The 2013 Audi S6 is a car as powerful as a BMW M edition and as refined as a Mercedes-Benz AMG, yet more stylish than both.

With the 2013 Audi S6, Audi reinvents its line of S-equipped models, splitting the difference between the pure performance of BMW M and the refinement of Mercedes-Benz AMG. The key hardware includes a high-performance engine, air suspension, upgraded brakes and high-performance tires, and they add up to an energetic car that is also unexpectedly refined.

A new twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 replaces the former naturally aspirated V10. It makes less horsepower but slightly more torque than its predecessor, putting 420 horsepower and 406 pound-feet to the ground through a dual-clutch seven-speed automated manual transmission. All-wheel drive is standard.

The new S6 has bulked up a bit compared to its precursor, gaining about 130 pounds. But considering the additional electronics and driver aids onboard, that's not bad. A body comprised of 20 percent aluminum lightens the load, while the new chassis -- which locates the engine farther rearward -- helps the latest S6 respond more crisply as it enters the corners.

Audi claims the 2013 Audi S6 can sprint from zero to 60 mph in less than 4.8 seconds, a full second quicker than the former V10-powered model. Yet even with its quicker acceleration, the 4.0-liter also delivers improved fuel economy to the tune of 20 mpg in combined city/highway driving.

The S6 also carries the creature comforts and other performance upgrades expected of the "S" version of a given Audi. These include a sport-tuned, adaptive air suspension with variable damping, 19- and 20-inch wheels and driver assistance systems including adaptive cruise control, pre-collision warning, lane departure warning and night vision. A stunning Bang & Olufsen audio system, adaptive LED headlights, parking assist with a 360-degree camera view and massaging seats are also available. There's even a WiFi router option that turns the S6 into a mobile hotspot, and a navigation system with touchpad and handwriting recognition.

As you've likely realized by this point, the 2013 Audi S6 is very well-equipped to take on V8-powered rivals like the BMW 5 Series, Jaguar XF and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Overall we think pretty highly of the new S6 and believe it's worth a good look if you desire a midsize luxury sport sedan with equal levels of performance, technology and style.

The 2013 Audi S6 is a midsize super sport sedan that comes in a single Prestige trim level.

Standard features include 19-inch wheels, adaptive xenon headlights, adaptive air suspension, power sunroof, keyless ignition/entry, heated auto-dimming sideview mirrors, park assist with rearview camera, garage door opener, Audi Drive Select, diamond-stitched leather upholstery, real ash wood accents, 12-way power heated front sport seats, driver memory settings, power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, four-zone automatic climate control, a navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity, Audi Connect Internet integration and a Bose audio system with CD/DVD player, HD radio and USB/iPod interface.

Options for the S6 include a number of packages. The Innovation package features adaptive cruise control (with stop and go functionality), power-folding sideview mirrors, night vision assist, a head-up display, side blind-zone warning, lane departure warning/assist and Audi pre-sense plus (which alerts the driver if a potential collision is detected and automatically applies the brakes if necessary). The Driver Assistance package includes the adaptive cruise, side blind-zone warning, power-folding mirrors and Pre-Sense Plus. The Comfort Seating package features multicontour front seats with ventilation and massaging functions, passenger memory settings and the deletion of the diamond stitching. A Cold Weather package provides a heated rear seat and a heated steering wheel.

Individual option highlights include 20-inch wheels, LED headlights, a power rear sunshade, rear seat side airbags, a Bang & Olufsen sound system and a number of different accents (brushed aluminum, carbon black, oak wood) in lieu of the standard ash wood.

A twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 powers the S6. It pumps out 420 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque that runs to the ground through a dual-clutch seven-speed automated manual transmission and all-wheel drive.

Audi claims the S6 can sprint from zero to 60 mph in less than 4.8 seconds, a full second quicker than what the previous V10-equipped S6 ran. Despite that blistering performance, the 2013 S6 returns good fuel economy thanks to a refined cylinder-deactivation system supplemented by variable valve timing, and EPA estimates stand at 17 mpg city/27 mpg highway and 20 mpg combined.

Standard safety equipment on the 2013 Audi S6 includes antilock disc brakes, stability control, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and front knee airbags.

Rear side airbags, blind-spot and lane departure systems are optional, as is the Audi Pre-Sense Plus system which can warn the driver and automatically activate the brakes and adjust the front seats for maximum protection if a crash is deemed imminent.

In crash testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the similar A6 on which the S6 is based received the highest possible rating of "Good" in the frontal-offset, side-impact and roof strength tests.

The quick response of the 420-hp twin-turbo V8 and the seven-speed automated manual transmission give the 2013 Audi S6 a refreshingly strong personality, and the all-wheel-drive system, upgraded brakes and usable air suspension let you put it to good use. As you can feel from the crisp messages from the high-performance tires, there's a far more serious car here than you expected.

At the same time, the 2013 Audi S6 is also unexpectedly refined. The use of air suspension takes away much of the road harshness that is the customary price you pay for low-profile tires, while the engine's cylinder-deactivation system works so silently and transparently that you're pleasantly surprised when you discover the good news about the fuel economy.

In keeping with Audi tradition, the 2013 Audi S6 has one of the nicest cabins in its class, with a handsome dash layout, excellent materials quality and solid fit and finish. The MMI (Multi Media Interface) controls entertainment, communication and navigation functions via the dash-mounted pop-up screen and a knob and buttons on the center console. The system combines logical menus, crisp graphics and a touchpad to increase functionality. MMI is fairly intuitive, although we still prefer the Mercedes COMAND interface for overall usefulness.

The S6 also features in-car Wi-Fi, which uses a 3G connection and adds Google Earth data to the navigation system while also providing simplified Google search for POIs. It sounds a bit over the top, but proves handy if you need to get some unexpected work done on the road and there's no Starbucks in sight. The Google Earth feature is an example of form over function, as the map can be more difficult to comprehend at a glance.

Whether you stay with the standard sport seats or opt for the comfort seats, we're fairly confident you'll find them supportive during spirited back roads driving and comfortable on long trips. Those in back don't get short shrift either, as the rear quarters provide more real-world legroom than most rivals.

The S6's 14.1-cubic-foot trunk is on the small side, though the split rear seat folds down and features a pass-through when more space is needed.

The 2013 Audi A6 requires a lighter touch around town than a BMW 5 Series sedan. At the same time, it feels more athletic than the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. But more than a meet-in-the-middle compromise, the Audi A6 satisfies on both the comfort and performance fronts. The available supercharged 3.0-liter engine is delightfully responsive throughout its rev range. The 8-speed automatic transmission is smooth and flexible. The rear-biased quattro AWD system effortlessly puts power to pavement. No matter the situation, driving the A6 is an exercise in ease. Wheeling into a tight parking space or charging a favorite onramp, this Audi never asks too much and always returns much more. If we could change one thing, we'd like better road feel and response from the fuel-saving but quirky electric power steering. Obviously, the sport-oriented S6 changes the equilibrium, with its lusty 420-horsepower turbo V8 and firmer suspension.

DEDICATED INTERNET ACCESSFor $ 25-$ 30 per month through T-Mobile, the 2013 Audi A6 gets its own connection to the Internet, providing access to Google maps and location data, traffic and weather information, and the ability to connect up to eight Wi-Fi devices, like computers, iPads and smartphones.STOP & GO CRUISE CONTROLUsing video cameras plus short- and long-distance radar sensors, the 2013 Audi A6 will gas and brake itself along in stop-and-go traffic. All you have to do is stay awake and steer.

The 2013 Audi A6 boasts not only our favorite interior in the segment, but one of the finest passenger cabins money can buy: an unmatched mix of contemporary design, high-quality materials and impeccable build quality. The A6 is also the choice in the segment for tech-lovers, offering dedicated Internet access that enables Google-powered maps and location information, and turns the car into a Wi-Fi hot spot for up to eight personal devices. The center console-mounted volume knob, placed conveniently adjacent to the main MMI (Multi Media Interface) control, remains a favorite small touch.

The sheetmetal of the Audi A6 sedan, completely redesigned last year, is clean and restrained, and very familiarly Audi. The profile of the car is remarkably similar to that of its predecessor and its A4 and A8 stablemates, but it still looks fresh, athletic and purposeful. Bright, crisp LED lighting options perfectly complement the modern aesthetic. Audi claims a remarkably low 0.26 drag coefficient for the A6, which helps the car slide through the air efficiently. Befitting its brawny, sporting role, the powerful S6 has identifying lower-body aero aids and a distinctive face.

Although the 2013 A6 2.0T Premium boasts one of the lowest starting prices in the category, there's not a single glaring omission from its standard-equipment set. It includes all the luxuries you'd expect in the segment – leather, sunroof, automatic headlights, seat memory, etc. – plus many of the newer niceties like keyless start (but not keyless entry), Bluetooth phone/audio connectivity and iPod/iPhone integration. Outstanding EPA fuel-economy ratings (25/33 mpg city/highway with front-drive) make the entry-priced A6 one of the best values going in the luxury class.

The 2013 Audi A6 offers an impressive array of comfort, convenience and safety technologies. In addition to all the benefits of dedicated Internet access, the A6 offers adaptive cruise control that can stop-and-go the sedan through a traffic jam. Audi Night Vision Assistant can detect nearby pedestrians on dark roads. A color head-up display projects speed and navigation information onto the windshield, close to your field of vision. Audi Pre Sense Plus monitors the road ahead and can warn of a potential collision. For this year, the parking assist system gets new top- and corner-view cameras.

Audi's supercharged 3.0 V6 is one of our favorite engines. With 310 horsepower and the 8-speed Tiptronic automatic in the A6, Audi says it runs 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds. The 2.0T standard engine delivers flexible thrust that will satisfy most drivers, though obviously, it's working harder in this car than it does in the smaller A4. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) attached to the 2.0 in FWD applications remains an acquired taste: functional and calibrated for good fuel efficiency but not the stuff of enthusiasts' dreams. The 8-speed Tiptronic automatic accompanies all quattro AWD applications, with both engines. Speaking of dreams, the 420-horspower 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 in the S6 launches the 4400-pound car to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds.2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4211 horsepower @ 6,500 rpm258 lb-ft of torque @ 3,250 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 25/33 mpg (CVT automatic, FWD), 20/30 mpg (8-speed automatic, AWD)3.0-liter supercharged V6310 horsepower @ 5,500-6,500 rpm325 lb-ft of torque @ 2,900-4,500 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 19/28 mpg4.0-liter turbocharged V8420 horsepower @ 5,500 rpm406 lb-ft of torque @ 1,400 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/27 mpg

The 2013 Audi A6 starts at a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 43,095 and tops out near $ 75,000 when fully loaded. The S6 sports sedan runs from about $ 73,000 to over $ 90,000. The Audi A6 has a starting price advantage compared to the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedans, but when comparably equipped they're all playing in the same ballpark. If you want more features for your money, check out Asian competitors like the Acura TL, Infiniti M and Hyundai Genesis sedans. Before going to a dealer, be sure to arm yourself with Kelley Blue Book's Fair Purchase Price, which reflects what others are paying. As for resale value, we expect the 2013 Audi A6 to perform on par with the category average.

Audi S6 Overview and History

The Audi S6 and its mechanical twin S7 were released as a 2013 models, a year after the C7 A6 was released.
Shower gels and generally beauty-product brands have a way of appealing to customers by thrusting desire through sensorial-related names and presentation of their offers. Olfactory sense-stroking balms and soothing cashmere-touch night cream-approaches are basically the most commonly used methods of conveying beauty and easy customer-access to deeply-rooted sensorial pampering, unless beauty is forged out of steel and thousands of accurately engineered parts.

Automobiles undoubtedly fall into the latter category, and what better way of striking at least one of the remaining three senses if not building an image of a mighty engine roar or purr of a loyal cylinder sextet cradled under the bonnet of an Audi car? Audi translates as 'listen' from latin and besides expressing an unanimously accepted passion of the motorist, that of listening to the engine as if it were a never before heard dissertation on mechanics blended with boisterous 'deux ex machina' comments and demonstrations, it also marks the birth of Audi following Horch's demise, the previous name of the company that can be traced back to 1899.

Its founder, August Horch was forced out of his own company in 1909 due to trademark infringements, 8 years after the first automobile had rolled out the gates of the plant in Zwickau, Germany. After having been dispensed of, Horch started his own company under the same name which led to a fair share of trouble that came to an end as soon as Horch called for a meeting at the apartment of Franz Fikentscher to discuss the matter and come up with a new name for the company. Franz's son who was studying latin at the time was the true deliverer of the name that would later became synonymous with luxury and quality. As 'Horch' means listen in Old German, the boy simply made a switched the name with its latin corespondent, 'audi', sparking enthusiasm into the 'audience' that quickly adopted the name.

Audi's start o the German market was high lighted by the appearance of 2.6 liter engine powered vehicles followed by a series of more powerful ones, such as 4.7 L and the gas-gulping 5.7 L. Having gotten to see his company grow wings, Horch left in in 1920, four years before Audi's first 6 cylinder model was built. In 19128, Audi was acquired By Jorgen Rasmussen, owner of rival company DKW.

A few years later, a merger between Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer occurred and thus, the Auto Union was formed in 1932. Those times called for a new badge and the four interlocked rings were born as a sign of unity and identity of the newly formed auto-conglomerate. Technological improvement became a top priority that first took shape during the Second World War when an armored car was produced for the German Army.

However, all the progress would soon be severely slowed down and even halted at times due to heavy bombings. Moreover, as as soon as the conflict had come to an end, Zwickau had been caught in the soviet occupation zone that would become The German Democratic Republic in 1949. Not only that the company's activity was in jeopardy but the Auto Union had also broken up and the Union had to be restarted n new grounds, in Ingolstadt, Bavaria.

Though sluggish at first, the newly Ingolstadt based factory would attract many of the former workers and the construction of two-stroke engines would be resumed in a way similar to that of Zwickau. By 1958, Daimler-Benz had already acquired a whopping 87% of the Auto Union but its investment quickly became property of Volkswagen, the company having bought the factory and  and the brands in 1964.

Soon after the change of ownership, two-stroke engines would be eliminated in favor of the more popular and more customer appealing four-stroke ones. DKW, the leading brand of the Union at the time failed as a brand despite of the changes  it had made and Volkswagen decided to resurrect Audi. The former DKW built model was rebranded as an Audi one and was the springboard for the make of later models such as the 60, 75 and 80.

After a second merger with the Stuttgart based car-producer NSU by 1970, Audi established itself as a reliable growing brand that would later break the German boundaries and expand to new markets, including the North American one where it encountered difficulties following the release of a biased report that portrayed the car as suffering form 'unintended acceleration'. This was caused by the close placement of the brake and acceleration pedals, right next to each other. Shortly after the report was released , an abrupt decline in sales was registered that was countered only years later with the 1996 release of the A4 model.

Joining a row of successful car-producers, Audi has also garnered acclaim on the racing track with several World Record holdings, including one for Top Speed Endurance. Audi is currently enjoying a privileged position and large market share and is predicted to reach the production threshold of 1 million units by the end of this year.

2013 Audi S6 Consumer Reviews

Prestige quattro 4dr Sedan AWD (4.0L 8cyl Turbo 7AM)
Great car, horrendous repairs and maintenance
I purchased this car with approximately 40,000 miles on it and by 60,000 it needed over $ 4,000 dollars in repairs. At 50,000 miles the "check coolant" message appeared every day until a visit to the dealer revealed that a new water pump was needed at around $ 2,000 with labor. Not 5,000 miles later the engine developed a high pitch squeal at idle. The remedy for that was a costly repair to the high pressure oil system. Throughout the ownership of the car a clunking noise could be heard from the passenger footwell over every bump. This was never actually solved but was believed to be the front drive shaft and was replaced. Granted the dealership sympathized with me over the problems I was having and had Audi cover the cost. The adaptive cruise control went out of calibration several times and disabled the cruise until a $ 400 calibration was completed. Besides from the mechanical issues several interior rattles showed up in quick succession. Maintenance costs were as expected for oil changes but in order to perform the 75,000 mile service the entire front end would have had to be disassembled adding up to a $ 2,000 plus charge. All that aside the car itself was fantastic. The engine sounded rich and the acceleration was insane. The interior looked premium and the quilted seats were gorgeous. The exterior of the car had just the right blend of sport and luxury. All in all the dealer was exceptional and I would recommend the car if you don't mind the high maintenance and repair costs.

2013 Audi S6 is a bargain
I traded my 2011 Audi S4 Prestige with drive Select on a 2013 S6 with the invovation package. Although the S6 was 30% more expensive than the S4, I consider it a bargain. It rides better, handles better, is faster, and is techincally much more advanced than the S4. It also gets just as good gas mileage. I have been driving Audi Quattros since 1987 and This is my eleventh one, so I do have considerable experience with the brand and know what I am saying when I say the 2013 Audi S6 is one awesome car.

"Freakishly quick. The v8 is truly remarkable."
I love the subtlety of the car: no flashy and pretty lights inside and out. No bling! But what truly won me over was interior design and exhaust note. The v8 is just intoxicating and the interior is ultra modern. The only downside to this vehicle is that it's not meant to be driven in the inner city; this car is built to devour highways. And it does so easily. I traded in my Acura TL (which was underwhelming with respect to power) for the S6. The s6 is worth every penny. The car is roomy and offers a quiet ride. The quilted red diamond stitched seats are nice. They give the car a race-car look without compromising it's sleeper status. Overall, it's a great engineering work. Many have complained about weight, but the power generated by this car makes that a non issue. Anyone on the fence about this car, I say go for it.

"Best car I have ever owned"
The S6 is very fast, comfortable and the quality of the car is excellent. I have owned front wheel drive cars and rear wheel drive cars. This S6 is my first all wheel drive car. I will never own another front or rear wheel drive car again.

2017 Audi S6
"It's worth every dollar! Best v.8 ever!"
Before purchasing this car just over a week ago, I did extensive research--car and driver, YouTube videos, and googled countless blogs--to find out what car enthusiasts were saying. But not until I sat in this car and floor the accelerator and then my face lit up with joy and (somewhat fear of being ticketed every city block). What I truly like about this car, besides the growl from the twin turbo v.8, is it's sheer simplicity; it doesn't scream AMG.. or BMW M5, 6, 7, or 8. No bells or whistles. It simply flies under the radar--No attention needed here. It makes the perfect sleeper car. The Quattro system and the position of the engine makes it feel weighty, BUT, this car moves as easy as you and I breathe. From a standstill, this car takes your breath away. Again, it's not that the car doesn't have it's flaws, such as the weight or it's somewhat dated exterior design. But with all it's flaws, they pale in comparison to what this car can and does deliver--freakishly quick, stealthy, luxurious, and a wonderful daily driver. Audi seems to have the cockpit design down to perfection. Maybe the MB and the new M series come close. If you are on the fence, i say get off and buy. I traded in my 2012 Acura.Read less
