Now on life support in its final year, the 2009 Saab 9-7X manages a few final breaths as a reasonably capable GM-based luxury SUV, but there are plenty of other choices that come out miles ahead in terms of bang for the buck.

Enthusiasts with a penchant for Swedish-flavored transportation -- and, perhaps with a Saab passenger car already parked outside -- may think they've found the utility vehicle of their dreams when they lay eyes on the 2009 Saab 9-7X. Front fascias can be deceiving, however. Behind that distinctively Swedish face, the 9-7X is basically a gussied-up Chevrolet TrailBlazer, a back-of-the-pack midsize SUV that received its last redesign seven years ago.

Like its corporate cousins, the 2009 Saab 9-7X continues to ride on a truck-based body-on-frame chassis. However, it's differentiated through recalibrated suspension tuning and some unique exterior and interior design elements -- the signature three-port grille and cleanly styled headlamps give the 9-7X a simple yet sophisticated look up front. From most other angles, though, the 9-7X looks uncomfortably like its GM relatives. More family resemblance becomes evident when you turn the key and large-displacement, American-style power rumbles to life. There are three flavors to choose from: a base 4.2-liter inline-6, a 5.3-liter V8 or a fire-breathing 390-horsepower 6.0-liter V8.

The 9-7X is generally competent, but it doesn't possess enough unique Saab DNA to compensate for its obvious GM underpinnings and lofty price tag. Competing models like the Acura MDX and Lexus RX 350 offer higher levels of safety, luxury and refinement. Even if you consider yourself a Saabophile, you should think twice before adding this SUV to your stable.

The 2009 Saab 9-7X is a premium midsize sport-utility vehicle that seats five and is offered in three states of tune: base 4.2i, midlevel 5.3i and high-flying Aero. Standard equipment on the 4.2i includes 18-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, faux wood trim, eight-way power-adjustable heated front seats with driver memory, a sunroof, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, OnStar, satellite radio and an MP3-compatible Bose audio system with an in-dash six-CD changer.

The 5.3i model ups the ante with V8 power, xenon headlights with washers, specific aluminum wheels and power-adjustable pedals. The range-topping Aero is further differentiated by a bigger V8, a sport-tuned suspension with larger stabilizer bars, heavy-duty brakes, 20-inch wheels with performance tires, exclusive charcoal metallic paint and "Aero"-embroidered seats and floor mats. Optional 9-7X equipment includes a navigation system, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system and polished aluminum wheels. Chrome-trimmed side assist steps are also offered as a dealer-installed option.

All Saab 9-7Xs are powered by GM-built engines that transmit their power through four-speed automatic transmissions and a standard all-wheel-drive system. The 4.2i model features a 4.2-liter inline six-cylinder putting out 285 hp and 276 pound-feet of torque. The 5.3i is equipped with a 5.3-liter V8 that generates 300 horses and 321 lb-ft of torque and features GM's Active Fuel Management system, which deactivates four cylinders when not needed during cruising conditions.

The performance-oriented Aero is equipped with a 6.0-liter V8 cranking out 390 hp and 400 lb-ft of tire-twisting torque -- if you want to reach 60 mph in less than 6 seconds, this is the one for you. Properly equipped, the 9-7X can tow up to 6,600 pounds. EPA-estimated fuel economy is about what you'd expect from a 2.5-ton, large-displacement SUV: 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway and 16 mpg combined from both the 4.2-liter six-cylinder and the 5.3-liter V8. Those figures go down to a Hummer-like 12 mpg city/16 mpg highway and 13 mpg combined for the Aero's 6.0-liter V8.

The 2009 Saab 9-7X comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability control, front-seat side-impact airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and OnStar with crash notification. In the government's frontal crash test, though, the 9-7X received an unimpressive three stars out of five for driver protection and four stars for front-passenger protection. Saab's SUV did perform well in government side-impact testing, earning a perfect five stars out of five for both front and rear occupants. However, in Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing, the 9-7X received an "Acceptable" rating for frontal-offset collisions and only a "Marginal" ranking for side-impact crashes.

In order to achieve more responsive handling and coax a bit more Euro-style road feel from this truck-based chassis, Saab engineers stiffened the 9-7X's frame and recalibrated its antiquated A-arm front suspension and solid rear axle design. The result is a qualified success, as the 2009 Saab 9-7X offers a more compliant and better-controlled ride plus sharper handling than any of its GM relatives. But that's not saying a whole lot, as less costly traditional SUVs like the Ford Explorer and Toyota 4Runner still top the 9-7X in driving dynamics. Brake feel is also a weak point, as the pedal lacks the progressive and confident modulation associated with a premium vehicle. And while we have no problem at all with the abundant power of the three available engines, they lack overall refinement when compared with the power delivery found in some of the 9-7X's premium rivals from overseas.

Drivers who are familiar with other Saabs but don't look too closely should feel right at home behind the wheel of the 2009 9-7X. The console-mounted ignition and the cockpit-inspired design are instantly recognizable Saab brand cues, and the faux wood dash accents and contrasting upholstery trim impart an inviting Scandinavian design feel. However, sharp-eyed enthusiasts will quickly uncover the vehicle's more pedestrian GM foundation. When compared with more sophisticated but similarly priced Japanese and European rivals, the 9-7X's interior design and materials quality simply don't measure up. The 9-7X is roomy, though, with cargo capacity measuring nearly 40 cubic feet behind the rear seats and just over 80 cubic feet total with the seats down -- slightly above average for this segment.

Unlike the scores of increasingly popular car-based SUVs, truck-based SUVs like the Saab 9-7X still struggle to combine a smooth ride with confident handling. So, although stiffening the suspension imparts the 9-7X with increased straight-line and cornering stability, it also results in a rougher ride, especially for those in the rear seat. In addition, while the in-line six-cylinder and V8 engines offer plenty of power, neither conveys a sense of effortlessness under heavy acceleration and both would benefit greatly from a more sophisticated transmission than the four-speed automatic. Steering and brakes are both responsive, and a tight turning radius helps make the 9-7X surprisingly easy to maneuver in parking lots.

Leather SeatsBig, supportive, comfortable leather seats provide a creamy center for the 9-7X.Sound SystemAn impressive in-dash six-disc sound system is both loud and clear.

Saab purists, rejoice. Unlike the short-lived 9-2X (a thinly disguised Subaru Impreza WRX wearing the Saab nametag), the 9-7X has its ignition cylinder right where Saabs have always had them: Between the front seats. That, in addition to the sport-styled seats and chrome-ringed gauges, helps reinforce the European performance mindset while contrast stitching, wood-like trim and familiar air vents help further differentiate the 9-7X as a premium European-like vehicle. Interior space is as generous as you'd expect from a mid-size SUV, and the big leather seats are comfortable.

Given that most of its exterior panels are borrowed from its domestic-branded cousins, Saab's designers did an excellent job of giving the 9-7X its own identity. Key differentiators include a familiar three-port grille, wraparound-look rear glass and sporty 18-inch aluminum wheels. Combined with sleek bumper treatments, an inch-lower ride height and tastefully flared wheel arches, the 9-7X comes across as far sportier and more sophisticated than any of the vehicles with which it shares so much. The 9-7X Aero features a more aggressive look, with a tighter suspension and big 20-inch alloy wheels. The view from behind includes silver, clear-lens taillights that evoke Chevy's smaller and less-exclusive SUV, the Equinox. And, a trailer hitch beneath a Saab logo may seem odd.

A base Saab 9-7X 4.2i is complete with a full stock of standard equipment that includes a 4.2-liter six-cylinder engine, four-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive, leather seats, wood-like trim, moonroof, Bose audio with in-dash six-disc changer, XM Satellite Radio, OnStar, dual-zone automatic climate control, power windows, locks and mirrors, heated power front seats, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, load-leveling rear air suspension and 18-inch alloy wheels. Standard safety equipment includes StabiliTrak electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes (ABS) and front and side-curtain airbags.

Stepping up to the Saab 9-7X 5.3i delivers not only the 5.3-liter V8, but also xenon headlamps and power-adjustable pedals. Optional on both trim levels are a navigation system and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system. The 9-7X Aero is powered by a 390-horsepower, 6.0-liter V8 and wears 20-inch wheels, unique exterior colors and custom interior adornments.

Although the two big V8s makes the 9-7X a more capable hauler (maximum towing capacity is 6,500 pounds), the in-line six will prove plenty powerful for most drivers. If you're leaning toward the 5.3-liter V8, it's nice to know that the mileage penalty isn't that steep, thanks in part to active fuel management technology which allows the engine to operate on just four cylinders when the power of all eight is not needed. The Aero, on the other hand, has plenty of power to play, but you will pay a price at the pump. Unlike other European SUVs, the 9-7X doesn't offer manual tap-up/tap-down shift capability. 4.2-liter in-line 6285 horsepower @ 6000 rpm276 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4600 rpm EPA estimated city/highway fuel economy: 14/20 5.3-liter V8300 horsepower @ 5300 rpm321 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4000 rpmEPA estimated city/highway fuel economy: 14/206.0-liter V8390 horsepower @ 6000 rpm400 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4000 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 12/16

The 2009 Saab 9-7X 4.2i's Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starts around $ 41,500, while the V8-powered 5.3i model starts around $ 44,000 and will increase to about $ 48,000 with the DVD navigation and rear-seat entertainment systems. The 9-7X Aero starts just over the $ 48,000 mark. A look at the Fair Purchase Price shows the typical transaction price being paid for the 9-7X in your area, so be sure to check it out before negotiating a final amount. The 9-7X runs in the company of such vehicles as the Volkswagen Touareg and Volvo XC90, and holds its value better than the GM vehicles with which it shares its platform.

Saab 9-7X Overview and History

A new generation of Saab 9-7X made its debut in 2008, featuring a sporty exterior and a well-equipped, cockpit-inspired interior.
The Swedes at Saab were building planes long before they were building cars so you know their standards ran pretty because in the aeronautical industry there's no room for mistake if you want to get back safely on the ground.

In 1937 the Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget or the Swedish Aeorplane Company starting its business but by the end of WWII the good people down there had trouble placing their products on the market. A new market was needed, but for a new market you need a new product. And since the need to get people fast and safe from one place to another was on the rise, what better market than that of automobiles. So, in 1944, Project 92, or the manufacture of the first Saab car began.

The Saab 92 had a very interesting feature but it was an understandable occurence when you consider the man who drew up the car used to design planes: it had a very low drag coefficient of 0.31, one which many modern cars still struggle to attain.

After the Saab 92 came the Saab  in 1955 with an improved engine, upgraded to 3 cylinders and with the trapezoid grille that would become a trademark for the brand in later years. A wagon version of the car, the 95 came in 1959.

In the 60s, the general direction for Saab was bigger, as the 99 model proved. It also brought in more power, as the 99 was turbocharged, a feature common on later cars as well, a tradition for the Swedish automaker from then on. At the end of the decade, Saab reached the 1 million cars mark.

A new platform was needed by the end of the 70s for the aging Saabs, so the company signed a deal with Fiat which later spawned the Alfa Romeo 164, Fiat Croma, Lancia Therma and the Saab 9000. All these cars rode on the Type Four chassis, the result of the joint venture.

Ten years later, in 1987, Saab found itself in financial difficulties and was forced to shut down the plant at Arlov in order to cut costs. The fact that GM bought 50% of the stocks in 1990 helped alleviate the problems a little, but the company was still losing money and so the factory at Malmo in order to further reduce costs.

Recovery was going to come in the shape of the Saab 900, developed with the help of GM in 1993, a car which would give the company its first profitable year since the 80s. GM later acquired the rest of Saab's shares as was the initial agreement and from then on Saab became subsidiary to the American giant.

Current models, the 9-3 and the 9-5, are based on Opel chassis and are manufactured in Sweden and Germany. The SUV model 9-7x is being built in america, in the state of Ohio. Now, the company has announced that it would be releasing a new crossover SUV, the 9-4X, after the demise of the 9-2X, basically a rebadged Subaru Impreza.

2009 Saab 9-7X Consumer Reviews

Great Luxury SUV
This SUV is fun to drive, and handles superbly in the snow. The price for a used one is incredibly low. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone that wants luxury, and all the equipment. Everyone compliments the exterior design and appearance. And those who ride in it want to know where to buy one.

Can't beat the value!
I just recently purchased a new 9-7x. I have to say that I would not have looked at this vehicle if I had to pay the sticker price of $ 43,000, but with $ 17,000 in rebates and other incentives this vehicle is a great value. I already have a Trailblazer so I am familiar with the platform. As you might expect the Saab is much nicer on the inside and has much better handling. The only knock is the fuel economy but I knew this from the Trailblazer. If you can get the rebates and incentives and you're in the SUV market, I think this SUV is worth a look.

Good SUV value
Due to the incentives and rebates I was able to purchase a 9-7X brand new for 25,000. For the price this is an outstanding value for this vehicle considering it comes with a 50,000 mile warranty. Comfortable, fun to drive and the interior is better than the other SUV's I tested costing much more. The six cylinder has ample power and it handles the road better than the 4-Runner I owned. I know people like to point out that this is not a "true" SAAB. However, this is not a a typical GM offering either. For the price I did not find a better mid-sized SUV.

9 7x - 5.3
Great SUV. Performance and handling are like no other SUV I have driven. We test drove both the 6 and 8 cylinder, and opted for the 8. Fuel economy was not much different between 6 or 8 so we went for the power. Wise choice. The V-8 power together with all wheel drive is fantastic.

"Second worst vehicle I’ve owned"
Fun to drive but even in 2018 GM has failed to solve the AFM destroying the engine for a few more mpg. Catastrophic failure of engine three times. Decided to have a remanufactured engine installed No more GM vehicles ever.

"I love this car"
I have owned this car about 3 months, bought with 86000 miles on it. Bought it to pull a 23 foot light camper. It does great. Mileage is acceptable with all it does and still looks nice when not towing. No complaints other than I really don't know why they are so undervalued, considering the car you get. Have had a lot of people question me about it, surprised to learn its a Saab and what it cost me.

"Comfortable Luxury SUV"
I bought this car nearly 2 years and 20k miles ago. Design: Front: Looks great. Back: Trailblazer... bla. Interior: Very nice design all around (except for that terrible flip-out cup holder). Comfort: The seats are absolutely fantastic (all 5). I love the adjustable pedals, power multi-directional seats, and heated seats. Dual climate zones with rear controls is great. Driving: Ride is great. It's not as soft as most SUVs, so it handles better. But is still floats over the bumps. Road noise is average. Handles well in the snow, though noticeably not as awesome as my old Grand Cherokee. Maintenance: This car is higher maintenance. Oil changes require larger amounts of oil which equals more money. The rear air suspension is heaven when it works... but it fails regularly. I gave up and switched it to standard coils. Thermostat went bad and needed replaced. Throttle body was dirty and needed to be cleaned. Right rear speaker has a short and crackles unless you hit the center console (which fixes it for a short period of time). DVD player in roof eats discs. Driver door sticks when opened. MPG is TERRIBLE! TEEEERRRRRIIIBLE! 14MPG City 19MPG HWY
