne.

The 2013 Infiniti FX sport-luxury crossover SUV is offered in three trim levels: FX37, FX37 Limited Edition and FX50. The V6-powered FX37 is available with either rear- or all-wheel drive, while the V8-powered FX50 is only offered with AWD.

The FX37 comes standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic xenon headlights, foglights, a sunroof, power-folding heated outside mirrors, keyless ignition/entry, a power liftgate, leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated eight-way power front seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. Standard electronics include a back-up camera, Bluetooth and an 11-speaker Bose surround-sound audio system with a six-CD changer, an iPod/USB connection, an auxiliary audio jack and satellite radio.

Options for the FX37 include a Premium package, which offers aluminum roof rails, driver seat memory, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a 360-degree parking camera system, front and rear parking sensors, a navigation system, a larger touchscreen display, voice controls, expanded digital music storage and Bluetooth streaming audio. The Deluxe Touring package (which requires the Premium package) adds 20-inch wheels, quilted leather seating, ventilated front seats, maple wood trim and a cargo cover.

The FX37 Limited Edition features all-wheel drive, exclusive paint, 21-inch wheels, dark-tinted adaptive xenon headlights and some features from the Premium package, including driver seat memory, the navigation system and the parking camera system. Additional option packages aren't available for the Limited Edition.

The FX50 generally includes all of the above plus a more advanced climate control system with air filtration, quilted leather seating and ventilated front seats.

The Technology package (which requires the Deluxe Touring package for the FX37) adds automatic wipers, adaptive cruise control, adaptive headlamps, forward collision warning, intelligent brake assist and a lane-departure warning and prevention system. A twin-screen rear-seat entertainment system is a stand-alone option for all FX models.

A Sport package is available for the FX50 only, and adds dark-tinted exterior trim, active rear steering, adaptive two-mode suspension dampers, solid magnesium paddle shifters and sport front seats.

The 2013 Infiniti FX37 is powered by a 3.7-liter V6 that produces 325 hp and 267 pound-feet of torque. The FX50 is powered by a 5.0-liter V8 that produces 390 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. A seven-speed automatic with manual shift control is the only transmission available. Rear-wheel drive is standard for the FX37; an all-wheel-drive system with a rear bias to preserve the vehicle's sporty handling capabilities is optional. The FX50 is only offered with AWD.

At the test track, the FX37 sprinted from zero to 60 mph in just 6.2 seconds. The V8-powered FX50 got to the same speed in an impressive 5.5 seconds. EPA-estimated fuel economy for the rear-wheel-drive FX37 is 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway and 19 mpg combined. All-wheel-drive models are rated slightly less at 16/22/18 mpg. The FX50 is estimated at 14/20/16 mpg.

Standard safety features for the 2013 Infiniti FX37 and FX50 include antilock disc brakes, front seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and traction control and stability control. Lane-departure warning/prevention and cross-traffic alert systems are optional, as are adaptive cruise control and intelligent brake assist. The latter uses the laser rangefinder from the adaptive cruise control to analyze closing speeds to an object ahead. If a forward collision is deemed imminent, the system sounds a warning to prompt driver action and can automatically apply the brakes up to 0.5g.

In crash tests, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Infiniti FX models its highest score of "Good" for frontal-offset impact protection. In brake testing, an FX50 stopped from 60 mph in 124 feet while the FX37 did a little better at 120 feet – about average for a luxury crossover.

In terms of handling and ride quality, both the 2013 Infiniti FX37 and FX50 deliver similar experiences.

On twisting roads, the FX displays impressive road-holding prowess and confidence, aided by consistent brakes and a tight, direct steering feel. The trade-off, however, is a stiffer ride on the highway. Opting for the larger wheel sizes only compounds matters, increasing road noise and impact harshness.

The V6-powered FX37 delivers a smooth stream of power while the seven-speed automatic transmission executes shifts quickly and smoothly. Manually shifting provides slick, matched-rev downshifts. Most drivers will find that this engine provides more than enough power. For those who still need more, the FX50 obliges with a flood of torque that launches this midsize crossover toward the horizon with ease.

The 2013 Infiniti FX's cabin environment yields nothing to its competitors. With supple leathers, rich wood trim, brushed metal accents, cool ambient lighting and soft-touch materials covering nearly every surface, this is about as luxurious as you'll find in the segment. The audio and navigation systems require a short learning curve, using both virtual and tactile inputs, but operating them soon becomes impressively simple and intuitive. The optional 360-degree camera provides a top-down view of the FX in relation to its surroundings -- helpful when negotiating tight spaces.

The front seats are quite comfortable and are aided by ample head- and legroom, but because of the FX's sloping roof line, the rear seats can be a tight fit for taller passengers. The FX's sleek profile also compromises cargo space, offering 25 cubic feet of luggage space behind the rear seats. Folding the seats offers total volume of just 62 cubes -- well short of what most competitors offer.

The 2013 Infiniti FX's exterior shape sacrifices some utility in the name of sporting character, and the rest of the vehicle does the same. Even at its most opulent, the FX50 all-wheel driver (AWD) carries but 53 percent of its approximately 4,500 pounds on the front end – not a lot by sport-utility standards. A balanced chassis plus all-independent suspension and lively powertrains, all tuned for stability and response rather than quiet comfort, make for a fine-handling car, never mind it's a sport-utility vehicle. The new 325-horsepower V6 is plenty capable and the 390-hosepower 5.0 V8 feels downright fast. The 7-speed automatic has an effective manual-shift mode than includes a nice throttle blip on downshifts. With over seven inches of ground clearance you can certainly get to the trailhead, though you may not want to carry on into the rocks and creek beds.

3.7-LITER DOHC V6Nissan's all-aluminum, 4-valve-per-cylinder V6 has long been a sweetheart of an engine. The larger 3.7-liter version (already used in the Infiniti G, Nissan Z and others) carries on the tradition, with even more power and efficiency to go with its smooth, free-revving character.IN-YOUR-FACE SHEETMETALRarely does a big car company embrace a love-it-or-leave-it exterior design, but Infiniti went all in with the original styling of the FX. Some restraint – and with it, more elegance – has crept in with the intervening facelifts, but the 2013 Infiniti FX is still a powerful aesthetic statement.

You step up, as with any SUV, to enter the Infiniti FX, but once inside, it feels more like a swoopy sports sedan. Though not as daringly styled as the exterior, the FX cabin is still quite unusual among SUVs, whose cabins are generally laid out for utility and functionality first. In the FX, a driver-centric cockpit with a pronounced center-stack design confirms the message that this thing is for driving first, and although the folding rear seatbacks add flexibility for hauling cargo, the reality is rear-seat and load-deck space is just not very generous.

The Infiniti FX's look has softened some over the years but you still won't confuse it with your cousin's Nissan Rogue. The sheetmetal below the beltline is barely able to contain the wheel-and-tire package (especially with the 20- or 21-inch wheels) while topside the greenhouse looks slightly undersized relative to the rest of the SUV's expanse. Fenders bulge not so subtly, there are aero-look details front and rear, and the headlight and taillight treatments (new last year) are distinctive. The sleek shape squeezes cargo and passenger space in back, but that's the FX proposition.

Befitting the category and Infiniti's pack-it-with-value mantra, both the FX37 and the FX50 benefit from a wide array of standard features. This includes High Intensity Discharge (HID) xenon headlights, a power moonroof, power rear liftgate and privacy glass. Inside there's even more, beginning with dual-zone automatic temperature control, rear-seat heating and cooling vents, leather-appointed seating, 10-way-power driver's seat, 8-way-power passenger's seat, black lacquer interior trim and leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. The FX50 moves up a few notches with quilted-leather upholstery, advanced climate control and entry/exit assist on the driver's seat and steering wheel.

Most FX options are bundled into packages. The Premium Package includes navigation, XM NavTraffic and NavWeather, 8-inch WVGA color touch-screen display and Streaming Audio via Bluetooth. The Deluxe Touring Package (FX37 only) has 20-inch alloy wheels, maple interior accents, climate-controlled front seats and quilted leather-appointed seating. The Technology Package includes Intelligent Cruise Control, Intelligent Brake Assist, Lane Departure Warning and Distance Control Assist. The Sport Package ups the ante for FX50 drivers with Continuous Damping Control, Rear Active Steer and other sporting upgrades.

For 2013, the FX's V6 engine grows from 3.5 liters to 3.7, and benefits from Variable Valve Event and Lift (VVEL) technology to optimize power, efficiency and emissions. With 325 horsepower, it's all the FX really needs. Status and speed will lure many to the more expensive 5.0-liter V8. Rated at 390 horsepower, the V8 provides a significant increase in power over the V6 without a huge penalty in fuel economy. Both engines are connected to a 7-speed automatic transmission with both manual-shift mode and Adaptive Shift Control. The FX37 is available as a rear-driver (RWD) or with all-wheel drive (AWD); the FX50 is AWD only.3.7-liter V6325 horsepower @ 7,000 rpm267 lb-ft of torque @ 5,200 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/24 mpg (RWD), 16/22 mpg (AWD)5.0-liter V8390 horsepower @ 6,500 rpm369 lb-ft of torque @ 4,400 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 14/20 mpg

A base 2013 Infiniti FX37 with RWD starts at just over $ 45,000, while AWD adds $ 1,450. The FX50 with AWD standard has a base of $ 61,600, and can top $ 68,000 with its Sports Technology Package and a good selection of accessories. The FX35 AWD Limited Edition model costs $ 53,700, for as long as they last (only 550 units are slated for production). The Acura ZDX has a similar price spread – $ 47,000 to $ 57,000 – while offering even less utility. The Audi Q7, BMW X6 and Porsche Cayenne are similarly priced to start but they can quickly accelerate toward $ 100,000. Check KBB's Fair Purchase Price to see transaction prices for the 2013 Infiniti FX in your area. Residual values for the FX should be roughly the same as those of the Cayenne and Q7, but below those of BMW's X6.

Infiniti FX Overview and History

Disturbingly persistent in delivering high-end automobiles, Infiniti has recently greenlighted production of the new FX.
Infiniti is Nissan's luxury car division. Established in 1989 to compete on the US premium auto market alongside brands like fellow Japanese Acura and Lexus as well as European-based BMW,  Audi and BMW, Infiniti managed to create a global network in a fairly little amount of time. Its history can be traced back two decades ago when the company's first vehicles were sold.

Part of the Oriental commercial tsunami, Infiniti swept across the American land with remarkable speed but with little strength. Freshly born, it did not scream loud enough to be heard. Sales of their first model, the Q45 were fairly poor as a result of what is widely believed to have been slightly bad advertising. In attempt to draw attention to their cars, Infiniti resorted to a series of Zen-inspired commercials that showed the car very briefly or not at all in some cases.

However, Infiniti concentrated resources in a second ad campaign and production of superior quality automobiles that eventually paid off. Based on Nissan's platforms, most Infinitis are redesigned models, except their latest range which includes  the sporty G37 and the luxurious SUV FX that mark the brand's attempt of becoming a truly separate entity.

No matter how good or bad Infiniti's ad strategy was, its vehicles were truly attention worthy. The Q45 for example sported a brawny 278 hp V8 engine, four wheel steering and active suspension, all of these features having been a premiere for automobiles in its class. Meticulously executed trims and fine finishes further added to the car's overall appearance.

Even the Infiniti badge hints at the extent the company would go to develop a quality top-selling product: far. Comparisons are lost within infinity thus 'far' becomes incommensurable. The horizontal bars shaped to form a stylized highway meet somewhere close to the horizon which is never a fixed point.

Besides clever product badging and advertising, Infiniti has been striving to stay on top ever since it became a stable brand. If the car-market context of that time is to be taken into consideration, Infiniti did good considering that European markets had surpassed traditional brands like Lincoln and Cadillac.

The beginning of the 1990's saw Infiniti launching a second model, the M30 which sold rather slowly compared to the Q45. Towards the mid 90's however, Infiniti would release the QX4, a modified version of the Nissan Pathfinder, making the company the first to have sold a luxury SUV right after specialized manufacturers like Jeep and Land Rover.

After experiencing poor sales due to insufficiently developed models and wrong demographic targeting, Infiniti was nearing extension. Just like Hyundai, Infiniti did not cease to exist but instead focused on developing a newer range of vehicles that ultimately ensured the brand's survival. The marque entered a new stage in 2003 with the release of the G35, a model predating the launch of the G37, a model farther from anything Infiniti has done in the past.

The brand is presently making its way through European markets. Since its foundation, it has limitlessly grown, currently including 230 dealers in 15 countries. Its global operations have grown exponentially, having stretched form Mexico to Russia and from Ukraine to China and Taiwan. As with the majority of Japanese car makers, Infinti emphasizes the importance of technological improvements. Among the latest innovations, it has delivered the regenerative Anti Scratch Advanced Paint or ASAP as well as the Around View, an optics system that allows the driver to see a complete image of the car's surroundings.

2013 Infiniti FX Consumer Reviews

Gas Shocker
I purchased this car about six months ago after driving a Lexus RX SUV for several years. I was impressed with the appearance of the large tires and body style. That along with friends loving theirs, influenced my buy. What was the frosting on the cake is the Hwy gas mileage. 31 mpg at 65 to 70 miles per hour on cruise. Constantly so! I love this jewel and especially the soft white color. I do not get excellent mileage around the city due to stops, starts and possibly quick starts. Still, it is not bad. Anywhere from 17 to 23 in the city. The unexpected excellent hwy gas mileage was not noted on the specs. I have never had a vehicle with so many compliments from other drivers.

FX37 4dr SUV (3.7L 6cyl 7A)
Outstanding!
I read every review that I could find before making this purchase so nothing was a surprise to me. I absolutely love this SUV! It far exceeds my expectations. I considered the Lexus RX350 and the Acura RDX, but the Infiniti FX37 has such a unique look and you don't see them everywhere. This vehicle has great power and looks tough. It is a great car/SUV combination! I highly recommend this purchase! The only flaw I have encountered is this vehicle does not have the smooth ride of a luxury vehicle, it rides like a sports car. Also, there is not a lot of cargo room or storage compartments.

Great handling
I wanted a sporty suv. Room was not a major concern. I wanted it built well with power and a sporty look. I got just what I wanted. The FX37 AWD drives and handles beautifully. Really nice power when you want it with quick steering response. It's a sports ride so don't think you will get a floating ride. It's a little stiff on the street but on the open road at highway speeds it's an enjoyable ride. Storage is good for a couple of people going on a trip but if you have a family look else where. I'm 6' 1" and the front seats are no problem. The rear seats recline and that makes them comfortable for me but straight up they are a little tight.

Best SUV we have owned
We wanted a mid-sized Luxury SUV that was sporty. Most SUVs are too cushy & underpowered. The Porsche, BMW are cool but too costly for us. That really only left the FX, Cadillac, Acura. The Acura & Cadillac were very good. But the Infiniti had the most power & best electronics. It the difference for my wife. With cameras on 4 sides, not just 3 sides like the BMW, she can park the FX better than her Mini. It's a joy to drive. Great feel & firm handling. It's a rear wheel based AWD, sports car.

2009 INFINITI FX
"Sweet ride"
This suv has been nothing short of amazing! I really worried about what kind of problems would come after 100,000 miles, now almost 160k and in that 60k in Mileage I’ve only had to do about 1k in work. I’ve been super about maintenance and making sure I followed the scheduled yearly work in the earlier days and it’s paid off! The ride is not super smooth but that does not bother me the loud muffler and sound system has been amazing from the very start! For a 2009, that pearl white still turns heads when you pull up!

2017 INFINITI QX70
"2017 QX70S Is The Best Yet"
I bought the first generation FX35 (2003), I loved the forward design. Because I enjoyed that car so much I bought the last generation QX70S (2017). After owning it for more than a year it's proving to be an outstanding ownership experience. It's classed as an SUV but it's got the heart, brain and muscle of a sports car.

2015 INFINITI QX70
"INFINITI MAKE THIS CAR AGAIN!!!"
INFINITI! WHY ON EARTH DID YOU STOP MAKING THIS SUV?! It is hands down the best looking car Infiniti has made and drives like a sports car. The ride comfort has something to be desired but when you get to a corner it steers so flat. The exhaust note is incredible for a v6 and sounds so good when you hit the 4-6k RPM range. The swoops and curves of the vehicle make it aerodynamic and handsome to look at. Snow traction is phenomenal and it even has a snow mode. The nav screen is a little childish and pixelly but the voice recognition is very responsive. Fuel economy is horrendous. My dad's Tahoe gets better fuel economy than this car and its got a V8. Aside from the few problems that this car has, I would 100% recommend this car to anyone who is looking at it.
